Washington Was Aware Syrian Extremists Had Chemical Weapons

The United States knew that Islamic extremists who are trying to overthrow the Syrian government possessed chemical weapons, Michael Maloof, a former Pentagon official, revealed today.

Maloof told the press that Al Qaeda and Al-Nusra - the armed branch of Al Qaeda in Syria - possess large amounts of sarin gas, a product that entered the country through Turkey and Iraq.

The former official quoted secret sources with direct access to a U.S. report that shows the clandestine supply of sarin gas having begun in those countries.

Now Al Qaeda produces much more sarin gas than when that information was revealed in August, after the publication of a document from The Nacional Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC), which is part of the intelligence community.

The former official also noted that the production of toxic substances to be used in Syria was financed by a Saudi citizen, but did not provide his name.

Maloof believes U.S. authorities are not publicizing the information so as not to affect their efforts to overthrow the Syrian government, regardless of the fact that they know that Al Qaeda, their nemesis, also uses those weapons.

Russian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Serguei Ryabkov told the ITAR-TASS news agency that Russian experts have begun analyzing information handed over by Syria that corroborates the responsibility of rebels in the March 19 events near Aleppo, denounced at the time by the Government.

Meanwhile, the Swedish head of inspectors of chemical weapons for Syria, Ake Sellstrom, was quoted today by the BBC as announcing that the group will soon return to continue working in that Arab nation.
