Dr. Siraj uddowllah

Thanks a lot for reading my email. If you read all those emails you will find these are only few of our friends. I understand their anger because of losing future are may be for sufferance cause of this situation or may be blind love for political believe. It's alright we need them to build our country but they should use their both eyes. I am in my life saw political leaders closely. And found them like hungry dog they will eat anything if nothing than poop is ok too. Now is time to get rid of those leaders from all parties. Now the time we should not look for a single person we must look for the whole country. Some of our job is to see muslims and hindus with his or her one eye. Pakistan and west Bengal they are busy with their own problems they have no time for Bangladesh at all. sei sob slogan Rush varoter dalarera hosiar sabdhan is gone. All we are so educated and talks like chagol. We must have love for our country and we do not divide country for any reason. Re: [chottala.com] What Jamaat leaders said in '71

Dear Mr. Sengupta,

With all due respects to you...this is the sort of thing that Jamaat craves for.

They want to be on the loop of news all the time thanks to our Media Mafia, and thanks also to our morally corrupt, fossilised and hypocritical intellectuals, today they appear (even as a mirage) to be on TOP OF THINGS.

They have come THIS FAR as they seek publicity, any publicity, even BAD PUBLICITY is as far as their mind set goes is 'good publicity'. We will continue to lose more than we have lost thus far if we once again get ensnared into their well laid trap.

It is time we made all political parties and their 'old mind set' unfashionable. That includes the vicious Jamaat as well.

Lets pray and hope for infusion of FRESH BLOOD with FRESH UNPOLLUTED MINDS into our politics, otherwise I foresee, gOD forbid yet another unimaginable bloodshed which none of us want.

Joy be yours, Peace, Love and Tranquility.

Yours,

/\jOI gURU/\

Dear aminmm,
You are right to say, if anybody don't respect to their present administrative govt. they don't like themselves also. I don't know why our nature is to criticise our country's representative to the outside world. Is it bringing any credit to us. Whatever might be it should be limited within ourselves only,  not to spread it to outside. We should remember a representative is not representing himself only, rather he is representing the whole nation. A C.N.C. of a country used to come to his position step by step in a legal way, not illegally by KARCHUPI as our corrupted political leaders.

With due respect to all the members I like to say we, (including me) are so mean that we tried to find whether Gen. Moin U Ahmed came USA without any invitation or not. If Gen. Moin wants Invitation he can get 1000 Invitation from USA. All those will be for the Army chief of a country. No matter it is a small country or big.You can read newspaper and see how they are closing all your leaders backdoors all over the country.

If I do not respect my Government I do not respect me.. Gen. Moin is our country representative and we should respectful to him as a Bangladeshi. If you feel you are American only that's another story. Sorry for hurting you.

A Bangladeshi.

[chottala.com] Voter I.D. Cards

Dear Mr. Abdur Rahim Azad,
I thank you for your nice explanation. Once I have read in the newspaper about Indian infiltrators especially from West Bengal side during our election time entering in Bangladesh to casts vote. As there were no voter I.D. cards at that time it was difficult to catch them.
Again I have read in another Bangladesh newspaper about two laks of Indians mostly our same Bengali speaking from West Bengal are doing job and earning money. Ours is a small and over populated poor country. Our boys are running and going outside to earn their livelihood. Many of them in jail in different foreign countries. Many are dying in the deserts, many in the Mediterranian sea and many in the streets of Malayasia. In this condition if anybody outsider coming illegally in our country to earn money it is a matter of great concern. Yes many Bangladeshi illegal immigrants in many rich countries like Middle East, USA, Japan and Mylayasia are working illegally but there are also strict rules followed in those countries. If they were caught either they are going to jail or they are deportd to their respective countries pennyless.
As I personally dislike communal feelings and I hate Jamat feelings since 1971 as I was 31 years at that time and  I was the real eye witness of their activities. I just wrote as I feel very much to intrduce our national I.D. cards like other civilized countries. Recently one unemplyed Bangladeshi died in Malayasia because of hunger, he is not a muslim but a citigen of Bangladesh, a real son of the soil.
I again thank you for your explaining everything nicely and giving some clear picure, many of which I did not know before.

Dr. Siraj uddowllah, Windsor, Canada.

Re: [chottala.com] Mr. Shamim your repeated Propaganda have Failed once again...

Shafiq Bhai, Jamir bhai,
You are right but on the other hand Few people are trying to down Gen. Moin for no reason. As a reader we can tell which way the wind is blowing. And please do not compare our military to Pak's. They are our proud ness and  of course they are doing good for the country. We can talk about the bad side of non democratic Gov. but also we need to see what they are doing all of our so called democratic Gov. failed. Actually there was no democracy in our history and we are probably going to have one for the first one soon. Sk.Mujib was only one all were his chakor he use to call any one tui. Only Syed Nazrul Islam was respectful to him. But Sk. Mujib had charismatic power to do that. Than Ziaur Rahman was not even cared for anyone He was like Hitler. But Ziaur Rahman never took a penny from country's fund, he was honest that way. General Ershad was a heman. He looted but he was the only one did little for development (roads,buildings,.....). He was a very soft guy for any woman so he was a killer and lover. Begum Zia was a good house wife and she good to make the party united. But she lost control on the chatukars and fall in love with body guard  and lost controls to her own son's. Her cabinet and family(her side, not late Zia's side) sold the country . Sk. Hasina was failed cause her Uncles sold her and than used her so much that she never had a chance to fix that. She is a very good woman but bad speaker.

Now we have a non speaker he doesn't talk but he loves to work. He knows what he is doing. Yeah I am talking about Dr. Fakhruddin. There was not any party disliked him. BNP,AL,JMT,JP............. all said he is a person without any bad record. Only bad side he is a world bank guy. But without world bank we can't survive. Now we must give Dr. Uddin to give us a country with less crime, less lootpat and more safety. Jamir bhai I remember you said you scared to travel Bangladesh with your Laptop(that time that was a 6/7k stuff). Now you go and see you will get most safety with your wife and kids. Anu vai we can't make Bangladesh like your New Zealand but we can have a place like Thailand where  country is going forward not backward.Jamir vai class e apni chatroder vul dhorar chaite tader valo dik gula nia utshaho den. Same jinish applies to our CTG. All Awami legars should say good about this CTG. BNP is dead anyway but they should say good because Tarek will no more their Superboss. Shamim you are a great personality but follow the right path. Gen. Moin is Bangladeshi but bola jai na hate bonduk thakle matha gorom thake. No more comment on our Army chief.

Regards to all the readers for your time. Banan vul er jonno khomaprarthi.

M Amin

[chottala.com] Giti Ara Chowdhury: the New Godfather? [A Shada Kalo Blog]

October 25, 2007

Giti Ara Chowdhury: the New Godfather?

Shada Kalo Blog

http://shadakalo.blogspot.com/

Dr. Mahbub Islam, a Ph.D. in Economics from Boston's Northeastern University and a tenured professor at St. Francis University in Pennsylvania moved back with his wife to Bangladesh a few years ago. He taught at a local university, and invested his hard-earned dollars into a realestate development company. He also built a building in Gulshan, and rented parts of it to Giti Ara Chowdhury and her husband. She is an adviser in the current CTG, and her husband was an MP in the BNP government. Mrs. Chowdhury has another identity: she is the sister-in-law of the chief adviser.

So we have the Army's chief of staff, Gen. Moeen, and the CA, Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed, exhorting NRBs to invest in Bangladesh, while we have Mrs. Chowdhury, an adviser in the government and her husband violently attacking this university professor and trying to usurp his property.

An email to Shadakalo reads:

Giti Ara Shafia Chowdhury is again in the news. This time it is not for steamrolling over poor jute mill worker but for beating, threatening to kill and illegally grabbing a six storied building in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Dr. Mahbubul Islam, who is a professor of St. Francis University of Pennsylvania, and his wife Farhana Islam, jointly held a press conference today October 25, 2007 in Dhaka Reporters Unit conference room.

Mr. and Mrs. Islam who owns a six storied building in Gulshan Dhaka alleged that their property at Gulsha-2 Road number 41 holding 7A which houses Giti Ara's ad firm Adcom and his husbands firm Sign Age and Megnavision is been forcefully grabbed by Caretaker Government Adviser Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury and his husband Nazim Kamran Chowdhury for some time. Islam couple brought their complained to RAB unit1 commander on December 6th of 2006 but no justice been received.

On Monday 22nd of October Nazim Kamran Chowdhury, husband of Adviser Giti Ara himself, Adviser Giti Ara's brother Abu Rushed Tarak, cousin Mokim Chowdhury and along with their gang attacked Mr. Mahbubul Alam and his wife with iron rods and sticks. Mr. Mahbub was hospitalized.

Adviser Giti Ara's husband did not stop there--he slapped Mrs. Farhana Islam when she was begging him for his husband's life. Nazim Kamran tore her Shari and used savage language and threatened to kill her and her husband, asking his gangs to drive a pickup truck over her husband Dr. Mahbubul Islam.

Both of them appeared in front of journalist and described the torture of powerful adviser Giti Ara Safia and her family. They asked for government to save them from this powerful land grabbers.

Can Dr. Fakhruddin do justice or he will take the side of his beloved Sister-in-Law is yet to be seen. We heard lot of advice from Dr. Fakhruddin that no one in the country is above the law. Nation wants to see if Adviser Giti Ara Safia is above the law or under the law.

It is very stupid thought & very nonsense idea that Voter Id with photo without  supporting proper birth certificates according to the proper birth registered record can protect of making false votes.
It can never be stopping of making false votes until & unless proper population record register containing correct date of birth & place of birth of the citizens are maintained properly by the proper Government Authority.
Can be it given any assurance that people who are living in Dhaka or Chittagong  are all citizen of Bangladesh??
Or
Have not come the people most of them in Dhaka & Chittagang from west Bengal to make their Photo Voter ID  cards??
Have any proper Idea or Documentary proof how can stop  false Voter Photo Id Card in  all cities of Bangladesh??

Good idea, but without strict and proper birth registration and a centralized

How about Moslem Rohingas refugees inside Bangladesh getting
ID cards?

Is there any documentation that "our Bengali speaking Dadababu
from west Bengal" entered to cast fake votes for their favourite
party well known to you in the past elections?

I have never heard, even from the communal and Islam-passand
parties, any such allegation of  "Dadababus from west Bengal"
casting votes en-block in Bangladeshi Elections in the past.

In any event, a recent estimate by the Election Commission
projected about 1 crore less voter than that was prepared during
Jote-Sarkar. Can you tell us who were these ghost voters?
I am sure, they were not the "Dadababus from west Bengal" !

For catching the "Dadababus who are doing job in our country
and taking our money to India for a long time who are doing
job in our country and taking our money to India for a long time",
it is equally important to impose hefty fines to the employers
who employ these "Dadababus".

However, an honest and efficient Policing is a prerequisite
for catching the violators.

Occationally we see in news papers about BJP and Shiv Sena
list Bangladeshi Muslims in the slums of Mumbai to perpetuate
Hindu communalism in the eve of election.  Example:
Do I smell  similar undertones in "Dadababu" politics ?
Is this BJP-ShivSena politics in Jamaati bottle?

In order to advance and progress as a Modern Nation we must
abhor all forms of communalism and use of religion in politics
(open and disguised).

Yes, "in all civilized countries now a days there is a system
of I.D. card with photo." But, has that prevented the illegal
alians from working and sending money back home?
There are over 7.5 million illegal alians working in USA.

Thanx to our CTG for their activities in voter lists preparation and also other formalities.. More necessity for our CTG to prepare voter I.D. cards with photo to stop the Indian infiltrators to enter in mass during our election time. If they really make identity cards for every citigen, then we hope our Bengali speaking Dadababu from west Bengal cannot enter to cast fake votes for their favourite party well known to all of us.
Morever it will stop all Dadababus who are doing job in our country and taking our money to India for a long time. It will be easy to catch them by searching I.D. Card from them in future.. In all civilized countries now a days there is a system of I.D. card with photo. Why not it should be in our country also.

[chottala.com] Raise your voice against domestic violence : Posted by Rezwan

Raise your voice against domestic violence

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month in USA, devoted to connecting battered women's advocates across the nation to work together to end violence against women and children.

The issue is not country specific. Domestic violence is a menace that is found all over the world. This is a disease prevailing in every social structure, whether its the educated or uneducated, rich or poor. Bangladeshi women experience some of the highest rates of domestic violence in the world.

In this report we will see how Bangladeshi bloggers have started making some waves in fighting domestic violence and bring justice for the victims proving the power of cyber activism once again.

Via Samiha Esha we take a look at the story of Nadine Murhsed, a lecturer of Brac University who was brutally assaulted by her husband Sajid Huq in New York, where he is a student at Columbia University.

Nadine on her wedding day Nadine brutally assaulted

Pictures tell a thousand words. but Nadine's note says more:
I am lucky to be alive, and there must be a reason why the month-long abuse I sustained did not culminate in my death. I had said my 'innah lillah..'s and was prepared to die, but that didn't happen. Instead, he raped me with my head draped with a scarf so that he wouldn't have to look at my disfigured face.
She was rescued by police and Sajid is now in the custody of NY Police. Dr. Kathryn ward at Nari Jibon's Bangladesh from our view has more updates:
Her abusive husband's elite family is threatening her family with false cases. More recently many prominent Bangladeshi women's organizations and leaders have protested the continued harassment of Nadine and her family and called for justice in Bangladesh and USA.

Some have organized on Facebook a group to provide Justice for Nadine! while others are speaking up and writing to challenge the victim-blaming anti-Nadine activities of the abuser's, family, and friends who have posted misinformation on these websites!
Adhunika Blog has some shocking statistics:
Studies show that up to 3 million women are physically abused annually by intimate partners in the United States. However, the numbers seem worse for the South Asian community in the U.S, where approximately 41% of women are physically and/or sexually abused in some way by their current male partners in their lifetime. Unfortunately, the real percentage may be higher as many South Asian women are less likely to categorize various interactions as domestic violence, or are afraid or prevented from reporting such incidents.
The Blog lists some helpful links to different domestic violence groups in USA that provide information about domestic violence and different services to victims.

Now lets go to Bangladesh to learn about more violence against women.

On October 22, 2007 Manobi posted about Rahela, a teenager working class girl who was gang raped lead by her former colleague, her throat was slit and body brutally mutilated by acid three years ago. Before her painful death she could name the devils who did this to her mother. A case is on trial in court and the first hearing will be on October 29, 2007. A leading human rights organization " Ain O Salish Kendra" is fighting for Rahela's justice and is leading the court battle. The accused are hiding from the law and may get acquited due to lack of sufficient evidence. Her husband has remarried after six months and is happy that she could save him and his family from becoming a suspect by naming the culprits. This negligence is another form of violence!

In her post [bn] Manobi urged the bloggers to amplify the news everywhere especially in local media so that Rahela can get justice. This post got enormous response generating 222 comments till-to-date. Jiner Badshah posted another appeal titled "justice must prevail " [bn] to the Bangladeshi blogger community to create petition , send out to all the local media and create awareness in social networking sites.

And it worked like wonder as articles started to appear in local media. This has prompted local journalists like Foisal Noi [bn] to go to Rahela's village and dig out more information on the case. A significant TV coverage of Rahela case on 29th October is planned by the local electronic media. Whether Rahela will get justice only time will tell. But Manobi's one post lead to so much commotion in the society - this is unprecedented.

Manobi says in an email:
Now it feels like, Rahela is not abandoned, she is not forgotten. This ovewhelming response once again proves Humanity is the religion what we all follow.
I urge all the cyber activists of the world to raise your voices against the domestic violences of your communities and create more awareness on this subject. It only takes a power of one to bring a change.

[chottala.com] The war heroes of liberation forces and sector commanders' comments

Blasting Jamaat for its anti-liberation role, they said this party is now denying established historical truth, and demanded banning it.

The renowned freedom fighters were talking to The Daily Star in reaction to Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed's claim that they did not work against the Liberation War and that there are no anti-liberation forces and war criminals in the country.

The war heroes include the deputy chief of liberation forces and sector commanders in the Liberation War.

Maj Gen (retd) AKM Shafiullah, who was commander of sector-11, said, "There is enough evidence to prove that they (Jamaat) were against the Liberation War."

Had they not been an anti-liberation force, so many people would not have to die in the war, said the former army chief. "This is time to make them face trial."

Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali, commander of sector-5, said, "Ali Ahsan Mojaheed is just trying to befool the people. Everybody in this country suffered in the hands of anti-liberation forces like Jamaat."

"If anti-liberation forces never existed (as Mojaheed claimed), then he should ask his conscience why 30 lakh people were martyred and three lakh mothers and sisters lost dignity during the war," he posed the question to the Jamaat leader.

Shawkat further asked, "Who were the 'AL-Badr' and 'Al-Shams' (involved in genocide) and who were their leaders?"

Retired Air Vice Marshal AK Khandakar, deputy chief of the liberation forces, said, "They (Jamaat leaders) cannot deny history by telling lies. The people have rejected their false claims."

Alleging that Jamaat is denying a "historical truth," he urged the government to ban the party.

Lt Col (retd) Kazi Nuruzzaman, commander of sector-7, said "To defeat these forces, all pro-liberation ones must unite to come to power in the next elections. We have to do this ourselves."

Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta, commander of sector-4, said those who worked against the liberation forces, including Jamaat, must face trial now.

Former army chief, Lt Gen (retd) Harun-ur-Rashid said, "Jamaat leaders' claims now have once again proved how important it is to make them face court."

Commander of sector-8 Lt Col (retd) Abu Osman Chowdhury condemned the Jamaat claim saying, "A thief never admits he is a thief. So, Jamaat leaders must be brought to justice."

"We tried former Jamaat chief Golam Azam at the people's court (gono adalot), we also formed national people's inquiry commission headed by poet Sufia Kamal that found a large of Jamaat leaders' involvement in anti-liberation activities."

Abu Osman said "Nizami ( Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami) was commander of Al-Badr and Mojaheed was its Dhaka unit chief."

"They (Jamaat leaders) dare to make false claims because of the silence of the nation's top political leaders, " he said. "Their claims only prove how big liars they are."

Top Liberation War heroes said yesterday a number of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders are proven collaborators in the genocide in 1971, and demanded they be brought to justice immediately.

[chottala.com] History speaks up

After 36 years of independence Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh now denies its anti-liberation role when history speaks volumes about how its leaders and workers collaborated with the occupying Pakistan forces in mass killings, rape, looting and numerous other atrocities.

The remarks that Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed made to the press after the electoral talks with the Election Commission Thursday has left people across the country stunned.

Former chief justice and chairman of the Law Commission Mostafa Kamal yesterday told The Daily Star, "Now it is being said that no war criminal exists in the country. Maybe after some time it would be said that the Liberation War never took place. All this will mean we will be deprived of the real history."

The war criminals have dared to make the audacious claim thanks to years of indifference to the demand for action against them, many observed.

Jamaat's active role against the independence has been documented in different publications including those by Jamaat itself during the war in 1971.

Thousands of people still bear the scars of war crimes by Jamaat-e-Islami and their student front Islami Chhatra Shangha (now known as Islami Chhatra Shibir), and some other groups such as Muslim League and Nizam-e Islami.

The incumbent Jamaat secretary general on Thursday told reporters, "In fact, anti-liberation forces never even existed."

At a rally in observance of 'Badr Day' on November 7, 1971, Mojaheed, who was president of East Pakistan Islami Chhatra Shangha, came up with a four-point programme that included 'wiping Hindustan off the face of the earth'.

He said, "Move forward with your head held high and with the Quran in heart to materialise the programme. If necessary we will march up to New Delhi and fly the flag of greater Pakistan."

Many research works, academic studies of history, accounts of both victims and collaborators, and publications including newspapers reveal that Mojaheed, who headed the Al Badr Bahini in Dhaka then, led the killings of the intellectuals only two days ahead of the victory of Liberation War.

He used to collect funds, organise armed trainings for Razakars, and persuade students and youths to join the paramilitary force designed to eliminate the freedom fighters.

Addressing a function of the Chhatra Shangha in Faridpur on September 15, 1971, he said, "Razakars and Al Badr forces and all other voluntary organisations have been working to protect the nation from the collaborators and spies of India. But unfortunately we observe that a section of political leaders like ZA Bhutto, Kawsar Niazi, Mufti Mahmud and Asghar Khan have lately been making objectionable remarks about the patriots."

'Razakar Bahini' was established under supervision of former Jamaat secretary general Moulana Abul Kalam Mohammad Yousuf while 'Badr Bahini' was comprised of the Islami Chhatra Shangha members.

Professor Dr Anisuzzaman, one of the nine-member committee formed by the government for making "Bangladesher Swadhinata Judhha Dalilpatra" (History of Bangladesh's War of Independence), told The Daily Star, "The documentary evidence that Jamaat had opposed the Liberation War is found in black and white in the then newspapers."

The committee assigned by the information ministry on behalf of the Bangladesh government has compiled and published documentary evidence of the Liberation War in 15 parts.

Anisuzzaman said, "Al Badr and Al Shams (both the organisations collaborated with the occupation force) were formed following the initiative of Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shangha. There is no room for doubt that they had killed many of our sons of soil including intellectuals."

Ironically, the 1971 publications of The Daily Sangram, a newspaper known as the mouthpiece of Jamaat-e-Islami, carry enough evidence to expose Jamaat's anti-liberation role.

Study of history reveals that 'Razakars' would organise drives against the freedom fighters, repress their families and carry out arsons while the 'Badr Bahini' would hunt down the people seeking freedom and kill them.

The 'Badr Bahini' also organised seminars and distributed pamphlets in futile attempts to make Bangalis "believe in ideals of Pakistan and Islami philosophy of life from cultural and political view point."

The September 8, 1971 issue of the Daily Sangram carried a news item headlined "Chhatra Shangha activists will protect each inch of Pakistan's land".

Matiur Rahman Nizami, the incumbent Aamir of Jamaat and the then president of Shangha, said that Islami Chhatra Shangha activists were pledged to protect every inch of Pakistan. They were even ready to attack the mainland Hindustan [India] to protect united Pakistan, the report read.

Another issue of the Sangram published on September 15 quoted Nizami, who was also the commander-in-chief of Al Badr then, as saying, "Every one of us should assume the role of a soldier of an Islami country. With assistance of the poor and the oppressed, we must kill those who are engaged in war against Pakistan and Islam."

The same newspaper on the third page of its September 16 issue ran another item headlined "No force on earth will be able to destroy Pakistan." In the news report Nizami called on the people to face conspiracy of the so-called Banga Daradi (Lover of Bengal).

Nizami's predecessor former Jamaat-e-Islami Aamir Golam Azam was the brains behind Jamaat's anti-liberation efforts.

Statements that Golam Azam had made in different publications show how instrumental he was in Jamaat's mission to thwart the independence movement and in helping the Pakistan army to commit massacres and other war crimes.

Golam Azam had held several meetings with the then Pakistani military ruler Yahia Khan, other policymakers including governors and politicians to streamline the campaign to resist the liberation forces.

A photograph of the meeting held to form 'Peace Committee', which helped the occupying forces in committing genocides, shows Golam Azam with Pakistani leaders and military personnel.

Immediately after independence he fled to Pakistan and returned after the brutal killings of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family in 1975.

In 1981, people threw shoes at him when he went to attend a namaz-e-janaza at Baitul Mukarram.

A total of three million people were killed and at least a quarter million women were violated during the nine months of war. Despite public demand for punishment to the war criminals and collaborators, successive governments did nothing to that end.

Only the government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took some initiatives to try the war criminals.

In January, 1972, Bangabandhu had formulated the Collaborators Act to try the collaborators and war criminals. The Act covers those individuals or organisations, who helped the Pakistani army in mass killings, conducted crimes against humanity, unleashed torture on men, women and children, destroyed property, or fought against the People's Republic of Bangladesh siding with the occupying forces. It also explained how 11 tribunals would be set up to punish them.

There is a view prevalent among a section of people that asking for trial of war criminals is irrelevant as the Awami League government had granted a general amnesty for all. This was said time and again that none pardoned Pakistani war criminals.

The Collaborators Act that was published in a gazette notification on November 30, 1973 however says none of the war criminals had been pardoned. The same was true for Golam Azam.

Section two of the Act said, "Those who were punished for or accused of rape, murder, attempt to murder or arson will not come under general amnesty under the section one."

Out of 37,000 sent to jail on charges of collaboration, some 26,000 were freed after announcement of the general amnesty.

Around 11,000 were still in the prison when the government of Justice Sayem and General Zia repealed the Collaboration Act on December 31, 1975. After the scrapping, those behind bars for war atrocities appealed and eventually got released.

In the early 90s, a mother of martyrs, Jahanara Imam, launched a movement for trial of war criminals. Though it won overwhelming public support none of the governments had bothered to take notice of it.

At that time, the People's Inquiry Commission was formed to investigate the activities of the war criminals and the collaborators.

Led by eminent poet Sufia Kamal, the commission comprised renowned academics, litterateurs and other professionals. On March 26, 1994, it unveiled accounts of the war crimes committed by 16 persons.

The war criminals are former acting aamir of Jamaat Abbas Ali Khan, Matiur Rahman Nizami, senior assistance secretary general of Jamaat Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, former BNP lawmaker Abdul Alim, Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, Maulana Abdul Mannan, Anwar Zahid, Abdul Kader Molla, ASM Solaiman, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, Maulana Abdus Sobhan, Maulana AKM Yousuf, Mohammad Ayen Ud Din, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, ABM Khaleq Majumder and Dr Sayed Sajjad Hossain.
