[chottala.com] BANGLADESH WITH OR WITHOUT THE MUJIBCOAT

          BANGLADESH WITH OR WITHOUT

                     THE MUJIBCOAT

Abid Bahar

Mujib was the leader of East Bengali people who inspired them to fight against Pakistani autocratic rule in East Bengal. In his pre liberation and post liberation period Mujib seems to occupy two different roles: One being a nationalist leader and a revolutionary and the other, like most African, Middle Eastern and South American autocrats after the liberation betraying with the people and imposing a dictatorial regime.

Mujib's pre liberation legacy

Mujib's impressive personality and his oratory power impressed East Bengalis later known as Bangladeshis. Beginning from 1968 he was wearing black coat which later on came to be known as the mujibcoat. During the independence movement the mujibcoat became popular among Mujib followers. To Mujib supporters mujibcoat symbolized even Mujib consciousness (Chetona). It was the hero-worshiping of Mujib.

Mujib in Post Liberation Legacy

In his post liberation role he founded a one party rule known as BKSAL and closed all the opposition newspapers; his favoritism to his party man and his misrule led to a man-made famine during 1974-75 which took half a million lives. Those who opposed him, his special unit called Rakkhi bahini headed by Indian commanders killed close to 35 thousand opposition lives. Mujib's misrule and the becoming of Bangladesh in his time as a failed state was termed by Henry Kissinger as the "bottomless basket case." When we read Amartya Sen, the Nobel Laureate in Economics and his analysis of the Bangladesh's 1974 famine, and read the local newspapers, and the sayings of politicians of the time, we find the famine was "man made."

At the time, Bhasani warned Mujib:

"…your party workers are illegally trying to own houses, cars, and trying to become the owners of banks. It is your responsibility to stop them. If you fail, your future is going to be miserable. …

Syed Abul Maksud records about the Mujib period:

"AL leaders were engaged in nepotism, hijacking, sometimes forcefully occupying properties of innocent people, …in large scale smuggling of goods from India…"

Mujib left behind a legacy of being a kind leader but only to his party man and to the others who witnessed or personally suffered as being the killer of democracy in Bangladesh. Many call his post liberation legacy in Bangladesh as a period of Fascism in Bangladesh. Mujib is also rated as among the top 10 dictators who were brutally murdered in a mutiny by his party man with help from majors in the BD army. His death was remembered by some as the death of a dictator.

Despite Mujib's failures, Mujib left a powerful political party of followers now led by his daughter who continue to cherish Mujib's commanding role in the making of a civil war in 1971 leading upto the independence movement. His daughter after being reelected as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh reinvented Mujib as a great leader and restored him as the father of the nation. However, those people who lived during his misrule remember him with awe and consider him as an "abusive leader." They outright reject him to be honored as the symbolic " father of the nation."

Mujib in all his life fought for democracy, but he was a power-hungry politician and became an autocrat. No doubt, Mujib's pre independence role was appreciated unanimously by Bangladeshis. But his post liberation controversial role symbolizes him and his coat similar to Mousilini' with his black shirt cadre's fascism. True, the following quotes by Mujib shows he was a very powerful South Asian fascist.

. - "Ei durbhikhey onek lok mara geche, ami ki korum?"( I agree, in this famine many people died, so what you want me to do?

(During Famine in 1974)

- "Amar kombol ta kothay?"( Where is my blanket?)

(Gazi Golam Mostafa, the relief minister, a relative of Mujib was renowned for corruption)

- "Amar daine chor, bame chor, samne chor, pichone chor, sobdikei chor" ( There are thiefs on my right, on my left, in front of me and behind me, thiefs are all around me)

(Bhasani said in reply, "Mujib, ainay takaiya jare dekhos, seo chor" ( Mujib the person you see in the mirror is also a thief)

- "Kothay aaj sei Siraj Sikder?" ( Where are you Seraj Sikder?)

(After Siraj Sikder was allegedly killed by Rakhi Bahini)

"Tomra upjatira borong Bangali hoyea jao"

(Tribals! You better become Bengalis") triggering unrest in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

"Jatir Pitha hoiche bolei noitho lalghora Dabai Ditham"
( That I am the father of the nation, I can't be rude, otherwise I would have destroyed my enemy)

Observing Mujib's life, several questions come to mind. When Mujib was not a democrat, also Mujib was not a statesman but Mujib was a powerful nationalist leader, in 2012, can Bangladesh as an emerging democratic nation seeking the symbol of a democratic leader. afford to be in the AL business of hero worshipping Mujib, the pre liberation hero, but a post liberation enemy of his own people. Can Bangladesh accept him as the father of the nation?

Again, Mujib's life shows he was a very powerful South Asian fascist. However, many of his followers remembering Mujib's pre liberation contributions are involved in hero-worshiping of him. They put on the mujibcoat as the great symbol of a leader who dreamed of a "golden Bengal" but in reality it bears the fascist symbol of Mujib's misrule. Chatro League, jubo League and the AL cadres, follow his style in Bangladesh politics, and many consider Hasina's politics of "Khun or goom" (death or disappearance) was derived from Mujib's exemplary extra judiciary killing of Seraj Sikder. In Italy, Spain, Germany and in Eastern Europe in order to move forward historians identified them as being anti democratic and rejected their fascist leaders as the symbol of progress. What about Bangladesh?

Finally, can Bangladesh in its post liberation period afford to move forward with the imposing shadow of Mujib behind Hasina, inspiring the Mujib followers to a memory of great disappointment in nation building? Can Bangladesh move forward without Mujib and the mujibcoat, mujibcoat bearing the symbol of fascism in Bangladesh?

[chottala.com] *Jealousy and its Cures*-10 Commandments

Learn English ...!
Jealousy is a Personal thing only. The word used in Arabic does not mean 'Jealousy'. It means 'Coveting'. Look up meaning of this word in Dictionary if you do not know. Orders against Coveting were 1st given by Allah to Hzt. Moosau and they are one of the 10 Basics of Islam (called 10 Commandments in English by Jews and Christians) that Allah had given to him.
Others Commandments are, not making false images of Him, not lying or cheating, not becoming false Witness, not stealing (robbing, earning through corruption, forging etc), respecting Parents, not committing Adultery, not Killing, not violating Sanctity of Sabbath (Saturday) and not calling His Name in Vain.
.
If you people want to become Real Moslims first abide by these character building Basics of Islam instead of keep thinking, Mollaa's Invention, '5 Pillars of Islam' would save you. 4 of these 5 Pillars are just Rituals, not Character Building Basics.

Jealousy and its Cures

"Beware of jealousy,
for verily it destroys good deeds
the way fire destroys wood."
Hasad (jealousy and envy) is among the most destructive emotions or feeling which a man may have towards his fellow human being. It causes him to wish evil for others and to be happy when misfortune befalls them. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) warned against envy by comparing it to fire that completely burns the wood. He (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: "Beware of jealousy, for verily it destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood." [Abu Dawood]

Hasad is a disease of the heart and it causes impurity to the heart, when Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) was asked who are the best of people? He (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) replied: "the one with a clean heart and truthful tongue." They asked: 'We understand a truthful tongue, but what does a clean heart mean?' he answered: 'It is the heart of one that is pious, pure, and is free of sin, transgressions, hatred and Hasad." [Ibn Majah]

Hasad is such a dangerous characteristic that Allah revealed verses of the Qur'aan to be recited as a protection from the jealous, "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn… from the evil of envious when he envies." [Soorah al-Falaq (113): 1]

At-Tirmidhee narrated from al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awam that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: "There has come to you the disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the 'shaver' (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair, but that it shaves (destroys) faith…" [(Hasan) Jamee at-Tirmidhee (2434)]

Hasad can cause the person to indulge in disbelief because it causes the individual to feel that Allah has not been fair with him; he forgets all the mercy and blessings which Allah has bestowed upon him. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"They are enemies for Allah's bounties." They asked: "Who are they?" He said: "Those who envy people for what Allah has given them of Bounty." [at-Tabaranee]

Allah through His Absolute Wisdom has given some people more wealth, intelligence, beauty, strength, children, etc. than others. The believing Muslim should be content with what Allah has destined for him. Allah says: [Soorah an-Nahl (16): 71] And:
"Allah favored some of you over others with wealth and properties… Do they deny the favors of Allah?""Do they envy men for what Allah has given them of His Bounty?" [Soorah an-Nisa (4): 54]

"It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in this world, and We raised some of them above others in ranks, so that some may employ others in their work. But the mercy of your Lord is better." [Soorah az-Zukhruf (43): 32] meaning mercy of Allah is better than the convenience of the world. The materials of this life do not make one superior to another in Allah's Judgment. True superiority lies in Taqwa (righteousness, fear of Allah). He said: "Surely, the most noble of you to Allah is the most God-fearing. " [Soorah al-Hujurat (49): 13] "And the Hereafter with Your Lord is (only) for those who have Taqwa." [Soorah az-Zukhruf (43): 35]

What belongs to the transient world is of no significance before Allah. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"If this world were worth a mosquito's wing before Allah, He would not give a disbeliever a drink of water." [At-Tirmidhee]

The favors of Allah in the world are a test; the more the favors, the more the tests. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: "Umar Ibn Khattab wrote this letter to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, 'Be content with your provision in this world, for the Most Merciful has honored some of His servants over others in terms of provision as a test of both. The one who has been given plenty is being tested to see if he will give thanks to Allah and fulfill the duties which are his by virtue of his wealth…" [Ibn Hatim]

Allah, the Exalted, has therefore forbidden us from desiring what others have,
"Do not wish for what we have favored some of you over others." [Soorah an-Nisa (4): 32]

In order to discourage envy, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"Do not look to those above you. Look to those below you, as it will more likely remind you of Allah's favors bestowed on you." [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim] On another occasion, he said: "If one of you looks at someone wealthier and better built than him, he should also look at someone of lower standard than himself." [Saheeh Muslim]

Islam permits Ghibtah

What Islam permits in contrast to Hasad (destructive jealousy) is Ghibtah (envy that is free from malice), which means neither loving the loss of the blessing nor hating for it to remain with the person, but desiring the same for oneself without the removal of the blessing from others.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"Envy is allowed in two cases, in case of a man whom Allah has given the Qur'aan and who recites it throughout night and day; and a man on whom Allah has bestowed wealth who gives it away throughout night and day." [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim] and he (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) also explained what may be said: "I wish I were given what he was given and did with it what he did."

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"The similitude of the people of this Ummah is like four individual. One whom Allah has given wealth and knowledge, so he handles his wealth with the knowledge. One whom Allah has given knowledge but not wealth and he says, 'Lord, should I have wealth like so-and-so I would have handled it like him.' So they both have the same reward. Such a person loves to have wealth like others so he can do good like others without wishing that the others lose their wealth. Another man, Allah has given him wealth but no knowledge and he spends his wealth in disobedience to Allah. And last, a man whom Allah has not given knowledge nor wealth but he says, 'Should I have wealth like so-and-so, I would spend it in the way he does.' So, both will have the same sin against them." [at-Tirmidhee and Ibn Majah]

Some Reasons that cause a person to have Jealousy

Anger and Malice:

When one is hurt by someone for any reason, he is angered, and his anger produces malice and urge for revenge in the heart. The slave begins to desire harm for the other person, he enjoys when he sees him in hardships and he may further think that Allah has done it to him as an evil reward!

And if the person is blessed with a gift, he grieves and this is Hasad, which does not harm the envied person but it hurts and destroys the Hasid (one who has Hasad) himself.

In order to close the door to this evil Islam advises the Muslims to be forgiving in nature and control one's anger. Allah says in the Qur'aan:
"Those who spend (in Allah's Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men. Verily, Allah loves the good doers." [Soorah al-Imran (3): 134]

Arrogance, Pride and Love for fame:

When a person achieves a high status and position in the society or gains wealth, he hates to see someone other than him compete or go ahead of him or be praised over him. So, he envies the former person.

An example of this can be taken of the Jews and their Hasad towards Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) for the Prophet-hood that Allah entrusted him with. Their envy made them reject the divine message given to him, because he was an Arab and not from the
Children of Israel. It was their Hasad which caused them to make statements as such, "It is these that Allah as favored among us?" [Soorah al-Anam (6): 53] "And they say: 'Why is not this Qur'aan sent down to some great man of the two towns?" [Soorah az-Zukhruf (43): 31] and in Soorah al-Muminoon (23): 34, "If you were to obey a human being life yourselves, then verily, you indeed would be losers."

This also shows one of the grave dangers of Hasad that Hasad hinders the person from following the truth and accepting advice from others just as the Hasad of the disbelievers prevented them from accepting Islam.

Evil Nature of the person:

Some people, even though they may not be harmed or threatened by other people's success, grieve when they hear about some good happening to others, and enjoy in their adversities. Neither do they seek progress for themselves nor do they wish others to progress!! Such kind of defect is difficult to cure for the reason behind their evil attitude is the evil nature of the person which does not allow him to accept other people's success.
Repentance and Getting Rid of Jealousy

Firstly, the believer should have sincerity in repenting from Hasad as Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: "Three things that every heart of a believer should not hate to have is sincerity in actions, rendering advise to leaders and holding to Jama'ah (community) of the Muslims, for their supplication surrounds everyone with them." [Ahmad and Ibn Majah]

Second
requirement to get rid of Hasad is to get rid of all those means which cause one to have Hasad like anger, hatred, love for the world and discontentment.

Discontentment comes from the slave's ignorance of his Lord. If he recognizes his Lord with the attributes of Perfection, All-Knowledgeable and All-Just to his slaves, he would not be discontent and as a result would not develop Hasad.

Imam Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullah) said: "It (contentment) opens the door of peace and security for the slave." It makes his heart pure from hatred, evil and malice. The more contented the person is, the purer his heart is. However, this does not mean that the slave should not make efforts to improve his situation. A slave should work to gain success and progress but he should not envy those whom Allah has granted more wealth or possession but he should be content with the decisions of Allah.

Thirdly, the slave should turn towards the Qur'aan which is a healing for the diseases of the heart. Allah says: "O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Rabb and a healing for that in your chests." [Soorah Yunus (10): 57]

Supplicate to Allah to purify your heart.
Allah said in the Qur'aan: "And those who came after them say: 'Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful." [Soorah al-Hashr (59): 10]

Give Sadaqah (charity)
for it purifies the heart and sanctifies the soul. It is for this reason Allah said to His Prophet: "Take Sadaqah from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it." [Soorah at-Tawbah (9): 103]

If thoughts of Hasad cross one's mind, he should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan and busy himself with something that will dispel these insinuating whispers and thoughts.

But if the Shaytan manages to instill Hasad in the hearts, then beware lest you say or do anything which will show Hasad. A person will not be brought to account for whatever crosses his mind, but he will be brought to account for what he says and does.

Shaikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: "Nobody is free from Hasad, but the noble person hides it whilst the base person shows it." [Amraad al-Quloob]

If you feel that you are jealous of a specific person, then buy him a gift, shake hands with him and give him salaams for Hasad is the result of hatred and the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"Shake hands, for this will dispel rancour, and exchange gifts and love one another, for this will dispel hatred." [Narrated by Maalik in al-Muwatta (1413)]

Abu Hurayrah (radhi allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
"By Allah, in Whose Hand is my soul, you will never enter
Paradise until you believe. And you will not believe unless you love one another. May I tell you something that if you do, you may love one another? Spread Salaam amongst yourselves." Ibn Abdul-Barr said: "This proves that Salaam can lift hatred and produce love." [Saheeh Muslim]

"A Man from the People of Paradise will enter now..."

Anas Ibn Malik (radhi allahu anhu) reported that he and other companions were sitting with the Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam), who said: "A man from the people of Paradise will enter now.." And a man from al-Ansar entered, with his beard dripping with water from Wudhu (ablution), and holding his sandals in his left hand.

The following day, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said the same thing and the same man entered.

On the third day, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) again repeated his statement and the same man entered with water dripping and holding his sandals.

When the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) left, Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn al-As (radhi allahu anhu) followed the man and said: 'I quarreled with my father and I swore I would not go to him for three days and night. Would you shelter me for these days?' the man replied: 'Yes.'

Anas said: 'Abdullah said that he stayed with this man for three nights and he did not see him praying at night, but every time he moved and changed position in bed he would remember Allah saying, 'Allahu Akbar' Until Salat-ul-Fajr. "

Abdullah said: 'I didn't hear anything from him but good. When the three nights had passed… I said: 'O slave of Allah! I really didn't abandon my father nor was I angry with him. But, I heard the Messenger of Allah speaking of you on three separate occasions, the Prophet had said that a man from the people of Paradise would enter, and you were the one to enter on all the three times. So, I wanted to stay with you to see what you do so that I could follow you. But I have not seen you doing much. So what is that you do for Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) to say what he had said?'

The man replied: 'It is nothing more than what you saw.' When it was time to leave, he called me back and said: 'Yes, it is nothing more than what you saw, except that I have no place in myself for ill-intentions or Hasad towards any Muslim and what Allah has given them.' Abdullah said: 'This is what has made you deserving of the praise and this is what we cannot do." [Musnad Ahmad]

Our Mollaa are such Kaafir Nmak Hraam that they hate and want the country destroyed that they live off in USA.

The French vote marks the first time that Muslims have determined the outcome of a presidential election in a major western European country; it is a preview of things to come.As the politically active Muslim population in France continues to swell, and as most Muslims vote for Socialist and leftwing parties, conservative parties will find it increasingly difficult to win future elections in France.According to a survey of 10,000 French voters conducted by the polling firm OpinionWay for the Paris-based newspaper Le Figaro, an extaordinary 93% of French Muslims voted for Hollande on May 6. By contrast, the poll shows that only 7% of French Muslims voted for the incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy. An estimated 2 million Muslims participated in the 2012 election, meaning that roughly 1.7 million Muslim votes went to Hollande rather than to Sarkozy. In the election as a whole, however, Hollande won over Sarkozy by only 1.1 million votes. This figure implies that Muslims cast the deciding votes that thrust Hollande into the Élysée Palace.France, home to between five and six million Muslims, already has the largest Muslim population in the European Union, and those numbers are expected to increase exponentially in coming years. According to conservative estimates, the Muslim population is projected to exceed 10% of the overall French population within the next decade-and-a-half.During the campaign, Hollande offered an amnesty to all of the estimated 400,000 illegal Muslim immigrants currently in France. He also pledged to change French electoral laws so that Muslim residents without French citizenship would be allowed to vote in municipal elections as of 2014. These measures, if implemented, would enable the Socialist Party tighten its grip on political power, both at the regional and national levels.Muslims in France — and across Europe as a whole — tend to support the Socialists for a variety of demographic, socio-economic and ideological reasons. Most Muslims in Europe live in lower-income households and experience higher levels of unemployment. As a result, Socialists and Muslims are locked into a politically advantageous power-dependence relationship, between the givers of social welfare benefits and the givers of votes. Not surprisingly, Socialists favor increased Muslim immigration, which in turn produces more voters for Socialist parties. In the ideological sphere, Socialists and Muslims generally share a mutual antipathy for traditional Judeo-Christian values. Although many Muslims oppose the secular agenda of the Socialists, most Muslims wholeheartedly support Socialist multicultural dogma, which they are leveraging to promote the Islamization of Europe. In foreign policymaking, Socialists and Muslims share a mutual disdain for the United States and Israel. Leftwing parties across Europe have turned anti-Zionism into a politically correct form of anti-Semitism. The increasingly hysterical anti-Israel rhetoric emanating from Socialist circles has contributed to a spike in anti-Semitic hate crimes across the continent; many of these crimes against Jews are being perpetrated by Muslims.Although Hollande has not articulated his views on Israel — he has said he wants to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories this summer — many observers fear that Hollande will surround himself with a coterie of leftwing advisors who will push him to distance France from the pro-Jewish, pro-Israel course established by Sarkozy.Hollande has also said he is opposed to Israeli or American military action against Iranian nuclear facilities and many analysts believe the new French government will seek to weaken international sanctions against Iran. The political changes in France have many Jews concerned about their future. On the day that French voters elected Hollande as their new president, more than 5,000 French Jews participated in an Aliyah (immigration of Jews to Israel) fair in Paris. The annual event, organized and run by the Jewish Agency, usually attracts about 2,000 visitors. To be sure, France is not the only country in which Muslims are changing the political dynamic. In Denmark, Socialist Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt won the parliamentary election in September 2011 by a margin of just 8,500 votes. According to an opinion survey, 89.1% of Muslims said they would vote for Socialist or leftwing parties. There are an estimated 200,000 Muslims in Denmark, 100,000 of whom are eligible to vote.In Britain, a new research report entitled, “Degrees of Separation: Ethnic minority voters and the Conservative Party,” shows that 47% of Muslims say they have affinity for the Labour Party, while on 5% say they identify with the Conservatives. During the 2010 elections, Muslim voters were the deciding factor in 82 constituencies. In the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Muslim voters elected the Bangladeshi-born Lutfur Rahman as their mayor. He is linked to the Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE), an Islamist group dedicated to changing the “very infrastructure of society, its institutions, its culture, its political order and its creed … from ignorance to Islam.” Since taking office, Rahman has stocked the public libraries in Tower Hamlets with books and DVDs containing the extremist sermons of banned Islamist preachers. Also in Britain, Labour Party MP Jim Fitzpatrick recently warned that his party has been infiltrated by radical Muslims who want to create an “Islamic social and political order” there. Muslims, he said, are “placing people within the political parties, recruiting members to those political parties, trying to get individuals selected and elected so they can exercise political influence and power, whether it’s at local government level or national level.” He added: “They are completely at odds with Labour’s program, with our support for secularism.”In Belgium, Muslims now make up one-quarter of the population of Brussels. In real terms, the number of Muslims in Brussels — where half of all Muslims in Belgium currently live — has reached 300,000, meaning that the self-styled “Capital of Europe” is now the most Islamic city in Europe. In practical terms, Islam mobilizes more people in Brussels than does the Roman Catholic Church, and demographers expect that Muslims will comprise the majority of the population of Brussels by 2030.In Belgium as a whole, new research from the Itinera Institute forecasts that by 2060, 60% of the Belgian population will be foreign born, which will have clear implications for Belgian politics. In Norway, new statistics show that immigrants will make up almost half of Oslo’s population by 2040. The study, the first ever projection of immigration trends to be published in Norway, shows that the largest cities will also see the biggest upsurge in immigrant numbers. In the country as a whole, the immigrant population is expected to jump from 12% to 24%, or from 600,000 people today to 1.5 million in 2040.In Spain, the Socialist Party recently attempted to pass a law in parliament that would have enabled more than 500,000 Moroccans residing in Spain to vote in Spanish municipal elections. If enacted, the measure would have ensured permanent Socialist control over all Spanish towns and cities with significant Muslim minorities. The measure was derailed in November 2011, when, in the general election, the Socialists were ousted from power.Originally published by Gatestone Institute http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org This email was sent to mohiuddin@, by United Muslims of America (UMA). [chottala.com] William Gomes: An Outspoken Voice for the Voiceless

William Gomes: An Outspoken Voice for the Voiceless

"I have seen journalism from a very different point of view for years." - William Nicholas Gomes

William-gomes-kz

(TEHRAN / SALEM) - William Gomes is a young, progressive journalist and human rights activist from Bangladesh. He has written widely about the human rights violations around the world and was recently declared as the Human Rights Ambassador for the U.S.-based news website Salem-News.

He has extensively written on such issues as civil and political rights, rule of law, democracy and human rights, adequate housing, business and human rights, climate change, development, good governance, human rights of persons with disabilities, freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, freedom of religion and belief, internal displacement, human rights dimension of poverty with different national authorities of countries and international organizations like United Nations. He has worked for prominent regional human rights watchdog, Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).

While working for the Asian Human rights commission, he worked on the issues of arbitrary arrest and detention, extrajudicial killings, torture, fabrication of charges, death in custody, sexual violence, right to fair trial etc.

William took part in an interview with me to discuss his first engagement with journalism, his viewpoints on the most challenging human rights questions, his selection as the Salem-News Human Rights Ambassador and his viewpoints on the anti-Iranian campaign of sanctions and war threats.

I think you're trying to look into journalism from a different and innovative perspective. Would you please tell us about your attitude toward journalism and the innovations you want to introduce?

I have seen journalism from a very different point of view for years. I have had chance to contribute in different mainstream media around the world and in the mean time I have tried to redefine journalism though blogging. I am the assistant

editor of Salem-News.com; I am the correspondent of Sri Lanka Guardian. I have worked for an Italian news agency and also Asia News which is an official press agency of the Roman Catholic Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). My reported news was translated into different languages including Italian and Chinese. The reports were quoted and re quoted by various media outlets.

I have missed one thing very much and that is democratic media. Corporate media talks about democracy while claiming that they promote democracy but the truth is painfully visible; that democracy is absent within their structure. I was looking to breach the gap between corporate and non-corporate media, trying to introduce an alternative to government and corporate media. I am working to introduce fully democratic media, which is democratic in nature. I have observed in the mainstream media culture, people gaining importance merely by being useful tools of the business and political powers. I am working to create media that promotes pro-people journalism, where journalists work for the public good and in a democratic process.

You have recently been selected as the Human Rights Ambassador by Salem-News website. Would you please speak about your selection and your feeling about this important event in your life?

As I mentioned before that I am working to create media that promotes pro-people journalism. I identify Salem-News.com as a pro-people and democratic medium which is unique, and the fact that the site has been online for so many years, means it has a significant ranking and it reaches not only a fair share of readers, but also many journalists worldwide; this is important. When realizing the potential we possessed together to effect change, Bonnie and Tim and their group nominated me as the "Human Rights Ambassador."

Basic policy principles

Since the formation of the office "Human Rights Ambassador" our goal is to seek to set a minimum standard of human dignity: that is, the dignity of every individual, regardless of the wider contexts like tribe, social class and state, of which every human being is part around the world. Human rights are therefore universal by definition and apply to everyone, everywhere at all times.

As a Human Rights Ambassador, these are the responsibilities which we have assumed:

Casework: Brining forward the cases of different human rights violations in light systematically and presenting it before the world and making it available in public domain. To integrate human rights into all areas of foreign and development cooperation policy, and across all issues in which human rights play a role in relations between different countries of the world.

Advocacy: with governments, parliaments, international organizations and the media. To conduct missions, to discuss human rights questions, explore the scope for dialogue and, occasionally, form part of the delegation of foreign and development ministers.

Capacity Building: working in partnership with like-minded organizations around the world in order to propagate human rights policy and acquire new ideas.

What are the plans and programs you would like to realize as a Human Rights Ambassador?

My office has a very specific plan to make the human rights office into its highest degree of success to make it more people-oriented, for which we are focusing on some thematic issues:

Pakistani activist Baba Jan was tortured for 12 days, until
William Gomes addressed his torture in a letter and article.
Govt. officials intervened, providing Baba Jan medical care
within 24-hours of the article being published.

a) Abolition of the death penalty: We firmly oppose the death penalty everywhere. For that we will pursues the abolition of the death penalty partly through our works and more importantly through close cooperation with our works and relations with different countries.

b) Protection from torture: Opposing torture and providing support to torture victims will always be priority areas of Salem-News human rights policy. As part of the campaign against inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, we will also bring forth research based educational works focusing on elimination of torture in different countries.

c) Human rights defenders: Human rights defenders were chosen as the central human rights issues. We will make a special effort to support human rights defenders and will push different governments for the adoption of different international declarations and domestic mechanisms that would specifically seek to protect them and their organizations.

d) Freedom of expression: Our human rights policy in this area will focus primarily on supporting peoples of different countries where freedom of expression is not respected.

e) Freedom of religion and belief: Our works will actively to promote and protect the freedom of religion and belief, and to provide support to any victims of violations in this area. We will seek to call the authorities of third countries to account for violations of this freedom within their territories: the countries concerned include Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Indonesia, China and countries in Central Asia.

f) Rights of minorities: Our policy focuses on bolstering the position of minorities throughout the world. We will call countries to account for their policies on minorities, bilaterally and in multilateral forums. Minorities often suffer discrimination in terms of civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights. Our efforts will be promoting the human rights of ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities and of indigenous peoples worldwide.

The protection of the rights of national minorities gradually emerged as a priority in international forums such as the UN, the Council of Europe and the OSCE. It is clear that minorities occupy a non-dominant position within society, that they are distinguished from the majority by linguistic, ethnic, religious or cultural characteristics, and that they are eager to preserve their identity. Minorities and indigenous peoples are often victims of discrimination, racism, and religious or other forms of intolerance. Where the rights of minorities are at stake, internal or even international crises may arise.

Non-discrimination: Our policy is geared towards protecting and strengthening the position of people in parts of the society where they might become victims of discrimination and intolerance. These groups include women, ethnic, national and religious minorities.

Economic, social and cultural rights: Economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights include the right to work, the right to choose work that is freely chosen or accepted, the right to education and the right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. Our human rights policy is based on the assumption that civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights are all equally important, and are interrelated and mutually reinforcing.

Development cooperation, at the heart of which is poverty reduction, is a major instrument for achieving ESC rights and goes beyond only achieving a certain level of socioeconomic development. Fair distribution of wealth, social justice, and non-discrimination are all equally important. It is essential for members of the public to have a say about development in their country.

Many activities financed under development cooperation policy help bolster the ESC rights of people throughout the world, especially in bilateral cooperation programs with partner countries. These include interventions relating to food, education, healthcare, housing, and so forth. The point is to ensure not only that people have access to provision, but also that they know what they are entitled to.

It is very clear, that the U.S. is already engaged in a war with Iran, and the open declaration of war is the only thing that is missing. Iran is a new Iraq for the U.S. administration. The U.S. administration is waiting to propagate and spread fabricated international terror on this historic nation.

So, what's your viewpoint regarding the repeated war threats of Israel and the U.S. against Iran and the economic sanctions which have been imposed upon the country?

The war threats and sanctions are part of a deadly political game which the U.S. and Israel seek to engage Iran in. Iran and the U.S. and their allies have their own role in this game. I have enough information that western intelligence officials are active in Iran. Any preemptive U.S. attack on Iran would be illegal and criminal. We should look carefully into the matter of cost and benefits of waging war on Iran; who, how and what will cost and who will benefit from the war.

I think the progressive forces within the U.S. military force should refuse illegal orders to attack Iran. I believe there are more courageous and honest people like former marine and weapons inspector in Iraq and Jeff Paterson who refused to fight in the 1991 war against Iraq. Salem-News.com's association with OCCUPY MARINES is very crucial. It is a simple fact that people in America are increasingly realizing that the only beneficiary of an attack on Iran, is Israel. I don't think people of the United States really want to pay the cost for that. I am in touch with many U.S. military officials who will resist the illegal and criminal initiative of the U.S. government to start a war on Iran. Anti-Iranian sanctions are anti-people sanctions. I also hope that at any cost people of Iran will make sure their stand is clear in respect of democracy and peace.

As you may know, Pastor Terry Jones burnt copies of the Holy Quran last month. He had initiated this devilish plan in 2010 and repeated it in the early 2012. What's your idea about him and his desecration of the holy book of Muslims?

I strongly oppose any kind of religious fundamentalism and believe that burning the holy Quran is condemnable. I publicly condemn the burning of Holy Quran and anyone who has done that should be brought before a court of justice. The act is bad enough, but the repercussions from these events are often both damaging, and lasting.

And finally, what is the peak which you would like to climb?

I have started something that I believe some other people will take up and the movement for peace will continue. When it becomes strong, we will be able to conquer human suffering and rebuild dignity and respect. I believe that is indeed the most elevated zenith we could set out to climb.
