Re: [chottala.com] Senior Executives-VVIP matter

I would have to say that so far, in my opinion, these comment by Dr.
Chowdhury & Mr. Moe Faroqi have probably been most valuable comments
made so far in this forum. Not only should we be employed at the
highest levels of government, but also people need to be in contact
with our local & national government reps here in the US and/or other
nations, and we should see how we can get more involved in the
political stage, why not run for a political office? It's only at
these levels where you can you make real change, have influence over
laws that affect everyone, create awareness, reduce hate crimes,
create a positive image, and do something that can help not only your
local residents, but also for Bangladesh, or at least increase the
attention to Bangladesh and be an advocate for it.

Attached is an interesting document that I came across, and talks
about how some groups & organizations got involved to create awareness
and actually made a positive difference, and are continuing to do so
today. Thanks.

Ahmed

Re: [chottala.com] Re: Great Memory

Attn : Mannan Sir

Dear Sir,

I am really pleased to read your below mail.Thank you very much to remember all these memories.otherwise, I started thinking that people of Ctg starting to forget those days.

I am the Grand Son of Haji Aminuddin (Founder of Grand Hotels in Ctg).My father's name is Mr.Nasimuddin. I think you also know him.

Haji Zahiruddin(Founder of Frescos,Statio rd.) was my maternal Grand Father(nana). He had five sons named Mushtaq(died july'07 in Ctg),Niaz (Died '06 in Karachi),Riaz,Eajaz & Imtiaz living in Karachi.Riaz Mama was working as manager with Habib Bank head office & now retired & doing his own business. All my five mamas are plasidians.Jasim Bhai (Purbokone),Qayyum Chowdhury(Rashi Bldg) were the class mate & very good friends of my Eajaz Uncle.

Irfan uncle's father Mr.Usman & My grand father Haji Aminuddin were the joint founder of Royal sweetmeat but later my Grand Pa(dada) transferred  his share to Mr.Usman.Irfan uncle was not our relative but more than relative. He passed away in 1996 after suffering lung cancer. But we have very good contacts with his family.

I have some photographs during that period which I will try to pass you.

Again thank you very much for bringing all these in memories.

May Allah bless you & may you live long.

Very truly yours

Sharfuddin

If I remember right the first Grand was where the Jalsha Cinema was. In
fifties this place was known as 'Chunargoodam.' Bipani Bitan came later.
Chicken and paratha was excellent there. Perhaps I am one of those few
survivors who can talk about that. If this Grand is the same Grand you are
talking about Mr. Sharfuddin, then you may pass some bits of information
and if possible couple of photographs to me. I will try to develop a
feature on it for one of my occassional features for Daily Star (Weekend
or Campus). How can one forget about 'Fresco' near Ujala Cineman at
Station Road! It survived till early seventies. The sons of the owner
Newaj and Riaj went ot school with me. So did Irfan of Royal Hotel in KC
Dey Roay and Anupam of Nobelty (West of Laldighi). Good memories never
fade.

Take care and have a nice day.

Prof. Abdul Mannan

Re: [chottala.com] Re: Great Memory

Will Costa Rica join Latin America's leftward tide?
Costa Ricans vote Sunday whether to approve a free-trade pact with the US.
By Sara Miller Llana – Staff writer and Blake Schmidt – contributor
from the October 5, 2007 edition

Reporter Blake Schmidt discusses Costa Rica's upcoming referendum on the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
Mexico City; and San José, Costa Rica - Sergio Salazar has spent three years touring seaside hamlets and mountain towns alike in a rickety yellow school bus, warning against trade liberalization at each stop.
No, he's not in Ecuador, or Venezuela, or any other Latin American country that has voted a leftist leader into power in recent years.
He's in Costa Rica, historically Central America's most stable, business-friendly democracy. And his rallying call is coming to a head this weekend as the nation votes in a referendum on the Central America Free Trade Act (DR-CAFTA) encompassing the US, Central America, and the Dominican Republic.
Costa Rica is the only nation in the region not to have ratified DR-CAFTA. Even in Nicaragua, whose president Daniel Ortega was once a virulent US foe, the pact has been ratified. And the outcome is far from certain: Opinion polls show a tight race, with the 'no' side now edging past the 'si' side.
Supporters, including Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, say that the agreement is essential for jobs and investment and that it will keep the technology sector booming. Opponents say the deal will flood the market with cheap imports, will be a boost to multinationals at the expense of small-business owners, and threaten national sovereignty. The debate has led to finger-pointing and has undertones of the "left" and "right" pendulum of Latin American politics. Will Costa Ricans endorse their historically close ties to the US, or will the country move toward the anti-US camp headed by Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez?
"I believe the opposition is against the agreement because [the pact] is with the US," says Luis Haug, manager of the polling firm CID-Gallup in Costa Rica. "It's more about ideology than free trade."
This weekend's referendum is, in many ways, a referendum on the presidential election last February, in which President Arias beat opponent Ottón Solis by just 2 percent.
Arias's slogan was "Costa Rica, Sí!," a reference to his support for the pact, which includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. Once again, he's asking Costa Ricans to vote "Sí" in favor of it.
"If we want to generate the 70,000 jobs we need every year for the next generation, we should vote 'Sí,' " Arias said recently, adding that if the trade pact is rejected, "Costa Rica will stop exporting goods and services and would instead export people."
Over the past two decades, Costa Rica's agricultural economy of coffee and bananas has diversified, and the country has become a technology hub, drawing such companies as Intel and Hewlett-Packard. Today computer microchips are Costa Rica's top export, according to the Foreign Trade Ministry. And last year, the country was able to attract $1.5 billion in foreign investment, up from $100 million two decades ago, according to the ministry.
Costa Rica's business sector is among the biggest advocates of a trade pact. CAFTA supporters say they fear that if the pact is turned down, investors will flee, and plans to negotiate similar agreements with the European Union and other strategic markets will be crippled.
"If this loses, it will be a regression of astronomical proportions," says Luis Lauredo, the former US ambassador to the Organization of American States.
But supporters face a tough opposition that spans university elites, unions, and dairy and rice farmers. More than 100,000 marched in the capital, San José, this past weekend, waving signs reading, "We won't sell our country." As part of the agreement, the US is demanding that Costa Rica open up state telecom and insurance monopolies.
"It will benefit the multinational companies, but not small businesses like mine," says Antonio Ramirez, who runs a travel agency. If Costa Rica's telecom industry is opened, he says, increased communications costs will eat into his company's modest profits.
"The 'no' [camp] is asking, 'Why do we need this if we have already done so well compared to the rest of Central America?" says the pollster, Mr. Haug.
But many supporters here say a window of opportunity is quickly closing.
Winning support for DR-CAFTA in the US House of Representatives in 2005 was a struggle. Now the antifree-trade sentiment in the Democratic-controlled Congress is stronger. "If this is rejected," says Mr. Lauredo, "there will be no new trade agreement on the horizon."

RE: [chottala.com] Senior Executives--VVIP matter

To: Bangladeshi Community in USA

Living in US, we all too much involved with Bangladeshi politics, rather than American politics. We can help Bangladesh, using our voice through Congress and Senate.
So I urge each and everyone please keep contact with your local congressmen and senators (Democratic or Republican or Independent) before 2008 election.
we can influence our representatives in Washington to help Bangladesh in term of foreign aids, tax free investment to Technology transfer, etc.

This is my opinion only, and hope all of you have far better than mine, please advice.

Respectfully,
Moe Faroqi

Subject: [chottala.com] Senior Executives--VVIP matter

We Bangladeshi-Americans are involved with so many organizations and societies but we never pushed one of the most important matters to the highest level of U.S. political circles and government. The matter is the appointment of American Bengali in the Senior Executive level in the U.S. government.
Reports by the Government Accountability Office show that "the numbers of women and minorities are low in the SES," Akaka said. Davis said the reports "documented a poorly diversified SES."
Of the 6,349 career SES members, the most recent GAO tally counted 325 African American men, 221 African American women, 164 Hispanic men and 65 Hispanic women.
That demographic profile of the SES, which was released in May, also showed there were 90 Asian/Pacific Islander men, 56 Asian/Pacific Islander women, 59 American Indian/Alaska native men and 27 American Indian/Alaska Native women.
The overwhelming majority of SES members were white -- 3,900 white men and 1,436 white women.
The GAO tally also included six as "unspecified."

Can we form a federation of all groups in the U.S. and speak in one voice in this and other most important matters? Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jamir Chowdhury, currently working for the Qatar University administration.
