Dear Badal I hope everything is proceeding fine towards Ripon's impending marriage and you are not too much busy about it. Your Bhabi and I will certainly miss the happy wedding. However, we very much hope we will be able to visit coming January and by the grace of Allah we will be able to see your first grandchild's face then. However we will put our presence through a humble "something" in the wedding. Seema will take care of it. I am waiting for some good news from you about the progress in publishing "Bangaleer Samorik Oitijyo." Meanwhile I am forwarding to you a message I received today about the publication of another book. May be you can do something similar for wider publicity of "Samorik Oitijyo." May be you have some plan better than this. Take care. The name-only newspapers received a huge chunk of public money allocated for publishing government advertisements and supplementary during the tenure of the last BNP-Jamaat alliance government.
Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad disclosed it in the parliament yesterday while replying to a query of a lawmaker.
The information minister placed a list before the House that showed that the BNP-led government spent over TK 104 crore during its five-year tenure over the purpose of advertisements in as many as 177 daily newspapers published from Dhaka.
Most of those newspapers exist only in names but devoured major portion of the allocation, thanks to the 'generosity' of the information ministry and its crooked officials.
These dishonest officials opened the floodgates of opportunity for name-only newspapers depriving mainstream national dailies.
There is also widespread allegation against the information ministry officials that they indulged in such malpractices under the table.
Apart from this, the then government also spent around TK. 5 crore to publish its advertisements and supplementary in 243 newspapers published from outside of Dhaka
Some weekly, fortnightly and monthly magazines both from Dhaka and different parts of the country also received quite a good segment of the allocation.
In replying to a lawmaker's query, Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad placed the list before the House showing categorically which newspaper got how much.
The information minister, however, claimed the advertisements were given to the newspapers as per the advertisement rules of 1987.
The list shows that daily Inquilab got the highest amount of allocated money of TK 7.87 crore, BNP's mouthpiece Dinkal TK.6.64 crore, mouthpiece of Jamaat-e-Islami Sangram TK 5.29 crore, Ittefaq TK 5.87 crore, Jugantar TK 4.21 crore, Manabjamin TK 4.67 crore, Prothom Alo TK 2.31 crore, Ajker Kagoj TK 2.36 crore, Sangbad TK 2.09 crore, Khabarpatra, owned by Hafiz Ibrahim, elder brother of controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun, TK 2.05 crore, and Bhorer Kagoj TK 2.16 crore.
Among the English dailies The News Today received the highest allocation of TK 2.34 crore, The Independent TK 2.28 crore, The Daily Star TK 1.58 crore, The New Age TK 1.10 crore, The Bangladesh Today TK 1.00 crore, The Financial Express TK 1.27 crore, and The New Nation TK 1.65 crore.
Among the name-only English dailies Good Morning got TK 60.47 lakh, Capital News TK 53.14 lakh, The Daily News Line TK 21.89 lakh, The Evening News Tk 7.70 lakh, The Capital Views TK 24.35 lakh and The Muslim Times TK 1.45 lakh.
Among the local newspapers Jessore-based Lok Samaj, owned by former minister Tariqul Islam, got the highest amount of money of TK 67.99 lakh, Chittagong-based Karnofuli, loyal to Jamaat-e-Islami, TK 55.17 lakh.
In replying to the lawmakers' queries, the information minister said the current government believes in free flow of information.
"All newspapers and satellite television channels are working independently," the information minister said adding, the government does not believe in butting into the affairs of the news media.

Controversial former ministers and lawmakers, dwindling organisational strength and alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami were responsible for BNP's rout in December 29 general election, observed the party's grassroots-level leaders yesterday.
Besides harming the organisation's image, many former ministers and lawmakers were behind the intra-party feuds that cost BNP dear in both parliamentary and upazila elections, they added.
The observations came at the third day's meetings between BNP central teams and upazila level leaders.
Presidents and general secretaries of upazilas in Patuakhali, Brahmanbaria, Moulvibazar, Narail and Pabna took part in the discussions at the party's headquarters in Naya Paltan.
Apart from airing their views on what led to the polls debacle, they briefed the central leaders about organisational state of their units.
A meeting source quoted Ashraf Ali, president of Mirzaganj upazila BNP in Patuakhali, as saying, "Teaming up with Jamaat was the main reason why we fared badly in the election. People did not take our ties to war criminals positively."
At the talks between the panel for Rajshahi division and Pabna district leaders, Mahbub Morshed Jyoti, president of Sathia BNP, said the party suffered the humiliating defeat because of Jamaat.
Some leaders of Patuakhali demanded that the high-command dissolve immediately the district committee led by former home minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury. They said they lost four seats due to failure of this committee.
"We got drubbing in the polls because of the bitter wrangle between Altaf Chowdhury and his general secretary," Kazi Mahbub, president of sadar upazila BNP, was quoted as saying by a participant.
Mahbub also asked the central body to form a new committee by ballot.
After the meetings, Kalapara BNP President ABM Mosharraf Hossain told The Daily Star that they have suggested that the high-command arrange for fresh committees to be set up through vote at all levels of the organisation.
Abdus Samad Montu, president of Pabna sadar upazila BNP, told this correspondent that weak organisational base was the key reason for dismal election performance. He said the leadership should also hear the ward- and union-level leaders for proper assessment of the grassroots conditions.
Bera upazila BNP General Secretary Raisuddin said former lawmaker Selim Reza Habib is to blame for the internal conflict in local BNP and the polls disaster. "The party should purge itself of all controversial leaders through councils," he told The Daily Star.
A leader from Moulvibazar district said activities of former finance minister Saifur Rahman and his son Naser Rahman brought on the election defeat. "Some close aides to Saifur including his son diminished the party's polls prospects by amassing wealth through abuse of power," he said requesting anonymity.
Asked about discussions with the central team, Advocate Abdur Rahman, president of Sarail upazila BNP [Brahmanbaria district], told The Daily Star, "We've asked the central leaders to reorganise the party so we can get over the internal problems soon."
Besides, he said, as the caretaker government did not play a neutral role, their party could not work freely in the lead-up to the election.
