[FutureOfBangladesh] Re: Re: [khabor.com] Ershad Behind Killing of General Zia - Retired Army offices opinioned [ATN Bangla News]

Dear Arif,

In my opinion, your this input is perhaps the best on this thread subject.

It is a very logical, rational, informative input based on confirmed, proven & authentic reference.

Jamat-RAZAKAR, NaPaki (their cocktail is BNP) bloggers can never produce such a logical, rational, informative input based on confirmed, proven & authentic reference.

They can only abuse, lie, twist and mix lies with some truth!

They are champion in TIN  NUMBAREE (actually numberless) activities

I have never seen any such good input from any Jamat-RAZAKAR, NaPaki (their cocktail is BNP) bloggers

Please accept our big hand for this marvellous posting

I hope truth will revail, today or tomorrow.

Devil can fool 'some' people for 'some' time, but not 'all' the people for 'all' the time.

Again, thanks to you for your nice input.

Dear Aslam vai & Sharif vai and other politically conscious & enthusiastic journalist, editors, columnist, political scientist, writers, readers,

Thanks for your remarks and observation.

Ms. Khaleda neither tried nor asked nor demanded - even did not show any interest to make the proper trial of her husband's vindictive killer and cruel killing!

Because,

  • Zia did not trust and liked Khaleda. Gen Zia wanted to divorce her after 1971, as she did not joint with him during liberation war, in spite of Zia's repeted call, instruction, message and order. She was staying with some NaPaki Army officer. (That is why there is no physical similarity between their two sons, Pino (Tarek) & Koko).

Reference:

Please read the item or episode 37 of the legendary & authentic book, "BANGABANDHU SHEIKH MUJIB KE GHIRE KICHU GHOTHONA & BANGLADESH" written by Dr. M A Wazed Mian, husband of Sheikh Hasina. Up to 2000 (I have this copy) four number of edition of this book has already published, which is very rare for any book on political matter.

Whole subject matters of that book was 1st published , continuously, in hundreds of episode, on alternate day, in the daily Ajker Kagoj during 1992, one of the best and well circulated news paper of that period and then that book was also published in 1993. On both the occasions, Khaleda Zia was ruling Prime Minister of Bangladesh. As content of that book was correct, so either as person Khaleda Zia or as an existing Prime Minister of Bangladesh and her Press office/wing (which is led by a full fledged Secretary) was not able to make any kind of official protest, deny or case about that fact.

Same episode was informed in the Bangladesh Parliament, by Major (Retd) Hafijuddin, now SONGSKAR BADEE, the then "independent MP" (1991-1996), formerly Jatio Party (Ershad) leader MP - Minister (up to 1991) and very recently Ex cabinet minister of Khaleda Zia cabinet (2001-2006). Ref: Proceedings of the Bangladesh Parliament

  • There was some immoral 'secret & hidden' understanding between Khaleda & Ho Mo Ershad (killer of her husband, Zia). After the assassination of Gen Zia, Ho Mo Ershad gave millions of taka to Khaleda and two millions taka property (one at Dhaka Cantonment & another at Banani), announcing (a complete lie) that Khaleda has no proerty at Dhaka. But in reality she had two land at least 10 Kathas each, one at Savar another at Uttarkhan. It was publicised that Zia had no money (CHERA GENZI, VANGA SUITCASE etc etc), but in reality - other than two land at Dhaka, as mentioned earlier, Zia kept taka 50,000 as "fixed deposit"' since 1970 (which was more or less equivalent to net salary of about 100 months of a NaPaki Army Major) in a bank

A group of lawyers (Ahmed Azam Khan & others) representing Khaleda submitted the 11-page statement to ACC Secretary Mukhlesur Rahman at the ACC office at on 6th August 2007.

According to the statements, Khaleda has a bank balance of about Tk 1.90 crore in eight accounts and 13 FDRs of about Tk 1.65 crore. The total amount she owns stands at Tk 3,54,58,084.

Khaleda's immovable property includes one house on 2.72 acres of land in the Dhak cantonment, another on about 1.5 bighas at Gulshan, about 10 kathas of land in Savar and 8 decimals of land in Uttarkhan, near Dhaka Airport

Ahmed Azam Khan told reporters that late president Ziaur Rahman had bought the lands in Savar and Uttarkhan in the early 1970s.

Khaleda's assets is only 3.5 crore – value of 4 lots & houses (Cantonment, Banani, Uttor Khan and Savar) are only about 12,507 BDT and Tk 50, 000 as FDR by Zia, published on many daily newspapers of  7.08.07

[chottala.com] Why blame rickshaws only?

Committed to PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO KNOW
Monday, September 29, 2008 11:59 AM GMT+06:00

Why blame rickshaws only?

Being a disabled person I am seriously inconvenienced by the ban on rickshaws on important roads. I am a mid-level employee so cannot afford CNGs , even if I can find one. Taxis and private cars are unthinkable. For this reason I am very pleased to see that your fearless newspaper has highlighted the acute problems caused by traffic jams on a daily basis. However, the police authorities are relentless in blaming rickshaws for the jams and even force me to walk (I use a crutch) in the heat and in the rain.

Over the last 2/3 weeks you are printing revealing pictures of gridlock on the road, when not one rickshaw can be seen. The actual cause is apparent to all (except perhaps, the authorities). There are too many private cars on Dhaka's roads that are too narrow to accommodate them all. Most of these cars are huge requiring lots of octane, cause pollution and park anywhere they like without any difficulty to obstruct traffic in all directions. Moreover, their incessant honking on hydraulic horns is turning most of Dhaka people deaf, as the police sergeant confessed in your paper recently.

In this connection, I have been following the writings of Sikander Ahmed and others who are giving many useful suggestions. He claims that if existing traffic laws are strictly followed and implemented, both motorized and non-motorized transports can ply on the roads with ease. Why isn't someone listening, instead of constantly putting the blame on those who cannot fight back.- usually the poor rickshawallas and those who use them.

[chottala.com] Ahmadinejad wants peace - Rabbi Weiss in New York

Neturei Karta: Ahmadinejad wants peace

Fringe ultra-Orthodox anti-Zionist group meets with Iranian president following his controversial UN speech. Delegation's Rabbi Weiss: 'We know he is not an enemy to the Jews, he has a Jewish community in his country that he honors, defends and supports'

Neta Sela

Published:  09.25.08, 13:08 / Israel News

After his virulently an anti-Zionist speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday drew reactions the world over, a group of Neturei Karta rabbis met in Manhattan on Wednesday with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Neturei Karta is a fringe ultra-Orthodox group formally created in 1935, that opposes Zionism and calls for the dismantling of the State of Israel on the grounds that they believe Jews are forbidden to have their own state until the coming of the Messiah

During the meeting members of the delegation presented the Iranian president with a $700 silver trophy as a sign of friendship.

Rabbi Yisroel David Weiss, who took part in the meeting, told Ynet the encounter was "very successful" and was conducted in a warm and friendly environment.

Not against Jews, against Zionists

Rabbi Weiss said the delegation thanked Ahmadinejad for his positive treatment of Iran's Jewish community.

"We know he is not an enemy to the Jews, he has a Jewish community in his country that he honors, defends and supports."

The rabbis added that Ahmadinejad "is not against the Jews, but against the Zionist regime."

The difference between Zionism and Judaism was discussed in the meeting as well.

Explaining the common thread between Neturei Karta and Ahmadinejad, Rabbi Weiss said, "The Iranian President understands the difference and understands that not everyone bears the Zionist outlook.

"Not everyone wants to see the destruction of Judaism and participate in the Zionist infidelity but rather solely to pray and hope for the end of the State of Israel," he said.

According to the rabbi, the Iranian president does not deny the Jewish Holocaust, but rather resists what he calls Zionist invasion and occupation of the land of Israel and the suffering caused to the Palestinians. "The Zionists use the Holocaust as an excuse for their crimes," said Weiss.

Close ties

According to him, there are also Jews who are loyal to the Torah and against Zionism for its denial of God.

"Ahmadinejad, like us, understands the difference between Judaism and Zionism," claimed Rabbi Weiss who emphasized that the Iranian president is not looking for ways to bomb Israel.

"It is the complete opposite; he wants peace and not to destroy the Jewish nation, that's what he explained to us. He is against the difficulties generated by the Zionist nation against the Palestinians," he said.

The Neturei Karta representative responded to President Shimon Peres' comments, "Throughout the generations, God told us that the Torah is our protection.

"Due to the Zionist leadership's denial of the Torah and diversion from its path, the warnings written in it are being ignored. This is likely to bring the Jewish nation to catastrophic outcomes as we see today and this is what we are fighting against," said Rabbi Weiss.

[chottala.com] Is Israel behind New Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) in Bangladesh?

US citizen helped it get 'int'l support'

Leaders of the banned Islamist outfit Harkatul Jihad Al Islami (HuJi) Bangladesh have floated Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) with permission from the government.

Mostly Soviet-Afghan War veterans, they claim they formed a 15-member convening committee in May as the caretaker administration gave them the go-ahead after a probe found nothing that could link them to any subversive campaign.

Kazi Azizul Huq, an adviser of the newborn organisation, told The Daily Star, "The intelligence agencies gathered that we have no relations to any terrorist networks.

"The government however set some conditions. Those include ones that say the party must run as per the country's constitution, and not resort to violence to implement Shariah law."

Last Friday, IDP held an Iftar party at the city's Diploma Engineers Institution. It was attended by party leaders and guests including Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, editor of weekly Blitz and a campaigner for Israel, Amar Desh Assistant Editor and Human Rights Forum General Secretary Sanjeeb Choudhury, PK Barua of Bouddha Kristi Prochar Sangha and Chitta Francis, a representative of Christian community.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed told The Daily Star that they allowed IDP to arrange the function as it was a religious one.

Replying to a query, he said they will definitely go for a closer examination before giving the organisation permission to arrange any political programme.

Sheikh Abdus Salam heads the convening committee. It was under his leadership that a group of Afghan War veterans launched HuJi at a press conference at the National Press Club on April 30, 1992.

Sources close to IDP said the outfit's ultimate objective is to establish Shariah law in the country.

Azizul Huq, on the other hand, said, "Our goal is to run the country as per the Charter of Medina that gives equal rights to all citizens irrespective of religion and ethnicity."

He said they want to introduce Shariah (the body of Islamic religious law) only for the Muslims. Other religious and ethnic minorities may follow the existing law of the land and norms of their communities.

"We don't want to impose anything on anyone. We'll put the Islamic laws into practice only if the people grant us an electoral mandate to amend the constitution," Azizul continued.

"Even those of Muslims who won't want to follow Shariah will have the freedom to follow the existing law."

He said the government had suggested they [IDP] take measures to convince the international community that their move to launch the outfit had no relations with extremism.

The suggestion came in view of the fact persons behind the new party had involvement with HuJi, an outfit that was banned by the government for terrorism in October 2005.

Azizul said Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury and Dr Richard L Benkin, an American citizen, helped in efforts to portray IDP in a positive light across the globe especially in the developed countries.

In an e-mail to this correspondent, Dr Benkin confirmed the statement. He said, "Mr. Huq is correct. Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury and I continuously try to bridge the gulf between religious communities throughout the world and always look for opportunities to promote a positive image of Bangladesh worldwide.

"Mr. Huq and I met for hours one day in Dhaka many months ago and recognised our common belief in God and faith. We also….. 'agreed to disagree' in the spirit of interfaith understanding and democracy.

"The newly formed Islamic Democratic Party opens the door for Muslims to separate themselves before the entire world from radicals and terrorists while at the same time affirming their strength in the Muslim [Islam] faith."

Shoaib, who was arrested at Zia International Airport in November, 2003 and charged with sedition in January, 2004, told The Daily Star, "The government gave permission to launch Islamic Democratic Party and host the Iftar party under the state of emergency. It's a green signal, and it allowed IDP to shed the names of HuJi and Islamic Gono Andolon."

He added, "Since IDP echoes the demand for establishing ties between Dhaka and Jerusalem, and upholds interfaith understanding, it is our responsibility to promote them at international level."

Earlier, speaking at Friday's programme, he said, "Islamic parties are stereotyped as anti-democracy. The emergence of IDP represents new trends in the country's politics as it believes in democracy while being an Islamic party.

"The name of IDP is connected to HuJi, an organisation that is widely criticised. Those who brand IDP as a terrorist organisation run on foreign funds."

He also said, "If Hizb-ut Tahrir, which is banned across the countries and had role in the Bali blasts, and anti-Liberation forces like Jamaat-e-Islami can operate openly, why can't IDP?"

Besides the one in Dhaka, IDP held Iftar parties in Chapainawabganj on September 6, Rajshahi on September 8, and Rangpur on September 15. Another one is scheduled to be held in Natore today.

Meanwhile, sources said IDP will form a full committee through a national convention before the ninth parliamentary election.

It also plans an alliance with other small parties--Islamic, non-Islamic and ethnic--and a token participation in the December 18 election, they added.

The party has already applied for registration with the Election Commission (EC).

Azizul Haque said, "We are preparing for registration on meeting the conditions specified in the application form. At the same time, we are working to have organisational structures for district and upazila levels."

The HuJi men who are now with IDP claim they had nothing to do with the blasts and some other acts of violence attributed to HuJi in general. Rather, it was a splinter group led by Mufti Hannan and Abdur Rouf that was responsible for the attacks.

They said they expelled Hannan from the organisation in 1998. After some time, they formed a political party named Islamic Gono Andolon against the backdrop of HuJi being listed as a terrorist organisation internationally.

During the BNP-led four-party alliance rule, Gono Andolon ran its organisational activities in secret as it tried not to be associated with the militant campaign that was being carried out by Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh at that time.

Gono Andolon was renamed Sacheton Islami Janata on August 19, 2006 following an understanding with the then government that allowed the organisation to work out in the open.

They have been trying to get permission since the caretaker administration took over in January last year, and obtained it six to seven months back, an IDP source said.

A former HuJi cadre said beginning in late eighties and working throughout the nineties, HuJi built up a network across madrasas. It organised arms training for students in hilly forest areas.

On different occasions, he continued, it sent trained youths to Afghanistan to participate in the war there. HuJi operatives were dispatched to Myanmar as well to fight for Rohingya militants against the Myanmarese army.

[chottala.com] Fwd: International Symposium for Sustainable Transport for Developing Countries and STP initiatives for Dhaka City

 To
Coordinator/Organiser
International Symposium for Sustainable Transport for Developing Countries
Co-organisers:
Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET)
Loughborough University, UK
Hiroshima University, Japan
British Council, Bangladesh
 Subject: International Symposium for Sustainable Transport for Developing Countries and STP initiatives for Dhaka City
 Dear Sir or Madam,
On behalf of Roads for People, a movement dedicated to the development of an eco-friendly and sustainable transport system in Dhaka City, I would like to draw your attention to some of the features of your recently concluded (28 - 29 August, 2008 in BUET) symposium.

First of all I would like to congratulate the organisers of the symposium for undertaking initiatives for sustainable transport development in developing countries. However, it is a matter of deep concern that in the name of sustainable transport development, the forum was mainly used to promote unsustainable, capital intensive, car-friendly and anti-fuel free transport policy directives, notably the Strategic Transport Plan (STP) for Dhaka City. The STP initiatives cannot be regarded as sustainable transport initiatives under any circumstances because the approach:
 · Shows total disregard to the majority of trips, i.e. all short trips (76% of the total trips) and fuel free transport (48% of the trips);
 · Takes a stand against sustainable transport modes by banning fuel free transport and restricting intercity buses and railways, etc.;
 · Invests the maximum amount of resources (237% more) for the less  optimal transport solution;
 · Promotes car friendly and unsustainable policy directives like change of modal share in favour of cars, promotion of more car parking facilities, etc.;
 · Promotes auto-friendly, inefficient and environmentally disastrous projects like the Eastern Bypass, elevated expressways and other unnecessary road projects, defying the findings of the STP study itself;
 · Develops transport alternatives considering only the supply side of the problem under the assumption of unconstrained demand, which would likely promote unsustainable use of scarce resources;
 · Takes important transport policy decisions solely on the basis of arbitrary reasoning without any valid supporting scientific analysis;
 · Promotes long distance trips and encourages the need for more travel, which is likely to induce more congestion and pollution;
 · Provides a disproportionate amount of resources for car-friendly and capital intensive projects and allocates inadequate provisions and funding for sustainable transport systems such as walking, fuel-free vehicles (bicycles and rickshaws), low cost public transit and an integrated waterway system;
 · Promotes inequality and social injustice.
 A detailed review of the main features of the STP and ongoing unsustainable transport interventions is attached herewith, which you may find useful.

In this connection, it might be appropriate to learn lessons from the dismal failure of Dhaka Urban Transport Project (DUTP) (DUTP 2006, Bari and Efroymson 2006). The approach adopted in the DUTP was very much similar to that of the recommended solutions of STP. Key features of the project include: construction of a number of flyovers, banning of fuel-free transport from main roads, forcing the pedestrians to take elevated crossings, widening of roads at the expense of footpaths, etc. It may be mentioned here that the total travel time disbenefits of the project were at least twenty times more than the tiny savings of travel times. The moral from the dismal failure of DUTP is that in planning for a multimodal transport system, there is no scope to take decisions on the basis of prejudices while defying standard approaches of transport appraisal. Yet a similar unscientific approach is evident both in DUTP and in STP.

The main conclusion of the project is that there is no justification for wasting public money in the name of so-called development projects, such as DUTP, which cause colossal damage to the economy (well over Tk 7.78 billion per year), reduce mobility of people and goods, divide neighborhoods and sever service facilities, inflict environmental degradation, destroy the basic fabric of sustainable development, deny vulnerable sections of the society their fundamental rights to accessibility and income, promote social inequality, and exacerbate poverty and hunger. An independent assessor appointed by the World Bank (World Bank 2007) also came down heavily on the justification of the key initiative of the project which attempted to ban fuel-free transport in favour of a tiny minority of car owners, who represent less than 5% of the population.

The dual role currently being played by a section of academics related to some higher learning institutions in Bangladesh is a matter of serious concern. These academics seem to be directly involved in formulating unsustainable, capital-intensive and environmentally disastrous policy directives like the banning of fuel-free transport, promotion of more free car parking facilities, and construction of flyovers and elevated expressways. It is difficult to understand how it could be appropriate to, one the one hand, be key members of STP or DUTP, while at the same time being directly involved in lucrative consultancy services for these wasteful and capital-intensive infrastructure projects. Such consultants would seem to assign more time to promoting lucrative infrastructure projects rather than for research and academic activities. Such behaviour not only represents a serious conflict of interest but also acts as a hindrance for the congenial development of academic and research activities, particularly at the postgraduate level. I would like to draw the attention of such malpractices to the University Grant Commission and other relevant authorities and hope that concerned academics will keep them above criticism and uphold the dignity and sanctity of higher learning institutions of Bangladesh.

The use of a sustainable transport development forum to promote such unsustainable STP or DUTP policy directives represents both insult and injury to the genuine movement for sustainable transport development.
Those of us in that movement strongly deplore such practice and hope that organisers will in future be careful to avoid allowing their forum to promote such misguided transport initiatives.

We also hope that the sponsors of the symposium would constitute an enquiry committee comprising an international panel of experts on sustainable transport development to review the activities of the so-called sustainable transport development symposium and undertake requisite corrective measures to avoid such controversies in future and hence to uphold the dignity of the basic philosophy of sustainable transport development, that is, to promote low-cost, eco-friendly, space- and energy-efficient transport that recognizes the rights of the majority rather than prioritizing the elite.

Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Bari,
It is nice to hear from you. You have sent a long mail. I am sorry, now I am too busy
to respond to every details of your mail. I would like to just identify only few
misunderstandings mentioned in your mail.

1. The Symposium was on 'Sustainable Transport in Developing Countries'.
There were two papers on STP; but discussed generically on different issues on
sustainable transport. So, there is no need to think that it was arranged to promote
STP or the otherway. We, the academicians, are only the pursuer of truth.

2. You mentioned that the forum was mainly to promote unsustainble, capital
incentive .... which is totally wrong. I don not know from where you got such message.
Please be sure about the content before sending such a public mail.

Wishes
