[chottala.com] The hijacked victory of Bangladesh - Major Faruk Ahmed (Retd)

The hijacked victory of Bangladesh - Major Faruk Ahmed (Retd)

Major Faruk Ahmed (Retd)
Introduction

Bangladesh has achieved her Independence through a bloody War of
Liberation continued for 9 months from March to December of the year 1971. The victory was achieved by fighting against the West Pakistani occupation Forces sacrificing blood of 30 million martyrs. Bangladesh is indebted to India for the support that she provided during this war but the nation cannot accept that our hard-earned victory should be hijacked by India as an exchange of the given assistance.

Today, it is imperative for us to see - how our victory was hijacked by India on the very Victory Day in 1971. Such study will help in identifying difference between agendas of India and Bangladesh in 1971. In order to determine today's Bangladesh-India relations, we cannot overlook such a significant event of our history.

This paper will endeavour to briefly highlight followings :

a. How the concept of an Independent nation was conceived.
b. How were the people of the then East Pakistan forced to start armed resistance?
c. India's motive behind supporting Bangladesh's Independence.
d. How the Victory of Bangladesh was hijacked on the very Victory Day.

How the concept of an Independent nation was conceived

We need to recognize which historic event was the turning point for achieving our separate identity. Following event will make it clear why today Bangladesh, the then East Bengal of British-India is an Independent country and why West Bengal of India is not.

The historic Lahore Resolution.

The Lahore Resolution1, commonly known as the Pakistan Resolution was a formal political statement adopted by the All-India Muslim League on the occasion of its three-day general session on March 22-24, 1940. It called for the creation of 'independent states' for Muslims in British India. The constituent units of these states were to be autonomous and sovereign. This was later interpreted as a demand for a separate Muslim state, Pakistan. The resolution was presented by Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, the then Chief Minister of Bengal who is titled 'Sher-e-Bangla' meaning 'Tiger of Bengal'.

Muslim League working Committee at the Lahore session
(Sher-e-Bangla at the centre of front row)

The statement declared :

"No constitutional plan would be workable or acceptable to the Muslims unless geographical contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary. That the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in majority as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India should be grouped to constitute independent states in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign."

The Resolution rejected the concept of United India and recommended the creation of an independent Muslim state consisting of Punjab, N. W. F. P., Sindh and Baluchistan
in the northwest, and Bengal and Assam in the northeast.

On the basis of this Lahore resolution, on 14th August, 1947- the state of Pakistan emerged on the map of the world. Thus, the then East Bengal; later East Pakistan which is today's Bangladesh has achieved independence jointly with West Pakistan.

Later on, in 1971, through an armed struggle- we have partitioned from West Pakistan and the then East Pakistan emerged as a sole Independent country of today's Bangladesh.

Our nation will remain ever indebted to Sher-e–Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Hoq for his great contribution in laying the foundation stone of Independence through Lahore Resolution without which we could never get separated from India and would have remained as a mere province of India same as West Bengal. This is why the Lahore Resolution is the fundamental source of spirit and a prime enabling factor behind the achievement of Independent Bangladesh.

How were the people of the then East Pakistan forced to start armed resistance?

a.
Cultural and economic deprivation. The declaration of Urdu to be Pakistan's only state-language and economic deprivation caused grievances in the minds of East Pakistani people. Detail description of this is avoided here.

b.
Political deprivation. In the General Election of Pakistan held in December 1970, Awami League led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman won majority seats. But President

Yahiya was not handing over the power to Sheikh Mujib as the Prime Minister of Pakistan as West Pakistani leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto opposed to accepting Sheikh Mujib as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

In order to exert pressure on Pakistani Govt to expedite the handing over of power, Sheikh Mujib held meeting in Dhaka Race Course Ground on 7th March 1971 and placed 4 points demand in his speech2. The first demand was:Immediate handover of power to the elected representatives.  Of course, in the last sentence of his speech, he mentioned that this time our movement is for freedom and independence.

As a democratic leader of Pakistan, Sheikh Mujib's politics was based on united Pakistan. After the meeting of 7th March 1971, he sat for round table dialogue with President Yahiya Khan and West Pakistani leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto which continued till 23rd March 1971 at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel (now Ruposhi Bangle Hotel).

Though separation was not an agenda of democratic movement of East Pakistani people but it was imposed on the nation by brutal armed massacre conducted on 25th March 1971.

c.
Conduct of the massacre leading to armed resistance and separation. West Pakistani Army launched Operation Search Light on the night of 25th March 1971 and killed thousands in Dhaka and Chittagong. That very night, Sheikh Mujib surrendered from his Dhanmondi residence and later taken to West Pakistan.

The massacre by West Pakistani soldiers made the separation of East Pakistan from West Pakistan inevitable. Nation was at a loss because of the absence of
direction as all political leaders took shelter in India and Sheikh Mujib surrendered. At that juncture, Major Zia, Second–in-Command of the 8th Bengal Regiment stationed in Chittagong, revolted and claiming himself as the Provisional Head of State, he declared Independence4 through Chittagong Kalur Ghat Radio Station3. Later on, he amended the message and re-declared the Independence on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
This declaration was broadcast hourly and the impact of this broadcast, which were picked up by the civilians and isolated Bengali units fighting the West Pakistanis, was significant.

India's motive behind supporting Bangladesh's Independence

The 7 point Agreement that India compelled the exile Bangladeshi Govt led by our great leader Tajuddin Ahmed, to sign which planned to convert Bangladesh into a semi-state of India devoid of any sovereign right. Let us have a glance on that secret Agreement4: (Quote)

(1) A para-military armed force for Bangladesh will be raised under supervision of the Indian military experts; this force shall be stronger and more active than the regular armed forces of Bangladesh.

(2) Bangladesh shall procure all military equipment from India and under planned supervision of the Indian military experts.

(3) Bangladesh shall direct her foreign trade under supervision and control of the Indian government.

(4) Yearly and five-yearly development plans for Bangladesh shall conform to Indian development plans.

(5) Foreign policy of Bangladesh must be compatible with and conform to that of India.

(6) Bangladesh shall not unilaterally rescind any of the treaties without prior approval of the Indian government.

(7) In accordance with the treaties signed before December (1971) war of Pakistan and India, Indian force shall enter into Bangladesh at any time and shall crush any resistance that may erupt there. (Unquote)

Such motive of India encouraged her to hijack the victory of Bangladesh.

How the Victory of Bangladesh was hijacked on the very Victory Day

The armed resistance was joined by all units of the East Bengal Regiment (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th unit), EPR (East Pakistan Rifles), Police and youths from all over the country which continued for 9 months. The Freedom Fighters inflicted heavy casualties on West Pakistani Forces and shattered their morale to fight which compelled them to accept surrender.

Though Bangladesh has come into being through armed resistance at the cost of 3 million martyrs' blood and enormous sacrifices put by the whole nation but the victory of our Freedom Fighters was hijacked by Indian Forces during signing of the instrument of surrender in Dhaka on 16th
December 19715. The Pakistani Forces were compelled to surrender to Indian Eastern Command Commander General Amrit Sing Arora instead of the C-in-C of Bangladesh Freedom Fighters General Ataul gani Osmani. Even no Sector Commander of the Freedom Fighters was allowed to remain present in the surrender programme. India's investment in sheltering few million Bangladeshi refugees and providing material support to the Freedom Fighters might worth a million USD; but what India took from Bangladesh worths more than thousand trillion USD
Photo: Commander of Pakistan's Eastern Command- General AK Niazi forced to surrender to General Jagzit Singh Arora, Commander of Indian Eastern Command instead of Bangladesh Prime Minister in exile Tajuddin Ahmed or General AG Osmani, C-in-C of the Freedom Fighters

and that was the victory over Pakistan which was earned by Bangladeshi nation through 9 months long struggle sacrificing 30 million martyrs.

Conclusion

Around 94000 Pakistani soldiers were taken to India as prisoners. All arms and ammunition left by Pakistani Forces worth more than a billion dollar were also taken
away by India. Sector Commander Major MA Jalil (Sector-9) was arrested for resisting the looting of our assets by Indian Forces. (Image of Major MA Jalil)

Since 1972, every year India observes Victory Day in the Eastern Sector against Pakistan. After 1971, the then Prime Minister of India- Ms Indira Gandhi declared in the parliament saying 'Hazar Saal ka badla le lia' meaning India has taken revenge of thousand years (of Muslim rule in India).

The investment made by India during our Liberation War in 1971, has been taken return with million times profit.

India has successfully created Bangladesh as her economic colony as the market of Bangladesh is inundated by Indian goods.

Indian culture on Bangladesh is dominant with ruling regime's assistance.

Bangladesh is militarily dominated by India as the later is bleed by India's proxy war launched in CHTs. Bangladesh's border is fenced by birbed wire and Indian trigger happy BSF has created a killing zone at our border by killing and injuring Bangladeshi
citizens like Felani which depicts today's  Bangladesh-India relation. Our Govt is very submissive to India in protesting such killings, torture and rapes on our citizens.

India controls the lives and livelihood of Bangladeshi people by controlling 54 international river waters through constructing dams and barrages such as Farakka. Every year half of Bangladesh can be submerged by water released at a time from Farakka point causing prolonged flood.

India's political influence on Bangladesh's current regime is so obvious that some Indian writer wrote an article about the current Bangladeshi regime terming Awami League regime as 'Friendly Govt in an enemy nation'.

The corridor facilities given to India through 'Framework Agreement of Co-operation' signed by Hasina and Monmohon in September 2011 will facilitate India in implementing the '7 point Agreement' signed in 1971 as this corridor will seriously impact our economic interest including national security and sovereignty.

Now it is up to the Bangladeshi people to resist such selling out of national interests in order to safeguard our Independence and sovereignty.

India should no longer deceive the world claiming that in 1971- it was sole India's victory over Pakistan. The study of the then situation in Bangladesh indicates that India only committed her troops when the defeat of West Pakistani Forces was inevitable in the hands of few lac Freedom Fighters supported by 75 million population of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has every legitimate right to claim back the assets taken by India including the document of the 'Surrender of Instrument' signed by Pakistani Eastern Commander on 16th December 1971 as our victory should be only our's.

Re: [chottala.com] Resoponse

Padma Shetu

It is surprising as I get hint the Padma Shetu construction most probably was received by a US based Bangladesh origin Construction Company..with Close ties to Bangladesh Military.. Interestingly it hired in some capacity it could have been stipulated in the CONTRACT AWARDED that goes to..with another INDIAN Owned CONSTRUCTION FIRM out PENSYLVANIA..well that is how these things go...OBAMA man in World Bank is..KOREAN but OBAMA Collects money from both of these..I think Mr Gaffar insinuated is close to SAMAD AZAD Son wing of AWAMI LEAGUE..

Now their are things..in CONSTRUCTION BIDS if MILITARY involved..If BIDS for some reason goes beyond the BIDDED amount.. contractor has to justify COST OVER RUN..this is where what they call ESTIMATING part of any BID WORK...if ESTIMATOR does wrong estimate it may seem..Budget shortfall..at That ESTIMATORS credential is subject of scrutiny..Specially if these have Military Contracts..

Basically it comes down to as ESTIMATORS are to be supervised too..and end up with basically INEPT MANAGEMENT..the thing is MILITRAY FAT CATS are Hard Core BNP..even if this Award is..in Awami Adminitration it is basically same thing same people of previous administration..I was very surpsrised by Awami League selection of ASHRAF as General Secretary...

Rogue politics of Bangladesh ex Prime Minister

by Preeta Memon
Khaleda Zia, the widow of Bangladesh's former military ruler Ziaur Rahman though seen as the next Prime Minister of the country, with her party winning in the general election of 2014, Indian intelligence sources have identified a number of her recent efforts, which not only are extremely unfavourable to the national interest of Bangladesh, but in most cases, are even devastating for the nation. In past seven months, she travelled to Saudi Arabia twice under the disguise of performing Umrah pilgrimage at Mecca, had been particularly aimed at convincing Saudis in expelling approximately two million Bangladeshi workers from that country, with various allegations. Indian intelligence sources claim that the recent decision of the Saudi authorities in sending back half-million Bangladeshi workers is a partial respond to the plea of Khaleda Zia, who enjoys special affection in Saudi Royal family.
Khaleda-Tarique meeting:
During last month's Saudi tour, the former Prime Minister of Bangladeshi and leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) met her self-exiled eldest son Tarique Rahman in Jeddah, who travelled from London to meet the mother. During the meeting, Khaleda Zia signalled nominating Tarique in the next general election in one of the parliamentary constituencies in Bangladesh and assured him returning to the country, once Bangladesh Nationalist Party is able winning the election.
Tarique Rahman runs businesses in United Arab Emirates and London through third parties and has been living luxurious life in London with his wife and children. He holds secret bank account with Singapore based OCBC Bank as well as banks in United Arab Emirates and United Kingdom through some of his aides. Indian intelligence agencies indicate Tarique Rahman of having significant amount of money in all of the secret bank accounts.
Koko's fabulous wealth in Malaysia:
Youngest son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Arafat Rahman Koko, who also is on self-exile in Malaysia to avert legal consequences is running multiple business ventures in Kuala Lumpur and other cities in Malaysia and has been living luxurious life with his wife and children. Koko's name came as the top culprit behind several bribe scams, including WorldTel and Naiko, wherefrom he received huge sum of money as bribe in exchange of special favor from his mother's government. Arafat Rahman Koko became extremely infamous in Bangladesh similarly as his elder brother Tarique Rahman, who had been engaged in ruthless corruption and looting of public wealth during the 2001-2006 rule of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Saudi offer for Khaleda Zia:
During the recent past meeting of Bangladeshi former Prime Minister, the Saudi authorities reportedly suggested her to stay in Riyadh for couple of years for treatment of her knees, while the Saudis also told Khaleda Zia that her sons would also be allowed to stay in Saudi Arabia, if she would agree to go for a short pause in her political career. She also was told that the ruling party in Bangladesh were determined in convicting her along with her sons in a number of corruption charges, including the Zia Charitable Trust scam. Khaleda Zia refused the Saudi offer stating her party would be in power "soon", which would be "much before the scheduled election", and the ruling party "won't have sufficient time to push the trials towards conviction".
Rogue policy of Khaleda Zia:
According to Indian intelligence agencies, Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman played vital role behind the August 21 grenade attack at the rally of Bangladesh Awami League with the nefarious goal of assassinating Sheikh Hasina. The grenade attack conspiracy took place at the residence of a junior minister of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led government, which was attended by Tarique Rahman and some other top officials of the country. The junior minister was assigned main role in implementing the blue-print, as Tarique Rahman strongly believed assassinating Sheikh Hasina would create uninterrupted opportunity for Bangladesh Nationalist Party in continuing in office for indefinite period.
ULFA connection of Khaleda Zia:
Khaleda Zia's anti-Indian policy had prompted her in adopting policies in extending logistic and otherwise supports to various separatist groups from India, including United Liberation Front of Assom. ULFA leaders had been accorded safe shelter within Bangladeshi soil, while anti-Indian Islamic terrorist groups were also provided supports from the Khaleda Zia government.
During the rule of Ziaur Rahman, due to his anti-Indian stand, Indian high commissioner in Bangladesh, Muchkund Dubey was stopped and humiliated in a street in Dhaka by the intelligence agencies at the directives of Zia. In the public meetings, Ziaur Rahman had been spreading venom of hatred against India.
Next Mission of Khaleda Zia:
Following couple of visits to Saudi Arabia and subsequent partial success in convincing the Saudi authorities in expelling Bangladeshi workers, which would put tremendous pressure on the ruling Bangladesh Awami League – she now is preparing for Beijing and Washington tours with some agendas of using American and Chinese influences in putting extended pressure on the government in Dhaka. Her political aides have also sought help from Grameen Bank founder Dr. Yunus is setting few important meetings for Khaleda Zia with US politicians and policymakers. Similarly, pro-Chinese block within Bangladesh Nationalist Part are actively pursuing Chinese diplomatic contacts in Dhaka in finalizing meetings for Khaleda Zia with key-figures in Beijing. Indian intelligence agency sources feel that the Bangladesh ex Prime Minister may go for these trips during October-December 2012. Khaleda Zia's aides are also contacting mainstream media in United States with the hope of getting her substantial media coverage. Khaleda Zia is expected to be interviewed by a number of US newspapers and television channels during her forthcoming trip.

[chottala.com] Iran Bans Women From College Courses

Iran Bans Women From College Courses

Aug 21, 2012 6:38 AM EDT

Female students in Iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination, which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.

By Robert Tait

In a move that has prompted a demand for a U.N. investigation by Iran's most celebrated human rights campaigner, the Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, 36 universities have announced that 77 B.A. and B.Sc courses in the coming academic year will be "single gender" and effectively exclusive to men.

It follows years in which Iranian women students have outperformed men, a trend at odds with the traditional male-dominated outlook of the country's religious leaders. Women outnumbered men by three to two in passing this year's university entrance exam.

Senior clerics in Iran's theocratic regime have become concerned about the social side-effects of rising educational standards among women, including declining birth and marriage rates.

Under the new policy, women undergraduates will be excluded from a broad range of studies in some of the country's leading institutions, including English literature, English translation, hotel management, archaeology, nuclear physics, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and business management.

The Oil Industry University, which has several campuses across the country, says it will no longer accept female students at all, citing a lack of employer demand. Isfahan University provided a similar rationale for excluding women from its mining engineering degree, claiming 98% of female graduates ended up jobless.

Writing to Ban Ki Moon, the U.N. secretary general, and Navi Pillay, the high commissioner for human rights, Mrs. Ebadi, a human rights lawyer exiled in the U.K., said the real agenda was to reduce the proportion of female students to below 50%—from around 65% at present—thereby weakening the Iranian feminist movement in its campaign against discriminatory Islamic laws.

"[It] is part of the recent policy of the Islamic Republic, which tries to return women to the private domain inside the home as it cannot tolerate their passionate presence in the public arena," says the letter, which was also sent to Ahmad Shaheed, the U.N.'s special rapporteur for human rights in Iran. "The aim is that women will give up their opposition and demands for their own rights."

The new policy has also been criticised by Iranian parliamentarians, who summoned the deputy science and higher education minister to explain.

However, the science and higher education minister, Kamran Daneshjoo, dismissed the controversy, saying that 90% of degrees remain open to both sexes and that single-gender courses were needed to create "balance."
Iran has highest ratio of female to male undergraduates in the world, according to UNESCO. Female students have become prominent in traditionally male-dominated courses like applied physics and some engineering disciplines.

Sociologists have credited women's growing academic success to the increased willingness of religiously-conservative families to send their daughters to university after the 1979 Islamic revolution. The relative decline in the male student population has been attributed to the desire of young Iranian men to "get rich quick" without going to university.

[chottala.com] New Commission to Restrict NGOs

New Commission to Restrict NGOs

Body is Smokescreen for Government to Control Civil Society

The Bangladeshi government's recently announced commission to regulate
nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) adds burdensome procedures that
will hinder important watchdog functions. International donors should
press the Awami League government to ensure that the country's
thriving NGO sector can continue to work without unnecessary
government interference.

On August 25, 2012, the Bangladeshi government stated it was going to
launch a commission to look into the operations of NGOs, claiming that
many were involved in "terror-financing and other anti-state
activities." The government announced at the same time that it had
cancelled the registration of some 6,000 NGOs because of links to
"anti-state" activities and is in the process of examining the
registration certificates of an additional 4,000.

"The Awami League regularly claims that it is the only political party
that will protect democracy and pluralism in Bangladesh, but its
attempts to control NGO activity call this into serious question,"
said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "If previous
governments had attempted to regulate non-governmental organizations
in this way, the Awami League would have rightly claimed that this was
an attempt to stifle freedom of expression and association."

Human Rights Watch pointed out that Bangladesh already has in place
other laws through which terrorist or illegal activities by NGOs and
others can be addressed. The criminal law, anti-terror laws, tax law,
and existing regulations governing NGO activities already provide a
framework to deal with individuals within NGOs or organizations
involved in illegal activity.

"The government has not shown any serious terror threat arising from
'many' NGOs nor why the existing criminal law is insufficient to deal
with any problems that may arise," said Adams. "This is just a smoke
screen to exert political control over civil society."

NGOs play a critical role in Bangladesh in areas such as poverty
reduction, economic development, health and education, and human
rights. The government estimates that there are nearly 50,000 active
NGOs operating throughout the country.

NGOs operating in Bangladesh already face an overly cumbersome and
intrusive regulatory process, including needing multiple approvals to
register and to implement projects. NGOs operating in Bangladesh have
to clear what the International Centre for Non-Profit Law (ICNL)
describes as a process "complicated by delays and hurdles," including
non-transparency in authorization of registration by the Home
Ministry, the police, or the National Security Intelligence.

NGOs operating in Bangladesh report long delays and arbitrary refusals
at various stages of the approvals process. The NGO Affairs Bureau in
the Prime Minister's office often simply rejects any requests for
registration or project proposals on arbitrary grounds, at times for
apparently political reasons. NGOs have reported to Human Rights Watch
that corruption is a major problem, with bribes demanded to gain
approval in the NGO Affairs Bureau and at various ministries and local
government offices.

Human Rights Watch noted that the Bangladeshi government is also on
the verge of announcing new laws restricting the receipt of foreign
contributions to NGOs. The new law would require several levels of
prior government approval for any project which relies in any part on
foreign donations.

Human Rights Watch has previously criticized the Indian Foreign
Contributions Regulation Act, which is very similar to the Bangladeshi
draft law, because of the unnecessary burdens it places on foreign
contributions for charitable work, as well as to other similar laws or
draft laws in other countries.

"The Bangladeshi government increasingly acts as though it is
interested in controlling the NGO sector to a minute level detail,
which will only stifle civil society activity rather than encourage
it," said Adams. "Instead of setting up a commission to breathe down
the necks of NGOs, the government should set up a commission to
investigate the alleged epidemic of corruption in the NGO Affairs
Bureau and other government agencies which steal funds from projects
that serve the public interest."

Department of Justice Seeks to Recover Approximately $3 Million in Illegal Proceeds from Foreign Bribe Payments

WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice has filed a forfeiture action against accounts worth nearly $3 million that are alleged to be the proceeds of a wide-ranging conspiracy to bribe public officials in Bangladesh and their family members in connection with various public work projects, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich of the Criminal Division announced today.

The forfeiture action was filed Jan. 8, 2009, in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia against funds located in Singapore held by multiple account holders. The forfeiture complaint relates primarily to alleged bribes paid to Arafat "Koko" Rahman, the son of the former prime minister of Bangladesh, in connection with public works projects awarded by the government of Bangladesh to Siemens AG and China Harbor Engineering Company.  According to the forfeiture complaint, the majority of funds in Koko's account are traceable to bribes allegedly received in connection with the China Harbor project, which was a project to build a new mooring containment terminal at the port in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

"This action shows the lengths to which U.S. law enforcement will go to recover the proceeds of foreign corruption, including acts of bribery and money laundering," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich. "Not only will the Department, for example, prosecute companies and executives who violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, we will also use our forfeiture laws to recapture the illicit facilitating payments often used in such schemes."

Siemens Aktiengesellschaft (Siemens AG), a German corporation, and three of its subsidiaries pleaded guilty on Dec. 15, 2008, to violations of and charges related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Specifically, Siemens Bangladesh admitted that from May 2001 to August 2006, it caused corrupt payments of at least $5,319,839 to be made through purported business consultants to various Bangladeshi officials in exchange for favorable treatment during the bidding process on a mobile telephone project.  At least one payment to each of these purported consultants was paid from a U.S. bank account.

According to the forfeiture complaint, the bribe payments from Siemens AG and China Harbor Engineering Company were made in U.S. dollars, and the illicit funds flowed through financial institutions in the United States before they were deposited in accounts in Singapore, thereby subjecting them to U.S. jurisdiction. Money laundering laws in the United States cover financial transactions that flow through the United States involving proceeds of foreign offenses, including foreign bribery and extortion.

In August 2006, the President announced a National Strategy to Internationalize Efforts Against Kleptocracy to fight high-level corruption around the world. This strategy combines the policy and law enforcement tools of several federal agencies, including the Departments of Justice, Treasury, State and Homeland Security.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Chief Linda Samuel and Trial Attorney Frederick Reynolds of the Criminal Division's Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section. Additional assistance was provided by the Criminal Division's Office of International Affairs. The case was investigated by the FBI's Washington Field Office in cooperation with Bangladeshi law enforcement.

Re: [chottala.com] Rogue politics of Bangladesh ex Prime Minister ....

BNP developed a very cozy relationship with with AIPAC (American Israeli Public AffairsCommittee). BNP's US-Ambassador Shamser Mubin Chowdhury (an inner circle operative of Madam Khaleda Zia) appointed  Dr, Richard Benkins  of AIPAC as a lobbyist for BNP.
It may be mentioned here that Dr, Richard Benkins of  American Israel Public Affairs
Committee [AIPAC - a Mossad front in USA], is a registered Foreign agent with the
US department of State.

Benkin is a pro-Israel activist in USA with Mossad connections.
Quotation from  Zoglul Husain's writing:
"Dr Richard L Benkin is a Jewish American who serves Israel ............"   .
.....Yet, it is the Khalada Zia's "Bangladesh Government, who in their great wisdom (!),
appointed Dr Richard L Benkin in April 2006 ..."   .....

Verily, world's only Muslim Zionist Salauddin Shoaib Chowdhury (Weekly Blitz) had
until very recently been active with full support for BNP-Jamaat Jote ....
