[chottala.com] China's Brahmaputra Diversion Project :Bangladesh will be the worst sufferer .....

Don't get so complacent about India getting the Bamboo through its butt........The 2,906 km-long Brahmaputra is one of Asia's longest rivers that traverses its first stretch of 1,625 km in Tibet, the next 918 km in India and the remaining 363 km in Bangladesh before flowing into the Bay of Bengal.  .... Perhaps Bangladesh will be the worst sufferer due to China's Brahmaputra diversion project.
The Meghna & Jamuna are the main distributary of the great river Brahmaputra in Bangladesh. The Jamuna flows south and joins the Padma River near Goalundo Ghat. Merged with the Padma it meets the Meghna River near Chandpur. Its waters then flow into the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna River. The Brahmaputra River basin is the lifeline of  Bangladesh to a great extent....

......China's building a dam and diverting the Brahmaputra river from its upper reaches is a serious matter of concern to the people of Bangladesh too ... Experts say that if the project is commissioned, it would almost certainly have devastating consequences on the lives of millions of people in Bangladesh (in addition to people of Assam and it's Seven sisters .....)  ....

No immediate alarm on China dam on Brahmaputra: India

NEW DELHI: India today downplayed apprehensions that a dam being constructed by China on river Brahmaputra will affect the country, saying the project is not a cause for "immediate alarm".

"It is a fact that China is constructing a dam at Zangmu in middle reaches of Yarlung Tsango (as Brahmaputra is called in Tibet). We have ascertained from our own sources that this a run of the river hydro-electric project which does not store water and will not adversely impact downstream areas in India," External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said.

"Therefore, I believe there is no cause for immediate alarm," he told reporters while replying to a question on reports of construction of a dam by China on Brahmaputra River.

Krishna also said that recent reports about Chinese plans to construct a dam on the Brahmaputra and possibly divert the river waters to Northern China are "not new but based on previously known facts".

Noting that a large portion of the catchment area of Brahmaputra is within Indian territory, Krishna said, "It is important that states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam harness and utilise the waters of Brahmaputra. This is a really a very important issue."

Krishna, who left for Kazakhstan today to attend the Sanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, said he was not sure whether bilateral issues between India and China would be raised there.

It is part of China's initiative to shift focus from building dams on domestic rivers to international rivers like Brahmaputra .
