[chottala.com] UNIDO sees country as global competitor.: Bangladesh’s New Metrology Lab Strengthens Country’s Industrial Base

Bangladesh's New Metrology Lab Strengthens Country's Industrial Base

UNIDO sees country as global competitor.

(UNIDO: Vienna) -- Kandeh K. Yumkella, director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), says that Bangladesh has the potential to become the metrology hub of South Asia.

"Bangladesh is growing rapidly, and global metrology and calibration standards could drive this process," notes Yumkella during the inauguration ceremony for the National Metrology Laboratory of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution.

"The establishment of the state-of-the art National Metrology Laboratory has been a vital part of UNIDO's effort to contribute to growth and poverty-reduction in Bangladesh through developing, strengthening, and diversifying the country's production and export base," says Yumkella. "The laboratory constitutes a key industrial service institution of Bangladesh, especially with regard to meeting the objectives of the Bangladesh Vision 2021."

He adds that in the industrial sector, Bangladesh has demonstrated the ability to compete globally.

During his three-day visit, Yumkella met the country's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina; the Minister for Industries, Dilip Barua; Foreign Minister, Dipu Moni; and the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, F. M. Ruhal Haque. They discussed cooperation on green industrial development, including environmental management and disposal of medical waste, renewable energy, energy efficiency, agribusiness development, and women's economic empowerment.

Yumkella also took part in the launch of the second phase of the EUR 16.9 million Better Work and Standard Program, funded by the European Union and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.

UNIDO will soon open a desk in Bangladesh to coordinate the projects the organization implements in the country. It will be headed by Zaki Uz Zaman.

[chottala.com] Bangladesh sequences jute genome

Bangladesh sequences jute genome

Wed, Jun 16th, 2010 5:06 pm BdST

Dhaka, June 16 (bdnews24.com)—Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has disclosed in the parliament that Bangladeshi researchers have successfully done genome sequencing of jute which will contribute to improving jute fibre.

The discovery will revive jute, which is familiar as golden fibre, its lost glory. Jute will grow amid the hostile weather due to the climate change.

Bangladesh is now the second developing country in Asia to dig out the history of jute's evolution, she told the parliament on Wednesday.

"Many people may ask the question about the application of the genome sequencing. It will improve the quality of jute fibre and help saplings to survive in adverse weather caused by climate change," said Hasina.

She cancelled the scheduled the question-answer hour for prime minister to make the announcement.

The prime minister said the discovery would also help the farmers to better manage pest.

"This will increase jute production leading to a better future for the farmers."

Hasina said a group of Bangladeshi researchers of Dhaka University's Biochemistry and Biotechnology departments, led by an expatriate, Dr Maqsudul Alam, made the accomplishment.

"We maintained the highest level of secrecy to make the announcement in the parliament," she said.

"We must get the intellectual rights on this discovery," said the prime minister.

This achievement would brighten Bangladesh's external image in the field of research as a handful of countries in the world had made the accomplishment, said Hasina.
