[chottala.com] From Karachi’s brothels and jails, Jakia has risen to become a respected tailor in her village

From Karachi's brothels and jails, Jakia has risen to become a respected tailor in her village
Recall 22-year-old Jakia Khatoon who had a traumatic journey from her home in
Tripura to Pakistani brothels and Karachi jails, and who's return hogged the national limelight last November?

'Fighting poverty is not an enjoyable option, but I don't want to go back to the brothel'

Today, Jakia is the most dependable tailor for stitching women's garments in the village of Rabindranagar under Sonamura sub-division in Tripura, on the Bangladesh border. She is the bread-winner for her eight-member family. "It's a hard life and fighting poverty is not an enjoyable option, but still, I don't want to return to those days," she says.

Her day starts early in the morning. She prepares food for the family and by 9am enters her shop, ready to take orders from customers. A self-employed woman, Jakia got the sewing machine from the Kathalia Panchayat Samity. A woman taught her stitching that has ensured her a daily income of Rs 50 to 60.

Jakia's nightmare started with her marriage in 1997 in the Comilla district of Bangladesh. The marriage lasted for a year and she was thrown out of the house. Instead of returning to her ancestral home in India, she went to Dhaka looking for a job. It was here that she found herself trapped in a sex-trafficking racket which took her to Karachi.

Jakia was sold to a brothel owner, she was brutalised and beaten. There was no hope, till a raid by the Pakistani police rescued her. But it failed to ensure her freedom as she was a 'foreigner'. She was jailed.

Her trauma ended in November 2003 when India and Pakistan decided to release prisoners as a gesture of goodwill. She, along with others, returned to India and subsequently went back to Rabindranagar.

Unable to maintain the large family, Jakia's father Dudu Mian met Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and sought a job for her. Since Jakia was illiterate, he advised her to join the local Sarbasiksha centre. Jakia pledged to become literate. She attends the local Sarbashikha centre every evening. "I will keep the promise I made to myself. I want to live a new life," she says.

These are all rubish.

Forget about all these argument & counter argument.
We are all overqualified, understand much much better than our Politicians.
So, why to vote for them, think something new from your furtile brain & move on.

So, stop all these nonsense AL Vs BNP. What is use of exerting ourselves like this.

dear Mr. Haider,

Fantastic, i appreciate your words ( and wish so)-- MORE POLITICALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE , NOT BLIND SIDED. but can't believe, when we see so many happy/ foolish mails like " THE ACHIEVEMENT OF HASINA ,,, BLA BLA BLA."

if you can see your mail correctly, you will get the same points as i raised!! --"Ms. Hasina and her party is in power just for an year and it's literally not possible to attain all goals within such a short time. Let's wait and see. " just to emphasise this line, i have brought up the old records and tried to say, do NEVER JUMP FOR THESE UGLY PARTIES -- ONLY BLINDS CAN BELIEVE THEM - NOT THE POLITICALLLY KNOWLEDGED PEOPLE at this stage!!

playing golf is not a crime -- rather pure entertainment for pure gentle men like you. But he was a murderer ( open secret). when there was already warrant against him, how such a FREE CITIZEN can play with the head of defence in public. shame man !! you can't see and arguing !!

i believe you dont have any land in BOSHUNDHARA. if you had you must know, that no one gets the reciept for whole the amount they pay. the reciept shows much less amount -- so the of tax is paid less than the required value to the government. do you think the government/ crime branch do not know this ?? ha man !!

food price -- gentlemen, i know the price is too high all over, i knew it from the time of BNP. now you understand the cause of price increase, why did not you under stand during BNPs time ??

i as a general public understand the world economy ( a very little bit to convince about price increase), you think Hasina could not understand ??

why did she give commitment for lowering the price at such a rate before election?? does not it mean she lied to the public?? or you will say that she never new world economy?? if she didn't- from such a position, how poor her quality is -- did you think!!!

I may not be so much of politically knowledged person as you are, but being a dumb head also i know that nothing is gonna changed by these parties -- nothing can be.

i wish you intelligents could understand too!!

WE all should raise our voice together against these parties to save the country -- or if cowered like me, should shut up and do the best to the public in personal ways, which virtually do not have any effect to the fate of mass community.

best regards

Yes Mr. Rabby, we are indeed fools and are also blind but we are not against the country in any way. If giving opinions is a crime and considered anti-state then surely we must be imprisoned.

If you do not mind, kindly allow me to point out that Ms. Hasina and her party is in power just for an year and it's literally not possible to attain all goals within such a short time. Let's wait and see. If BAL does not fulfill their assurances then we shall vote her out during the next elections. The people of Bangladesh, unfortunaely for many, have become much more polically knowladgeable, not blindsided.

Food prices, the world over have increased considerably, if you follow the world news, therefore Bangladesh is no exception.
Education has increased manifold, not because of BAL or BNP but because have become a little more intelligent and strive for education. In the BNP time we saw a huge increase in Madrasa education, which unfortunately does not benefit the mass public, well Madrasa spread has reduced, so you may have a point there.
World records shows that Bangladesh is doing extremely well in Family Planning scheme and the population is in check, that's because of hardwork of many NGO's not BNP or BAL, so what's your point?
Any free citizen, with the capacity and connection can play golf, I did not know that there were restictions on recreations and games, so why write on trifling matters when there are millions of other legitimate points.

Please do not sing like Ms. Zia and Mr. Delwar Hossain that Bangladesh is sold out and Ms. Hasina is doing her best to give out the country to India, lest you forget, Bangladesh is also Ms. Hasina's country and her family paid dearly for Bangladesh.

Finally sir,

 All five Mujib killers hanged
Thu, Jan 28th, 2010 1:23 am BdST
Dhaka, Jan 28 (bdnewsw24.com)--The captured five convicts, who killed Bangladesh's founding father 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, were executed by hanging in the early hours of Thursday at the Dhaka Central Jail.

The five were Syed Faruk Rahman, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed and Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khanâ€"all former army officers, and freedom fighters.
.
Mohiuddin Ahmed and Bazlul Huda were the first two to be executed minutes after Wednesday midnight. Syed Faruk Rahman and Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan were executed about a half hour later. A K M Mohiuddin was executed a few minutes before 1.00am Thursday.

The bodies were handed over to the families.

A Supreme Court Appellate Division bench, headed by the chief justice, dismissed the review petitions of the five on Wednesday morning.

All formalities were completed at a feverish pace since then including disposing of Faruk Rahman's petition for clemency.

bdnews24.com correspondents say they heard slogans in Old Dhaka and Mirpur as hundreds of people were out on the streets throughout the capital as well as on rooftops near the jJail.

Five ambulances arrived just after midnight and were parked outside the heavily guarded prison as preparations were on to execute the five convicts within hours of the president rejecting the last mercy petition late Wednesday evening.

Police and elite RAB were guarding all roads leading to the Central Jail in densely-populated Old Dhaka, throwing a four-layer security blanket around it.

Prisons guards, RAB, armed police and metropolitan police formed the layers near and around the Nazimuddin Road jail, according to chief correspondent Sumon Mahmud.

Police chased away a group of slogan-shouting people when they marched through an alley as senior officials started arriving.

The home secretary arrived at 11:25pm Wednesday at the jail gate, preceded by just five minutes by a police car carrying a number of coffins, putting to rest all speculations about executions of the five.

The Dhaka civil surgeon. district magistrate and additional district magistrate had entered the jail at 10:30pm.

At 11:30pm, the DMP commissioner was seen walking into the high-security Central Jail.

FATE SEALED

Within about 10 hours of a review petition's rejection by a Supreme Court bench on Wednesday morning, the fate of the convicts was sealed.

A four-member special bench of the Appellate Division at 9.27am gave the ruling rejecting the review petitions. The hearing took all of two minutes, beginning at 9:25am, to deliberate and finally reject the petitions.

A high-level meeting of policy makers and civil servants began at noon and continued for almost three hours.

This meeting, attended by the law and home ministers, the state ministers for home and law, inspector general of prisons, the chief prosecutor of the Bangabandhu murder case, the home secretary and the acting law secretary, among others, apparently decided on the course of action, according to sources privy to what transpired in the meeting.

The law minister, Shafique Ahmed, refused to be specific, telling the press that the sentences would be executed within Jan 31, emerging from that meeting shortly after 3.00pm.

He cited the jail code that executions had to be carried out between three and four weeks of issuance of the death warrants which came on Jan 3.

Jail authorities then called relatives of the five convicts on death row to come and visit.

In a departure from regular practice, the death row convicts were allowed to remain with their families well into the evening, until about 8.00pm, according to sources in the Dhaka Central Jail as well as the family members themselves.

In the meantime, Syed Faruk Rahman wrote his mercy petition addressed to the president.

The petition, sent through the prisons authorities to the home ministry and seen by bdnews24.com correspondent Prodip Chowdhury, travelled at double-quick speed to the president through the Prime Minister's Office.

Says Prodip Choudhury: "The petition was received and despatched by the home and law ministries virtually within minutes as all relevant top civil servants were present there in the minister's office.

"It was merely a matter of signing a piece of paper and handing it to the person across the table."

A Bangabhaban source confirmed bdnews24.com that president Zillur Rahman had rejected Faruk's mercy petition at about 7.30pm.

Another death row convict, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, did not petition the president for mercy, according to the source in Bangabhaban.

The clemency pleas of the other three jailed convicts â€" AKM Mohiuddin, Mohiuddin Ahmed and Bazlul Huda â€" had already been rejected by the president earlier this month.

The Bangabhaban source told our correspondent to wear enough warm clothes. "It's going to be cold tonight."

A highly-placed prisons source told bdnews24.com around 10pm that coffins "have been bought".

VERDICT

The Supreme Court rejected appeals of the five men in a landmark verdict on Nov 19, clearing the way for hanging of all 12 former army officers convicted of the Aug 15, 1975 assassination, seven of whom are fugitives.

A five-strong bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Justice Mohammed Tafazzal Islam, set aside the appeals against previous court sentences to hang them for the multiple murders.

Justice Islam, in his six-minute delivery, upheld the verdict of the third High Court judge made in 2001.

The verdict and the execution are seen to help excavate a past that had been all but wiped from official history.

The guiding figure of Bangladesh independence, Mujib was killed with 16 members of his family, including wife and three sons, on Aug 15, 1975.

His daughters, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, escaped death only because they were in Europe.

The trial resumed after a long gap with the return to power of Hasina in January this year. The trial, however, had slowed down and came to a halt during the regime of her rival, Khaleda Zia, during 2001-06.

Almost all the 15 officers were direct beneficiaries of the military coup and were rewarded with plum diplomatic jobs overseas until Hasina became prime minister in 1996. The coup leaders were pampered by successive governments including the BNP and publicly boasted of 'saving the country from tyranny'.

Khaleda's husband, Ziaur Rahman, himself a war hero, sent out most officers believed to be involved in the murder conspiracy on diplomatic assignments for many years.

Sheikh Mujib had imposed one-party rule, months before his assassination, and his critics accused him of corruption. But Hasina has insisted that her father would have returned democratic rule.

The government of Khandker Mushtaq Ahmed that was installed after the bloody military coup passed an ordinance in November that year indemnifying the perpetrators and closing the door on the possibility of a trial.

The Awami League government revoked the indemnity ordinance in 1996 and cleared the way for the trial. Then, Sheikh Mujib's personal assistant Muhitul Islam filed a case on Oct 2, 1996 with Dhanmondi Police Station against 24 persons.

The Appellate Division had accepted the appeals for hearing on five points on July 23, 2007.

They are: the third High Court judge did not give his ruling lawfully, the filing of First Information Report was delayed, army mutiny was held on Aug 15, conspiracies were plotted and the High Court did not properly analyse evidence.

On Nov 8, 1998, Dhaka sessions judge Golam Rasul awarded death sentences to 15 of the 20 accused.

They are Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda, Lt Col (dismissed) Syed Faruk Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Lt Col (retd) Muhiuddin Ahmed, Lt Col (retd) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, Lt Col (retd) Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Maj (retd) Shariful Haque Dalim, Maj (retd) Ahmed Shariful Hossain, Lt Col (retd) AM Rashed Chowdhury, Lt Col (retd) S H M B Noor Chowdhury, Lt Col (retd) Md Abdul Aziz Pasha, Capt (retd) Md Kismat Hashem, Capt (retd) Nazmul Hossain Ansar, Capt (retd) Abdul Mazed, and Risaldar (retd) Moslemuddin.

Four of the convictsâ€"Major (retd) Bazlul Huda, Lt Col (dismissed) Syed Faruk Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan and Lt Col (retd) Mohiuddin Ahmedâ€"appealed to the High Court against the verdict.

The High Court on Dec 14, 2000 found 10 former army officers guilty of the murder. But the two-member high court panel was split over the guilt of five others who had also been convicted and sentenced to hang by a lower court two years ago.

One judge--Justice A B M Khairul Haque-- retained death sentences of all the 15, while the second--Justice Mohammed Ruhul Amin-- acquitted for lack of evidence five--Mohiuddin Ahmed, Ahmed Shariful Hossain, Md Kismat Hashem, Nazmul Hossain Ansar, and Moslemuddin.

A third High Court judge--Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim--acquitted three of the 15 convicts--Md Kismat Hashem, Ahmed Shariful Hossain, and Nazmul Hossain Ansar.

Finally sir, I am not any supporter of BAL and I do not like the way Ms. Hasina is adamant to hang some people, just as Late Ziaur Rahman did in his time.

Dear Dina Khan,

It's amusing to read your postings. We all have somewhat stressful lives and it's relaxing to note your humorous writings.

If Bangladesh Awami League is not doing politics then it must be Bangladesh Nationalist Party who are doing politics. BNP was surely doing politics during it's ruling tenure.  We, the public, have witnessed it, felt it, endured it and suffered it.

It's strange to note how BNP and it's supporters hate India, so everything which BAL does is for India and BAL becomes the agents of India. How sad. But what progress did BNP do in their term, not even extra electrictity, gas or oil. The KDA plan in Anowara, Chittagong was held up for years as KDA refused to pay Mr. Tariq his dues. More that 1000 people could be employed there. There are many many instances were development was held up just because payment was not secured. The people lost, but who cares for the people of Bangladesh, we are merely pawns of the powers. BAL may be the agents of India and BNP becomes the agents of Pakistan.

Hartal, it the tool used by the opposition party, it was there in the past, it is here in the present and shall be in the future. As soon as BNP gets enough support we shall see it, so please be patient.

Dina, kindly grow up and try and learn a little history.

Regards.

Actually
BAL leaders are not doing politics & are not working for the interest to the people of Bangladesh
They are doing Poly-Tricks how can go in power for looting the public money.
Actually they are real hijakars looters & faithful agents of India...
So they are always doing hartal works, breaking burning closing Mills Industries, destroying education infrastructures when they are not in power.
They are working as open secret agents of India when they are in power so that India can help BAL to stay in power.
For this reason BAL ministers BAL politicians are speaking for India & are doing works for the interest of India not speaking for the people of Bangladesh & not doing works for the interest to the people of Bangladesh They are expert in making fool the people of Bangladesh by lying & by miss interpreting....

Transit Agreement only Through National Referendum
Abid Bahar
Hasina's achievements is nothing but all talk and little action. The joint statement by the two countries was about future concerns only:
"The two Prime Ministers witnessed the signing in their presence of the following accords:
a. Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters
b. Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons
c. Agreement on Combating International Terrorism, Organized Crime and Illicit Drug Trafficking
d. Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Power Sector
e. Cultural Exchange Programme"
Bangladesh needs to remove Hasina's puppet government through mass Andolon: Hasina was chosen by the 1/11  agents through the digital deception is now puttling shakles on Bangladesh; She has no right to give India transit for free.
Transit Agreement could only be done with mandate from people and only Through a National Referendum.
 India is fooling us twice.

[chottala.com] Transit Agreement

I believe that it is everyone's right to have their own political beliefs, it's a wonderful right and that could be practiced the world over, but again getting over rights is disastrous for the well being of the common people.

Hartal, bandh, or general strikes may bring some benefits to the parties who call them but it also hurts in great magnitude to many.Boycott is another form of disobedience carried out by many parties for minor gains but has criplling effect on the countries image. Both our great leaders and parties, when in opposition, use both these tactics for gain general support.

The general people voted for the candidates who stood in the elections to represent them in parliment, to speak out their cause, oppose, debate, approve and participate in the development but boycotting the parliment does not serve the purpose of the public. I blame both BAL and BNP, instead of tearing each other's hair they should bury their hatchet, the sooner the better. Just because both these parties are at daggers drawn, the supporter have similiar mentality. Insulting does not bring anyone closer, instead by showing compasion will have better effects. We can all find faults with BAL and BNP but surely they have done somethings which benefitted the country in some way or another.

Have you people ever heard " It cut both ways". Let's assume the production cost of rice is Tk.25.00 and the market price is Tk.20.00, who suffers, it's the farmers. Next season production of rice will become less and the price will go up. So even if Ms. Hasina wants to lessen the price of rice it's not going to happen, unless free fertilizers and water becomes manditory. How can that happen, the city dwellers needs power, the factories and industries need power, so power have to be shared. Production in all sectors will suffer, so the price of rice.

Try and bury the hachet and work together, our differences should not effect the general people.

Regards.

Haider
