[chottala.com] Re: [khabor.com] International Mother Language day in USA

Dear Mr. Saifur R. Osmani (Jeetu),

You have done a wonderful positive thing. I hope that through massive publicity, you will be able to justify to the USPS. We are asking our friends and families in the U.S. and elsewhere to ask their friends to start to use the stamp to generate demand.

Good luck with your venture.

Dear Mr. Momen,
Thank you very much for your e-mail. We have go to long way and we'll not stop until our victory achieved. This is the beginning of our mission. Thank you for your advice and I'll keep posted if any development from the USPS. I'll continue to promote for our 'Ekushey' stamp. I' m planning to have a committee will other spoken language speaking representative i.e., Chineese, Korean, Arabic, Russians, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu etc. What do you think?  This will boost up the awareness about the spirit of 'Ekushey' and also give them the opportunity to contribute with their good ideas. Our hands will be more stronger than before, if other countries can join in.

The design of stamp might change as because of the international participation but we have to have somewhere 'Central Saheed Minar's ' picture on the stamp as because of the origin of the Language movements in Bangladesh. We might have to justify to the USPS and we all needed to be vocal on that issue. Let me know, if you need any help without any hesitation. Cell: 213.400.4948

THANK YOU.

Regards.

Saifur R. Osmani (Jeetu)
Los Angeles, California.

Note: I'm trying to get the promotional advertisemnt through our satellite bangla Television channel in USA to promote the stamp. If you have any sources to do something, please do so.

Dear Mr. Osmani:
I thought it is a great idea .....you did superb.  You deserve our thanks and gratitudes. We are proud of you.
We all should try to buy it so that eventually the USPS picks it up as their regular stamp as you stated (I know I was requested to buy EID stamps and we did and as a result USPS continued printing it).  Don't worry for the critics. The stamp is beautiful and it represents our pride, the Ekusey...... it's not personal.  You took the leadership.. ..you had the vision.  We should support and encourage you and we will do.  Do what you think is right and I hope, all Bangladeshi origins in the U. S. would try to help you. If your motive is right, Almighty God will help you. There is no doubt in my mind. However, make sure that if the sale is 'reasonable' the USPS 'surely' picks it ups their stamp. Let them give you a guarantee.
We shall buy it and I agree with you that we would spread out the word to our friends and family to buy it. Thank you again,
Momen

[chottala.com] A closer look at the perceived successes of EC - is it a success yet? We don't t

A closer look at the perceived successes of EC - is it a success yet? We don't think so.
Whenever one talks about successes of the current interim government, the names of Election Commission comes. But if you were to given a chance to criticize this organization, what would you say? What are the weaknesses, if any?

There might be many opinions about the process or criteria on which we should judge the election commissioners job - if they are doing it successfully or not.

However, everyone would agree on one thing. That is how to judge whether an election is successful or not. How?

An election is successful when the defeated party accepts the defeat. It is a very simple, yet most powerful test for the success of an election.

So, what is the biggest challenge of our election commissioners? It is not all the things that they are engaged in (which are all necessary) for last one year. They will also be doing many other things in coming days. But after all is said and done, all these technicalities will not ensure their success. The success of their work would depend on how the defeated party reacts after the result. The question is whether the Election Commission as institution is keeping their eye on the big picture, whether they are developing mechanisms using the technicalities to make sure that once the election is over, the result is being accepted graciously by the competing parties.

For the case of Bangladesh, using this test, the job of EC is probably one of the most difficult job on earth. In recent years, we have not seen any election passes that test. Not even the election that was held in 1991. When our analysts talks about post-1990 democratic elections, we often talk about how successful our elections were. We would like to disagree. None of those elections held in 1991, 1996 or 2001 passed the litmas test of successful election. In none of the cases, the defeated parties accepted the result graciously.

So, instead of being project managers of different technical projects that are going on, our election commissioners should be very much worried about their success. They have a very tough job in their hand.

Will the losing party accept defeat? - that should be the biggest headache of the Election Commissioners. If not, the election is a failure - and so are the commissioners. No matter how well you manage an IT project of making voter list, no matter how many times you hold dialogues, no matter how many restrictions and laws you come up with. Bottom line is whether you are working to create an environment where defeating party accepts their defeat. You have to start from there. Do you think the election commission is aware of this bottom line? We hope they do.

If the election commission really wants to become what the country really needs, they have to go back to the basics. Based on that analysis, they have to make sure that they have an effective communication strategy. If the commucation is done well, the EC can serve the country well. Otherwise, not. All the technicalities should be used to develop a mechanism that create confidence about the system among the competing parties.

[chottala.com] $3 Billion refinery in BD!!

BD needs to do everything possible to make these types of investments a reality.....though the track record of Hi-Tech is somewhat sketchy at times

Rana

================================

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia's Hi-Tech International Group (HTIG) and Cosmopolitan Oil Refinery Management Limited (CPORML) of Bangladesh signed a deal to set up a $3 billion oil refinery with a capacity to produce 300,000 barrels of oil products a day, Gulf News reported.

The plant will be set up with 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) and it will import more than five million tons of crude oil from Saudi Arabia, the companies said in a joint statement. The entire final product will be exported in neighboring counties, they added.

The production capacity of the proposed refinery will be more than three times of the state-run Bangladesh Eastern Refinery Limited (BERL), the lone refinery plant in the country, the statement said.

Bangladesh imports 3.8 million tons of fuel every year, including about 1.5 million tons of crude oil, officials said.

Britain calls for democracy in Bangladesh

DHAKA (AFP) — British Foreign Secretary David Miliband urged Bangladesh's military backed government to stick by its pledge to lift a state of emergency and hold elections before the end of 2008.
The government in Dhaka, backed by the country's powerful military, has pledged to hold fresh polls by December after cleaning up Bangladesh's notoriously corrupt politics, and has launched a massive anti-graft drive.
"We certainly look forward to the commitment of this government be fulfilled to free and fair elections at the latest by December 2008," Miliband said after talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury.
"A fully functional democracy cannot operate under a state of emergency," Miliband said on his arrival in the South Asian country.
Bangladesh's emergency government took power in January 2007, one day after elections were cancelled following months of violence over vote-rigging allegations.
At least 150 top politicians including two former prime ministers have been arrested as part of an anti-corruption crackdown. Dozens of them have been tried and jailed.
Miliband will meet the head of the caretaker government Fakhruddin Ahmed on Saturday, and hold more talks with Bangladesh's foreign minister.
"What I will be exploring with the minister over the next 36 hours and discuss more widely is how we can ensure as soon as possible Bangladesh becomes a fully functional democracy with all the benefits," he said.
His call came less than a week after a senior state department official of the United States met top officials here and urged early elections and withdrawal of emergency measures.
