[chottala.com] GLOBAL HUNT OVER PADMA SCAM: A postscript

GLOBAL HUNT OVER PADMA SCAM: A postscript

M. Shahidul Islam in Toronto

North American investigators have now gone beyond the allegedly direct
perpetrators, already charged, and the suspect beneficiaries of the
bribery scandal of conspiracy to collude in over billing of works in
Padma Bridge and reported advance payment to the tune of $35 million
by Montreal-based Canadian Consultancy firm SNC-Lavalin. They are now
digging into the background and character of suspected distant
beneficiaries and sources of finance of asset-building and transfers
of all possible beneficiaries or indirect.

A distant beneficiary's police records of minor nature have also been dug up.
The records, as learnt from a reliable source, show that the distant
suspect was arrested on June 14, 1998 in Tarrant County, Texas, and
charged on two counts of carrying an unlicensed handgun and one count
of driving while intoxicated; followed by a conviction for drunken
driving, imprisonment for 120 days, sentenced to 24 months of
probation and $500 fine.

He was also charged on February 6, 2000 with reckless driving and
possessing a radar detector in Hanover County, Virginia; followed by
one day incarceration and fine. He was again arrested on March 19,
2000 and charged with reckless driving in Fairfax County, Virginia;
followed by a suspended 30-day jail sentence and 12 months probation
along with a $400 fine.

Next he was charged on April 29, 2001 with speeding in Rappahannock
County, Virginia. After a gap of 3 years he was again charged on May
20, 2004 with speeding in Arlington County, Virginia. It is unclear
what relevance these records may have with the SNC-Lavalin case.

More relevant to the case might be the fact that a suspect with very
high-level connections in Bangladesh and her spouse have been involved
in high-spending dubious dealings over the following assets:
1. A single family home at 456 North Bay Point Way, Jacksonville,
Florida; purchased from previous joint owners Merrill and Priscilla
King.
2. A single family home at 845 York Way, Maitland, Florida; purchased
from previous joint owners David and Elizabeth Cocchiarella.
3. A single family home at 2065 W 119th Avenue, Miramar, Florida;
purchased from Pulte Home Corporation.

Investigators are also tracing the source of funds used for paying
outstanding mortgages for two luxurious homes owned by the same
people: one at 3817 Bell Manor Court, Falls Church, Virginia, and, the
other at 4823 Martin Street, Alexandria. In addition, assets of about
half- a- dozen corporate entities owned by the same people are being
looked into under the ongoing probe into the alleged kickbacks from
the Padma bridge scam and possible other corrupt practices.
