The 41 grenades seized in Satkhira on Friday night are identical to those used in the August 21 blasts at an Awami League (AL) rally in 2004.

Like the ones detonated to cause August 21 carnage, these too are of Arges brand and were supplied by Moulana Tajuddin, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) officials said yesterday.

Tajuddin is brother of former deputy minister and BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu, who is now detained in a case filed for the blasts that left 24 AL leaders and workers killed and scores injured.

"The grenades recovered from Satkhira are similar in every detail with those used in the August 21 attack," Director General (DG) of Rab Hassan Mahmood Khandkar told a press briefing at Rab headquarters in Uttara.

The elite crime busters made the seizure at Simulia village of Debhata upazila following up leads obtained from Huji leader Mufti Moin Uddin alias Abu Jandal alias Masum Billah.

During the raid, they also picked up Nazrul Islam Ghorami, a suspected operative of Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji).

"The arrests will provide important leads in investigation of August 21 grenade attacks," the Rab DG said.

Huji operations commander Mufti Hannan earlier told investigators that his close aide Moin Uddin alias Abu Jandal led the August 21 grenade attack, said a top Rab official requesting not to be named.

Hannan also said some of the grenades were still in Jandal's possession.

Additional Director General of Rab Col Gulzaruddin Ahmed said they arrested Abu Jandal, 29, at the guesthouse of Memberbari Jam-e Masjid at Banirchala of Joydevpur on February 14.

He said during interrogation, Jandal told Rab members that Nazrul Islam Ghorami might have some grenades hidden somewhere at Shimulia.

Rab officials said Nazrul told them that Jandal had handed him the grenades. He said he does not know anything beyond that, but interrogators believe he is keeping back information.

Gulzar said they had been on the hunt for Jandal for about a year and recently they spotted him at Dhaka Polytechnic Institute. He fled the institute during the clashes between Shibir and Chhatra League last week and took shelter at a madrasa at Faidabad in Uttara.

"From there, he moved to Joydevpur where we finally nabbed him," Col Gulzar told The Daily Star.

Asked whether the militants might go on the offensive, a Rab official said, "Possibility of that is little since the militants are on the run."

He said they would hardly get a chance to regroup as law enforcers and intelligence agencies are working relentlessly to capture them and army personnel fanned out across the country.

At the press conference, the Rab DG said they handed over the arrestees to Debhata Police Station yesterday.

He said Rab is assisting the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), tasked with probing the August 21 blasts, in all possible ways.

JANDAL
Sources said Jandal had been a close associate of Mufti Hannan since 1998. When Hannan was expelled from Huji, he opted to side with him and became an influential member of the Hannan-led Huji. He had led Huji after Hannan's arrest in 2005.

While a student of Jame Ul Ulum Madrasa at Mirpur-14, he caught the attention of Huji leaders.

He quickly rose to the rank of a young leader for his organisation skills and capacity to motivate others, Rab sources said. He was assigned to preach jihad to new recruits.

Rab officials quoting Hannan's statements said the Huji boss and other leaders gave Jandal the responsibility to coordinate the August 21 attack.

He was the one who collected grenades for the attack from Mohammadpur house of Moulana Tajuddin.

NAZRUL
Locals said Nazrul, who had to sell his land to run the family a few years back, moved to the capital in 2005 and soon made a fortune through means still unknown to his neighbours.

A few months ago, he and his family returned to their village home and bought two shoe shops in local markets.

Rab sources said he was mainly a smuggler. They however could not say whether he got involved with Huji.

Locals suspect he was involved in arms smuggling. He might have met Mufti Hannan when the militant kingpin visited Satkhira in 2002 or 2003 and since then he maintained a link with Huji.

Our Satkhira correspondent adds: Nazrul migrated to Bangladesh from India in 1952. He was arrested in 1973-74 for possession of illegal firearms.

Locals said he would often disappear from the area to return after 15/20 days.

His son Hafizur Rahman told journalists that their family was never involved in politics, but they always cast votes for Jamaat-e-Islami.

Meanwhile, police yesterday found Nazrul's house under lock and key.

Bangladesh Military Abuses Its Power under the State of Emergency

No, in this situation, they are doing right.

Dear Mr. Aslam Bhai,
As per your opinion, we should go back before the situation of 1/11. It was a horrible condition.
If somebody force us to go back to that situation, we have no way.
I would like to thanks "RAB" for their good performance.
Shahid

[chottala.com] Saudi Arabia to execute woman for 'witchcraft'

Saudi Arabia to execute woman for 'witchcraft'

Human rights group appeals to Saudi king to stop execution

updated 7:54 a.m. ET, Thurs., Feb. 14, 2008

BEIRUT, Lebanon - A leading human rights group appealed to Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Thursday to stop the execution of a woman accused of witchcraft and performing supernatural acts.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said in a statement that the kingdom's religious police who arrested and interrogated Fawza Falih, and the judges who tried her in the northern town of Quraiyat never gave her the opportunity to prove her innocence in the face of "absurd charges that have no basis in law."

Falih's case underscores shortcomings in Saudi Arabia's Islamic legal system in which rules of evidence are shaky, lawyers are not always present and sentences often depend on the whim of judges.

The most frequent victims are women, who already suffer severe restrictions on daily life in Saudi Arabia: They cannot drive, appear before a judge without a male representative, or travel abroad without a male guardian's permission.

What's the crime?
Witchcraft is considered an offense against Islam in the conservative kingdom.

In Falih's case, the judges who convicted her in April 2006 relied on a coerced confession and on the statements of witnesses who said she had "bewitched" them, according to the group.

Falih retracted her confession in court, claiming it was extracted under duress, and said that as an illiterate woman, she did not understand the document she was forced to fingerprint.

"The fact that Saudi judges still conduct trials for unprovable crimes like 'witchcraft' underscores their inability to carry out objective criminal investigations," said Joe Stork, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

There was no immediate comment on the statement from Saudi Arabia, where government offices are closed on Thursdays, the start of the Muslim weekend.

"Fawza Falih's case is an example of how the authorities failed to comply even with existing safeguards in the Saudi justice system," he added.

The Saudi court cited an instance in which a man allegedly became impotent after being bewitched by Falih, the rights group said.

An appeals court ruled in September 2006 that Falih could not be sentenced to death for witchcraft because she had retracted her confession. But a lower court subsequently reissued the death sentence for the benefit of "public interest" and to "protect the creed, souls and property of this country," the group's statement said.

Forced divorce
Human Rights Watch's statement came a day after Yakin Erturk, the U.N. special investigator for violence against women, wrapped up a 10-day visit to Saudi Arabia during which she highlighted another controversial case that has attracted international criticism.

Ertuk met with Fatima and Mansour al-Timani, who were forcibly divorced by the wife's family on grounds she had married someone from a lesser tribe.

The couple learned of the divorce on Feb. 25, 2006, when police knocked on their door to serve Mansour the divorce papers.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Erturk said she met the wife and husband who were in a "terrible state of mind" and that Saudi officials had promised her arrangements would be made for the couple's reunion, according to Saudi newspaper Arab News.

International fury over Saudi Arabia's plans to behead woman accused of being a witch

Sharia law beheading

Brutal: Saudi law punishes 'witches' by beheading them

Saudi Arabia's religious police plan to behead a woman accused of being a witch, a human rights group said yesterday.

Human Rights Watch has asked the country's king to intervene over "absurd charges that have no basis in law".

Fawza Falih was arrested and interrogated in the northern town of Quraiyat two years ago and was sentenced to death.

The judges who convicted her relied on her forced confession and the statements of witnesses who said she had "bewitched" them.

One man claimed that he became impotent after Falih cast a spell on him.

Witchcraft is considered an offence against Islam in the conservative kingdom.

Falih retracted her confession in court, saying it was extracted under duress and that she could not understand the document because she is illiterate.

The death sentence was lifted on appeal, but reimposed in the name of "public interest" shortly afterwards.

Joe Stork, the Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, said: "The fact that Saudi judges still conduct trials for unprovable crimes like 'witchcraft' underscores their inability to carry out objective criminal investigations.

"Fawza Falih's case is an example of how the authorities failed to comply even with existing safeguards in the Saudi justice system."

Saudi Arabia does not have a written penal code, although a law imposed in 2002 supposedly grants defendants the right to be tried in person and to have a lawyer present during interrogation and trial.

But this is often ignored and sentences can depend on the whim of judges.

The most frequent victims of whimsical rulings are women, who already suffer severe restrictions in their daily life.

Last year, a woman was sentenced to a public lashing after being gang-raped by five men who found her in a car with a man who was not related to her - a crime in itself.

The sentence was lifted after an international outcry.

This story is without equal. Better yet the Saudis are defending the sentencing of the gang rape victim.

Above photo is of a woman and sent to Dr. Homa Darabi 20 days after she received 50 lashes in Iran.

Now imagine 200 lashes for the crime of being gang raped.

[chottala.com] Arrested, caged and DNA tested - for using MP3

Arrested, caged and DNA tested - for using MP3
Tuesday, February 12, 2008
Darren Nixon
Safe and sound: Darren Nixon recovers from his ordeal

A commuter was arrested at gunpoint and had his DNA and fingerprints taken simply for listening to his MP3 player while waiting for a bus.

Darren Nixon was surrounded by armed police after his music player was mistaken for a gun.

When a passer-by saw the 28-year-old get out his black Philips machine to change tracks, she panicked and dialled 999.

Police tracked Mr Nixon using CCTV. As he got off the bus home from work he was surrounded by a firearms unit, who bundled him into a van.

He was then put in a cell and his fingerprints, DNA and mugshot were taken before he was released.

Although police realised it was a false alarm, Mr Nixon, from Stoke-on-Trent, now has to live with his DNA stored on a national database.

The force will also keep on record that he was arrested on suspicion of a firearms offence.

Mr Nixon said: 'It was unreal – I had a completely clean record before this and have always been a law-abiding citizen.' The mechanic said that, as he got off the bus, he saw a policeman gesture but could not hear what he said.

Mr Nixon added: 'As I got closer, I could see that two of the cops had guns. My heart was racing a mile a minute. One of them was hiding behind a car door, looking down his sight at me, and the other was shouting orders and pointing a gun at me.

'I turned the music off and they were telling me to put my hands up in the air.'

DNA records are kept for life so that they can be matched to future samples.

Even suspects who are wrongfully arrested normally stay on the database. Staffordshire Police said a member of the public reported seeing a man pull a gun from his pocket, grip it with both hands and aim.

A spokesman added: 'An operation was put in place and a man matching the description was detained.'
