Militancy still a threat: Moriarty

Dhaka, May 3 (bdnews24.com)—US ambassador James F Moriarty Sunday contradicted opposition leader Khaleda Zia and said terrorism remained very much a threat to Bangladesh.

"In Bangladesh, the recent seizure of weapons in Bhola and continued arrests of JMB members throughout the country demonstrate terrorism remains a concern," said Moriarty told reporters at a "Meet the Press" in the capital.

He said Washington got "disturbing indications" of terrorist threat in Bangladesh.

The ambassador's comment came a day after Khaleda at a public meeting alleged that the Awami League government was talking about militancy to "invite" foreign forces in Bangladesh.

She said her government crushed Islamic militants by executing all of them.

"Attacks in India, Pakistan and other countries around the globe, however, demonstrate the world has a long way to go before we are rid of the scourge of terrorism, " the US envoy added.

He, however, did not elaborate his statement, but said: "There continues to be threat in Bangladesh and my government does believe that there is a threat."

He said reduction in violence in Iraq proved some progress in eliminating terrorism in the world.

Talking to the press meet, organized by the Dhaka Reporters Unity, he said the US would continue to support Bangladesh to strengthen democracy, foster development and handle terrorism.

UNCRC Workshop held at Chittagong

To create Social Mobilization to Implementation of UNCRC at Family Level

UNCRC was adopted long years ago, although till now CR is violating at street, family, society, child and women tortured VAW etc were happening anywhere at all level. Discrimination between male and female children in education, health care services, recreation, freedom of choice and movility are still exists in our society and culture. Domestic workers are tortured and victimized by the employers, many children are still engaged hazardous child labour and finally they going to dark for unknown destination and with out any future dream. Besides so many young and teenage female children forces to suicide by the causes of eve teasing by the a few culprits. The Government have set up ministry of Women and Children Affairs who take action to stop these types of violations and set up Women and Children Special tribal Act for women and children at district level although the picture is not same and it is not stopped and it is creasing day by days. There is no social protection to ensure CRC, so violence on CRC is moving high to day by day. To stop these types of serious evil from society, there is need to create a social movement to implementation of CRC at family to society, otherwise society will be darkness. This was stated at the Workshop on "Implementation of UNCRC and our Obligation" was organized by Integrated Social Development Effort (ISDE) Bangladesh with the help of Bangladesh Shisu Audhikar Forum (BSAF) and TDH Netherlands on last 26 April at CSDF hall Chittagong.

Speakers gives emphasis to formulate laws with the active participation of community people, otherwise it will be useless. In Bangladesh it have many laws but most of them are not familiar to mass people. As result the laws are not useful to protect the rights of citizen. People have no idea about the laws. Besides most the planning concentrated with the high class of citizen it not touched by the low income community people. So common people have to participation the planning process of the country. Speakers also says fever is not a diseases, it is symptom of diseases, it disease control fever automatically controlled. So child and women violation is not disease, poverty it is the route cause child and women violation in the society. If we address this issue, automatically CRC violation will reduced. Speakers also demanding to participation of disadvantaged children in the main stream development process otherwise the total community will not be entitled.

Journalist, Government, Non Government official, teachers, elected representative, social and religious leaders and lawyers were took part the workshop.
