Morocco challenges Mideast Holocaust mind-set

RABAT, Morocco – From the western edge of the Muslim world, the King of Morocco has dared to tackle one of the most inflammatory issues in the Middle East conflict — the Holocaust.

At a time when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's dismissal of the Holocaust has made the biggest headlines, King Mohammed VI has called the Nazi destruction of the Jews "one of the most tragic chapters of modern history," and has endorsed a Paris-based program aimed at spreading the word among fellow Muslims.

Many in the Islamic world still ignore or know little about the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews during World War II. Some disbelieve it outright. Others argue that it was a European crime and imagine it to be the reason Israel exists and the Palestinians are stateless.

The sentiment was starkly illustrated in March after a Palestinian youth orchestra performed for Israeli Holocaust survivors, only to be shut down by angry leaders of the West Bank refugee camp where they live.

"The Holocaust happened, but we are facing a similar massacre by the Jews themselves," a community leader named Adnan Hindi said at the time. "We lost our land and we were forced to flee."

Like other moderate Arab leaders, King Mohammed VI must tread carefully. Islamic fervor is rising in his kingdom, highlighted in 2003 by al-Qaida-inspired attacks in Casablanca on targets that included Jewish sites. Forty-five people died.

The king's acknowledgment of the Holocaust, in a speech read out in his name at a ceremony in Paris in March, appears to further illustrate the radically different paths that countries like Morocco and Iran are taking.

Morocco has long been a quiet pioneer in Arab-Israeli peace efforts, most notably when it served as a secret meeting place for the Israeli and Egyptian officials who set up President Anwar Sadat's groundbreaking journey to Jerusalem in 1977.

Though Moroccan officials say the timing is coincidental, the Holocaust speech came at around the same time that Morocco severed diplomatic relations with Iran, claiming it was infiltrating Shiite Muslim troublemakers into this Sunni nation.

The speech was read out at a ceremony launching the "Aladdin Project," an initiative of the Paris-based Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah (Holocaust) which aims to spread awareness of the genocide among Muslims.

It organizes conferences and has translated key Holocaust writing such as Anne Frank's diary into Arabic and Farsi. The name refers to Aladdin, the young man with the genie in his lamp, whose legend, originally Muslim, became a universally loved tale.

The Holocaust, the king's speech said, is "the universal heritage of mankind."

It was "a very important political act," said Anne-Marie Revcolevschi, director of the Shoah foundation. "This is the first time an Arab head of state takes such a clear stand on the Shoah," she said in a telephone interview.

While the Israeli-Palestinian conflict often aggravates Arab sentiment toward Israel, Morocco has a long history of coexistence between Muslims and Jews.

The recent Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip has further inflamed resentment at Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. But Ahmed Hasseni, a Casablanca cab driver, echoes a widely held view that it shouldn't affect relations with Morocco's Jews.

"We're not dumb," he said. "We don't confuse the Israeli army with the Jewish people," he said.

Jews have lived in Morocco for 2,000 years. Their numbers swelled after they were expelled from Spain in 1492, and reached 300,000 before World War II, when yet more fled the German occupation and found refuge in Morocco, then a French colony.

Today they number just 3,000, most having emigrated to France, North America or Israel, but they are free to come back to explore their roots, pray at their ancestors' graves and even settle here.

Simon Levy heads the Jewish Museum in Casablanca, a treasure trove of old Torah scrolls, garments and jewelry illustrating the rich culture of Moroccan Jewry.

"That I still run the only Jewish museum in the Arab world is telling," he said.

Andre Azoulay, a top adviser to the current king, is Jewish and one of six members of the king's council in a monarchy that oversees all major decisions. Considered one of Morocco's most powerful men, he views his country as "a unique case" for the intensity of its Jewish-Muslim relations. "We don't mix up Judaism and the tragedy of the Middle East," he told The Associated Press in an interview.

A founding member of the Aladdin project, Azoulay says part of the program's goal is to show the West that Muslims aren't hostile to Jews, and that Morocco was among countries that resisted Nazi plans to exterminate their Jewish populations. He points to king Mohammed V, the current ruler's grandfather, who is credited with resisting French colonial anti-Semitic policies.

Such actions were rare, but not unique in North Africa during World War II. In Tunisia, the late Khaled Abdelwahhab hid Jews from the Nazis on his farm, and was the first Arab to be nominated as "Righteous Among the Nations," a title bestowed by Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial, on those who risked their lives to save Jews in the Holocaust. His case is still under study.

The Aladdin project is only just beginning. Its work has yet to reach schools or bookstores in Morocco, although the Shoah foundation's Revcolevschi said Anne Frank's diary is among Holocaust memoirs available in Arabic and Farsi on the Internet, and is being sold under the counter in Iran.

"People speak of a clash of civilizations, but it's more a clash of ignorance," she said. "We're countering this."

Hakim El Ghissassi, an aide to the senior Islamic Affairs official who delivered Mohammed's speech, said the king is uniquely positioned to promote Islam's dialogue with Judaism, because his titles include "Commander of the believers" — meaning he is the paramount authority for Moroccan Muslims.

"What the king has said on the Holocaust reflects our broader efforts," said El Ghissassi, listing such reforms as courses to reinforce Morocco's tradition of tolerant Islam by familiarizing local imams with Jewish and Christian holy books.

"We want to make sure everybody can differentiate between unfair Israeli policies and respect for Judaism," he said.

Re: [chottala.com] Why push the Biharis onto Bangladesh?

    Mr Dowllah
On religion basis division of Bengal & India was totally against the democracy.
The reality is that the theory of 2 nations was a conspiracy against the democracy & against the humanity & human right. This conspiracy was done not only by Urdu Speaker Mr. Jinna but also it is done in cooperation of Hindi Speaker Mr. Neheru.
It seems that Mr. Neheru might think if India not be divided then India might got before position of 1757 or fighting would start for state language of India between languages Urdu & Hindi or state Language of India would be majority people of Bangla
Among then Muslims Politicians in the undivided Bengal except Mr. AKF Haque understood this conspiracy later Mr. Shahid Sarwardi could but other Muslims Bengal politicians including the father of now Independence Bangladesh could not be able to understand this conspiracy.
    However
Now we need to confirm that East Pakistan is created on 2 nation theories which is the foundation of Bangladesh & all citizens of East Pakistan are the citizens of Bangladesh only the war criminals are needed to face trial for establishing social justice & lawful Administration in Bangladesh

    Attention dina khan,

We came to know from the history there were so many scientific thesis written in Urdu. There is no question of revengeful attitude in my writing. In spite of their activities in 1971 still few lacs of Biharis staying there for the last 39 years in the middle of full of Bengali people without any untoward incidents or revengeful activities. Bengali people initially did not have any conflict with the Biharis. The conflict of Bangalee Bihari started in 1971 when Biharis instead of taking side with the Bengalis with whom they used to stay for 25 years they accepted Pakistanis as their friends and  initiated all sorts of atrocities against Bengalis by taking active parts along with their Pakistani associates.

I don't know why I am unable to clear that the creation of Pakistan was on the basis of religion only, not on language.

Before 1947 many iron men from our Bengal joined hand in hand with M.A. Jinnah and took active part in the creation of Pakistan on the agreement to create a separate home land for the Muslims in India. According to that they tried and were successful in creating Pakistan as a separate land for the Muslims.

There was no agreement and no mention anywhere, the creation of Pakistan for Urdu only when there was movement for the creation of Pakistan going on. Why possessing this wrong idea, India was divided into two - Pakistan for Urdu language and India for Hindi language.

It was only due to M.A. Jinnah who later on without giving any value to our Bengali language took the opportunity of our sincerity to enforce most unwanted Urdu language on our shoulder and by telling Urdu and Urdu only will be the state language of Pakistan, igniting the volcano producing an eruption creating a big explosion of our language movement which results ultimately the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. How they thought our Bengali people would accept their foolish dictatorial proposal.

From our Bangladesh side there was no objection if West Pakistani people accept Urdu as their state language but in our the then East Pakistan how they thought and were dared enough to force Urdu language over  us and subsequently objecting our own Bengali language in our own Bengal? Was it possible where the majority of us as son of the soil used to speak in Bengali by being born and brought up with our own ancestral Bengali language? How it was possible we would start again everything by accepting Urdu from the beginning as our new language? Sorry to say it was not possble.

Bengali people never objected for the Biharis who entered in our small Bangladesh to speak in their own Urdu language nor bothered for it. The problem started when M.A. Jinnah tried to enforce the Urdu over our  Bengal to accept it as state language. Really very strange to think even.

We can sacrifice our small land of Bangladesh to share with those large influx of Biharis as they were our same Muslim community but in concern of language no compromise, as that was the language of our heart.

That was the only reason by attacking our Bengali language these Biharis lost their all stronghold of their foot step in Bangladesh and have nowhere, got no place moving from one place to another as vagabond refugees.

Biharis who supported and favoured Pakistan against us during our liberation war in 1971 after repeated claim by them for the last 39 years as they are Pakistani, Pakistan refused to accept them. On the other hand it is not possible for our Bangladesh to be converted again into Pakistan as it is already finished now.

The question is now why to push those "Urdu Wala Biharis" onto Bangladesh as their most intimate "Mouch Wala Khan of Pakistan" refused to accept them?  After staying for 25 years, Pakistan could not be a good friend of Bengalis how the Biharis thought those Pakistanis will be a good friend of them. What more we can do for them now? There is no other alternative except feeling pity for those poor Biharis.

    Dowllah.

    Mr. Dowllah
    You are talking for revenging
I am asking for lawful administration based on justice of law for humanity & human right.
It is very clear though Pakistan was created based on the theory of 2 nations the cause is religion
But historical causes of division were behind that reasons are still for continuing the problems in the subcontinent
Though Mr. Jinnah was blamed he was the responsible person for division of India logically it could not be said only Mr. Jinnah was responsible.
He was the initial member of Congress later he joined to ML.
On analyzing it is clear that the historical backgrounds divisions of India are the main causes. Once on train travel Calcuta to Delhi I heard people in train gossiped that Urdu is language of Muslim & Hindi for Hindu.
So it is looked India has no language problem all other local languages people have taken Hindi their national language & Harmony of Geo Political cultural is there..
Though for Bengali language Bangladesh is liberated still in Bangladesh Bengali language is used only in domestic in drama in cinema & in political talking for illiterate people.
It can not be used for earning medical knowledge or engineering knowledge or technical knowledge or official & administrative knowledge even it is not used for prestigious talking & in religion prayer.

It is the Language limited in Rabindra & Nazrul Sangith now in Natak of Homayan Ahmed & fun of Naslima Nasrin.
No authority still is thinking or taking perfect action for making it a media of knowledge earning language. People think wasting of time for using this language.
    However
Bangladesh Administration is needed to think how can be established lawful Administration & social justice for humanity & human right

     ..............................................................................
Hijab, or a head-covering by Muslim women, is worn for the sake of religious modesty.
And if this is indeed America, then shouldn't one have the freedom to dress

CAIR APPLAUDS DECISION TO ALLOW HIJAB IN GEORGIA COURTS - TOP
Muslim civil rights group had challenged ban on religious attire in courtrooms

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/24/09) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today applauded a decision by the Judicial Council of Georgia to allow religious attire such as Islamic headscarves, or hijab, in that state's courtrooms.

SEE: Muslim Headscarves to be Allowed in Georgia Courtrooms (Atlanta Journal)

In a press release issued today, the Judicial Council of Georgia said in part:

"The measure stems from the December 2008 arrest of Lisa Valentine after she refused to remove her hijab, the head scarf worn by Muslim women. She said to do so would violate her faith. But Judge Keith Rollins of the Douglasville Municipal Court found her in contempt of court and ordered her to serve 10 days in jail.

"The incident prompted a formal complaint from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Anti-Defamation League, Council on American-Islamic Relations and American Civil Liberties Union also lodged complaints.

SEE: Muslim's Scarf Leads to Arrest at Courthouse (Atlanta Journal)

    The new policy states:

"'Head coverings are prohibited from the courtroom except in cases where the covering is worn for medical or religious reasons. To the extent security requires a search of a person wearing a head covering for medical or religious reasons, the individual has the option of having the inspection performed by a same-sex officer in a private area. The individual is allowed to put his or her own head covering back on after the inspection is complete.'"

"We applaud the decision of the Judicial Council of Georgia to uphold freedom of religion and unencumbered access to the legal system for Georgians of all faiths," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "This decision once again demonstrates that America is a diverse and inclusive nation."

Hooper said CAIR recently expressed concerns about a proposed Oregon law that would reinforce an existing ban on religious attire for teachers in that state.

CAIR-CHICAGO WINS BIAS SUIT FOR ARAB-AMERICAN OFFICER - TOP
Jury awards correctional officer $200K for racial harassment at the workplace

(CHICAGO, IL, 7/24/09) - The Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) today announced a verdict in favor of an Arab-American correctional officer in a discrimination case litigated pro bono against the Cook County Sheriff's Department by CAIR-Chicago Staff Attorney Kevin Vodak.

The verdict awarded Officer Abraham Yasin $200,000 in damages for harassment found to be pervasive or severe enough to create a hostile and abusive work environment.

CAIR-Chicago began litigation on behalf of Officer Abraham Yasin in 2007 after he reported experiencing harassment by other correctional officers starting in December 2004. Cook County officers continuously and anonymously targeted Yasin with racist slurs such as "terrorist,""Hussein," "sand ni**er," "bin Laden," "shoe bomber," and "camel jockey" verbally and via graffiti on his locker. Yasin testified that his co-workers made calls over the radio and telephone about his ancestry and national origin as many as ten times a day and countless times for over a one-year period.

SEE: Cook County Deputy Testifies that He Felt 'Demonized' by Racial Harassment (Chicago Tribune)

Despite repeatedly reporting the incidents, multiple supervisors and the Internal Affairs Division failed to take adequate corrective action.

In a statement today Officer Yasin said, "After having agonized for so long, I can finally feel a sense of relief and vindication. I served my country in uniform with dignity and honor and felt betrayed that my service would be met by some of my fellows with racial slurs, harassment, and ridicule. This is not what our country is about. Today's victory is not only for me, but for justice, fair play, and equality regardless of race, gender, or creed."

"This was an unprecedented decision by jury trial in the state of Illinois," said CAIR-Chicago Staff Attorney Kevin Vodak. "The case stands as a legal precedent and a symbol of hope for Arab-Americans to expect to be free of harassment in their workplace. The jury sent a clear message that no one is above the law in this matter, including the Cook County Sheriff."

Chicago attorney Jim Fennerty was co-counsel on the case. Cook County is the second most populous county in the United States after Los Angeles County.

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

CAIR-OH: ARE MUSLIM'S BEING TARGETED AT DAYTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT? - TOP

Click here to watch the video.

Are Muslim's being targeted at Dayton International Airport? That's the question that launched recent investigation.

On Wednesday a Muslim woman by the name of Constance told Dayton's News Source, during a lay over back in June she was humiliated by Airport Transportation security Administration Officers.

Constance was on a lay over and had wondered outside the security check point, but when she came through the screening TSA workers told her they needed to check under her long dress and headscarf.

According to Constance she set off no alarms and was told repeatedly it's because she's Muslim. (More)

CAIR-NY: CLOSING SCHOOLS FOR TWO MUSLIM HOLIDAYS? - TOP
    Willow Belden, Queens Chronicle, 7/23/09

The City Council overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling on the Department of Education to incorporate two major Muslim holidays into the city school calendar.

The resolution, which passed 50 to 1, bears no legal weight; it is simply a formal request that the DOE schedule school holidays for Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, which commemorates Ibrahim's sacrifice of his son Ishmael.

More than 800,000 Muslims live in the city, and at least 10 percent of the city's school students are followers of Islam.

"This is an opportunity for the city to uphold American ideals of inclusion and diversity," said Faiza Ali, community affairs director of the NY branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and a steering committee member of the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays. "The Coalition urges Mayor Bloomberg to ensure that a significant population of Muslim students does not have to make an unfair choice between religious observance and educational opportunities." CAIR-SEATTLE: BUDGET SHORTFALL, LAND USE AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED AT CANDIDATE FORUM - TOP
Mary Stevens Decker, Redmond Reporter, 7/20/09

The Greater Seattle Muslim Community hosted a forum with the King County Executive candidates, July 19 at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, with the county's budget shortfall, integrating diversity and land-use issues being the hot-button topics.

Present were former KIRO news anchor Susan Hutchison, Sen. Fred Jarrett, State Rep. Ross Hunter, King County Council Chairman Dow Constantine, engineer and businessman Alan Lobdell, former accountant and amateur astronomer Mike Goodspaceguy and Stan Lippmann, whose background is in alternative energy research and law. Another candidate, King County Councilmember Larry Phillips did not attend.

Guests at the forum represented such organizations as The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) of Washington, Muslim Students Association Northwest (MSAnw), Islamic Circle of North America, Muslim Association of Puget Sound and Alsadaqa.

The forum's moderator, Amro Youssef, said the goal was to help attendees get to know the candidates and for the candidates to learn of their concerns, especially to challenge anti-Muslim bigotry.

Candidates were asked about how to fill a $46 million hole in the county's general fund, transparency in government, whether brown bag lunch meetings might educate county employees about diversity and how to simplify permitting for the construction of churches, mosques, synagogues or temples. CAIR: TUR-BAN - TOP
    Frederick News Post editorial, 7/22/09

In general, school districts and the courts have tended to rule against expressions of religion in public schools, even to the extent of barring a brief mention of faith from a high school valedictorian's speech.

Sunday's edition of The Washington Post carried a story on this theme, this one from the Pacific Northwest. Oregon has just passed a law called the Workplace Religious Freedom Act, now awaiting the governor's signature. Essentially, it requires all employers to allow their workers to wear religious items -- a victory for religious expression in everyday life.

The one exception to Oregon's new law involves its public schools. On that subject, the new law reads: "No teacher in any public school shall wear any religious dress while engaged in the performance of duties as a teacher."

The problem is that this law sets up a classic confrontation between two clauses in the First Amendment. The Establishment clause forbids the state from favoring or disfavoring one religion over another, but the Free Exercise clause instructs government to let religious folks do their thing.

Predictably, the Oregon school exception is already under fire from several quarters. Muslims and Sikhs are among those who object. One group, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, says: "In effect, observant Sikh Americans would still be barred from working as teachers in the public schools of Oregon because of their religiously mandated dastaars (turbans), and observant Jews and Muslims would also be subjected to the ignominy of having to choose between religious freedom and a teaching career in the state of Oregon." …

Not really, counters spokesman Ibrahim Hooper of the Council on American-Islamic Relations: "Those who wear religiously mandated attire are not proselytizing; they are practicing their faith, a right guaranteed by the Constitution. Concerns about religious neutrality in schools can be adequately addressed through professional codes of conduct." Hooper's position on this is sound and rational. (More)

CAIR-MN: WHY WOULD A MANAGER FORBID PRAYER DURING A WORK BREAK? - TOP
    Kurt Greenbaum, St. Louis Post-Dispatch,
    7/22/09

It seems that a dispute with a St. Paul Wal-Mart has ended happily for an employee who was fired for praying during work breaks. Abdi Abdi has been rehired and Wal-Mart is running diversity training for about 10 of its store's employees.

Abdi, a four-year employee at the store, had been praying during his work breaks. That was fine by a previous supervisor, who had no problem with that use of time during breaks. A new supervisor came in and issued an edict banning prayer on breaks — a violation of federal law, as long as accommodating the prayer doesn't cause "undue hardship."

Abdi was fired. After the Council on American-Islamic Relations intervened, the store reversed course and rehired the worker. According to a story by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Michelle Bradford said that "respect for the individual is one of our company's core values, and we practice it every day in our stores and clubs. CAIR:
U.S. MUSLIMS DECRY CLOSED TRIAL FOR AMERICAN HELD IN U.A.E. - TOP

(LOS ANGELES, CA, 7/23/09) The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today expressed deep concern over the lack of openness in the trial of U.S. citizen Naji Hamdan in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.).

Hamdan, 43, was put on trial this week after having been detained for almost a year. Judge Shahab al-Hamadi closed the trial to the public without giving any reasons, according to news reports.

SEE: Emirates closes terror trial of U.S. citizen (AP)
ALSO SEE: American Held in U.A.E.: "Proxy Detention"?

The judge's decision, a clear affront to international judicial norms, is the latest challenge hampering efforts to bring justice to Hamdan, whose detention since August 2008 has been marred by reports of torture, lack of due process and involvement of one or more U.S. government agencies.

Hamdan lived in Southern California for more than two decades, where he has been a well-respected community leader. He is a father of three children. In a sworn statement to a U.S. consular official in U.A.E., he said he was kicked, made to sit in an electric chair with threats that he might be electrocuted, punched and slapped, blindfolded, and beaten with a large stick and subsequently forced to sign false statements statements that will likely be submitted as evidence in his closed trial.

Additionally, according to his attorneys, six weeks before Hamdan's arrest by U.A.E. security forces, he was questioned by FBI agents at a U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi. He was also previously questioned and monitored by the FBI while in the U.S. However, no charges were ever filed against him in America.

In April, CAIR-LA along with seven other advocacy, religious and interfaith groups, sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urging her to intervene and investigate immediately allegations of torture, lack of due process and involvement of any government agencies.

    SEE: Link to Clinton Letter

"We are appalled by the continued disregard for due process of an American detained and reportedly tortured abroad, coupled with our government's seeming inaction to protect one of its own citizens," said CAIR-LA Staff Attorney Ameena Qazi. "Such inhumane treatment flies in the face of President Obama's message of respect for all Americans and building positive relations with the Muslim world."

IL: MUSLIMS HOPE FOR NEW ERA OF UNDERSTANDING - TOP
    Steven Spearie, State Journal-Register, 7/24/09

It was an early morning for Driss El Akrich. But armed with Moroccan green tea and joined by his wife, Amina, in front of a television set, it was a moment he had been eagerly anticipating.

President Barack Obama was in Cairo last month, giving a major speech to the Muslim world. The speech reverberated across the world to Springfield, home to about 300 Muslim families from 28 countries.

For El Akrich, a doctoral candidate in the public administration program at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Obama hit all the right notes: Speaking in a tone of respect; quoting the Quran, the Torah and the Bible; and even mentioning El Akrich's native Morocco as the first country, in 1777, to publicly acknowledge the newly sovereign United States.

El Akrich, who came to the United States in 2002 as part of the Fulbright exchange program, says it's an emerging moment for Springfield Muslims whose efforts are boosted by Obama.

"It was a change in paradigm," El Akrich says one evening in the fellowship hall of the Islamic Center of Greater Springfield's masjid, or mosque, on Stanton Avenue. "Rather than focusing on tension, (Obama) has shifted the focus on common interests and mutual respect."

Local Muslims say stereotypes against them still persist: disdainful looks, sneering comments and water-cooler jokes. But they also note progress is being made as people of different faiths learn more about what Muslims believe, and as Muslims themselves get more involved in the community. (More)
