[chottala.com] Time is running out for Israel

Time is running out
18/05/2008 11:35:00 AM GMT

(Reuters) America and Israel have locked themselves into a Catholic marriage

America and Israel have locked themselves into a Catholic marriage, they can have a spat, sometimes they do not talk for weeks but somehow, they always stay together.

By Gilad Atzmon

Something positive is happening, I would even call it a shift of awareness, a realisation that the Palestinian struggle is leading somewhere after all.

This week, at Exeter University, to a very crowded theatre, in an event of that was a commemoration of 60 years of the Nakba, I had a chance to listen to Dr Manuel Hassassian, the Palestinian Ambassador to Britain. I may as well say it, Palestinian eloquence cheers me up and fills me with hope and pride and Dr Hassassian has plenty of it.

These days it is rather rare to hear or see a PLO spokesman who lets his fierceness and rage be seen. The Ambassador was angry, he was furious, yet, at the same time, astonishingly measured and considered.

"Enough is enough", was his message. He admitted that twenty years of negotiation with the Israelis led his people nowhere. America is not a true honest negotiator and this may not change in the near future. America and Israel have locked themselves into a Catholic marriage, they can have a spat, sometimes they do not talk for weeks but somehow, they always stay together.

"We the Palestinians," said the Ambassador, "tried our very best to secure a peace deal. In 2002, the Arab League offered a peace imitative, this didn't lead anywhere either. All we hear about is the Israelis seeking security."

As pathetic as it does sound, he had to bring to our attention the absurdity of the fact that the state with the world's 4th largest army is seeking security from occupied Palestine!

The crowd burst into laughter. Apparently the Israelis think they are close to exhausting the patience of the Palestinians, suggested the Ambassador. However, in his view, they are really miscalculating the balance of power. The future belongs to the Palestinian people.

"True, they, the Israelis, have a 'nuclear bomb', but we," said the Ambassador, "have a 'demographic bomb'." Again, the audience cracked into laughter and believe me, there is nothing more cheerful than seeing a big theatre crowded with Palestinian solidarity activists having a laugh at the expense of almighty Israel.

In less than 12 years the Palestinians are going to be the majority on the ground. If the Israelis believe that 22 Arab states and billions of Muslims will let them get away with their daily atrocities, they are really fooling themselves.

Though the Ambassador didn't say it, the message was clear. As far as the Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims are concerned, the window of opportunity is closing down. The doomed fate of the Jewish state is written on the wall. You have to be blind not to see it. In Exeter University Theatre everyone could see it. Needless to say, Rabin, Peres, Sharon and Olmert have read it as well. Apparently, the looming reality has been far stronger than their political power.

In Exeter I saw a room full of students of very many nationalities including of course very many young Palestinians and Arab students. Many British people of all ages were present, including the very supportive community of the local PSC branch.

The Exeter Friends of Palestine may have got the recipes right. They have combined an academic and intellectual discussion with a cultural event and a culinary break. After three talks, one given by a PhD student Aida Es-Said, one by Dr Manuel Hassassian and the third by myself, the audience was invited to attend a concert featuring Nizar Al Issa, Mohammed Diab, a local folk dance group and my own Orient House Ensemble.

On the way to the concert the entire crowd was introduced to the best of Palestine cuisine: Humus, Tabuleh, Falafel, Grape leaves and so on.

There wasn't even a hint of the old anachronistic dogmatic leftist clichés. No one insisted upon telling us what we should talk about. No one mentioned 'anti-semitism'. It wasn't at all about Jews and their suffering, but rather about Palestine and the ongoing genocide committed by the Jewish state.

The event was all about Palestinians who stood up and say: this is who we are, this is our Nakba, this is what we think, here is what we eat, this is what we listen to and this is how it looks when we break into dancing.

If you like what you see, hear or eat, then Salam Alekum.

If you don't, no worries, don't waste your time, just move on, go somewhere else.

[chottala.com] Stranded Biharis now Bangladesh citizens HC declares

Staff Correspondent

The High Court (HC) yesterday ruled that around three lakh Biharis living in different parts of the country are citizens of Bangladesh.

Responding to a writ petition filed by 11 Urdu-speaking people, an HC bench comprising Justices Mohammad Abdur Rashid and Ashfaqul Islam also directed the Election Commission (EC) to include the petitioners' names in the voter list.

Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, who moved for the petitioners, said the judgment would put an end to the Bangladesh-born Urdu-speaking people being deprived of citizens' rights.

On November 26 last year, 11 members of the Stranded Pakistanis Youth Rehabilitation Movement including its president Sadakat Khan filed the writ petition seeking HC orders to register as voters the three lakh Urdu-speaking people living in 116 camps across the capital and elsewhere.

In response, the HC issued a rule asking the EC and the government officials to explain within two weeks why the Urdu-speaking people should not be registered as voters.

Yesterday's ruling came after three days' of hearing on the HC rule.

Assistant Attorney General (AAG) Manzur Hossain appeared for the government.

According to a publication of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit of Dhaka University, these Biharis first moved to Pakistan from India in 1947. Then 74,000 of them migrated to the former East Pakistan and the migration continued up to 1952.

Around 4.26 lakh Biharis left Bangladesh during and after the Liberation War in 1971 while around 4 lakh opted to stay on. Following an agreement in 1974, Pakistan took back over 1 lakh of them. The number of Biharis repatriated so far stands at 1.61 lakh.

Later, Pakistan stopped accepting applications from those willing to return and terminated the repatriation process.

[chottala.com] Reading the Israeli mindset

Reading the Israeli mindset

Reviewed By Ali M. Siddiqi

The books under review give the reader an insight into the mindset of both the Israeli establishment and the citizenry. Jonathan Cook, relying entirety on Israeli and other authentic sources, succeeds in 'the unmasking of the Jewish and democratic state', which is the subtitle of his book.

As the book explains, the pioneers of the Zionist movement, founded towards the end of the 19th century, made it clear from day one that the original inhabitants of Palestine would have no place in their scheme. The founders of Israel, which was established in 1948, did exactly what was expected of them. By means of forcible eviction, the Irgun and Hagana gangs and later the Israeli Defence Force created conditions that forced Arabs to flee to safer havens in neighbouring countries. An estimated 700,000 Palestinians fled their homes.

The Law of Return, enacted in 1950, states that a Jew living anywhere in the world has the right to 'return' to Israel and acquire citizenship. However this privilege is not available to the Arabs evicted in 1948 and after. Israel is still without a written constitution, and the basic laws mostly favour Jewish citizens, with no mention of Arabs residing in Israel. The non-Jews are further divided into Arabs, Druze and Bedouins in spite of the similarities in their religion, language and culture.

Discriminatory laws are in vogue to deny the non-Jews full citizenship rights. Preference is given to Jewish traditions in every sphere of life like holidays, calendar, religious matters and even norms of hygiene. Conversion to Judaism is discouraged to maintain purity of the Jewish creed. Inter-faith marriages are shunned, thereby causing immense suffering to the citizens doing so.

Even prior to the six-day 1967 war, Arab citizens were considered a fifth column. After that, events took a turn for the worse. Matters further deteriorated after the second Intifada began; Arabs came to be seen as an even greater security risk. Thus their movement for greater rights and against forcible eviction from their lands was equated with suicide bombing by the Israeli establishment. Protests were now to be responded to not according to the level of violence but as a strategy determined beforehand.

Owing to a higher Arab birth rate, the demographic factor has also come into play. This has led to a rejection of the very concept of one person one vote. Israelis have accepted the two-state plan grudgingly, but if and when a Palestinian state comes into being it will be a conglomerate of ghettoes and Bantustans behind security walls and barriers. Yet in spite of this Israel is considered a western-style democracy, in the words of Noam Chomsky, 'such general acclaim is matched only by the no less general ignorance of the facts.'

It is only after the instituting of Holocaust memorialisation in the US and Europe that Yom Ha Shooh (Holocaust Memorial Day) began to be observed in Israel. 'Thou shalt not remember' became 'Thou shalt not forget'

As for Arthur Neslen's Occupied Minds, it unearths the Israeli psyche comprehensively. This he does through interviewing a broad spectrum of Israeli people through direct tête-à-tête with immigrants, settlers in occupied territories, human rights activists and retired army and security personnel.

The founding fathers of Israel wanted it to be a Kurhitukh (melting pot) for the Diaspora and world Jewry; 60 years down the road the ideal is open to question. The Mizralim (Middle Eastern Jews) and Falashmura (Ethiopian Jews) and even immigrants from the former USSR complain of maltreatment by the dominant Ashkenazim (East European Jews). Those from the former USSR especially feel that they were better off in the land they left, having a higher standard of living. Besides, they also resent religiosity prevalent in Israel as they were groomed otherwise.Although the hatred for Arabs permeates all sections of Israeli society, some Israelis complained about the state being too preoccupied with security concerns rather than with the welfare of its citizen. Besides, there do exist sane voices abhorring violence even against adversaries-in-faith. One such voice is Don Yarmiya's, an IDF officer expelled for exposing atrocities committed in 1982 in Lebanon. In his own words 'The oppressed often become the worst oppressors if conditions allow'. He said, 'In Israel they [Arabs] are underdogs and we treat them as dogs'.

Only Hebrew is encouraged, while other languages such as Arabic, Yiddish, and various Slav languages are discouraged, although a significant number of Israelis speak them. History is distorted to such an extent that school-going Arab children are not aware that their forefathers, and even fathers, were turned into refugees in 1948.

Initially, Zionism was a secular movement. Its founders were greatly influenced by Europe's liberal and progressive strains. In 1948, at the behest of the Jewish Agency, David Ben-Gurion 'tamed' a section of the religions lobby and converted them to Zionism. Many orthodox Jews remain opposed to the creation and existence of the state Israel to this day. Post-1967, the change of heart on the part of the religious right became more evident and more assertive to the detriment of non-Jewish people living in Israel.

Some interesting information which was available through these interviews is revealing: 'Amputees of Soul', as the author calls the survivors of ethnic violence, have been on the rise, especially after the second Intifada. Due to an increase in the cases of post-traumatic disorder, use of drugs amongst citizens has led to Israel being the biggest producer and dealer of the drug Ecstasy.

It is only after the instituting of Holocaust memorialisation in the US and Europe that Yom Ha Shooh (Holocaust Memorial Day) began to be observed in Israel. 'Thou shalt not remember' became 'Thou shalt not forget', as the writer points out.

Although an end to the sufferings of both Jews and Arabs, as a result of violence, does not appear to be in sight, this might in itself become a rallying point for both of them to make their respective leaderships seek peace with each other.

[chottala.com] Re:Thanks Fakhruddin - you have made us laugh by your sermon

Attention intellect Ayubi and Faruq Alamgir

Just give the young a generation a chance - here is an example

Government should make the elected positions attractive to the young generation. Make this positions professional, i.e. an elected mayor or a chairman of a union parishad or an MP should earn more money than those of their peers who, for example, plays professional cricket or professional football or working 8-hours a day job. After all, these positions are supposed to be a 24-hour jobs if they are really willing to serve. Doesn't it make sense to make the most important jobs in the country to be professional, instead of the current part-time nature of these positions (if you are not sure whether the elected officials jobs are professional or not, read closely the job-description and their salary structure). We hope to share more thoughts on this on another day. Lets see an encouraging example today.

There might be many reason to dislike USA, the people of this nation has made many choices for which you could call them dumb (e.g. electing Bush as president), however, they often do some things very good. Thats the reason they are still what they are today.

Here is a latest example. A small city in Oklahama state in USA has elected a 19-year old first year university student as their mayor!

Also, don't be surprised if Barack Obama becomes the next US president to replace the joker (to put it mildly).

If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please forward it to others. If you have an ear to the columinsts in regular traditional media, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.

19 year old elected mayor of US city

WASHINGTON (AFP) — It's certainly a good start: a 19-year-old political science student who dreams of becoming US president was elected mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, beating a 70-year-old for the job, the city hall announced Thursday.

John Tyler Hammons, a first-year student at the University of Oklahoma, won the job to lead the city of 40,000 with 70 percent of the vote over a former mayor. The incumbent did not take part in the race.

"The campaign was great, it was fun and we won the trust of the people," Hammons told AFP.

"I want an open government. I don't have the monopoly on good ideas," he said.

For Hammons, who will take office Monday for a two-year term, it is only the beginning of a political career.

"I would like to be governor of Oklahoma and president of the United States," he said.

U. of Okla. freshman, 19, elected mayor of Muskogee

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — A 19-year-old freshman at the University of Oklahoma was elected mayor Tuesday of Muskogee, a city of 38,000 in the northeastern part of the state.

With all precincts reporting, John Tyler Hammons won with 70 percent of the vote over former Mayor Hershel Ray McBride, said Muskogee County Election Board Secretary Bill Bull.

"The public placing their trust in me is the greatest, humbling and most awesome experience I've ever had in my life," said Hammons, who is from Muskogee but attends the university in Norman.

The two candidates squared off in a runoff election for the nonpartisan post after neither secured 50 percent of the vote in a six-person election April 1.

Hammons, who will be sworn in next week, said he plans to continue his college education but expects to transfer to a school closer to Muskogee.

"Being elected does not change my desire to continue my education," he said. "We will schedule our time in an appropriate fashion so that I can be mayor and stay in school."

Hammons replaces Wren Stratton, who decided not to seek re-election after one term.

The mayor leads the nine-member city council and serves as a voting member. Hammons said a key to his platform that resonated with voters was openness of government and keeping citizens better informed of city operations.

"I think that's been a detriment to the trust of the citizens of Muskogee," he said. "Once we have that trust, we can solve any other problem."

Oklahoma Town Elects Teen As New Mayor

May 14, 2008 10:03 p.m. EST

Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer

Muskogee, OK (AHN) - A 19-year-old freshman from the University of Oklahoma became this city's youngest mayor after winning the mayoral election on Tuesday.

John Tyler Hammons, who is majoring in political science and public administration, beat three-time former mayor Hershel McBride, 70, by garnering 3,703 votes over his rival's 1,616 votes based on unofficial results.

McBride conceded defeat at 8:10 p.m. and told Hammons over the phone that he would support the new mayor.

The losing candidate attributed the student's win to a nationwide trend for change.

Hammons takes over the post left by Wren Stratton, who did not seek another term as mayor.

Muskogee, Okla., teen ready for mayoral challenge

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — Nineteen-year-old John Tyler Hammons has a lot on his plate as he prepares to take over as mayor of this eastern Oklahoma city, but he's trying to keep his priorities straight.

Juggling calls from people around the country Thursday, he took an important one from his mother. She wanted to know what time he would be home for dinner.

The University of Oklahoma freshman is moving out of a dorm and back in with his parents as he gets ready to be sworn in next week as mayor of this 38,000-person city made famous by the Merle Haggard song "Okie From Muskogee."

Eventually, he plans to rent an apartment or house with a friend and transfer to Northeastern State University, which has a local branch campus.

Hammons wants to hit the ground running as mayor, but there has been no shortage of distractions since he won Tuesday's runoff election with nearly 70 percent of the vote over Hershel McBride, 70, a former three-term mayor. He replaces Wren Stratton, who decided not to seek re-election.

Besides numerous interview requests, Hammons has received a proposal for a book deal, invitations to appear on national talk shows and three offers for a reality television program.

As mayor, his first priorities are the creation of an independent ethics commission to monitor elected and appointed city officials. He also wants to establish campaign finance reporting requirements for those running for office.

"I'm sure the (city) council will work with me on these issues," he said. "I campaigned on this, and this is something I intend to push.

"First and foremost, Muskogee is my one and only interest right now," Hammons said from his office inside the city's municipal building.

The senior class president at Muskogee High School in 2007, he served as president of both the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats clubs.

"I threw my name in both rings ... and lo and behold, both groups elected me," he said.

Hammons, a registered Republican, is Oklahoma's youngest at-large delegate to the Republican National Convention. But when it comes to serving as mayor of Muskogee, an unpaid position, he plans to govern in a nonpartisan way.

"Politics stop at the door," Hammons said. "If someone wants to talk politics, I will literally leave the office and leave the building if I have to. In this office, it needs to be Muskogee-oriented."

Residents appear willing to give the young mayor a chance.

At the Club Lunch cafe in downtown Muskogee, owner Gary Armstrong said locals have grown weary of politics as usual at City Hall.

"He doesn't have the baggage. He doesn't owe anybody anything," Armstrong said as he served up a plate of roast beef and mashed potatoes. "It's sort of a fresh start for Muskogee."

While Hammons says his focus now is on the city, he isn't ruling out seeking higher office in the future.

"I've always had it in the back of my mind to be governor of Oklahoma one day," he said. "That's always been a dream of mine. If I am lucky enough to be governor, I'll probably flirt with the idea of trying to become president."

His ambition doesn't stop him from enjoying the typical diversions of a 19-year-old: video games, movies, fast cars and rock 'n' roll.

As for dating, the skinny, baby-faced Hammons said he's waiting to see what kind of offers come his way.

"Right now I'm between girlfriends," he said, "so I'm looking to fill that position."

19-Year-Old Oklahoma Freshman Elected Mayor of Muskogee

hammons

Today at Newsroom seems to be all about beating the odds. We kicked it all off with Steve Novick, then we introduced you to Bonnie Richardson, and now…a college freshman who's just been elected mayor.

What?? How the heck is that possible? Well, seems totally do-able to the residents of, uh, Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Looks like the city has elected 19-year-old University of Oklahoma freshman John Tyler Hammons as mayor. For real. And save your Muskogee jokes: with a population of 38,000, running the city is no small job.

So how'd Hammons win? According to AP, "a key to his platform that resonated with voters was openness of government and keeping citizens better informed of city operations." Yeah, they don't seem to know either. We do, however, know some of the winning campaign slogans: "New Century, New Ideas" and (our fave) "I'm Proud to be an Okie from Muskogee."

But having only completed his first year of college — and off in the city of Norman, OK, to boot — what will happen to the rest of his higher education? Rest easy: the frosh mayor-elect says he'll balance politics and school life by moving to a university closer to his new mayor-dom.

  1. That will look good on his resume! HA!
  2. Being born in and currently residing in Muskogee I think I can help explain why Mr. Hammons was elected. He was the best candidate...by far. It was an easy choice. His only legitimate opponent was a former mayor, and anyone who spends time in and pays attention to this town should see that it has gone nowhere for the last thirty years. It's as if there's some secret self-serving syndicate, a good ol' boy network of greasy pockets and scratched backs running the town.
