[chottala.com] Blocked, Banned, Censored and Beaten in Bangladesh

Facebook Ban – Blocked, Banned, Censored and Beaten in Bangladesh

I think it should be made clear that the Facebook ban in Bangladesh has very little to do with what happened in Pakistan or any perceived insult or threat to Islamic sensibilities. The real reason for the banning was that –

1. A caricature of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had been uploaded on to Facebook in which her face was superimposed on to the body of a Hindu goddess. An arrest has been made in this connection.

2. An unedited investigation report of BDR massacre was published (by head of investigation) in Facebook that directly implicated Sheikh Hasina, her ministers, Awami League MP's and Hasina's nephew and local Awami leaders in the massacre.

The decision of Pakistan to ban Facebook and the perceived insult to Islam was used as an excuse/pretext to ban the site in Bangladesh but for most people in the country these issues were largely irrelevant. The main objective in the banning was to suppress freedom of expression and speech that is critical of the government. The government is undertaking certain secularization policies so its concern about Islamic sentiments seems highly dubious. There is now widespread repression in the country and people opposed to the government policies and corruption are now targets of secret killings that has recently been highlighted by Amnesty International. The closure of Amar Desh newspaper is merely another example of the Baksalite tendencies of the government.

THE HIT LIST SO FAR -

  • Channel One closed
  • Jumuna TV closed
  • DeshCalling blog banned ( http://deshcalling.blogspot.com )
  • Talkshow Point of Order closed
  • You Tube banned
  • Facebook banned
  • Amardesh journalist attacked and beaten
  • Amardesh editor was attacked in Dhaka and in London by Awami league thugs
  • New Age editor Nurul Kabir threatened and car followed by armed men
  • Amardesh publisher is arrested by NSI
  • Amardesh closed
  • Amardesh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman arrested and jailed

[chottala.com] Fw: ACTION ALERT: Tell the President to Keep His Promise!

On June 4, 2009, in Cairo , Egypt , President Obama made a historic speech promising American Muslims to remove significant hurdles to zakat:

Here is what President has said, what problem still remains and what need to be done:

http://www.muslimadvocates.org/latest/charity_update/american_muslims_ask_president.html

Full Text of Presidents' address;

**ACTION ALERT**

URGE THE PRESIDENT TO KEEP HIS PROMISE TO PROTECT ZAKAT!

CALL THE WHITE HOUSE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 4th

On June 4, 2009, in Cairo , Egypt , President Obama made a historic speech promising American Muslims to remove significant hurdles to zakat:

"...in the United States , rules on charitable giving have made it harder for Muslims to fulfill their religious obligation.  That's why I'm committed to working with American Muslims to ensure that they can fulfill zakat."

-- President Barack Obama

This June 4th, Muslim Advocates is urging Muslims across the country to call the White House and tell President Obama to keep his promise and reform the many federal laws complicating our ability to give zakat freely.

Did you know?

• Under the law, the government can prosecute donors and charities for well-intentioned donations if support is sent to prohibited organizations or individuals.

• There are currently at least five separate lists for donors to check prior to giving abroad, making it challenging for both individuals and smaller institutions such as mosques to navigate government requirements.

• American Muslims are questioned by federal government officials about their donation to and activities with lawful charities and mosques.

The federal government continues to target Muslim donors and charities for investigation and prosecution, while other faith communities give without fear.  This is wrong and must change.  Together, we must make our voices heard.

ON JUNE 4th MAKE THE CALL!

1) Make the Call:  On the one-year anniversary of the President's Cairo commitment, call the White House at 202.456.1111 and ask President Obama to keep his promise to protect zakat!

To guide your call:

Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I'm calling to ask President Obama to keep his promise made last year to remove hurdles to zakat, or charitable giving.  As a [DONOR or NONPROFIT LEADER] many of these laws and policies have prevented me from giving charity.  In particular, I am concerned about being investigated and prosecuted for giving in good faith.

• I ask the President to take measures to simplify the number of government lists I need to check in order to make a donation.

• I also ask the President to create legal protections to ensure that donors acting in good faith will not be investigated or prosecuted.

Thank you for your time.  I will be keeping track of how the President honors his commitment to remove hurdles to zakat.

2) Share this Action Alert:  Forward this action alert to your family, friends, and community listservs.  Post it on facebook and twitter.  Urge your network to be part of this national call-in day!

Dear chottala readers,

Musa Ibrahim of Bangladesh became successful in his mission reaching the peak of Everest (Himalya). We the Bangladeshi really proud of his achieving this goal. Our great poet Kabi Guru Rabindranath Tagore once told in one of his poem

"সাত কোটি বাঙ্গালীরে হে মুগদ্ব জননী রেখেছ বাঙ্গালী করে মানু্ষ করনি".

If he would be alive to-day he would definitely withdraw his that word. In this regard two questions came to my mind. If any of my learned friends in this chottala group can throw some light about this I will be happy.

     1)    Is he the first Bengali who step his foot on the top of Everest?

     2)    Is he the first Muslim in the world who became successful in reaching the

          highest  peak in  the world?

     Dowllah.

BAL administration is now going to do trial against the criminal of humanity & human right done 1971

For doing lawful trial against any criminals of humanity & human right
Lawful honest truth is needed in speaking & writing by the BAL politicians & BAL supporters.
Mr. Samor DAS may be BAL supporter & by born is low class near to untouchable Hindu so he might not understand what the meaning of the word which is written by him.
He should learn to know that in democratic system election only one can win & others fail
that does not mean that they are culprit..

Dear Mr. Sirajul Haider,

It is obvious in a democratic country election in a democratic way there is no other alternative than to accept our election result provided if it really happened in a democratic way without any rigging. Moreover the people who contested over there in Bhola are also our own people. Nobody is our enemy.

It is a common rule one will win and the other will be defeated. But here people like Mr. Samor Das became over joyous and euphoric because of the defeat of Major Hafiz as if he is happier even more than the actual winner Mr. Shaon. Not only that he is mentioning as culprits to Major Hafiz who was once our freedom fighter as Bir Bikrom in our 1971 liberation war. Very sad Mr. Samor for your this type of comment for a freedom fighter of our country, which type of comment even winning candidate Mr. Shaon also will not utter.

What we see here in foreign countries the winning candidate always used to go to the defeating candidate who is used to be saddened because of the defeat and used to shack hand by the winning candidate in a friendly atmosphere to minimise the tension.

Except few, maximum times we have seen it is lacking in our country. Last time in Mayor election when Sadek Hossain Khoka defeated ex-Mayor Hanif’s son he went to Mayor Hanif’s house to greet Mayor Hanif’s son and he was also greeted in Mayor Hanif's house as elected Mayor in a most cordial way. This should be the actual spirit really needed.

Dowllah.

Hi Samor,

It is obvious that you will support BAL. But the real fact is totally different. It was one of the worst vote rigging in the history of Bhola, just ask any Bhola dwellers and the fact will come out. So please stop your propaganda.
