[chottala.com] Re: Fw: Let sanity prevail in Myanmar

Some Holes in Professor Mannan's work on Myanmar
Abid Bahar

Professor Mannan these days writes on any topic including about history without any in depth knowledge on the subjects of his choice and he writes anything as history. The problem is he doesn't care to mention the source of his information which a scholar or a historian in particular uses to establish his credibility. Instead, he goes with his crediantial, the former Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University. In all his historian like writings, we see holes and the undertone of a hardcore Awami Leaguer. This obviously makes him lose credibility as an educationist and his works becoming propaganda materials at best.

Let's see where are the holes:

(1) Prof says in his article:"The first exodus of Rohingyas after the Second World War happened in 1962 when thousands were uprooted from their home and forced to flee. Some went to Thailand and some came to Chittagong. Subsequently they melted away amongst the local population. The second wave came in 1978 and 1979 when the Myanmar army launched operation 'Nagamin' (Dragon King). Over two lakh Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh." (1)

So far so good. But when he comes to deal with Ziaur Rahman he makes a historically wrong assertion. He says:

"The then President Zia of Bangladesh believed all political solutions lied in military action and sent couple of Navy ships towards the Naf river and amassed some troops along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. Diplomacy was never given a chance. Myanmar retaliated and the situation just aggravated. A second influx happened in 1991-92 when over a quarter of a million Rohingyas were forced to enter Bangladesh. Unofficially the number is much higher."

From my personal experience ( then in 1978 I was a NAP Muzaffer party follower)  but a researcher, I saw Ziaur Rahman was actually successful in a political settlement and was able to to return back most refugees by involving the international community.

Please read the following observation by Imtiaz Ahamed, Professor at the University of Dhaka:

"The pushing-in of the Rohingyas came as a rude shock to Bangladesh, for less than a year
before, in July 1977, Ziaur Rahman, then President of Bangladesh, paid an official visit toMyanmar, and no one was then expecting that such a crisis would unfold. To tackle this problem, the Bangladesh government first began to pursue quiet diplomacy, refraining from making the refugee issue international. But not finding any positive response from Yangon, and faced with an unprecedented task of feeding the refugees, the Bangladesh government took the matter to various world bodies, including the UNHCR. At the end, international pressure, particularly those provided by the Muslim countries, forced Myanmar to sign an agreement with Bangladesh in July 1978 to repatriate all the refugees."(2)

Subject: Let sanity prevail in Myanmar

Straight TalkLet sanity prevail in Myanmarশনিবার, ২৩ জুন ২০১২ Abdul Mannan

Ethnic cleansing in our neighbouring country Myanmar, what we usually know as Burma, when the country is coming out of the shadows of fifty years of military rule is unexpected. However, the practice of ethnic cleansing is not new to this country and it has been practised there for about one hundred years. The Burmese government and its people believe anyone who is not a Buddhist is a foreigner in Burma and must be treated with contempt and relegated to the position of second class citizen where hatred towards people of other belief and faith still remains as the motto of the state. The hatred towards Rohingya Muslims stands over all others and the international community surprisingly decided to keep silent in all cases of human rights violations in recent times involving the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. After about a half a century of military rule Myanmar is inching towards democracy, at least that is what everyone believes. Any intervention for violation of human rights may stall this coveted development, so it is better to turn a blind eye for whatever happens in Myanmar, be it murder, rape, wanton arson and destruction of the Rohingya community! To some any community is spendable in the name of democracy. The Western world has different definition of democracy for different countries and region. However, the big question is how can a country march towards democracy when state sponsored terrorism is rampant and lawlessness in certain parts of the country is encouraged and sponsored while ethnic cleansing encouraged?

Rohingya Muslims mostly inhabit in the Northern state of Arakan, adjacent to Bangladesh. Historians differ as to about the advent of Rohingyas in Arakan. Some believe their ancestors came from Arabia in eighth century while according to others they migrated from Afghanistan and India. Some may have been taken over there by the British as indentured labourers for farming. As Arakan State borders Chittagong and Cox's Bazaar, for hundreds of years the Rohingyas and people from Chittagong and Cox's Bazaar intermingled among themselves and the Rohingyas picked up many habits from their neighbours, including the local dialect. Only the picturesque Naf river separates both. Rohingyas were never accepted by the successive governments of Myanmar as their own people. Even though 135 communities were accepted as ethnic minorities by the Constitution of Myanmar, unfortunately, there was no room for the Rohingya Muslims. Muslims constitute only 4% of total population of Myanmar. Not only Rohingya Muslims but also about three million people of Indian origin, Chinese and Malay Muslims also are denied the right to citizenship of Myanmar. Those recognised as citizens of Myanmar are issued a red identity card while others receive a white one. A Rohingya's card mentions the holder is a non-Burmese, a 'Muslim Rohingya', an enactment of Hitler's policy in Nazi Germany.

My father in his young age went to Burma in the thirties in search of fortune, a common practice in his days. Burma was a land of plenty. He ran a small business but even in his days the Burmese society was sharply divided ethnically. He hardly had any local client in his small restaurant. When Japanese army occupied Burma in 1942, the local Burmese teamed up with the occupation forces to start a bloodletting riot in Rangoon. My father and thousands like him had to flee penniless for home on foot — one of the greatest exoduses of last century. Hundreds died on their way due to cholera and malaria while others were attacked by the locals. They were the casualties of war. The universal belief is Buddhism is a religion of peace, but perhaps not in Myanmar.

The first exodus of Rohingyas after the Second World War happened in 1962 when thousands were uprooted from their home and forced to flee. Some went to Thailand and some came to Chittagong. Subsequently they melted away amongst the local population. The second wave came in 1978 and 1979 when the Myanmar army launched operation 'Nagamin' (Dragon King). Over two lakh Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh. The then President Zia of Bangladesh believed all political solutions lied in military action and sent couple of Navy ships towards the Naf river and amassed some troops along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. Diplomacy was never given a chance. Myanmar retaliated and the situation just aggravated. A second influx happened in 1991-92 when over a quarter of a million Rohingyas were forced to enter Bangladesh. Unofficially the number is much higher.

When Bangladesh was reeling under the pressure of Rohingya refugees no one stood besides this country, except the UNHCR and that too with limited resources. The refugees were huddled into makeshift camps in Teknaf, Kutupalang, Ukhia and Cox's Bazaar. Later, the refugees were moved to two official camps. The refugees camps are no concentration camps and many of the inmates just fled these camps and about half a million melted away into the local populace. Today only about thirty thousand Rohingyas are accounted for in the camps. Thousands managed to get Bangladeshi passports through some unscrupulous middleman and corrupt officials in the government and left the country for Middle East and many of them subsequently got involved into criminal activities hurting the reputation of Bangladesh in those countries. Many got involved in drug and human trafficking and other crimes locally. But what became a matter of grave concern was the fact that some of these camps became breeding grounds for home grown militants from where some religious fundamentalist parties recruited their foot soldiers.

A new ethnic cleansing operation is currently on in the Arakan state and a new wave of Rohingyas are fleeing their homes and trying to enter Bangladesh through Teknaf and Chittagong Hill districts. Based on the previous experience this time the Bangladesh government has been more pragmatic in their approach. The border security forces, the BGB, intercepted most of those trying to enter Bangladesh, fed them, gave them some emergency rations and supplied fuel for their boats and pushed them back into Myanmar. However, this action by the government did not go well with some of our civil society groups who termed that the government should address the problem with more humane approach. The UN and HRW requested Bangladesh to open its doors to let in the unwanted refugees. So was the opinion of the BNP and Jamaat. The later's stand is understandable as earlier during the rule of the four party alliance many of the Rohingyas were enlisted as voters with the condition and expectation that they will offer unconditional support to the alliance. Jamaat also looks at the Rohingya refugees as a rich source for their militant activists. The civil society members though may have taken a different stand other than that of the government should realise that Bangladesh did take in more than half a million Rohingyas earlier but only managed to convince Myanmar to take back only a few thousands in 2005. Myanmar refused to acknowledge that the remaining of the refugees are their citizens and their problem. As a continuation of the earlier stand of the global community, currently all of them have kept silent and failed to put pressure on Myanmar to stop this ethnic cleansing. Jamaat and their allies are capitalising on the issue and have started using doctored photographs and video clippings in the Internet to arouse public sentiment and voice support for allowing Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh. Their intention is anything but holy.

The role of Aung San Suu Kyi vis-à-vis the Rohingya issue is very frustrating. While receiving her Noble Peace Prize after 21 years in Oslo recently she said 'Burma's exiles abroad could play a greater role in healing the divisions between different ethnic groups including the Muslims and the Buddhists.' This is no more than just a lip service. In politics she needs the support of the Buddhists and not the Muslims, though millions of Muslims in Bangladesh voiced their concern for her safety while she was in captivity and demanded her unconditional release.

The solution of Rohingya refugee problem does not lie with Bangladesh but with Myanmar. Myanmar is an important neighbour of Bangladesh and we need to maintain a good relationship with them. The problem should be addressed through strong diplomatic moves in the international arena. Different human rights organistions must be sensitisd. The pesident of Myanmar is expected to visit Bangladesh soon. The Rohingya issue must be given a top priority during all the bilateral talks. No meaningful cooperation is possible when one country creates problems for another. As pragmatic Bangladeshis, we need to support the stand taken by the government in relations to the new influx of refugees. Those advocating letting the Rohingyas to come in should appreciate the ground reality. A country with 147,570 sq km and 160 million people of its own cannot afford the luxury of allowing some more people from another country. During our War of Liberation ten million people entered India as refugees from Bangladesh and all returned once the war was over. Nothing such is going to happen in the case of Rohingyas. At least that is what experience says.

The write is a former Vice-chancellor, University of Chittagong.

Re: [chottala.com] Health Care Law in USA to be mandated

Lats time US govt introduced major change in US Govt Health Care Related reform was Prescription Drug Program, Soon after 9/11 Happened it was affect of intense lobbying by may interest group..I do not know if PUMPING Money in Escallating Health Care field is the way to go..only thing is what will it take next time arround to keep this HEALTH INDUSTRY going...

Comming from Individual with diagnosed with all kind of illnesses..and can still function..and also facing Warren Buffett & govt dictated pending..order for me to be shot on sight...

Though I do not like Justice Scalia very much..i Think taking Scalias argument one step further..Vegetarians could be compelled to eat Meat to Compel Moslems & Jews eat..PORK..

By the way the other Judges argument of..Dr are sworn to what is called a HYPOCRATIC OATH. They are to render medical service.either patient can afford or not...If Dr's do not like that..should chhose different profession..

Medicare do not..cover EYE TREATMENT or...DENTAL..why should MEDICAL TREATMENT be covered...

Even at that these issurers do not cover pre existing conditions..you have to wait TWO yr..before you can get medicare to exclude preexixting condition..what would indivduals do when they acnnot find some to insure them..states health care is thru medicare.or medicaid...they also require waiting period...

Private Insuarce is too expensive...

Subject: [chottala.com] MUJIBS KILLERS IN ISRAEL

This article indicates MUJIBS KILLERS are in ALGERIA, well their is a lawsuit in Swiss Court Over Mujibs assasination brought by of ALGERIA's BUOMEDIN, IF MUJIBS Killers are in ALGERIA. this is also a country that has been some brutal killing and etc infact I read assasins in Horse back and etc. I think like many eastern block countries..that were once ruled for instance YOUGASLAVIA..and others. I think ALGERIA is cuurently ruled by PRO ISRAELI like the author thus that is why they are sheltered their. As far as I know they are in USA assylum arranged by BILL CLINTON of all. I think I encoutered one of them..despite reading one report of him being in CANADA and them refusing to extradite him...to Bangladesh,

It is a predicament I find my self in..What else OE OE OE...INDU BHUSHAN issue and JAMINI BABU & COCA COLA BUSINESS...mess

It is indeed interesting how ISRAELI's feel free in Bangladesh, May Moslems and others may not be that free and then their is press helping their cause. It also indicates work of ANTI JIHADI ACTIVIST, Then they love to wrap thier plight with Plight of others such as Hindus and others. I was talking to a hindu freind of mine, in USA. I mentioned him as I knew he was involved in Dallas Hindu community, how did he feel about  a news report of in Dallas a hindu preist or so who  was being prosecuted for sex charge and etc. His opinion was, well lets admit do you not that..that this types of things happen in Hindu community, should they not be held responsible just because they are hindu. I replied to him to point I agree with him, that if hindu despite where ever it is even in India if they break law in some capacity or so they should be held accountable as any other. I did tell him even at that their are time some of these instances involve things more then normal eyes meet..Thier are many prisons in India and most of the prisoners I assume are Hindu too. Why should it be different if anyn hindu or other is tried or prosecuted. May not belive these some of these lawyers prosecutig have close ties to Jewish Lobby

Here is some thing of significant difference, among Jewish faith as the publication is Jewish. Thier belive in ZIONISM, and its EXPORT arround the world. ZIONISM means JEWS will control the world by controlling worlds wealth. That is, They will controll all the wealth out right in the world or they will control all the wealthies in the world by one mean or other. Thus they will control the world, It is the Jewish Supremacy issue. Well they have money and they can buy many thing including press. It is interesting SALAUDDIN KADER despite his claim to helping many minorities..he does not belive people of other religion are entitled to same rights, access in many if not all just because they are not Moslem. It in a same way, ISRAELIS..as they insist on their supremacy as they are Jews...I guess few will be able to relate to me in my this situation. It is interesting Jews seems to making many claims in Moslem world, some of them may be new citizens of Bangladesh. The thing is they seem to be opening business in Bangladesh, the thing is MOSLEMS cannot do that in ISRAEL..

About Jewish females being taken advantage of...It reminds me of a Moslems Calling card distributer I found thru news paper advertisement. Guess what he told me, he runs a legitimate Calling Card business, but he was candid that, their are many scams in the bsuienss and according to his information most of those scams are perpetrated by Jews..he basically laid it down to me up front...I guess seems Scamming goes on both ways...

Now their is an issue of what they re calling fraud or so... it depends on the extent of scam, I know of a guy Moslem guy in Wichita who was prsecuted for running a Ponzi scheme name ASIF, well he put his childs fathers name as mine thanks to a hindu Dr...The truth is he was the one prosecuted, the truth is he was raising money guess for who, JACK DEBORE..well they own all the MARRIOTTS & DIAMONDS to many others...to TOTAL PETROLEUM..Well JACK is JEW...Now tell me who is Running the scam and who is serving the time..Well story has it he held it for so long that is ASIF..guess his lawyer was a Jew name David Mose who kind of in twist of way even signed me as a Client..I hope publisher publishes this story....It is actually POT calling the Cattle back..

Now thier is a povision in ISLAM..i was told " JAN BACHANAN FARZ"..That is one may resort to even lie if one has to to save his life. Only to save his life...well you can call it what ever, in my situation I was dealing with many thigs health to death of parents aided or directed by very higher up to many other things. Even if I stretched the law to some extent their was never any monetary damage that I did it was never intended that way..just expedited things for me. If nay one scammed any thing..well They say the GORBA, or MEHEMON issue..May be I should say ANAHUTO or ANAKANKHITO...

Good Luck

adeshi pro-Israel journalist pushes on amid charges of fraud

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury holding the English-language Weekly Blitz. (Larry Luxner)
DHAKA, Bangladesh (JTA) -- Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury sat at the cafe of the five-star Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in downtown Dhaka -- capital of the third-largest Muslim nation on Earth -- stridently proclaiming his love for Israel and the Jewish people.
"I am a Zionist and a friend of Israel," he told JTA in a voice loud enough to be heard by hotel guests and local businessmen sipping their afternoon tea at nearby tables.
But nobody paid any attention. That in itself, said Choudhury, represented enormous progress in the impoverished People's Republic of Bangladesh.
"Before 2003, you could not utter the word Israel in this country," the devout Muslim said during a lengthy interview. "Now we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, and all the Jewish community in Dhaka participates. Even in some Bangladeshi media, they now allow positive articles on Israel. And I am more vocal than ever before."
Choudhury, 46, is publisher of the English-language Weekly Blitz -- one of hundreds of newspapers in this overcrowded, predominantly Muslim nation of 160 million. He's also a fraud, according to some Jews in the United States and Israel who once supported him.
On Nov. 29, 2003, half a year after he began publishing his anti-jihadist tabloid, the media mogul and father of two was arrested at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport as he was about to board a flight to Bangkok with connections to Tel Aviv.
"I was tortured with electric shocks. They put nails in my ear. They broke my kneecap with a hockey stick. I was interrogated for 15 days and not allowed to bathe," he said. "They told me, 'confess you're a Zionist spy. Otherwise, why do you support Judaism?' I said that I'm a good Muslim, and a good Muslim must trust the Jews and Christians. And I'm proud of that."
On Jan. 24, 2004, barely two months after his initial arrest, Choudhury was charged with sedition, treason and blasphemy. Eventually the sedition charge was dropped, and he was freed on bail in April 2005. His office was later firebombed, he was beaten by mobs and at one point briefly kidnapped by members of Bangladesh's feared Rapid Action Battalion.
Richard Belkin, a Chicago doctor and Jewish activist, heard about Choudhury's plight and petitioned U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) to intervene on the journalist's behalf. In February 2007, a resolution co-sponsored by Kirk and Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) demanding that Bangladesh drop all remaining charges against Choudhury passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 409 to 1.
The unlikely pro-Israel crusader quickly became the darling of the literary world.
Brenda West, writing in the online New English Review, noted that "many newspapers and institutions sang his praises with weekly articles. The Wall Street Journal carried admiring articles about him, as did many other newspapers, and bloggers flooded the Internet with their awe-stricken appreciation of what looked like Choudhury's dedication to Western humanistic principles."
Yet soon after his release on bail, allegations began surfacing that Choudhury was a ruthless con artist with a criminal past -- and a pseudo-journalist guilty of plagiarism who had strong Islamist connections before he inexplicably became an anti-Islamist. Some have even suggested that Choudhury he may be an agent posing as a friend of the Jews in order to raise money for Islamic fundamentalist organizations.
Belkin, who runs a website that exposes alleged Muslim ethnic cleansing of minority Hindus in Bangladesh, has not spoken to Choudhury in several years. Asked why by JTA, he declined to explain. Nevertheless, Belkin expressed nothing but admiration for the man he helped rescue.
"While Shoaib and I are no longer working together, nor have we been in contact for some time, he retains a place in my heart for his personal courage and for the ground he broke," Belkin told JTA in an email from Chicago. "Shoaib and I have taken separate paths since our struggles with Islamists and their water carriers, but those efforts revealed a man who willingly put himself in danger for a principle."
Other Jews who had stood up for Choudhury are less kind.
In March 2011, Aryeh Yosef Gallin, founder and president of the Root and Branch Association -- a nonprofit group that promotes cooperation between Israel and other nations -- expelled Choudhury from its Islam-Israel Fellowship after reports surfaced that the Bangladeshi had bilked "emotionally vulnerable single Jewish ladies" out of tens of thousands of dollars.
West, a self-described "Jewish woman and patriotic American who became very involved in counter-jihad work after 9/11," told JTA that "subsequent research, easily available to anyone who bothered to do a little bit of reading, showed that he was a total fraud with criminal ties. He had swindled not just two ardent Jewish supporters but everyone in the Zionist and counter-jihad movement who believed in him."
Some claims that Choudhury made in the interview did appear to be farfetched. For example, he insisted that his country has at least 5,000 Jews. Nearly all references speak of a Jewish community numbering no more than a few hundred.
Choudhury also said, "You can now find Torahs in every bookstore in Bangladesh," and that the 2,200-square-foot building facing Purana Paltan Street that supposedly housed Dhaka's only synagogue sits on land now worth $10 million.
A plaque on the aging structure clearly identifies it as a Masonic lodge built in 1910. Nowhere are Hebrew inscriptions, Stars of David or anything remotely Jewish visible from either the outside or inside.
Choudhury prints 25,000 copies of the Weekly Blitz; it sells for 5 taka, the equivalent of 7 U.S. cents. He boasted that his newspaper -- he says it's "the most influential in the Muslim world" -- was the first in Bangladesh to write about Islamic nongovernmental organizations operating in the country under the patronage of al-Qaeda.
"Not a single article of ours has ever been protested by the government," he said. "This means we have total credibility."
Despite Choudhury's insistence that his detractors' accusations are all false, it does not appear that his legal troubles will disappear soon. He is still facing blasphemy and treason claims.
"The court continues to postpone my trial, so I have to go to court every month, then they give me a new date," he said. "They don't have any evidence, so they can't continue the trial. But they won't drop the charges either because the government fears that would annoy the Islamists and anti-Semites in this country."

Subject: Re: [chottala.com] MY HYPOTHESIS...

I have come to understand the POTENCY OF WHAT is used to bake things such as bread, cakes & etc. Well it is YEAST...one of the largest supplier of YEAST is brand called FLEISCHMAN also a brand of Butter too. The thing is YEAST is such a part of that contributed to human civilization is not woth mentioning..

Well knew know people learned to light fire by rubbing two stones in high speed. Thus the begining of cooked food. As you need fire to cook with. I guess they are called flint stones. Well some of these stones have minerals that ingnites under heat, Something generated in fast speed rubbing that is an ARC. Well still true that is how we light matches to lighter...
Well as it begins with cooked food..one of the first item would be bread as civilization imporved. Guess what CHRISTAIN as some of pray god before we start  a meal. They thank GOD for providing the bread. Well assume intail days of bread were't as puffy..then how did bread become puffy. Well they had to add Yeast to the dough.
Well Jesus Christ was SHEPARD some one that raises SHEEPS and etc..well they also milk SHEEPS..Well Milk is what CHEESE or YOGURTS are from well it is the DOI as we call it...Bengali..or CURD...Hint is Jesus Christ the son of GOD..was the one first dveloped product related to dairy, though YEAST is not used to make Butter..but the Cheese & Yougart goes back long Long back now this coupled with Bread Yeast is and had to have been a very critical discovery...wonder how or who developed Yeast...Hint is as I have tied YEAST also to many illness. Well thye blamed Jesus for the illnesses too...that is why so much brutality to killing as though some Jews would not admit to but..hint is Jews Killed Jesus a cruel death only few are capable of carrying on..Well Jesus was know to bring alive from death and some one who reappeared soon after his death..man it seems even Christains belive in some form of re birth as they call it resurrection....

Well this CHEESE & YOUGART also use YEAST in the separation process...back to Yeast issue...well..in that case was Jesus actually the dicoverer of YEAST, if why would he be blamed..back to the same issue technology in wrong hand...well Jesus is preceeded by Moses...well a plague appeared a form of skin illness killed many when including the son of HERODATAUS guess what the skin illness is very similar to symptoms of AIDS. Well that ended all the aspiration of Jesus rival the KING Heradautus. It seems illnesses existed long before Jesus. The thing is Moses him self also dealth with Sheeps and etc...

Their could be many issues among reviving dead could anger others too...specialy if some one had them killed, well some Christans ardently belive in Faith healing modern medicine may disagree..it is deep rooted conviction in thier faith....This is where I think BUDDHAS QUEST conincides with CHRIST may be it may be in other faiths too...

Well thenwhat is YEAST...I have many theory...As it expands under mild to moderate heat. I think it is form of CHEMICAL REACTION that generates COMBUSTION or IGNITION as in case of IGNITAION it assocates with may be ver small small explosion that creates bubbles. Well back to the same question what is YEAST then. No Clue but sure is a very higly coveted consumer item and consumed in many thing including PETRO CHEMICAL..as it is used so much must be money to be made..

Lets look at few things that BLOWS well Does GASOLINE or FUEL of any kind well we can't live with out Fire.
Well Guess what POP CORN..it is a very small explosion under heat. Well Then what happens to POWDER form of CORN..will it the Powder POP Too under mild to Moderate heat...This is one theory...

Well, RICE POPS too as we make RICE POP CORN in Bangladesh and etc..Wll it is Rice in Shell that POPS..well what happens to RICE Powder will it POP or BLOW..

Well it has to be in this some form of GRAIN..lest see if I xcan make some money like FLIESMANNs too..

Food for thought...My own analysis..

Burmese state media has issued a retraction for the use of racially offensive language in its official appeal for calm after sectarian violence saw ten Muslims brutally killed by an angry mob on Sunday in Arakan state.
A government statement published in the New Light of Myanmar on Tuesday warned against “anarchic and lawlessâ€ acts, but attracted a virulent backlash for referring to the victims as “kalarâ€ â€" a racial slur for Muslims or persons of Indian appearance.
In a correction published today, the government paper urged readers to refer to the victims as “Islamic residents.
Dozens of people took to the streets in Rangoon yesterday to protest growing anti-Muslim violence and accused the government of fanning the flames of sectarian tensions. Political leaders and civil society groups appealed for calm and called on the government to issue an apology.
“The newspapers should not stoke this conflict. Are they trying to suggest that one race is more violent than others? said ethnic Arakanese MP Aye Maung from the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party.
Religious tensions have flared in Arakan state after three Muslim men were accused of the gang rape and murder of an ethnic Rakhine girl. It culminated in a bloody massacre on Sunday, when an angry mob set upon a bus filled with Muslim pilgrims and beat ten of them to death before setting the vehicle ablaze and defiling their corpses.
The violence has once again brought to the fore allegations of entrenched racism in Burmese society, particularly targeted against Muslims and the much-persecuted Rohingya minority group â€" dismissed as “illegal Bengali immigrantsâ€ by the government.
Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi today finally threw her voice into the debate, calling for the perpetrators to be held to account in accordance with the rule of law. She added that “the majority of the people in a society should have sympathy for the minority.
“Maybe some people wouldn’t like me saying this but I have to say what I must say regardless of whether they like it or not. When you are the majority in a society, then you are the strong party. If you are strong then you must be generous and sympathetic. I would like to see all people in Burma get along with each other regardless of their religion and ethnicity.
In the past, Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy has carefully steered clear of discussing Burma’s Muslim minority, especially the Rohingya, which is seen a hot-button political issue that risks alienating many of its supporters.
A joint statement issued by several Rohingya and human rights groups on Monday also called for religious tolerance and reconciliation.
“The government is fully responsible for the law and order situation in the whole country. It should not make the Muslims scapegoats, but it has full responsibility to protect the rights, honour and dignity of all citizens, they said.

Murder of Muslims in Taungup due to Lack of Legal Protection

Taungup: The killing of ten Muslims in a mob attack on a bus in Taungup in southern Arakan State was the result of a lack of protection by law enforcement said a local resident who witnessed the attack.
undefined“If the army or police had controlled the mob, they would have been able to save the victims. They knew the situation well, but the did not do anything to control the mob or protect the victims. The attack did not happen instantly. They were just in the situation of pulling and pushing for a long time. As the authorities did not do anything to control the situation, the incident eventually happened, said the resident.
He added that army and police personnel were just behind the mob while the attack was happening.
“I don’t know how the problem would be tackled by the authorities. The police and the army were there when the mob was beating the victims, but they did not do anything to control the mob or protect the victims. The attack happened right in front of their eyes. So, it was just a matter that the law enforcers did not do what they should have done during the attack, he added.
Another eyewitness, a woman from Taungup also confirmed that the police and soldiers were at the scene when the attack happened.
“The policemen and soldiers were there on the spot when the attack was happening, but they did not prevent the attack and did not say anything to the youths to stop their attack on the victims. They were just watching the attack with their hands folded, said the woman.
Residents said "local authorities were aware of the situation and had the means to prevent the attack. The mob was very noisy along the road as it followed the Roma Thitsar Bus that departed from its station in downtown Taungup carrying the victims. The mob was able to stop the bus outside of town because some of them had followed the bus on motorcycles" they added.
According to an unconfirmed report, "The bus was said to have been driven into the compound of the immigration department on the road as the mob followed it, but responsible officials in the department forced the bus to back out, saying they could not take any responsibility because the bus was carrying Muslims."
U Khin Hla, Secretary of the National League for Democracy in Taungup, told the VOA Burmese program that "the Muslims were killed due to the lack of law and order in his hometown."
“I think such an incident happened due to the lack of law and order because it happened in broad daylight just around 4:30 pm, and it was also not just an incident in which a man hacked and killed another and ran away. On the contrary, I think the officials who are working for the rule of law and order in the country are very responsible for such an incident, said U Khin Hla.
When contacted by Narinjara, Daw Saw Mra Razar Lunn, Chairperson of the Rakhine Women’s Union, she also said, “I think the lack of rule of law is to blame for [such violence]. The authorities are responsible to carry out the rule of law in the country, so the people, regardless if they are Buddhist or Muslim, are able to live together peacefully. Anyone who commits a crime action should have taken against them in accordance with the existing laws.
Taungup is situated as the main gateway for travel to central Burma from Arakan State. The authorities are said to have sowed anti-Muslim sentiment among the people of the town in order to help prevent Muslim migration and settlement into central Burma from the region.

By Larry Luxner · June 10, 2012
