[chottala.com] The Robert Vadra mystery

The Robert Vadra mystery: Forget property, how did he acquire Priyanka?

by Lakshmi Chaudhry

Each time Robert Vadra steps into the spotlight, the average mango folks can't help but wonder, "Really? She married him?"  Of all the men at all the Delhi A-list parties, Priyanka Gandhi picked this guy?

"Vadra's sweet-heart deal with DLF raises many questions but what makes no sense whatsoever is how a petty brass trader from Moradabad, who looks more like Priyanka's chauffer than her significant other, could patao a Nehru-Gandhi scion and marry into India's most powerful political family. We demand that Vadra come clean on this," thunders a fake Arvind Kejriwal in an Unreal Times spoof of the unfolding drama.

The bigger mystery, as the humour mag cheekily points out, is not how Vadra got rich, but how he got hitched. As a friend wryly observes, "It's like she married Ajay Devgn." And that's a bit unfair to Devgn.

"Businessman Robert Vadhera is unlikely to figure anywhere among the country's 1,000 most eligible bachelors. Priyanka Gandhi's 28-year-old beau is short, fair, rather stocky and only moderately well-to-do," begins a 1997 Outlook profile of Vadra the fiancé. The article went on to damn him with faint praise, describing him variously as "unremarkable man"; "an average student and not an outstanding sportsman"; and, most amusingly, as "a bit of a Puppy," and not of the canine kind. According to Outlook, Robert's own friends in Moradabad were in shock: "We haven't stopped wondering what Priyanka could possibly see in the boy. There is nothing exceptional about him or the family." Ouch!

In other words, he was all crass, no class, and unlike his predecessors, not even easy on the eye.

Now, the Gandhis have typically married down: Feroze was a no-name backbencher, Maneka a beauty pageant type, and Sonia will perennially remain "that Italian waitress" to her detractors. So a petty trader from Moradabad isn't exactly unprecedented. What makes Robert exceptional is that he is astoundingly, indisputably dumb. While neither the Gandhis nor their spouses have been towering intellectuals, none of them have come remotely close to matching Vadra's lack of intelligence.

The now infamous Facebook update — "Mango people in banana republic" — was not just crassly elitist but just plain stupid. It requires the complete absence of common sense. The presence of even one gray cell may have given our Robert some pause. Just maybe I shouldn't sneer at ordinary people in the midst of an unfolding corruption scandal targeting my disproportionate wealth. Just maybe it spells political suicide for my illustrious in-laws. Just maybe the media is tracking my Facebook account since my last update made headline news.

Damaadji entertained no such eminently sensible doubts, not even when deleting his FB account in a huff: "Obviously, it seems I have people on my Facebook account who do not have a sense of humour. Everything I write becomes news and further debates on television?? I have decided to delete my account."

Obviously, Robert isn't very good at comprehending the obvious.

"Nothing I say is premeditated," said Robert in a TOI interview earlier this year, or — as it turns out — remotely intelligent. Tooting his own horn, he declared, "I am very determined, be it business or my fitness. I've lost 20 kg in five years. And in this much time, if I'd wanted to, I could have become a big celebrity. It's been a fight to stay normal."

"I gave up my life for Priyanka, fighting every day to not be a celebrity," he insists again toward the end of the interview — just in case we don't quite grasp the full measure of his sacrifice. Poor Robert, condemned to fight a lifelong battle against fame, valiantly staving off even the slightest hint of imminent success for the sake of his wife.

A battle he has clearly lost. Despite his best efforts to remain an unknown loser, his many ventures have been vastly  and inexplicably profitable. Crores of rupees have wilfully slithered onto their balance sheets and into his pockets without a single sound business reason. As Mint editor R Sukumar notes:

To call the story of the growth of Vadra's business empire… rags to riches would be stretching things a bit simply because there were no rags at its beginning. If anything, The Hindu's description makes the business model of Vadra's companies sound like a perpetual motion machine, with assets swelling despite no increase in business activity.

Then again, Robert's ability to acquire precious commodities has always relied on the miraculous, as Unreal Times points out: "Certainly, Vadra's acquisition of Priyanka was disproportionate to all his known sources of talent and Vadra needs to give a full account of his courtship to the public."

We will never solve the mystery behind the miracle that is Robert Vadra. But his saving virtue for the Gandhi family is clear: He makes his brother-in-law look like Albert Einstein.

[chottala.com] Awami League, Dr Kamal and 1/11

Awami League, Dr Kamal and 1/11

Syed Badrul Ahsan

The Awami League could have been more circumspect in handling the
matter of the alliance forged by Dr Kamal Hossain and Prof Badruddoza
Chowdhury. As an organisation historically committed to an upholding
of the democratic process, the Awami League should have been the first
among political parties to welcome the possibility of a third
democratic force in the country.

In the event, the Awami League disappointed a whole swath of people,
among whom are some of its traditional supporters. It has indirectly
hinted at a conspiracy on the part of the former foreign minister,
Kamal Hossain, in that he might be about to cause a repeat of 11
January 2007.

The Awami League, through its general secretary, has thus made two
points: it has gone after Kamal Hossain and it has come down hard on
the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed between January 2007
and January 2009.

First, let us look at Kamal Hossain's record. He served as
constitutional adviser to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman between
February 1969 and March 1971. Prior to that, he served on Mujib's
legal defence team in the Agartala conspiracy case trial. Bangabandhu
had enough confidence in him to make him part of the Awami League team
entrusted to negotiate with the Yahya Khan military junta in the
critical weeks before the Pakistan army launched a genocide in
Bangladesh on 25 March 1971.

Kamal Hossain was arrested by the Pakistan army in early April 1971
and flown to erstwhile West Pakistan where he was in custody, as
Bangabandhu was, for the entire duration of the War of Liberation. At
the time, quite a good deal of innuendo and insinuation was spread
about his "surrender" to the army and not until we heard that he and
his family had arrived in London in January 1972 with Bangabandhu that
we were convinced he had not let the Father of the Nation down. Those
who had been vocal against Kamal Hossain during the war went silent,
for good reason.

It was Kamal Hossain's job, one Bangabandhu happily gave him, to draft
the constitution of Bangladesh in early 1972. As the nation's law
minister, Kamal did the job with finesse, to a point where the
constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in December 1972.
Following the country's first general elections in March 1973, Kamal
Hossain took over as foreign minister and in that capacity did a
remarkable job of ensuring Bangladesh's entry into the United Nations
and other global bodies. His articulation of the new nation's foreign
policy abroad did us an immense lot of good and convinced nations
abroad of our commitment to a peaceful world.

A further instance of Kamal Hossain's integrity, as an individual and
as a politician, came in August 1975 when he refused to be part of
Khondokar Moshtaque Ahmed's usurper regime after Bangabandhu's murder.
As foreign minister, he had been on a visit to Yugoslavia when the
coup occurred. To his credit, he refused to return home.

In 1981, with the Awami League splintered into a number of factions,
it was Kamal Hossain who proposed that Sheikh Hasina, self-exiled
elder daughter of the Father of the Nation, be elected president of
the party. That was political ingenuity and the Awami League has
benefited from the move. In November 1981, a grateful party nominated
Kamal Hossain to challenge Justice Abdus Sattar for the presidency.
Kamal lost, but emerged with his stature enhanced.

That is Kamal Hossain's story. Now, to the matter of the 1/11
caretaker administration. The Awami League and many others are surely
correct in believing that the Fakhruddin government did quite a number
of unsavoury things in its time. Its move to prevent Sheikh Hasina
from returning home from abroad and trying to compel Khaleda Zia to go
into exile embarrassed it to no end. Its restrictions on politics and
at the same time allowing three individuals to form their political
parties under cover of the emergency was a contradiction it could not
explain. Its harsh treatment of politicians, academics and students in
custody was a blot on our conscience we are yet to leave behind us.

But there is too the positive side to the 1/11 administration. For the
first time in the nation's history, it drove home the lesson that
politicians could not do wrong and then expect to get away with it.
Law and order was a certainty during its time. It gave shape to a
powerful Anti-Corruption Commission and an independent Election
Commission. Most importantly, it gave the country a fresh voters' list
that was truly a new beginning for citizens.

The BNP's diatribe against the 1/11 administration is understandable,
for the state of emergency laid all its plans waste. But when the
Awami League chooses to pounce on the Fakhruddin government, supreme
irony appears to be at work. Consider this: the arrival of the 1/11
team drove from office the controversial caretaker government led by
President Iajuddin Ahmed, one that was ready to conduct farcical
elections on 22 January 2007. The 1/11 men removed the MA Aziz-led
Election Commission, which was ready with tens of thousands of false
and dead voters to hand a victory to the party it favoured. In the
end, despite the bumps and the stumbles, the 1/11 caretaker government
did deliver a free and fair election, the chief beneficiary of which
was the Awami League.

That is the record. It speaks for itself.

[chottala.com] What will the two Zionist agents do now? The storm is messing up the Israeli agenda.

During this critical moments let us pray for the safety of all human beings living in that area because all those people are not Romney or Obama they are just human being like us created by Master Creator Allah (swt)so cursing all of them are not fair. They are ruling the entire world because we fails to follow a complete and marvelous guidance book "Quran" and closed our mind and lost the way Allah (swt) shown to us how to rule this world so instead of accepting our faults why you are blaming them.

"0 ye dwellers of the earth, God is that Almighty Who has made you His assistant and viceregent on the earth (that you take His administration and management in your hand and He hath raised one people many stages over the others so that He may test, in this struggle for survival your capabilities and potential with which He endued you. Remember that if you did not acquit yourselves in this test and lagged behind, certainly God is quick in punishment: And if, on the basis of your efforts, you surpassed others, then there is no doubt that He is Oft-Forgiving and Most Merciful." (6: 166)

Please also read the following article.

In spite of the difficulties which arise from the brevity with which the Quran enunciates the Divine Law and insufficiency of one's own knowledge, its framework is so obvious to men of understanding that it is impossible for such a brief book to be clearer and more thorough. Apparently it is an extremely terse document but it claims to have stated everything. Complexity is inevitable in conciseness, but the Revealer of the Quran has pronounced it to be couched in extremely simple language (yassarna hu belisaneka). For centuries have the people been piling up commentaries to explain what the Quran means, but it insists on being an open and manifest book (Al-Kitabil Mubin). Scholars of Shariah consider each of its verses incomprehensible without long explanatory notes but its own pronouncement is of being an exhaustive book, an explanation of everything (al-Kitabul Mufassalan). The present-day Maulvis consider it a sin to reason what wisdom and knowledge it embodies, but its own invitation is to ponder and reflect (Afla Yatadabbarun). The admirers of Tradition do not accept a single verse to be independent of the voluminous collections of Hadith but its own pronouncement is that it is adequate, contains full programme and nothing after it is needed by those who believe, and the verdict of one of its greatest admirers (Hazrat Umar) was that enough is God's Book. The linguists tag it to the rules of grammar but those who understood and acted upon it for two hundred years did it without the aid of grammar. The Islamic world has for long been applauding its literary beauties and linguistic charm but its own declaration is that it is not a poetry; "Bring a wisdom like unto this" is what it challenges. its 'upholders' for the last centuries have been mostly those who were by and large ignorant of the Work of God; who had no knowledge of nature, and were averse to what is matter of fact, but the Ouran has invariably addressed itself to peoples who possess knowledge and have faith. Its enemies are vociferous—and admirers saying in a somewhat subdued voice--that the Quran is devoid of harmony, but it has refuted the allegations by saying Aalazina ja alul Quraana idhina. In short, notwithstanding diverse claims of its admirers, what emerges after its deep and continuous study is that  it is an extremely profound and COMPREHENSIVE document; there exists in it full and final programme of man's collective progress; it has fully provided for DEEP REFLECTION and utmost contemplation. Within itself, it is COMPLETE; it does not stand in need of volumes of human conjectures and opinion-mongering; it is its own true EXPLANATION; it is independent of all man-made and changeable grammar, and has an unalterable syntax of its own; its own terminology is enough to express its conceptions and ideas, for them it certainly needs no outside help. Its legal terms and constitutional references have been stated in its own context with such perfection and precision, certitude and correctness, that not the slightest doubt arises in the interpretation of any part of it. There is such an amazing CONSISTENCY in the exactness of each word's meaning -- and God's intention in the use of that word -- that it has the same objective from the start to the end; no amount of consensus, twisting or distortion can alter what is intended by the word. Each verse has only one meaning; only one course is possible in its context; it has only one purpose, one verdict and one intention, one context and one theme. It is on this basis that the Quran is completely free from the ugly human defect of contradiction or redundancy. Where verses are suspected of contradiction or give an indication of repetition or inconsistency, there has occurred some drawback in divining their true meanings; some inadequacy has taken place, some defect has certainly occurred. In fact, the Quran itself sometimes puts two apparently contradictory or synonymous statements close to each other in the same text and in the course of the same argument, and by giving a kick to the slow-paced steed of man's imagination provides a spontaneous proof of there being no contradiction or repetition. It is CONCISE, but this conciseness is the direct proof of the AUTHENTICITY and UNITY of what it means. It is a LAW book, but the very fact of its being Law provides an irrefutable evidence of its HARMONY, oneness of the meaning and consistency of the objective. Where it appears disjointed there must have occured some confusion in understanding it; some improper twisting might have taken place; somewhere grammer has played the havoc, some influence of a false Hadith has lingered on, customs and traditions have concealed something, ignorance has caused some confusion, conjecture has played some mischief, foolishness has made some inroads. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with the two pieces occurring together; paucity of knowledge and absence of the intervening links of the argument in the reader's mind make it appear disjointed. When the inner meaning of things uncovers the connection of one reality with the other, the link is automatically established.(Late Mashriqi)

[chottala.com] Hurricane Tips from CDC

Please stay warm and safe. Thanks...Miro

If your city is under a hurricane watch or warning, the CDC says you should:
ü  Learn about your local community's emergency plans, including location of emergency shelters and evacuation routes.

ü  within the home, make sure you identify potential home hazards and know how to secure them before the storm strikes: Be prepared to turn off electrical power when there is standing water, fallen power lines, or before you evacuate.

ü  Turn off gas and water supplies before you evacuate and make sure structurally unstable building materials are secured. It is also good practice to keep a fire extinguisher and make sure your family knows where it is and how to use it.

ü  Have your important documents handy including insurance policies, wills, licenses, stocks and important medical documents that you might need to grab in a pinch.

The CDC recommends you stock your home with emergency supplies. They are:-

ü  Several clean containers of water, large enough for a three-to-five day supply -- about five gallons per person

ü  A supply of non-perishable foods that can last up to five days. Non-perishable foods may include peanut butter, protein bars, dry cereal or granola, nuts, crackers, canned juices and ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables.

ü  A first aid kit and manual.

ü  A battery-powered radio, flashlights, and extra batteries.

ü  Sleeping bags, extra blankets.

ü  Water-purifying supplies, such as chlorine or iodine tablets or unscented, ordinary household chlorine bleach.

ü  Prescription medicines and special medical needs.

ü  Baby food and/or prepared formula, diapers, and other baby supplies.

ü  Disposable cleaning cloths, such as "baby wipes" for the whole family to use in case bathing facilities are not available.

ü  Personal hygiene supplies, such as soap, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, etc.
