Jamaat-e-Islami now struggles to come up with an effective strategy to face the current crisis arising from the large number of arrests of its party leaders across the country.

Party leaders said they would observe the whole situation while keeping in touch with their international contacts and fight legal battles to free their leaders including Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.

ATM Azharul Islam, acting secretary general of Jamaat, said, "We are observing the situation. The legal battle to free our leaders will continue along with a peaceful movement."

Jamaat lawmaker and its Dhaka unit general secretary Hamidur Rahman Azad said they cannot take the arrests of the party's top leaders lightly but being a political party they would put emphasis on a peaceful movement.

Law enforcers on June 29 arrested Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid and Delwar Hossain Sayedee and also detained Abdul Quader Molla and Mohammad Kamaruzzaman on 13 July.

Of them, Molla and Kamaruzzaman were arrested on charge of mass murder in 1971.

Party leaders however ruled out the idea that the party supporters and leaders of the new generation don't want controversial leaders, highly criticised for their dubious role during the Liberation War, to be at the helm of Jamaat.

Both Azhar and Azad termed the war crimes allegations against Jamaat leaders funny.

They said the government is using the issue in a planned way to weaken the opposition by crushing Jamaat.

Azhar said the government targeted Jamaat to weaken the opposition fearing a possible anti-government movement. But it has to keep in mind that Jamaat is a political party, which is registered with the Election Commission and has representation in parliament.

"It is true that we are worried about the present situation."

But the party knows how to tackle it like it did in the past, he said.

Azad said they would not accept such autocratic attitude of the government but they will continue a peaceful movement.

A number of Jamaat leaders said they are worried about the arrests of the party leaders across the country and considered it a deep crisis for the party for the first time in the last two decades.

They said the party has decided to adopt a wait-and-see policy for now.

[chottala.com] Bangladesh bans Maududi's books

Bangladesh bans books written by radical Islamic author

A scale, the election symbol of the Jamaat-e-Islami party The government wants to curb the Jamaat-e-Islami party

The Bangladeshi government has ordered mosques and libraries across the country to remove all books written by a controversial Islamic scholar.

The chief of the government-funded Islamic Foundation told the BBC that the books by Syed Abul Ala Maududi encouraged "militancy and terrorism".

Mr Maududi - who died in 1979 - is the founder of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.

His works are essential reading for supporters of the Jamaat-e-Islami party in the region.

Born in India, the Pakistani scholar is considered the most prominent theorist of radical Islam in modern South Asian history.

But Bangladeshi officials say Mr Maududi's writings promote radicalism and his ideological goal was to capture power in the name of Islam.

"His writings are against the peaceful ideology of Islam. So, it is not correct to keep books of Mr Maududi in mosques," Islamic Foundation Director-General Shamim Mohammad Afjal told the BBC.

The government has now ordered nearly 24,000 libraries attached to mosques to remove his books immediately. Some have already started to do so.

A senior official from Jamaat-e-Islami, ATM Azharul Islam, described the move as an attack on Islam.

"Mr Maududi's books are being published in many countries and there have been no complaints against his writings so far," he said.

The decision by the Awami League-led government is widely seen as part of its efforts to curb the activities of Jamaat-e-Islami, accused by many Bangladeshis of collaborating with the Pakistani army during the 1971 war of independence.

Five senior leaders of the party were arrested recently on charges of committing mass murder during the war. The party denies the accusations.

Re: [chottala.com] War crime criminals of 1971

    Dear all

It is really shame that those who were opposing the creation of Bangladesh were ministers in Bangladesh . They also used Bangladesh flag on their cars while ministers. Can we just think how that happened. Who were behind them to make them misnisters who were originally bitter enemy of Bnagladesh. I don't want to elaborate the whole story  is known to  all us.

Please give due consideration and help to make things happen.

    Thanks.

Subject: [chottala.com] War crime criminals of 1971

    Dear all,

The incidents in 1971 during liberation war in the then East Pakistan is now a hot topic as  recent trial is going on of those war criminals. To speak about war crimes there were so many involved as war criminals. To begin with the actual war crimes started with:-

(1)Yahiya Khan the then dictator President of Pakistan.

(2)The second war crime personal was power hungry guy Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

(3)In the third category war criminals were Jamaat-E-Islami leaders and their followers.

(4)In the 4th category General Tikka Khan, General Niazi and all those Pakistani soldiers involved in genocide and raping.

    To discuss all these categories:-

                  1)  Most probably in the year 1968 or 1969 Yahiya Khan took power from Ayub Khan at gun point by force. Then he tried to be a popular man and later on because of unrest in the whole of Pakistan suddenly he declared to give general election with a wrong misconception that West Pakistanis will be again winning and will be coming to power to rule whole of Pakistan East and West both. He did never imagined and possessed a slightest idea that the East Pakistani people will be going to elect overwhelmingly their most popular leader Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Out of three hundred seats(300) in the whole of Pakistan Assembly Sheikh Mujibur Rahman captured 167 seats which appeared to the West Pakistani rulers as a bolt from the blue.

                  2)   Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who won 87 seats out of 300 seats made a new tactics by telling Sheikh Mujibur Rahman won majority seats in East Pakistan and he himself by getting 87 seats won majority in West Pakistan bypassing the idea of winning by our Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the whole of Pakistan occupying the first position or number one position and he (Z.A.Bhutto) himself got the 2nd position. Because Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto never wanted to have a seat in the opposition bench and side by side the military junta of Pakistan never wanted to be ruled by any East Pakistani Bengali leader. This was the turning point of all troubles created by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto along with his compatriots Pakistani Army dictators. For the long 25 years those West Pakistani rulers ruled over our East Pakistan looting our East Pakistan like anything and when a chance came for an East Pakistani leader to rule over Pakistan as a head of state they started showing their resentment over it as they used to underestimate Bengalis from the very beginning. Actually division of Pakistan did by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto by uttering that very word he won in West Pakistan and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman won in East Pakistan.

                 3)   The third category war crimes did by Jamaat-E- Islami leaders with the idea of keeping Pakistan united and not the division of Muslims as a whole. This was their wrong idea they possessed in their mind at that time as because  those Pakistani Army ruling Junta when already started genocide and raping, there was no question of remaining in one Pakistan as one Muslim state any more. Jamaatis wanted to keep Pakistan united upto the last even by killing innocent Bengali civilians and raping innocent Bengali women.

                 4) Pakistan was created for a separate homeland for the Muslims of India and the proposal first came from a Bengali leader of the then East Bengal Sher-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Hoque in Lahore round table conference sometimes before 1947. The whole of East Bengal Muslims overwhelmingly supported and voted to create Pakistan which the peoples of  West Pakistan did not take so seriously like that of East Begal Muslims at that time. Bengali Muslims who took a great interest in the creation of Pakistan did a great mistake by accepting the Muslims of West Pakistan as their Muslim brothers. The result of which what those so called West Pakistani Muslim did with us is unforgettable and remarkable in the history. In short Pakistan was created by Bengalis and destroyed by Punjabis.

           Dowllah.
