KADUNA, NIGERIA—Burned corpses with machete wounds lay in roads and smoke rose above this city where rioting broke out again Tuesday among Muslim opposition supporters who were angered by the announcement that the Christian incumbent president had won the election.

On the outskirts of Kaduna, burned out minibuses and cars littered the highways, and at least six charred bodies could be seen. Skull caps and sandals were strewn nearby, left behind by those who frantically fled amid the chaos.

Authorities and aid groups have hesitated to release tolls following the riots across northern Nigeria for fear of inciting reprisal attacks, but the National Emergency Management Agency confirmed there had been fatalities. The Nigerian Red Cross said Tuesday that nearly 400 people had been wounded.

"We use this opportunity to plead with all our political leaders and religious leaders to condemn the acts so that our country will not witness such again," Jonathan said Tuesday after electoral officials formally presented poll returns to him in the capital of Abuja. "Nobody wants to invest in a place ... (where) people fight, kill and destroy."

Jonathan also suspended his interior minister Tuesday, citing "a number of lapses in the political leadership of the ministry."

On Monday, supporters of opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari had set fire to homes of ruling party members in several areas across the north. Police said an angry mob also engineered a prison break.

In the northern town of Kano, Rev. Lado Abdu said three churches had been set ablaze by angry demonstrators. An armed mob at a bus station also threatened another evangelical pastor before a Muslim man nearby spirited him to safety.

"What brought together religion and politics?" Rev. Habila Sunday said in the local Hausa language. "I want to know why when politics happen do they burn churches?"

Thousands have been killed in religious violence in the past decade in Nigeria, which is Africa's most populous nation. But the roots of the sectarian conflict are often embedded in struggles for political and economic dominance.

While Christians and Muslims have shared the same soil in the nation for centuries, the election result showing the Christian president's more than 10 million vote lead over Muslim candidate Muhammadu Buhari spread accusations of rigging in a nation long accustomed to ballot box stuffing.

The unrest is unlikely to subside soon as more elections loom next Tuesday, said Sebastian Boe, an analyst with IHS Global Insight.

"Security forces in the north are unlikely to be able to pacify the region in the coming weeks, particularly as the state governorship and local assembly elections are due to go ahead on 26 April and are likely to rekindle animosity between supporters of rival political parties, as well as further highlighting and exacerbating religious and ethnic divisions," he said.

Jonathan took office last year only after the country's elected Muslim president died from a lengthy illness before his term ended, and many in the north still believe the ruling party should have put up a Muslim candidate instead in this year's election. Monday's violence also was fuelled by the economic despair in Nigeria's arid north.

"The region has the worst unemployment, the most grinding poverty, the poorest education, and the shortest life expectancy of any region of Nigeria," the newspaper Next said Tuesday in an editorial. "So stark and repulsive is the poverty, and so thoroughly alienated have the people become, that even this contested election can be seen as little more than an outlet for the expression of deep-seated grievances."

Nigeria has a long history of violent and rigged polls since it abandoned a revolving door of military rulers and embraced democracy 12 years ago. Legislative elections earlier this month left a hotel ablaze, a politician dead and a polling station and a vote-counting centre bombed in the nation's northeast. However, observers largely said Saturday's presidential election appeared to be fair, with fewer cases of ballot box thefts than previous polls.

Election chairman Attahiru Jega announced results Monday night that showed Jonathan won 22.4 million votes, compared to the 12.2 million votes of his nearest rival, the former military ruler Buhari.

TURKMAN: Less than half of Nigerians are Moslims now because too many Moslims have converted to Christianity or renounced Islam in the aftermath of 9/11. Nigerians are Pro USA and Pro France. Many Moslims could not remain Moslims if they were told that Moslims were at war with USA and the West since they are Tribal Brain people. Nigerians had always voted on Tribal Bases so Moslim Presidential Candidates used to win because Moslims were part of biggest Tribe. After Moslims tried to implement Shriyah Law without permission of the Federal Government in their majority areas in northern Nigeria and had started killing Non Moslims of their own Tribes if they had refused to convert to Islam, Nigerian majority united against Moslims. The Moslim Presidential Candidate got defeated in Elections by the Presidential Candidate of Coalition of smaller Tribes and Non Moslim Dissenters of Tribes that are overwhelmingly Moslim.

[chottala.com] WIKILEAKS EXPOSÉ : Professor Muhammad Yunus

WIKILEAKS EXPOSÉ
Yunus risked Khaleda, Hasina ire
Fri, Apr 22nd, 2011 7:54 pm BdSTyunus-tm2011-04-22-19-54-39.jpg

Dhaka, Apr 22 (bdnews24.com)—Muhammad Yunus did not mind the danger of the possible hostile response that his political ambition could provoke from Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, says a leaked US diplomatic cable.

The cable was sent on Feb 13, 2007 from the U.S. Consulate in Kolkata during Yunus' visit there, two days after the Nobel prize winner had revealed his plans in the Bangladesh media to step into the political maelstrom.

The cable documented in detail the conversation between the US Consul General in Kolkata Henry Jardine and Yunus over lunch when the latter visited Kolkata.

Chennai-based The Hindu newspaper accessed the US diplomatic cables via Wikileaks. The Calcutta Chamber of Commerce (CCC) hosted the luncheon where Jardine enquired about Yunus's political plans.

The 2006 Nobel laureate recognised that he would face a "potentially bruising response" from the 'two ladies' [Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia] and other established political figures."

But he felt that the situation in Bangladesh had reached a critical juncture as "civil war" had only just been averted.

On Feb 11, Yunus had issued an open letter saying that he was seeking support from the pe0ple to launch a political party styled Nagorik Shakti (Citizens' Power).

The announcement came just as the military began a crackdown on political parties, arresting dozens of top leaders on charges of corruption.

In the letter, Yunus asked people to send him their opinions on forming a political party focusing on good governance.
He came in for severe criticism from political parties and rapid aborted his move into politics citing that those who had initially encouraged him lost their enthusiasm.

"Yunus confirmed (consul general Jardine) that he was interested, having supposedly been asked by many people to step-in and overcome the political impasse between the two strongest political leaders, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia," reads the cable.

"CCC President Manoj Mohanka questioned the advisability of Yunus joining the messy world of Bangladesh politics and noted the likelihood of Yunus' reputation being tarnished.

"Yunus quickly responded that he understood the dangers of entering politics but felt that responsible people had to step into the political field to make a real change in Bangladesh, which was wracked by corruption and poor governance.

The 'sacked' Grameen Bank chief was supportive of the imposition of the state of emergency, saying that it had averted a possible civil war.

CRITICAL OF AL'S DEAL

Yunus told the US diplomat he felt that the dominant parties had developed ties with Muslim fundamentalists for political gain even though most Bangladeshis did not favour the extremism.
He was scathing in his remarks on the deal that Awami League had reportedly reached with fundamentalist group Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish (BKM) in Dec 2006.

"Yunus [said] that the agreement was a reflection of the AL's moral bankruptcy and was based on pure political calculus to garner a few additional votes and another example of the need for a new political party (his own party)."

OPENING UP PORTS

Yunus said during the conversation that he was in favour of opening the Chittagong port to regional trade with India, Burma, Bhutan and China.

He added Grameen Bank was considering the possibility of financing a new "mega-port" project in Chittagong to meet the regional demand.

After documenting Yunus's views, the cable concluded that he was "a person of great moral stature and strong organizational skills" and that his candidacy "could offer a possible out from the present Hasina-Zia zero-sum game that cripples Bangladesh's democratic process".

SUBJECT: NOBEL PRIZE WINNER DR. MUHAMMAD YUNUS CONSIDERS ENTERING BANGLADESH POLITICS

1. (SBU) Summary. On February 12, ConGen spoke with Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus about his plans to enter Bangladesh politics. Yunus, on a two-day visit to Kolkata, expressed a strong interest to enter the political fray and said that he was reviewing his options. He expressed support of the present Caretaker Government and its decision to declare a "State of Emergency," saying it had averted a possible civil war. Yunus felt that Muslim fundamentalists represented a fringe and that while the dominant parties had developed ties with fundamentalists for political gain, most Bangladeshis did not favor the extremism. Yunus was also receptive to closer commercial and trade relations with India. Yunus recognized the risk of entering politics and its potential to tarnish his exemplary image. However, even as he professed that he was still considering his options, he indicated a strong intent to plunge into the maelstrom of Bangladesh politics. End Summary.

2. (SBU) As a fellow Bengali, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, received a hero's welcome while participating in two days of programs in Kolkata, West Bengal, from Feb. 11-12. During a lunch hosted by the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce (CCC) for its 175 th anniversary, ConGen spoke with Dr. Yunus about the present political situation in Bangladesh. On February 11, Yunus had issued an open letter saying that he was seeking support from Bangladeshis to launch a political party to reform the violence and corruption in Bangladesh. In the letter, Yunus asked people to send him their opinions on forming a political party focusing on good governance. ConGen asked Yunus was he was intent on entering politics as recently reported. Yunus confirmed that he was interested, having supposedly been asked by many people to step-in and overcome the political impasse between the two strongest political leaders, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia. Yunus added, though, that he was still discussing the merits of becoming a political figure. CCC President Manoj Mohanka questioned the advisability of Yunus joining the messy world of Bangladesh politics and noted the likelihood of Yunus' reputation being tarnished. Yunus quickly responded that he understood the dangers of entering politics but felt that responsible people had to step into the political field to make a real change in Bangladesh, which was wracked by corruption and poor governance.

3. (SBU) ConGen asked Yunus for his views on a recent "Economist" magazine article that described the present Bangladesh Caretaker Government's state of emergency and its support by the Bangladesh military as "The Coup That Dare Not Say Its Name." Yunus was supportive of the imposition of the state of emergency, saying that it had averted a possible civil war. He did not believe that the military's support was significant and added that the Caretaker Government's role was clearly defined under the constitution.

4. (SBU) When asked about the perception in India of the rising fundamentalism in Bangladesh, Yunus said that he saw the Muslim fundamentalists as a fringe not accepted by the Bangladeshi mainstream. ConGen noted, however, that even the Awami League (AL), which had been the primary advocate of a socialist, secular nation, in December had signed an agreement with fundamentalist group Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish (BKM). The agreement with BKM would recognize fatwas issued by Imams and block the introduction of laws contrary to sharia law. Yunus responded that the agreement was a reflection of the AL's moral bankruptcy and was based on pure political calculus to garner a few additional votes and another example of the need for a new political party.

5. (SBU) ConGen asked Yunus about his views on India and whether better trade relations could be developed. Yunus was positive about expanding economic ties with India and within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). He felt that Bangladesh would be receptive to better relations with KOLKATA 00000050 002 OF 002 India but that often it became a divisive political issue, with Bangladeshi politicians stoking resentment against India for political gain. However, he recognized that the GOI maintained significant non-tariff barriers restricting Bangladeshi goods from India's markets. He was favorable to opening Chittagong Port to regional trade with India, Burma, Bhutan and China; but said that the port was presently too small and at full capacity. He added Grameen Bank was considering the possibility of financing a new "mega-port" project in Chittagong to meet the regional demand.

6. (SBU) Comment: Although Dr. Yunus limited himself to saying he was still considering his options, the tenor of his comments indicated a strong to desire to jump into the maelstrom of Bangladeshi politics. He recognized that he would face a potentially bruising response from the "two ladies" and other established political figures, but he felt that the situation in Bangladesh had reached a critical juncture as "civil war" had only just been averted. As a person of great moral stature and strong organizational skills, Yunus' candidacy could offer a possible out from the present Hasina-Zia zero-sum game that cripples Bangladesh's democratic process.

Re: [chottala.com] 16,000 Moslims drowned, trying to reach Europe since 1988

Dear Mr. Turkman

They didn't drown because they were Moslims. It's a pity that human beings drowned, because they wanted to flee from the catastrophy. I'll prefer a caption: 16.000 humane died. We feel for them and their family.

Best wishes

IMMIGRATION: 800 DEAD IN CHANNEL OF SICILY SINCE JANUARY
13 April , 20:06

(ANSAmed) - ROME, APRIL 13 - More than 28,000 migrants reached Italy in less than three months, but many (approximately 800, but there are no official figures, so the number may even be greater) have been swallowed by the Channel of Sicily.

Hundreds of boats departed mostly from Tunisia, but also from Libya, and some sank with their human cargo.

Some 14 shipwrecks have been reported to date, the latest one today: two women drowned in Pantelleria during a landing.

Since 1988, according to figures gathered by Fortress Europe, almost 16,000 men, women and children died trying to reach Europe by boat. For more than 4,000 of them (4,249) the Channel of Sicily became their grave, while another 186 died sailing from Algeria to Sardinia. More than half of these dead bodies have never been recovered: official statistics mentioned 3,110 missing people.

Re: [chottala.com] Dr. Yunus

Actually in Bangladesh news papers column writers are not quality knowledge educated persons to write  quality knowledge articles .

They are not able to think for writing  creative constructive and productive article to teach the people  to make them perfect  work persons to perform their works perfectly in time.

But they are always  writing negative destructive and unproductive article to create destructive and negative  attitudes to the people ..

Muntasir's column also in janakhantha  creating same and was  proved justified  of banning decision by founding father Bangladesh all news papers that published  false news and negative unproductive columns that created negative and destructive attitude among the mind to the people in Bangladesh.

Dear Mr. Mannan,

I suppose any body can get access to the newspaper and read about the content. You always mention that "I reserve my comments to myself. This is just to share with others what Dr. Mamoon has written. I hope he needs to introduction. You may critically analyze whatever he has written but I hope it will be simple critical analysis and not personal attacks. " Since you are keeping a good track anything written about Dr. Yunus, you must have been an expert on him, let's hear your comment.
