I am just trying to understand the historical significances of BAKSAL]

Dear Mr. Syed Aslam,
Though I cannot remember all those in detail about BAKSAL after a long gap of 32/33 years but somehow or other I will recollect from my memory and try to explain its historical significances and probably its motivation. Let me give a brief idea what I really understand about BAKSAL.

BAKSAL was introduced by Bangabandhu at the time when he saw there was no other alternative around him just to give some relief to his Bengali people from a most sirious disastrous condition the country was passing at that time. Femine broke out and that was artficially created by some international circle to create chaos and confusion in the country to put him in a awkward position in his own Bengali Nation, to make him unpopular to his own people. At the same time he saw there were nobody around him who can help him sincerely, advise him properly how he can overcome the crisis. The country was passing a crucial moment at that time.

Everybody especially his own Awami Leagure around him were busy in looting from all side putting him in a more difficult situation. To be very frank he saw complete darkness around him at that time. With extreme frustation one day in one meeting he told "Don't tell me Bangabandhu any more. You have killed Bangabandhu and put him under the grave alive. Different countries are getting the gold mines, copper mines and all sorts of mines , but I got the mines of thieves. In whatever direction I try to see, on my right there is thieves, on my left there is thieves and behind me also there is thieves. On broken heart Bangabandhu was telling how I can run the country surrounded by so many thieves" which he hinted to his own Awami leagures as there was no other party more stronger than his one.

During extreme femine when people are dying of hunger in the street and not getting any type of nutritious food, nutritious biscuits came as an aid from foreign countries just to supply some sorts of nutrition to the poor and needy people free of cost. Later on that biscuits were found to be sold in the street of Calcuuta, West Bengal.

Without seeing any other alternatives and to overcome all these, one day he suddenly declared all party should be abolished and there will be one party only in the name of BAKSAL and except four newspaper all other newspapers were band. We don't know from where he got the idea of one party system in the name of BAKSAL at that time. As bcoz people started thinking a man who fought throughout his life for democracy why suddenly he made one party system in a newly democratic country and finished the democratic system by uprooting it completely. As people were still liking him too much they accepted his decision and wanted to see what may be the after effect of this and wanted to see whether Bangabandhu can overcome the crisis or not.

I was working as Medical Officer in Bangladesh Shipping Corporation at that time and one day as I remember in 1975 when I was in Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Office I was given a BAKSAL membership form to fill it up and to pay 4 anna (siki) as membership fees. People in the whole office became the member of BAKSAL by paying four anna membership fees as compulsary. No question of Ziaur Rahman agreed or not or any other person agreed or not. At that time it was a compulsary process to be a member of BAKSAL. In short this much I can recollect in my memory after a long gap of so many years.

Here I like to request my lerned friends of chottala, if anybody of that period are still present in this chottala groups and if I am wrong in my description to please correct me. I will be more happy if he or she enlighten me by throwing some more lights in this regard.

[chottala.com] Greenspan memoir links Iraq war to US thirst for oil

The fall in US house prices triggered by the subprime credit crisis will likely be bigger than expected, former US Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, seen here March 2007, has warned in an interview published.

Greenspan memoir links Iraq war to US thirst for oil

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, for years an inscrutable seer on the economy, is causing a stir by alleging in his new memoir that "the Iraq war is largely about oil."

Greenspan, who as head of the US central bank was famous for his tight-lipped reserve, is uncharacteristically direct, also accusing President George W. Bush of abandoning Republican principles on the economy.

"I'm saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows -- the Iraq war is largely about oil," he wrote in reported excerpts of "The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World," which is set for release on Monday.

However in an interview with The Washington Post, Greenspan clarified that while securing global oil supplies was "not the administration's motive," it had presented the White House with an opportunity to make the case that removing Saddam Hussein was important for the global economy.

"I was not saying that that's the administration's motive," he said in the interview. "I'm just saying that if somebody asked me, 'Are we fortunate in taking out Saddam?' I would say it was essential."

Greenspan's memoir appears 18 months after he left the Fed, following a career that spanned 1987 to 2006, with the US economy at a crossroads and ahead of a critical central bank meeting under the chairmanship of his successor, Ben Bernanke.

The man dubbed "The Oracle" tells his own tale of nearly two decades at the helm of one of the world's most powerful financial institutions and includes surprising swipes at the Bush administration.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, while explaining his "respect" for Greenspan, rejected the charge that a thirst for crude explained the decision to invade Iraq in March 2003.

"I know the same allegation was made about the Gulf War in 1991, and I just don't believe it's true," he said on ABC television Sunday.

Members of the US Congress, who by a broad majority also voted to authorize the use of military force against Iraq, also dismissed Greenspan's assertion.

"I don't believe that 77 United States senators on a broad, bipartisan basis would have authorized the use of force ... if it was only about oil," Republican senator John Cornyn told CNN.

Greenspan, a lifelong Republican, writes that he advised the White House to veto some bills to curb "out-of-control" spending while the Republicans controlled Congress.

According to The Wall Street Journal, he says that Bush's failure to do so "was a major mistake."

Republicans in Congress, he writes, "swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither."

"They deserved to lose" in the 2006 elections when the Democrats retook control of Congress, he adds.

A speech by the 81-year-old Greenspan is said to command more than 100,000 dollars, and he reportedly earned an 8.5-million-dollar advance from Penguin Press for the book.

In the bombshell memoir, he puts his own spin on the events surrounding the 1987 stock market crash, the bursting of the Internet bubble and the 2001 recession coinciding with the September 11 terror strikes.

In a blog on the online bookstore Amazon.com, Greenspan says he will share details of his childhood in New York, his years as a jazz musician and his friendship with US presidents.

"After years of talking 'Fedspeak' in carefully calibrated congressional testimony, I could finally use my own voice," Greenspan says with uncharacteristic verve.

"I tackled the personal part first, but then started unraveling the detective story about the economy," Greenspan adds in his blog. "What did all the economic shifts we began to detect in the late 90s mean?"

His memoirs are due out just as the institution he led for so many years holds its most anticipated meeting in years.

On Tuesday, investors around the world will be closely watching the Fed for some sign that might help counter the effects of a US mortgage crisis that has rattled markets and led to a credit squeeze.

Greenspan is increasingly being blamed by some for the crisis. By keeping interest rates so low for so long, some argue, he helped foster the real estate bubble behind much of the current woes.

The former Fed chief said the fall in US housing prices triggered by the subprime credit crisis would likely be bigger than expected.

The drop in property prices "is going to be larger than most people expect," Greenspan told the Financial Times, adding that he would not be surprised if the percentage decline in the United States ended up being "in double digits."

Isha Khan - Maligning Bangladesh Liberation & Independence

Dear All

Have you recently read Mr. Isha Khan's postings in this forum
and elsewhere in the web?

More and more the  writer  Mr. Isha Khan is revealing himself as

an ISI operative  in Bangladesh.

Like most big country of the world, India has its Good, Bad and Ugly.

I am here not to defend India or RAW.

Any erudite reader will find that Mr. Isha Khan's  version of the events in

South Asia is  essentially identical with that of notorious ISI of Pakistan.

But, alas, he is not only one in the payrole of ISI. He has  few other cohorts

like Zainal Abedin, Khodeza Begum (probably a pseudonym) & MBI Munshi etc.

Recently Mr, Zainal Abedin received LISA award  from  an organization

headed by  Pakistani  Brigadier Usman Khalid (ISI retd.) for " successfully

spreading"  anti-India propaganda in Bangladesh/

Please read Mr. Isha Khan's  recent Geobbelian malignation of

Independence of Bangladesh below:

(1)  Sheikh Mujib went to Agartala in 1965. The famous Agartala case was

In past we have seen that communalism and anti-Indianism has been used

for narrow partisan politics in Bangladesh. Recently, this kind of

Pakistani-ISI sponsored maneuvers has reached a new height.

The perpetrators  of such ill-motivated criminal  activities must be condemned

and exposed, every time they attempt to do so. These are intended to divert people's

attention from the real issues facing our nation  & create gingoism to achieve Pakistan's

agenda in Bangladesh.

I don't want to go into line-by-line polimics on Mr. Khan;s article.
Readers can judge for themselves who really this Isha Khan is !
