[chottala.com] Grand Gala Ceremony on Software Freedom and Open Content

Sorry, for resending. The previous attempt was partially successful!

Grand Gala Ceremony on Software Freedom and Open Content

The simple but auspicious ceremony with gorgeous announcement marked the event titled "Software Freedom and Open Content" organized by Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN). The programme was held in the Teare Cafe of Liberation War Museum in Dhaka on 12th, May 2008. The programme incorporated the Bangladesh release of Ubuntu 8.04 and Language Movement picture album to WikiCommons. It also included declaration of publication under open licence of picture resources at Centre of Bangladesh Liberation War Studies, the picture of Bir Shreshtho Motiur Rahman and publication of all books by M Zafar Iqbal under open License. The gallant freedom fighter Mahbub Elahi Ranju (Bir Protik), uncovered the cover of the new release of Ubuntu Linux. In his inaugural speech, the freedom fighter expressed his thanks and gratitude to the new generation as they uphold the same spirit of freedom to prepare the nation for the information era.

In her touchy announcement, Ms Milli Rahman, the wife of Bir Shreshtho Motiur Rahman declared that all the pictures and documents of Shaheed Bir Shreshtho Motiur Rahman would now be the property of the humankind. She told that Motiur Rahman fought for the nation's liberation and thus became the property of the nation. She announced with the help from BdOSN that all pictures and associated documents of Bir Shreshtho Motiur Rahman would be published in the Internet under Open License. Major (Retd.) Kamrul Hasana Bhuiyan, Chairman of the Centre for Bangladesh Liberation War Studies announced that the liberation war resources they have collected so far, would be released under same Open License. Prof. Dr Rafiqul Islam, who has released his Language Movement pictures into Wiki Commons earlier, shared his experience of picturing those events. He shared his days at the war camp by Pakistani Janta in 1971 and urged the new generation to continue upholding the spirit of the liberation war. The renowned novelist M Zafar Iqbal declared that from now on, digital version of all of his books will be published in the Internet so that readers around the globe could enjoy his books from anywhere in the world. In a symbolic presentation, he handed over the book "Dipu Number 2" to the General Secretary of BdOSN. Earlier in his welcome speech, Mr Munir Hasan, briefly explained the activity of BdOSN to the audience. He informed the audience that BdOSN is a network of volunteers who work for the liberty of software and information. He said that to have a knowledge based society, we do not have any option other than to adopt open source philosophy. Core member of BdOSN, Ms Lusha Mirza conducted the programme.

RE: [chottala.com] Humour: A B C's of Kolkata

Hi Mac, this was interesting and funny.

Subject: [chottala.com] Humour: A B C's of Kolkata

A MUST READ!

A is for Office. This is where the average Kolkattan goes and spends a day hard(ly) at work. If he is in the Government he will arrive at 10, wipe his forehead till 11, have a tea break at 12, throw around a few files at 12.30, break for lunch at 1, smoke an unfiltered cigarette at 2, break for tea at 3, sleep sitting down at 4 and go home at 5. It's a hard life!

B is for Bhision ('Vision' for the uninitiated). For some reason most of the Bengalis don't have good bhision. In fact in Kolkata most people are wearing spectacles all the time. The effects of this show in the city.

C is for Chappell. This is the Bengali word for the Devil, for the worst form of evil. In the night mothers put their kids to sleep saying 'go to bed, or Chappel will come and take you away.'

D is for Debashish. By an ancient law every fourth Bengali Child has to be named Debashish. So you have a Debashish everywhere and tying to get creative they are also called Deb, Debu, Deba with variations like Debnath and Deboprotim thrown in.

E is for Eeesh. This is a very common Bengali exclamation made famous by Aishwarya Rai in the movie Devdas. It is estimated that on an average a Bengali uses eeesh 10,089 times every year. (That's counting eeesh and other eeesh-ish words).

F is for Feesh. These are creatures that swim in rivers and seas and are a favourite food of the Bengalis. Despite the fact that a fish market has such strong smells, with one sniff a Bengali knows if a fish is all right. If not he will say 'eeesh what feeesh is theesh!'

G is for Good name. Every Bengali boy will have a good name like Debashish or Deboprotim and a pet name like Shontuda, Chonti, and Dinku. While every Bengali Girl will be Paromita or Protima as well as Shampa, Champa and Tuki. Basically your nickname is there to kiil your good name.

H is for Harmonium. The Bengali equivalent of a rock guitar. Take four Bengalis and a Harmonium and you have the successors to The Bheatles!

I is for lleesh. This is a feeesh with 10,000 bones which would kill any ordinary person, but which the Bengalis eat with releeesh!

J is for Jhola. No self-respecting Bengali is complete without his Jhola. It is a shapeless cloth bag where he keeps all his belongings and he fits an amazing number of things in. Even as you read this there are 2 million jholas bobbling around Kolkata- and they all look exactly the same!

K is for Kee Kando. It used to be the favourite Bengali exclamation till eeesh took over because of Aishwarya Rai (now Kee Kando's agent is trying to hire Bipasha Basu).

L is for Lungi. People in Kolkata manage to play football and cricket wearing it. Now there is talk of a lungi expedition to Mt. Everest.

M is for Minibus. These are dangerous half buses whose antics would effortlessly frighten the living daylights out of Formula 1 race drivers.

N is for Nangtoe. This is the Bengali word for Naked. It is the most interesting naked word in any language!

O is for Oil. The Bengalis believe that a touch of mustard oil will cure anything from cold (oil in the nose), to earache (oil in the ear), to cough (oil on the throat) to piles (oil you know where!)

P is for Phootball. This is always a phavourite phassion of the Kolkattan. Every Bengali is born an expert in this game. The two biggest clubs there are Mohunbagan and East Bengal and when they play the city comes to a stop.

Q is for Queen. This really has nothing to do with the Bengalis or Kolkata, but it's the only Q word I could think of at this moment. There's also Quilt but they never use them in Kolkata.

R is for Rabi Thakur. Many years ago Rabindranath got the Nobel Prize. This allows everyone in Kolkata to frame their acceptance speeches and walk with their head held high and look down at Delhi and Mumbai!

S is for Sardarjee whom Bengalis are very envious of because he is born with a semi-monkey cap on.

T is for Trams. Hundred years later there are still trams in Kolkata. Of course if you are in a hurry it's faster to walk.

U is for Ambrela. When a Bengali baby is born they are handed one.

V is for Violence. Bengalis are the most non-violent violent people around. When an accident happens they will shout and scream and curse and abuse, but the last time someone actually hit someone was in 1979.

W is for Water. For three months o f the year the city is underwater and every year for the last 200 years the authorities are taken by surprise by this!

X is for X mas. It's very big in Kolkata, with Park Street fully lit up.

Y is for Yastarday. Which is always better than today for a Bengali.

Z is for Jeebra, Joo, Jip and Jylophone.

Obama takes the lead in superdelegate count

(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama has surpassed Sen. Hillary Clinton in the race for superdelegates, according to CNN's latest count.

Obama on Monday picked up four new superdelegate endorsements: Rep. Tom Allen of Maine, Dolly Strazar of Hawaii, Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Keith Roark of Idaho.

"Most of the primary voters across the nation have now spoken. It is time to bring a graceful end to the primary campaign," Allen said.

"We now need to unify the Democratic Party and focus on electing Sen. Obama and a working majority in the United States Senate. That is how we can change the direction of the country," said Allen, who is also a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

He said Obama and Clinton are both "supremely qualified to be president."

Obama released a statement praising Allen's record, saying, "I'm thrilled to be working alongside him in this critical election, and I look forward to working with him as president."

Strazar said in a statement that she felt it her duty to let the campaign process play out before publicly committing to a candidate.

"I am now convinced that it is time to pull together behind a single candidate who has the backing of a growing number of Americans. I therefore announce my wholehearted endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama," she said.

Akaka said Obama "is the antidote we need to cure Washington of the uninspired, partisan politics that has plagued our country far too long."

Roark, who is chairman of the Idaho Democratic Party, said his decision follows "several months of careful consideration."

"Democrats are blessed to have two outstanding candidates vying for our party's nomination at this defining moment in American history. I have no doubt that Sen. Obama will run the stronger race," he said in a statement.

With the endorsements, Obama now leads in the race for superdelegates, 277 to Clinton's 273.

At the beginning of the year, Clinton led the superdelegate race by more than 100.

Superdelegates are party leaders and officials who will vote for the candidate of their choice at the Democratic convention in August.

The focus of the Democratic race has largely turned to the superdelegates because they outnumber the remaining pledged delegates that are up for grabs.

Obama has a comfortable lead in overall delegates, 1,869 to Clinton's 1,697.

The Democrats next face off Tuesday in West Virginia, where Clinton is expected to win by big margins.

Her campaign is renewing the argument that if she leads in the popular vote, she should be the Democratic nominee.

"Hillary is within striking distance of winning the popular vote nationwide -- a key part of our plan to win the nomination," campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said in a letter to supporters Sunday.

"That means we need every last vote we can get in West Virginia on Tuesday and in the races to follow."

Her campaign is trying to turn out the vote in the remaining six contests, hoping the popular vote argument will persuade superdelegates to endorse her instead of Obama.

Clinton's campaign has argued that she would be more electable in a general election because she has done well in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as Florida and Michigan, which were stripped of their delegates.

West Virginia is also a key swing state. Bill Clinton won in 1992 and 1996, and George Bush carried it in 2000 and 2004.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, an uncommitted superdelegate, said the delegate numbers are in Obama's favor, but the popular vote is important to the people of his state. Video Watch what Manchin says about Tuesday's contest »

"I think we see what happened in 2004, when Al Gore won the popular vote, and where the country has gone and the feelings toward government since then. I put a lot of stock in that," he said on CNN's "American Morning."

"If the people believe that it was over, they wouldn't be voting maybe in the way they might vote tomorrow or in the next few campaigns," he said.

Clinton is expected to trounce Obama in West Virginia, but Manchin said he thinks Obama would also be able to carry the state in the general election.

The senator from New York has a 43-percentage-point advantage over Obama, 66 percent to 23 percent, according to a survey from the American Research Group released Friday.

The poll was conducted after last Tuesday's contests and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Following Obama's double digit win in North Carolina and Clinton's narrow victory in Indiana, party leaders have suggested Clinton has reached the end of her campaign.

But Clinton has vowed to stay in the race until someone gets enough delegates to clinch the nomination.

Just 28 delegates are up for grab in West Virginia.

Still, Clinton is campaigning hard there, with stops scheduled Monday in Montgomery, Clear Fork, Logan and Fairmont.

Obama has an event scheduled in Charleston and is then expected to travel to Kentucky for a rally in Louisville.

Abuse of female student: Punishment of DU teacher demanded

Dhaka University students brought out a procession
on the campus yesterday demanding exemplary punishment to Dr
Kamal Uddin, a teacher of Psychology Department, for alleged
sexual harassment of a female student. Focus Bangla

DU Correspondent

A number of students of Dhaka University under the banner of general students staged a demonstration on the campus yesterday demanding exemplary punishment to a teacher for reportedly harassing one of his female students sexually.

But the students were chased by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists, while they were going to the Proctor's office to submit a memorandum demanding punishment of the teacher.

Being afraid of the attack by BCL activists, the students started running helter-skelter in the Arts Building, while the female students were seen crying for their safety.

Later, the group set fire to a banner 'New dormitory wanted to reduce residence problem' of another student group, Chhatra Mukti.

Sources said the guardians of the female student earlier submitted a written allegation against Dr Kamal Uddin, Associate Professor of Psychology Department, to the Vice-Chancellor office in this regard. But the university authority did not take any action in this connection, the sources added.

The VC office sources said a group of teachers were trying to hush up the incident though similar allegation was brought against him by another female student a few years ago.

[chottala.com] What a special editorial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

কোথায় তাজমহল আর কোথায় চকির তল  ?
কোথায়  রহমান আর  কোথায়  খান ?

See the editorial below that makes me laugh . What a special editorial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
