What if the 'people' don't want democracy?

Sarmila Bose

ALJAZEERA – February 20, 2012

Libyans would be interested to know that across the five South Asian countries, two-thirds of respondents also expressed a yearning for the rule of a "strong leader who does not have to bother about elections". There was also an astonishingly high level of support for the option of military rule, even in India. In Pakistan and Bangladesh, who have both experienced military rule (and hence know its negatives), 60 per cent of respondents endorsed military rule. Even in India, which prides itself in never having allowed the army to venture out of civilian government control in more than sixty years, 23 per cent of respondents approved of army rule. The higher the level of education, the lower was the support for military rule, but as illiterate respondents across the five countries registered a high of 57 per cent support for military rule, even after falling off significantly with levels of education, 22 per cent of those who were graduates and post-graduates were still endorsing military rule.

[chottala.com] Indian BSF cocktail party on Pilkhana Massacre Day!

Indian BSF cocktail party on Pilkhana Massacre Day!

by News Desk
February 17, 2012

On February 25-26, when Bangladesh will mourn the third anniversary of the tragic Pilkhana Massacre, which took place during February 25-26 in 2009, weeks after Bangladesh Awami League formed government, India's Border Security Forces [BSF] has organized a cocktail party following by cultural performance. Family members of those Indian BSF members, who were killed at Padua during exchange of fire with members of Bangladesh Riffles [now Bangladesh Border Guard], are also expected to attend this "celebration" by BSF officers and jawans. According to information, more than twelve hundred people will attend this night-long cocktail party, which starts at 12 midnight on Friday [February 24]. Though reason behind holding of this cocktail party is still unclear, several sources indicate that the Indian BSF officers and soldiers will be holding this cocktail party in celebration of a "proper revenge" to Padua incident, where a few of BSF members were killed.

February 25 is just a week ahead! On this day in 2009, just a month after Bangladesh Awami League formed government, anti-army revolt broke out inside the Head Quarters of Bangladesh Riffles [now Bangladesh Border Guards]. At least 73 army officers were brutally murdered during this mutiny, while a large number of family members of the army officers were humiliated, assaulted and violated by the renegades. Right after the incident, a number of officers expressed their anger in presence of the Prime Minister at the Sena Kunja meeting. They demanded neutral and prompt investigation as well punishment of the culprits.

Government did not allow the members of armed forces and other law enforcing agencies to storm into the Bangladesh Riffles headquarters to rescue the army officers and their family members who were made hostage inside the headquarters of the border security guard by the 'renegade' troops. Instead of allowing army crackdown, the government opted for 'political settlement' of the situation and sent two of the junior leaders of the ruling party to negotiate with the mutineers. In the name of political negotiation, these junior leaders and later many other figures in the government spent almost 32 hours, thus giving opportunity to the mutineers in killing almost all the army officers who were held hostage inside the headquarters of the border security force and violated large number of female members of their families who were also held inside the BDR headquarters.

Many believe that the Pilkhana Massacre was pre set by anti-Bangladesh elements with a blue print of destabilizing Bangladesh's border security forces as well as decade-old glory of Bangladesh Riffles, with the aim of turning Bangladesh ultimately into a sub-servient like some small nations in the region. It is also apprehended that, anti-Bangladesh elements had hands behind the Pilkhana Massacre.

Commenting on the news of BSF's cocktail party on the Pilkhana Massacre Day, a retired senior officer of Bangladesh Army expressed annoyance at such "audacity" of the Indian border guards. He said, "such celebration categorically expose the nasty faces of the conspirators behind the murders of our army officers and humiliation of their family members at Pilkhana in 2009."

[chottala.com] Jamal at Harvard and US-Senate

Dear Friends,

We are blessed to share news that our son Jamal Khan has completed half of
his three years term at Harvard Law School. He is scheduled to graduate
from Harvard in May 2013 with JD (Doctor of Jurisprudence), Insha Allah.

When Jamal went to the week-long orientation at Harvard in August of 2010,
I attended the orientation with him. In one of the evenings, all the new
students assembled in the biggest auditorium of the Harvard campus. Then
the Dean of Harvard Law School came onto the stage and gave an inspiring
lecture addressing all the incoming law students. Here are a few of her
comments from that speech:

1) If you are still wondering where you are. Let me tell you that you are
now at Harvard !!!...
2) We searched all over the world to find you...
3) From this stage that I am speaking to you tonight, such and such
Presidents of USA, Martin Luther King Jr, and such and such other
National heroes and figures spoke from this stage...

Over the summer of 2011, Jamal had an opportunity to work at the US Senate
in Washington DC as a Summer Intern. A copy of Jamal's photograph with
Senator Carl Levin is included here. Senator Carl Levin is the Chairman of
the Armed Services Committee and a senior member of the Homeland Security
Committee. Jamal also participated in the Muslim Public Service Network
program in Washington DC. The program held a banquet in the Capitol Visitor
Center, which was attended by Congressman Keith Ellison and other
politically active Muslims. Jamal spoke a few remarks at the banquet about
the important role of Muslim youth in the future of America. We are
delighted that- through Jamal's new exposure to the political atmosphere in
DC- he will continually challenge his potential to open new doors in which
he can grow individually as well as impact society in a positive light.

It is through Jamal's passion for law that has driven him to endure his
academic pursuits as a committed and hard-working student. We hope his
aspirations to attain higher knowledge will continue to pave the way and be
an inspiration to surpass one's own imagination for what is possible.

Here are the descriptions of the 5 photographs included here:

1) Jamal is speaking at the US-Capitol in Washington DC, during the Muslim
Public Service Network (MPSN) program and banquet, about the important role
of Muslim youths in the future of America. (2011)
2) Jamal with US Senator Carl Levin in Washington DC. (2011)
3) Jamal at Harvard campus with father Dr. Mahbub Khan. (2010)
4) Jamal at Harvard campus with sisters Madhury and Monika. (2010)
5) Jamal with US-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. (2009)

Please pray for Jamal.

Dear Friends,

We are profoundly humbled that our son Jamal has received an admission
offer from Harvard Law School for JD (Doctor of Jurisprudence) in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Jamal is the third of our four children
(Madhury, Kamal, Jamal and Monika).

We are very grateful to Allah (swa) for this monumental gift for Jamal, for
our family, for our friends, and for our community. We are also very
thankful to those of our family members, extended family members, friends
and community members, who have encouraged Jamal and helped Jamal in
various ways, over the years, to attain this goal, which has been a dream
of Jamal since childhood.

Harvard wrote to Jamal in the offer letter as follows:

We are thrilled to welcome you to this incredible institution! We believe
that this is the single best place in the world to study law……..

Jamal released this information last month during the Eid/Thanksgiving
weekend in San Jose, California, to his immediate family members, with his
elder sister Madhury on speakerphone from New York. This news resulted in
an outburst of strong emotions and joy. This also resulted in an
instantaneous group hug to Jamal from his family members, which
transformed into tears of happiness. The next morning, Madhury sent text
message to Jamal from New York: "I couldn't sleep last night cuz I was so
excited!" She was very happy for her baby brother.

Jamal is now waiting for responses from other schools he applied to.
However, Harvard seems to be Jamal's first choice at this time.

We have no end of gratefulness and thankfulness for this grand gift in our
lives.

Jamal was identified as a GATE student early on, like all of his siblings.
(GATE = Gifted And Talented Education).

Jamal was the high school Valedictorian, while his siblings were also
Valedictorian in all or most of the schools.

Jamal also received the Presidential Award from the US-President, like all
of his siblings.

Jamal graduated as the Valedictorian of his High School. He achieved Junior
Standing (3rd year equivalent) by the end of his first semester at
UC-Berkeley, because of AP course credit and community college courses he
took during his High School years. In four years, Jamal finished the Majors
in Economics, Political Science, and Rhetoric, and a Minor in Global
Poverty and Practice. He graduated from Berkeley with High Honors in
Economics and High Distinction in General Scholarship.

Jamal earned several distinct Awards, Honors, and Scholarships. He received
the national Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, and also the Berkeley CalBears
Scholarship. He was invited for membership into the Phi Beta Kappa Honors
Society. During his Junior year, Jamal was selected by the Berkeley
Political Science Department to receive the Travers Scholarship in Politics
and Ethics. This Award is "intended to give recognition and encouragement
to outstanding undergraduate students who plan to serve their country or
community in an elected or non-elected government capacity sometime in the
future." He took a Graduate Level course in Political Science during his
Senior Year. For his Senior Honors Thesis in Economics, Jamal did
statistical analysis of Government data to look at American immigrant
assimilation trends.

Jamal also did some extracurricular activities outside the classroom during
his time at UC-Berkeley:

1) Intern for Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi
in San Francisco, CA. (A photograph of Jamal with the House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi is attached here).

2) Tata International Social Entrepreneurship Scheme (TISES) Fellow in
Gujarat, India. Worked for 8 weeks with farmers in rural village of India
in a Community Development Partnership between UC-Berkeley, Cambridge
University, and Tata International.

3) Intern for nonprofit organization MAPLight.org in Berkeley, CA.
Looked at connections between big campaign donations and specific votes in
Congress.

4) Intern for Law Practice in San Francisco

5) Assistant for the Disabled Students Program at UC Berkeley

6) Research Assistant for a Rhetoric Professor

Jamal's LSAT Score was in the 99th Percentile nationwide. (LSAT - Law
School Admission Test). Previously in high school, he scored perfect 800 on
the SAT Verbal and SAT II Writing Exams for Undergraduate Admission (SAT =
Scholastic Aptitude Test).

Jamal memorized the 30th Parah of the holy Qur'an, and with the blessings
of Allah (swt) is able to recite with beautiful Tajweed.

Jamal is very modest, and he clearly displays, even at this young age, that
he is a scholar and an intellectual. He is a delight of our family. Jamal
is happy, jolly, kind, thoughtful, humble, and he is very respectful to
others. When our four kids meet and they get into intense and happy
conversations, Reena and I get no chance to speak, but to watch their
jubilance with all of our happiness.

Jamal is an inspiration for the youths and kids of our community and
beyond, and he is a good role model for them as well.

Once again, we have no end of thankfulness for this grand gift in our lives.

Please pray for Jamal.

With best regards,

Reena and Mahbub Khan

Bangladesh bans 'Banglish' to protect local tongue

By Shafiq Alam | AFP –  Fri, Feb 17, 2012
A Bangladesh court has outlawed the use of English slang known as "Banglish" on television and radio stations, a move welcomed by experts who worry about a foreign invasion of their language.
The High Court issued the order on Thursday "to uphold the sanctity of our mother tongue" and stop the "rape" of Bengali and its 1,000-year past, a state prosecutor said.
The history of Bengali, which is spoken by at least 250 million people on the subcontinent, is wrapped up with the creation of Bangladesh as a country in 1971.
The deeply impoverished nation was previously part of Pakistan and its independence movement was fuelled partly by the attempt by Pakistani administrators to impose Urdu as the state language.
The head of the Bangla Academy, a state-run institution that publishes books and conducts research on Bengali, said the verdict was "long overdue".
"These FM radios and televisions were creating a strange language and almost destroyed the dynamics of our beautiful mother tongue," Shamsuzzaman Khan told AFP.
"It is a timely order. It will save our language from destruction. We have already seen how the Filipino language lost its glory due to the imposition of American English," he said.
The court order comes just days before the country celebrates the 60-year anniversary of the Language Movement, a protest in which half a dozen students were shot dead as they protested Pakistan's move to impose Urdu.
Dozens of private television stations and radio stations that feature music and talk-shows directed at teenagers and people in their twenties have sprouted in Bangladesh over the last five or six years.
Use of "Banglish" in which Bengali and English words are mixed seamlessly together is widespread, as is "Hinglish" in India -- a combination of Hindi and English.
"The court has ordered them not to use words which are foreign to our language," deputy attorney general Altaf Hossain told AFP.
"It asked them not to broadcast or anchor programmes using distorted Bengali language or pronounce Bengali words in a distorted form," he said.
The court said this distortion of the language was tantamount to "rape", Hossain said, adding it had also ordered a committee to be set up to oversee how the language should be used by broadcasters.
Several students who spoke to AFP on Friday broadly welcomed the move as a wake-up call that would make them more aware of the importance of preserving Bengali, but none seemed to think "Banglish" would disappear.
"It sounds good and it's something different. This one of the reasons why FM radios are becoming popular," Jion, a 22-year-old student of Dhaka University, told AFP.
"A lot of people also hate this because they can't accept change. People who are fans of classic Bengali writers like Rabindranath Tagore, they won't like it," he added.
The court order followed a newspaper commentary piece entitled "Language pollution is as deadly as river pollution" by English language professor and Bengali fiction writer Syed Manjurul Islam on Thursday.
Professor Islam told AFP that he was concerned about the role the FM radios and television stations played in creating a language that was completely foreign to Bengali.
"I am a teacher and I can see everyday how these youths were distorting the language. Because of these stations, they are now talking in a language that's not Bengali. They can't even talk or write properly in Bengali," he said.
"I am greatly concerned. They are turning Bengali into a street language. It's like a developer constructing a building by uprooting the grave of his forefathers," he said.
Sabbir Hasan, a radio jockey at private Radio Today, also welcomed the verdict, but said the media was not the only one to blame.
"I understand the intention is to uphold the sanctity of our language, for which our students gave their lives," he said in a reference to the pre-independence protesters.
"But the reality is not only the media is responsible. Our young generation likes to talk this way, mixing English words in Bangla sentences. The tendency is more rampant in upper class people and private university students.
"Upper class people think it gives them status," he said.
