Re: [chottala.com] 1/11 has helped us to know the opportunists

Hi Mr Poet & Writter

Your thoughtful expression does not bring any quality thought idea,.

Mr Jillur Rahman & Mr Khondakhar Delwar Hossain are the real not real politicians are the family servant politicians. They are not doing politics for the common people of Bangladesh but they  are doing private services for the interest of their leaders.

Mr writter you should know that 1/11 has given the chances to the honest politicians to do honest politics for establishing lawful democracy & lawful honest administration in Bangladesh..

Hello Everybody,

I am happy to inform you that my Bengalee book "Ami Bangladesher Dalal Bolchi" originally published by Somoy Prokashon in 2002 is now available online at http://www.bdagent.blogspot.com/.

The articles, commentaries and debate were written between 1995 to 1999 in perhaps the most tumultuous phase of my life and therefore those that haven't read my Bengalee writing before may find some of the contents, shocking, abrasive, combative, and even extremely bruising in some respect. But that is the way life is and I have always believed in my conviction, and have often been convicted for my belief. It is also very important that one should live his life on his own terms and on his own choosing, otherwise life as such because totally useless...worthless.

As has been many ironies in my life, so has been this book. Despite it being received favorably by readers, specially the young who are inspired and intelligent and after brisk business, the book disappeared from shelves. For reason unknown the book is proscribed in Bangladesh and the publisher despite my many request over the years never re-published the same. There were no reviews of this book, no critique and the SILENCE from our mainstream media was in one word DEAFENING!

Life is really too short to harp back on the past and I thus decided that this book should be available online. Perhaps now is the right time because so many Bengalee speakers have access to the Internet in Bangladesh and millions overseas. I eagerly look forward to your reactions either through comments in the Blog or via email.

One last word, please go to the right scroll bar of the Blog and click on the links, thereafter click on the Bengalee pages (scanned in the jpg format) for enlargements.

Thanking You

Re: [chottala.com] Asking to Mr. Jillur Rahman

Asking to Mr. Jillur Rahman

You are telling in the BAL activists hunger meeting that you will not participate in election  & will do every thing  DOORBAR mass movement activities such as burning closing destroying works for making fall this CTG.

Can you tell the nation after making fall this CTG who will come in power without out election??

Have you understanding Clear Idea??

All political activists are advised to think for selecting Madam Matia Chowdhury

The next Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

"It is seen that quality less educated persons are inefficient & worthless ".

It is also observed that among the political leaders including BAL leaders Madam Matia Chowdhury is really honest & dedicated efficient leader.

So for the greater interest of the nation she should be considered & be selected for the Post of next Bangladesh Prime Minister.

we have seen the  ability of so called educated doctors. they failed us more than the uneducated begums.

If they were capable, then situation in bangladesh would improve slowly but steadily.

but over the  last fifften months, the situation has become worse due to their wrong treatment because these so called doctors have no experience but theoritical knowledge. They don't know what  is the condition of the patient, what treatment is suitable for them under present condition.

Due to their wrong treatment the condition of the patient, Bangladesh has deteriorated , like Rasheda Mohiuddin.

So these so callled educated doctors  must be  bring under trial for the wrong treatment of Bangladesh , without legitimate authority and enough experience and swrong attitude of ion of "jack of all"

Not only these doctors but also those so called educated people who still want these failed , inexperienced  doctors do experiemnt on bangladesh should also  be given due punishment.

Dear All,

We can play blame game all day and night but the real truth is that Bangladesh Industrial sector is verge of collapse due to rampant corruption and inaction of previous Govts for the last 36 years.  We can argue why CTG can't provide the service since they are driving corruption from Bangladesh.  The answer is that there needs 3-5 years planning and implementation process to bring a real change in Bangladesh in the power sector.

Our uneducated Begums with no vision to promote Bangladesh to install Gas exploration, building more power plants and rampant corruption has eat Bangladesh future and this is just the beginning of their ill advised Governments.

I also think that CTG will not able to deliver lots of wish-list since they have lack of public support now.  So this the beginning of worst future unless a drastic change is initiated now and we will able to pull off in the next 3 years regardless who is in power except those king and Queen of corruption in Bangladesh.

Industrial sectors on the verge of collapse due to power crisis

Friday May 02 2008 23:31:05 PM BDT

The industrial sector of the country is on the verge of collapse as ongoing power and gas crisis is worsening day by day.Increasing short fall in power and gas supply is posing a serious threat to the existence of the country's industrial sectors specially the export-oriented ones.(UNB)

There is growing apprehension that the country will face a disastrous situation in the spheres of export trades and employment if the government fails to improve power and gas supply soon through bringing the situation under control.

Due to year-long economic recession in the country, unstable circumstances are prevailing in the country's all sectors specially the industrial sector. As a result, some industries have already been added to the list of the bankrupt enterprises.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manu-facturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) sources said, power and gas crisis is mainly hampering the production in this sector. Around 9 lakh people are working in some 1,600 knitwear factories in Dhaka and adjacent districts.

The industry is experiencing a serious short fall in production due to recent power crisis in the country. The knit factories remain inoperative half of the day for want of electricity. Hours-long power failure results in serious production short fall while frequent disruption to electric and gas supply is causing more financial loss to this industry.

Talking to The Bangladesh Today, Dr. Atiar Rahman said, the country is likely to suffer from power crisis in the near future as there is no possibility to improve electricity supply overnight. No short-term step will help to overcome the crisis. Long-term measures should be taken in this regard.

Unfortunately, there is no government decision regarding power crisis. Besides, panic is persisting in the business community. So, no one is coming forward to invest in any sector including power industry, Atiar said, adding the government should formulate policy immediately in order that the private entrepreneurs invest in power sector.

Due to frequent power supply disruption, the producers cannot ensure high standards of their products in one hand and the entrepreneurs fail to supply goods to the foreign buyers timely on the other. To overcome the situation, the industry-owners are depending on generators to continue production. But for the want of adequate gas supply, the generators remain inoperative almost all the time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ARTHUR GIANELLI ANNOUNCES OPENING OF ZAKI HOSSAIN CENTER FOR HYPERTENSION, DIABETES AND VASCULAR DISEASE AT NUMC, ADVANCING THE CARE OF NASSAU COUNTY RESIDENTS, PARTICULARLY THE MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AND UNINSURED, WHO SUFFER FROM THE INTERTWINED EPIDEMICS OF HYPERTENSION, DIABETES AND VASCULAR DISEASE

COMBINATION OF OUTREACH, EDUCATION AND CLINICAL CARE WILL GREATLY BENEFIT OUT PATIENTS WHO SUFFER FROM VARIOUS METABOLIC CONDITIONS BY COMPLETE AND TIMELY ACCESS TO CLINICAL SERVICES AND PREVENTION CARE PROGRAM, WITH NUMC'S INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES AS A SIGNIFICANT PARTNER

ZHCHDVD, THANKS TO ZAKI HOSSAIN'S GENEROSITY, TO BE HUB OF CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, TO ACT AS A PARTNER AND RESOURCES FOR PHYSICIANS IN THE COMMUNITY AND TO DEVELOP INTERCONNECTED ACTIVITIES WITH OTHER RELEVANT NUMC SPECIALITIES SUCH AS OPHTHALMOLOGY,  NEPHROLOGY, CARDIOLOGY, NEUROLOGY, ENDOCRINOLOGY, AND PODIATRY

East Meadow, NY…..Joined by Martin Payson, Chair of the Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC) Board of Directors, state, county officials, philanthropist Zaki Hossain and Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) staff, Arthur Gianelli, President/CEO of the NHCC, announced the opening of the Zaki Hossain Center for Hypertension, Diabetes and Vascular Disease at NUMC, advancing the care of Nassau County residents, particularly the medically underserved and uninsured who suffer from the intertwined epidemics of hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease.

"We are grateful that, through Mr. Zaki Hossain's generous gift, we will be able to provide much needed services to our many vulnerable outpatients who rely on us for detection, treatment and chronic management of these three ailments, hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease, all severely impacting our medically underserved and uninsured patient populations of Nassau County. Without the generosity of benefactors such as Mr. Hossain, we simply would not be able to build the kind of projects needed for the benefit of our patients," stated Mr. Gianelli.  "Through a combination of outreach, education and clinical care, our patients who suffer from various metabolic conditions, can avoid complications
that can result from these three conditions and can greatly benefit by complete and timely access to clinical sources and prevention care program with NUMC's Institute for Healthcare Disparities as a significant partner."

The ZHCHDVD will have clinical operations dedicated to the care of metabolic diseases with dedicated staff to ensure a patient's continuum of care, priority of conditions and routine follow-up visits without restricting their access to care. The center, built at a cost of $2.6M funded from the proceeds of the Nassau County Tobacco Securitization Program, provides eight exam rooms, several consultation and conference rooms and two waiting are lounges.

Steve Walerstein, MD, Senior VP for Medical Affairs and Medical Director for the NHCC added: "We envision the ZHCHDVD to be the hub of clinical and educational activities, to act as a partner and resources for physicians in the community and to develop interconnected activities with other relevant NUMC specialties such as ophthalmology, neurology and podiatry." At the center, specialists in nephrology, cardiology, endocrinology and vascular surgery will evaluate patients.  For the most part, these clinical encounters will serve as consultations for patients managed in the community, particularly in the Nassau Health Care Corporation's Community Health Centers. Aloysius Cuyjet, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Disparities at NUMC stated: "It is well documented that certain population groups have increased rates of diabetes and hypertension and go undiagnosed leading to other symptomatic conditions.  Promoting diabetes and hypertension control through education and screening is the best preventive medicine that can be applied."

Kenneth Hupart, MD, Director of the Division of Endocrinology at NUMC stated:  "NUMC diabetes related health care services for the underserved communities of Nassau County, with as few as 26,000 and as many as 38,000 residents within NUMC's primary and secondary areas currently living with diabetes.  Through our Diabetes Center of Excellence,
we will improve access to health care for patients with diabetes, identify patients with diabetes earlier in the course of their disease and promote aggressive treatment and education to patients with the goal of reducing diabetes related morbidity and mortality.

Glenn Faust, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery at NUMC added: "Screening for vascular disease is very important as this can be a silent killer leading to complications such as cardiac disease, hypertension, kidney disease or lipid disorders.  Our center uses a multidisciplinary, one stop shopping approach, with specialists using a coordinated management plan tailored to patients' individual needs."

Mr. Hossain, upon being recognized for his generosity, stated: "My family and I are honored to provide financial support for such an important initiative that will advance the care of Nassau County residents, particularly benefiting those who suffer from the intertwined epidemics of hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease."

Mr. Gianelli concluded by adding: "Philanthropic gifts such as Mr. Hossain's are vital for institutions that rely on governmental funding for capital projects. Mr. Hossain has been a benefactor and a good friend to NUMC.  We look forward to developing a long-term relationship with him to support our fundraising initiatives to better serve our patients through clinical intervention programs."

[chottala.com] Why I Am Never Going Back To America

Why I Am Never Going Back To America

May 10, 2003
By Zeba Khan, US Citizen
A Thoughtful Article By A Sister For The Parents In America.

I may be an American citizen, but that's not my fault. I ask the
reader to please forgive me that much and continue with the rest of
the article. As a consequence of having been born, raised, and college
educated in the States, I have gora-saab Urdu, a severe allergy to
mosquito bites and a blue passport, but again, that's not my fault.

Often at parties, mostly at weddings, people (with sons my age who
eat, drink, and dream in red, white and blue) will slyly ask whether
or not I have plans of returning. I say no, not at all, not unless
pigs fly, hell freezes over, and the Cubs win the World Series, all on
the same day.

Then they ask me why, and I can never answer them. I'm ashamed to, and
the reason why is because the true nature of American society is
obscene, and Islamic Taboos are often rites of Passage back in God
Bless America. The sins that Americans proudly broadcast are so fahosh
(obscene!) that I cannot mention them in mixed company in more than a
whisper. But luckily I can type though, and here, dear readers, dear
sly aunties, dear people who think I'm insane, is why I'm never going
back to the US.

America is famous for turning out highly qualified doctors and
engineers, and I will not insult their universities and colleges. The
Ivy League universities offer the best education that money can
buy...in an environment where 90% of all on-campus rape cases are
linked to alcohol and approximately 240,000 to 360,000 of the nation's
12 million current undergraduates will ultimately die from
alcohol-related causes. (Stats from SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration website)

But like I said, I'm not going to slander institutions where illicit
affairs betweens professors and students are common enough to be part
of campus life. It's a lovely collegiate society where emergency
phones with blue light beacons are installed every 100 or so feet on
college grounds to curb crime and sexual assault. I said I wouldn't
slander the colleges, and I'm not. To slander something is to lie, to
demean it with incorrect information, and I'm doing neither.
Everything I've mentioned is true blue (and white, and red) and 100%
certifiable by anyone who has been to college in any major city like
Chicago.

Enough about college, let's go further back to public high school.
I'll tell you no lies here, either. The state of Illinois has mandated
a health and safety class for all students, and the class is taught to
grade 9. The safety part of the class curriculum includes driver's
education. The health part of the class involves skin care, fitness,
how to use a condom, how to recognize transmitted diseases in your
sexual partner and why, if you decide you're a homosexual; it's ok to
feel that way.

I was blessed, truly blessed by Allah that I was absent the day that
my teacher showed a live video of a woman giving birth, the natural
way, in the nude, in stirrups. This all-natural, all-nude video was
shown in front of my mixed 9th grade class, it was shown to both the
boys and the girls at the same time. I heard horror stories the next
day from my fellow miserable Muslimahs.

I, and hundreds of thousands of other young Muslims who were
unfortunate enough to be educated in the US, was taught that being gay
(Hijra!) is quite normal. Never mind the two girls sitting outside the
class window kissing each other with open mouths - they're exercising
their right of choice. Homosexuality is not a deviation, it's a
lifestyle, and a rather trendy one at that.

Hooray for gay-rights and the yearly gay-pride parades held in most
major cities of the US. If you're fortunate enough not to know what a
gay-pride parade is, allow me to ruin your day. It's a procession of
cars, decorated floats, dancers, near-naked hijras and brainwashed
heterosexuals who are proud to be part of a sin so severe that it
caused the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Back to school, if your son or daughter needs a condom so that they
can have a little fun on their lunch break, they don't need to be
ashamed. They can just go to the school counselor's office and get one
from her, for free. If any of the students want to exercise the
freedom that the American forefathers fought and died for, and engage
in some pre-marital relations without any of the consequences, then
there are hundreds of NGO's to help them with birth control, adoption,
or abortion, without ever letting the parents know what's going on.

I'm being quite bay-sharam, I know, but how else can I explain these
things? How else can I tell you that high-school in Chicago, a very
average place, is a beer-drinking, pot-smoking, hormonally charged
orgy where young girls and boys play merry-go-round with their sexual
partners. Oh, and there's very high-quality biology, chemistry and
physics in there somewhere too.

If you think that my merely mentioning this is outrageous, then what
do you think of the unfortunate Pakistanis and Muslims who study this
as part of school curriculum and are taught to practice these things
in their daily life? It's not their fault they're subjected to such an
immoral brainwashing, and that's why I call them (and myself)
unfortunate instead of guilty. These poor 9th graders (aged 14-15 on
average) did not chose to be born in a society where talk is cheap,
love is free, and God is banned from public schools.

Yes, God is officially banned in public schools. Prayer in school is
quite a controversial issue back over there in God Bless America.
Religion is a private affair, and much like STD's, you're supposed to
keep them to yourself.

The American educational assault goes farther than immorality; it
extends into the illogical and absurd. Did you know that our ancestors
were monkeys? What? You say that you knew your ancestors, and though
one of your uncles had a low forehead, he was hardly simian? You may
also say that the first man was Prophet Adam, peace and blessings be
upon him, and he was no monkey. You know this because God said so, not
just in Islam but in all three major religions of the world, and plus
evolution has been deemed impossible by a huge but muffled community
of scientists. (Read Evolution Deceit: The Scientific Collapse of
Darwinism... by Harun Yahya) If you make the mistake of expressing
your religious beliefs in class, you will be laughed out of class and
scolded when you come eventually come back.

Teacher:(laughing with cocky attitude further bolstered by authority
and his/her own brainwashing) "Silly, backwards, fundamentalist
student, how foolish can you be to believe in God? What, have you ever
seen God?

Look around, I don't see anything remotely worship-able in the
universe, do you?"

Student:(muttering under breath to avoid being failed for bad
behavior) "Well teacher, come to think of it, when I look around I
can't see radio waves, microbes, heat, radiation, wind, or even your
brain for that matter..."

The secular American scientific community boasts of its superior
knowledge, but if you went by the same empirical logic that they use
to ignore God (seeing is believing) then they don't have any brains,
either. Both belief in God and belief in your teacher's brain can only
be confirmed by sight apparently, and since both cases involve death
to do so, (dying to see God, killing your teacher and extracting his
brain...) then the issue stays mostly unresolved in circles who refuse
to use higher reasoning.

I must stop here and give credit to a few very intelligent, very
religious college professors that I had. For example, Dr. P. Lancki, a
religious Christian and a professor of Microbiology. During a long
conversation about religion, science and society at large, Dr.Lancki
told me with wonder in her eyes how it was impossible for a single
cell, miraculous in function and complex in design, to have been
created by accident or random events. Not one single cell could be
produced through the methods that educators teach to students in the
US; evolution, but Dr.Lancki is forbidden to teach that in her class.
"God," one of her coworkers told her, "...died with the dinosaurs. Man
doesn't need religion anymore."

Times change. Where God was once called on sincerely to bless America,
He is now used only for purposes of pro-war propaganda and
occasionally brought up to take accountability off the shoulders of
criminals. "I'm a sociopath murderer, and God made me this way! I'm
gay! And God made me this way! I'm a pedophile, and God made me this
way!"

Religion in American is approached in a way that's comical if it
wasn't so idiotic. In accordance with typical non-judgmental morality,
one religion is no better than the next, and all religions take a
back-seat to freedom. You may not believe that homosexuality is good,
but in America you believe that people should be free to practice
homosexuality if they like. Never mind that you believe it is wrong,
if you say so in public then you are labeled as intolerant,
homophobic, a closet-queer, and of course, a bigot. Bigots get fired
by their employers for being closed-minded, but gays get free
health-insurance from their employers for the same-sex partner they
happen to be living with at the moment.

To move back to America would be to subject my future children to a
thorough brainwashing, regardless of how well I tried to prevent it.
When filth is broadcast on TV, sung about on the radio, advertised on
the internet, and taught in school, how can you even remotely hope to
fight it? Whatever you teach your children between breakfast and
school, school and soccer practice, soccer practice and dinner is
untaught a thousand times over once the child leaves home.

True, there are some Muslims who come out of America with basically
sound minds and characters, but for every sound mind there are 100
corrupt ones who live with their Christian boy-friends, blame God for
homosexuality, use the Masjid as a meat-market for dating and
flirting, and join organizations like the Al-Fateha group. Al-Fateha
sounds holy enough from where you're sitting, I'm sure, but it's
actually an organization of homosexual Muslims in the US and Canada.

The American society is a system of thinly veiled chaos, and every so
often the veil is lifted. In New York, currently the world's most
famous city, the Puerto Rican National Day Parade was one such
example. In broad daylight, buzzed on alcohol and under the cover of
mob-action, two years ago a group of over 50 young men traveled
downtown New York assaulting women. Police stood idly by as women were
stripped naked, sexually assaulted, sprayed with liquor and raped in
the streets on New York. Did darkness hide the mob from the police?
No, it was mid-afternoon. Were the men stopped right away? No, they
rampaged for over three hours.

This is American society, this is what happens to a people who do not
believe in God, whose conduct depends on whether or not anyone will
catch them if they do anything wrong. There is no humility or fear of
Divine Retribution to keep men acting as men, there is only fear of
the police. And when the police invisible or ineffectual, the men
become rapists, murderers, barbarians and savages.

A funny comparison exists between Karachi and New York, two major
cities. In Karachi, when the electricity goes out, children play
chupan-chupai or cricket in the streets. In New York, when the lights
go out, women are assaulted, people are robbed, and stores are looted.
This is not because the electric gates of the prisons have opened,
releasing all of the criminals. No, this is because the electric
lights and eyes of the police have gone blind, and in the cover of
darkness, the common New Yorker becomes a common criminal.

I'm not nuts you know, I'm just honest. You can't get me to go back to
America, not for money, not for fame, not even under the flimsy
pretense of doing Dawah in America. I'm not going to lie to myself and
say that living in America is Dawah, because I can't hide that my tax
dollars pay Israeli settlers $10,000 a year, per family member, to
occupy Palestine and to kill the Ummah I profess to be a part of. A
white-picket fence and a two car garage in the suburbs is not Dawah,
its greed. Sending your children to the best schools is not Dawah, its
opportunism, its taking advantage of a system built on the backs of
third-world countries and dead Muslims.

Thousands of Afghanis have died to put cheaper gas in your sports
utility vehicle, thousands of Iraqis died to keep your car running for
less money, your heating bills down, and your salary higher. Thousands
of Palestinians have been shot with bullets that your tax-dollars
bought and thousand more will if you stay and become the ideal
immigrant. To be the tax-paying, flag-waving, English speaking Desi
who is repulsed by 'backwards' notions of religion, and sends your
children to get a good education at a Catholic school, is to be the
perfectly assimilated, perfectly absorbed hypocrite.

How convenient it is for a Muslim to condemn America for its tyranny,
but take no action against it at all. It's like a shepherd that shares
a cave with wolves who kill his own sheep, but stays because the cave
is warm and the mutton is free. The shepherd stays with the wolves
under the pretense of doing Dawah to the wolves.

He hopes that by living with the wolves, the wolves will feel sympathy
for the shepherd, they will better understand him, and maybe not kill
his sheep anymore. How very convenient, very illogical, and very
beneficial for the shepherd! Never mind that it's wrong, just remember
that the cave is warm and the mutton is free, the streets are clean,
the skyscrapers are shiny, and your children are being given quality
wolf-education and eating quality mutton from your murdered sheep.

Dear aunties, I would recommend that you set your sights on some other
Amreekan Palat, I may move a hundred times in my life, but never back
to the country whose ruler has reinstated the crusades. Never to the
land where a 67 year old Afghani Imam is in camp x-ray for giving
Mujahideen dry bread crusts. Never to a land where my own Muslim
brothers are collateral damage. I swear by Allah, I will never make
that mistake again.

Never.

[chottala.com] 'Mission accomplished'

'Mission accomplished'

Anti-war activists have used the now infamous slogan for their own campaign [GALLO/GETTY]

May 1 marks the fifth anniversary since George Bush, the US president, declared all major military operations in Iraq to be over, in a speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln warship as a banner proclaiming "mission accomplished" hung in the background.

However, five years on from the declaration, there have been more than 4,000 US military deaths and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed or fled the country while the fighting against the presence of US-led troops in the country is ongoing.

Here is a selection of comments from George Bush, the US president, and other senior White House figures, on the aftermath of the war in Iraq.

George Bush, US president

Bush: Iraq war is "difficult, not endless" [EPA]
"Good news to the men and women who fought ... their mission is complete."

"The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September 11, 2001, and still goes on."

May 1, 2003, on the USS Abraham Lincoln, announcing the end of major combat operations in Iraq

"There are some who feel like - that the conditions are such that they can attack us there [in Iraq]. My answer is, bring 'em on! We've got the force necessary to deal with the security situation." July 2, 2003

"A turning point will come two weeks from today." June 16, 2004

"Tomorrow the world will witness a turning point in the history of Iraq, a milestone in the advance of freedom, and a crucial advance in the war on terror." January 29, 2005, one day before Iraq elections

"I'm absolutely confident that the actions we took in Iraq are influencing reformers and freedom lovers in the greater Middle East. And I believe that you're going to see the rise of democracy in many countries in the broader Middle East, which will lay the foundation for peace." June 2005

"2005 will be recorded as a turning point in the history of Iraq ... and the history of freedom." December 12, 2005

"I think - tide turning - see, as I remember - I was raised in the desert, but tides kind of - it's easy to see a tide turn - did I say those words?" June 14, 2006

"Our country is pursuing a new strategy in Iraq, and I ask you to give it a chance to work. And I ask you to support our troops in the field, and those on their way." January 2007

"I want to say a word to our troops and civilians in Iraq. You've performed with incredible skill under demanding circumstances. The turnaround you have made possible in Iraq is a brilliant achievement in American history.

"And while this war is difficult, it is not endless." April 10, 2008

Dick Cheney, US vice president

Cheney: US has made "major progress" in
Iraq [AFP]
"When you think about what we've accomplished in terms of ... launching an attack into Iraq, destroying the Iraqi armed forces, taking down the government of Iraq, getting rid of Saddam Hussein, capturing 42 out of the 55 top leaders, and beginning what I think has been fairly significant success in terms of putting Iraq back together again, the price that we've had to pay is not out of line, and certainly wouldn't lead me to suggest or think that the strategy is flawed or needs to be changed." September 14, 2003

"What we did in Iraq was exactly the right thing to do. If I had it to recommend all over again, I would recommend exactly the same course of action. The world is far safer today because Saddam Hussein is in jail, his government is no longer in power. And we did exactly the right thing." October 7, 2004

"The level of activity that we see today from a military standpoint, I think, will clearly decline. I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency."

"We will succeed in Iraq, just like we did in Afghanistan. We will stand up a new government under an Iraqi-drafted constitution. We will defeat that insurgency, and, in fact, it will be an enormous success story." June 24, 2005

"[If US forces withdrew from Iraq] we would simply validate the terrorists' strategy that says the Americans will not stay to complete the task ... that we don't have the stomach for the fight. That's the biggest threat."

"There's problems - ongoing problems. But we have, in fact, accomplished our objectives of getting rid of the old regime and there is a new regime in place that's been there for less than a year, far too soon for you guys [journalists] to write them off." January 25, 2007

"Well, I look at it and see it [British troops withdrawing from Iraq] is actually an affirmation that there are parts of Iraq where things are going pretty well." February 21, 2007

Cheney: "On the security front, I think there's a general consensus that we've made major progress, that the surge has worked. That's been a major success."

Interviewer: Two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting.

Cheney: So?

Interviewer: So? You don't care what the American people think?

Cheney: "No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls." March 19, 2008

Donald Rumsfeld, former US secretary of defence

"I don't do quagmires." July 24, 2003

"Why the intelligence [on weapons of mass destruction] proved wrong, I'm not in a position to say. I simply don't know. But the world is a lot better off with Saddam Hussein in jail than they were with him in power." October 5, 2004

"We're not going to win against the insurgency. The Iraqi people are going to win against the insurgency. That insurgency could go on for any number of years. Insurgencies tend to go on five, six, eight, 10, 12 years." June 27, 2005

"The terrorists seem to recognise that they are losing in Iraq. I believe that history will show that to be the case." March 19, 2006

Dana Perino, White House spokeswoman

"President Bush is well aware that the banner should have been much more specific, and said, 'mission accomplished for these sailors who are on this ship on their mission'."

"We have certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner. And I recognise that the media is going to play this up again tomorrow, as they do every single year." April 30, 2008
