[chottala.com] Re: [khabor.com] Re: General Moeen

Mr. Munshi, If I accept your statement, the next question is, how did he own  flats worth 60-70 lacks being a goverment officer. Let's assume Gen. Ahmed saved 10,000 taka each month, he could have saved 1.2 lack per year and in 30 years he could have saved 36 lacks.....Please you do the math....Thanks.

After making some inquiries on the issue it seems that Gen. Moeen
repaid the Tk. 66 lakh by selling two flats. The original allegation
was that he had committed some kind of corruption when he repaid the
loans now the allegation appears to have changed into suggesting that
as chairman he should not have been allowed to take the loan. Could
someone clarify whether he in fact took the loan while he was
chairman and whether the law disallows the taking of loans by bank
chairmen.

[chottala.com] Taking NUTS and its benefits over heart

Dear Moderator,

I found an article about nuts and its usefullness for heart. I am sending this for our chottala readers to know something about nut's benefits over the heart and the heart patient.

Dr. Siraj uddowllah, Windsor, Canada.

Can eating nuts help your heart?

It sure looks that way. Most studies on people who eat nuts as part of a heart-healthy diet have found that nuts lower the LDL, low-density lipoprotein or "bad," cholesterol level in the blood. High LDL is one of the primary causes of heart disease, so nuts' ability to lower LDL cholesterol seems to be quite beneficial.
Eating nuts reduces your risk of developing blood clots that can cause a fatal heart attack. Nuts also improve the health of the lining of your arteries. The evidence for the heart-health benefits of nuts isn't rock-solid yet — the Food and Drug Administration only allows food companies to say evidence "suggests but does not prove" that eating nuts reduces heart disease risk. Still, the existing evidence looks promising.

What's in nuts that's thought to be heart healthy?

It's not entirely clear, but it's thought that the unsaturated fats in nuts — both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — lower bad cholesterol levels. Many nuts are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are a healthy form of fatty acids that seem to help your heart by, among other things, preventing dangerous heart rhythms that can lead to heart attacks. Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in fish, but nuts are one of the best plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Nuts also have lots of arginine, which is a molecule that increases the production of nitric oxide in your body, which may in turn help improve the health of your artery walls and make them more flexible and less prone to blood clots. Other substances in nuts that could improve your heart health include Vitamin E and fiber.

Does it matter what kind of nuts you eat?

Possibly. Most nuts appear to be generally healthy, though some more so than others. Walnuts are one of the best-studied nuts, and it's been shown they contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Almonds, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts and pecans are other nuts that appear to be quite heart healthy. Even peanuts — which are technically not a nut, but a legume — seem to be relatively healthy. Keep in mind, you could end up canceling out the heart-healthy benefits of nuts if they're covered with chocolate, sugar or salt.

What amount of nuts is considered healthy?

Nuts contain a lot of fat; as much as 80 percent of a nut is fat. Even though most of this fat is healthy fat, it's still a lot of calories. That's why you should eat nuts in moderation. Ideally, you should use nuts as a substitute for saturated fat. Instead of eating unhealthy saturated fats, try substituting a handful of nuts. Current dietary guidelines suggest eating 1 to 2 ounces (a small handful) of nuts each day. But again, do this as part of a heart-healthy diet. Just eating nuts and not cutting back on saturated fats found in many dairy and meat products won't do your heart any good.

Are there other benefits of eating nuts?

Probably. Nuts contain Vitamin E, which, in addition to possibly being good for your heart, is thought by some researchers to help protect your cells against some forms of cancer. However, the evidence for Vitamin E's benefits in heart disease or cancer prevention is rather slim at the moment. Another theory is that Vitamin E might help prevent cataracts. Nuts also contain fiber, and a high-fiber diet is thought to help prevent heart disease and diabetes. A diet high in foods that contain fiber also might help prevent colon cancer, but the evidence here is mixed.

How about nut oils? Are they healthy, too?

Nut oils are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. Walnut oil is highest in omega-3s. Nut oils contain saturated as well as unsaturated fats. Consider using nut oils in homemade salad dressing or in cooking. When cooking with nut oils, remember that they respond differently to heat than do vegetable oils. Nut oil, if overheated, can become bitter. Just like with nuts, use nut oil in moderation to restrict overall calorie and fat intake.

It was TareK Zia who was one of the major sponsors for selecting Gen. M. U. Ahmed as the Army Chief. In fact, Syed Eskander opposed the idea. Thanks.

Subject: [chottala.com] Things you need to know about General Moeen U Ahmed

Everything you need to know about General Moeen U Ahmed

General Moeen U. Ahmed's career details are available online. It says , of course, that he is the first Chief of Staff to be commissioned amongst the officers who graduated in independent Bangladesh. A listing is also given of the commands that he held. However, it is clear on close scrutiny that no dates are given on when he assumed command of these units or when he got his promotions.

General Moeen U Ahmed's army career stalled until BNP was elected to power in 2001. General Ahmed is from Noakhali, in South-Eastern Bangladesh. Noakhali is close to Feni, birthplace and bastion of BNP supremo Khaleda Zia and her family. General Ahmed made this geographical proximity his selling-point and started strenuous efforts to ingratiate himself with the BNP power-brokers. He paid special attention to the two men who would emerge as the ultimate arbitrators of all military postings and promotions for the army, navy, and the air force during 2001-2006: Khaleda Zia's brother Major (ret.) Sayeed Iskandar her nephew, Saiful Islam (Duke).

Incidentally, these two men have a lot to answer for. They have been responsible for ruining some of the most promising men in our armed forces; men who were too straight-laced and professional to kowtow to them. Fortunately for him and unfortunately for us, Ahmed was not one of them. He ingratiated himself with these two men very successfully, and managed to get for himself a prize command in Chittagong and also positioned himself as a key contender for the post of Chief of Army Staff.

Incidentally, these two men are the only two members of Khaleda Zia's family who were part of the government apparatus for the last five years, but have not been asked to provide wealth reports to the current military government.

Anyone familiar with power politics in Bangladesh is aware of the intense speculation and jockeying that precedes the appointment of the Chief of Army Staff. Various factions vie for the ear of the Prime Mnister to get their own candidates chosen. There was general consensus that Lt. Gen. Hasan Mashud had been an excellent Chief of Army Staff, and appointing another decent general after him to lead the army would have gone down well with the country in general and the armed forces in particular. Quite a few members of Zia's kitchen cabinet were against this appointment going to a political general like Moeen U Ahmed, and her military secretary went as far as to write an official note recommending her against this appointment.

History, however, was on General Moeen's side. During her previous administration, when it came time to pick a Chief of Army Staff who would serve through the 1996 election, Begum Zia opted for efficiency and service seniority over political expediency, and picked Lt. Gen. Nasim over commanders perceived to be more loyal to the government. Proving the adage that no good deeds go unpunished in Bangladeshi politics, Lt. Gen. Nasim promptly tried to stage a coup and overthrow the government. Keeping that particular lesson in mind, Zia decided to take the low route this time and pick a political general who would know during every second of his job that he was only there thanks to his servilityto his political masters. This, she thought, would ensure his loyalty.

The rest, of course, is history. General Moeen staged a bloodless coup on January 11th and imposed indirect military rule; he has ruled Bangladesh in all but name for the last eight months, given himself a promotion to four-star General, changed the command structure of Bangladesh's armed forces in order to manage the nice shiny fourth star on his car, and become the first Army Chief in the last twenty years to have his effigy burnt by Dhaka University students.

So this is where our Chief of Army Staff has been. What do you think his future plans are? And more importantly, what do these plans include for us, and for the future of Bangladeshi democract? Remember, whatever these plans are, he'll be trying really hard to sell them to various American officials, during his visit to the US, as the best thing that could possibly happen to Bangladesh at this juncture.

Khaleda denied amnesty to legalise money
Published: Wednesday, 17 October, 2007, 01:50 AM Doha Time
By Mizan Rahman
Khaleda Zia ... taxing time ahead
DHAKA:
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has finally turned down a request from detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson to legalise her undisclosed money under the amnesty offered to tax evaders and black money holders.
Mohammed Ali, deputy commissioner of tax circle-22, in a letter apprised Khaleda of the position of the tax department, officials said yesterday.
Quoting the amnesty, the letter said that it would not be applicable for Khaleda as the Anti-Corruption Commission had lodged a case against her and her tax evasion case was under process to be filed soon by the tax department.
The refusal letter was sent to Khaleda through the jail authorities, sources in the NBR said, which was not made available to her tax lawyer, it was learnt.
"The amnesty facility would not be applicable for Khaleda as the former prime minister has been charged with corruption and the taskforces on major crimes are investigating her tax dodging case," a tax official said.
"The statutory regulatory order of the government, issued on June 4 in this connection, categorically bars the people already charged with corruption or facing investigations for irregularities, from the amnesty."
The NBR on June 4 offered the amnesty for two months, until July 31, to taxpayers for legalising their undisclosed money by paying a 5% penalty in addition to the usual tax. The amnesty period was extended until September 30 considering the huge last-minute response from the taxpayers.
The NBR directives say that individuals and businesses facing tax evasion charges and legal actions are barred from availing of the money legalising facility.
Khaleda, now detained in jail, on September 27 deposited tax of around 9,50,000 taka to the exchequer to whiten an undisclosed amount of 3.6mn taka, availing of the money-legalising opportunity for the second time.
This should not be treated as illegal money either, said Ahmed Azam Khan, her tax lawyer, adding that the BNP chairperson found the time suitable for including the amount under the undisclosed money category following the NBR offer.
On July 31, Khaleda deposited through her representative about 3.38mn taka with the central bank in taxes on her 13.3mn taka undisclosed income availing of a government-declared amnesty for the first time.
The tax paid at the first chance by Khaleda against 13.3mn taka was not readily accepted by the revenue board on the grounds of non-compliance with the formalities in the process of paying tax. It was, however, accepted one week later.
"The undisclosed money of the former prime minister was legalised earlier as no case was lodged against Khaleda as of July 31," a taxman said.
Her lawyer, however, said they would go to court against the decision of the revenue board as no case had so far been filed against her for tax evasion.
"The NBR chairman has recently said anybody could pay tax against their undisclosed money even after the expiry of the amnesty period, which sharply contradicts their decision on Khaleda," Azam said.
"She paid tax before the expiry of the scheme and no tax evasion case has so far been filed against her to justify the refusal on the part of the revenue board."
Khaleda along with 11 others, including his youngest son Arafat Rahman, are facing a graft charge, brought by the Anti-Corruption Commission, of violating tender conditions in appointing an indenting house for container handling. The commission is also investigating at least three other corruption charges against her.

[chottala.com] Contracts and Coups for Curt Weldon, Bangladesh military's White House Lobbyist(?)

Contracts and Coups for Curt Weldon, Bangladesh military's White House Lobbyist(?)

Is Former Congressman Mr.Curt Weldon is lobbying the White House  on behalf of the Bangladesh military?

Mr. Curt Weldon, represented the "Global Alliance for Homeland Security" when he visited Dhaka in March.

The  "Global Alliance for Homeland Security" [ A shadowy group] has listed an apartment in Woddside Queens, NYC as its address in it's registration  with New Yok State. The office bearers are:

Mr. Aminullah, Chairman

Mr. Golam Mehraj [Vice-Chairman]

Mr. Shamim Khondoker {Convenor]
Mr, M, A. Mannan [Co-ordinator].
Mr. Shafiq Khan Shahan [ Joint Co-ordinator]
Mr. Asif Bari Tutle [Joint Co-ordinator]

Bangladesh Army's  Principal Staff Officer Lieutenant General Masududdin Chowdhury will attend a seminar on Global Terrorism to be held in Washington D.C on October 2008. This seminar is sponsored by Global Alliance for Homeland Security.

[Please note that Curt Weldon is no longer a US congressman. He was defeated last year by Joe Sestak. Weldon was not representaing the US government but a shady little neo-con outfit called Global Alliance For Homeland Security. Weldon is considered a bit of a kook in the US and is under investigation by the FBI for trading favors for lobbying contracts. Weldon's visit to Bangladesh bears watching because it has neo-con written all over it. He was there shilling for Defense Solutions, trying to drum up business. Ringgold heads up Defence Solutions and Weldon is a paid lobbyist there.

Here's a little more info about Weldon's trip from the blog TPMCAfe:

Contracts and Coups for Curt Weldon

As vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee, Curt Weldon insisted that Saddam Hussein had WMDs; disputed the 9/11 Commission's findings about the "Able Danger" conspiracy theory; and received intelligence on Iran from an associate of Manucher Ghorbanifar, the arms dealer whom the CIA found was fabricating intelligence during the Iran-Contra scandal. No wonder he's now the Chief Strategic Officer for Defense Solutions, a defense contractor based in Weldon's old district outside Philadelphia.

Weldon received a great deal of negative publicity during his election campaign, when the FBI investigated him for securing lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter worth $1 million. But Jim Donahue, Defense Solution's Director of Project Management, told the Prospect that the firm has had a longstanding relationship with Weldon running business development conferences, and that he had no reason to question Weldon's integrity or honesty. "I really thought there was a lot of sensationalizing in the media about him," Donahue said.

According to Donahue, Weldon was instrumental in organizing Defense Solution's outreach to Bangladesh in the wake of the recent military coup that has installed an interim government there. General Moeen Ahmed, the head of the military in Bangladesh, knew of Defense Solution's contract to rebuild 77 Soviet-style tanks for U.S. forces in Iraq, and he wants similar vehicles for Bangladesh.

In March, Weldon led an envoy of retired military personnel to Dhaka in order to foster better relations between the United States and Bangladesh. In addition to military vehicles, Bangladesh wants to open branches of Prime Bank Limited in Bangladeshi communities in the United States. This new partnership comes despite growing instability in Bangladesh and United Nations allegations that the country's armed officials have been relying on murder and torture as a means of law enforcement.
