[chottala.com] Editor Naimul Islam Khan and the unpulished report

Editor Naimul Islam Khan and the unpulished report

Bah, valoi tu shikhechhen, Mr. Editor. Vaggo valo that there is no strict ethics enforcement mechanism for your profession, otherwise ....

It was amazing to read your shikarokti-mulok column about your mishandling of professional behaviour as an editor of a national daily that you also own. First of all, if you were not the publisher too, instead if there was someone else in that place, you should have been fired by now. But Alas! you are the publisher, too. (If you are not yet sure what we are talking about, here it is: http://www.amadershomoy.com/news.php?id=216255&sys=1 )

Secondly, if there was any attempt to keep sanity of your profession in Bangladesh and also, if there was any serious and capable attempt on the part of government to return sanity to your profession, by this time, there should have been a prosecution started on the allegation of professional misconduct on your part. But Alas, that is not there. So, you are safe.

(BTW, we would write another article soon, on how government could actually try to return sanity in your profession, without being heavy handed)

Most unfortunate thing is that you have also learned the prime incapability (or capability!) from our corrupt politicians. Blame something else for your incompetence. So, what is that 'something else'? Well, for people in other nations, it is different in different countries, based on the character and background of those leaders in different countries. But in Bangladesh, it is always the same. Poverty. Doesn't not matter what is the problem, poverty is always the villain for the politicians. You may say - isn't it? Well, yes, it is the symptom of something most of the cases. But it by itself is not the cause. We would like to ask a reverse question to them, what have you done about it? Just because you lead a poor country, you should sleep two hours less from other leaders in other countries. Have they done it? No. But they were the first to sell the misfortune of my country for nothing. A new type of begging is starting - it seems. We are having problem because of them. Climate Change is the new villain, in addition to the poverty. Well, didn't Bangladesh know that is going to happen? What they have done about it? Given the scenario, Bangladesh should be intimately working with Netherland for technology help - if we are really worried about rising sea-level. Don't know what is the relationship with Netherland here? Well, if you do not know, you should try to know. We can not go in detail here. But the point is, we haven't done anything to do that. So, just do not start blaming others for the misfortune and incompetence of yours.

Coming back to the topic, Mr. Editor, you are lucky that none of the possibility would become true, even though you have started something you can not professionally do and also keep it sane by behaving ethically. What is your defense? You have to pay your people! Who can deny that logic, right? Good. Good. Eito chai. That way you can get yourself into the category of others in your profession who has gone before you.

Enough sarcasm. Before we end, let us do what we usualy try. Lets try to be constructive and see if there is any solution to your problem. Thats what we try to do - find out innovative and pragmatic solution.

What you have done in the past, lets forget. After all, you have at least confessed, which many are not doing. So, lets forget that. But lets also not forget that you have to do something to make sure that you can not use the same logic again. You can not open and close your ethics book as needed basis. That should be always open at your desk. Can you do that?

You must be thinking - how come? Oh, you are the owner, too. Right? How about listing your media company in the stock exchange? Why don't ask for support from those who deserves that - instead of the culprits who mostly runs businesses (at least that was the case so far, for perceived successful companies and NGOs). You might be surprised to find out how many investors are there who are inspired by the Social Entrepreniourship Model being preached by Professor Yunus. Why don't you try that? After all, you should not be worried about ownership since it seems to be a liability for your professional work, assuming our assumptions about you are correct.

Have you considered doing that? If not, you should. Or you should consider asking for investment through private placement, if you do not have enough guts to go public. There should be enough people who wants to pay for the ownership by not interfering your operations. You have enough fans and friends - use your editor to sell the ownership or liability to them. Being editor comes with some responsibility. Being owner also comes with some responsibility. You can not switch the roles whichever fits you and still expect to get away with that. Ekbar duibar public might be amazed at your openness, but one day they will get. Don't wait for that day.

If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please forward it to others. If you have an ear to the columinsts in regular traditional media, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.

Thanks for your time,

Innovation Line

4 RU teachers jailed for inciting August unrest

Tue, Dec 4th, 2007 5:13 pm BdST

Four Rajshahi University teachers Tuesday were convicted for inciting campus unrest in August and sentenced each to two years in prison while two others were cleared.

Additional chief judicial magistrate Ruhul Amin handed down the verdict on management teacher Malay Kumar Bhowmik and mass communication teachers Selim Reza Newton, Dulal Chandra Biswas and Abdullah Al Mamun.

They each were fined Tk 1,000 or face another month in jail should they fail to pay the money.

The court acquitted former vice chancellor of the university Saidur Rahman Khan and applied physics teacher Abdus Sobhan of the charges.

The court verdict said the four teachers were jailed for breaching emergency powers rules. The accused were in the dock when the judgement was delivered at 11:15am.

Since morning, students, teachers and people in general began pouring into Rajshahi judicial magistrate's court complex to hear the judgment, prompting reinforcement of security measures.

This is the first verdict delivered in the cases filed in connection with the agitation and excesses committed countrywide for days in the wake of demonstrations the students of Dhaka University staged in late August.

The lawyers for the convicts said they would appeal the verdict in the higher court.

Reacting to the jail sentences, teachers across the nation said they were deeply concerned at this 'unprecedented and unheard of' court decision.

Writer Hasan Azizul Haque, Islamic history and culture professor Sayequzzaman, psychology teacher Shamsuddin Ilyas, mass communication teacher Mashihur Rahman, and others consoled the convicts in the court.

"I expected that all our teachers would be acquitted. I know the convicted teachers ver well personally, they have earned a name for themselves as teachers and intellectuals. I never found them involved in anti-state activities," Azizul Haque said after the verdict.

Lawyer for the teachers Golam Arif Tipu told reporters that the judgment was based on a contradictory deposition and that the verdict was unlikely to be upheld by the higher court.

In the aftermath of the Dhaka University demonstrations, the Rajshahi University campus witnessed widespread student-police clashes on Aug 22.

A couple of days later, security forces arrested professors Saidur Rahman, Abdus Sobhan and Malay Kumar Bhowmik.

On Aug 26, the local police chief filed a case against the arrestees charging them with instigating the students.

On Sept 1, sub-inspector Nasir Uddin of Motihar Police Station pressed charges in the court against the six teachers.

Dulal Chandra Biswas, Selim Reza Newton and Abdullah Al Mamun surrendered before the court and the court sent them to prison.

Charges were framed in the case on Sept 17 and 20 witnesses testified until Nov 14.

An arson case filed over setting afire a car of the DGFI, the intelligence wing of the armed forces, during the demonstrations in Rajshahi, charged 14 persons including geology and mining teachers Sarwar Jahan Sajal and Sabbir Sattar Tapu.

The court set Dec 6 for verdict on the case.

Because it is not a good policy to give every job to CTG to reign them for ever. We have to come out of this Habit of generalising everything and behave like that no water touch our body. To blame all side is  cunning policy but to comments with logic is much appreciated. First policy will not give any result but with dialogue and debate truth comes out wherever it hides. So let us try to find the truth by debate not to hide by such neutral stand as done by Dina.

[chottala.com] Jamaat leader Mujahid faces sedition charges [includes Shah Md Abdul Hannan]

Jamaat leader Mujahid faces sedition charges

Wed, Dec 5th, 2007 4:45 pm BdST

Dhaka, Dec 5 (bdnews24.com)— A freedom fighter Wednesday filed a sedition case against Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Md Mujahid and two others for anti-Liberation activities.

The other two accused in the case, filed by Md Fazlur Rahman of Companyganj, are Jamaat's assistant secretary general Abdul Kader Molla and former chairman of Islami Bank Shah Md Abdul Hannan.

This first such case of treason or sedition in recent times was filed under the Criminal Procedure Code with Dhaka CMM's Court. Metropolitan magistrate Imran Hossain Chowdhury heard the plaintiff's statement in the case.

The case accuses the three of obstructing the emergence of an independent Bangladesh in 1971, and creating and ordering the Razakar, Al Badr and Al Shams forces to kill pro-liberation civilians including intellectuals.

The plaintiff said the accused persons committed crimes of treason by killing about 30 lakh people, raping about two lakh women and other ill activities.

It also said that 36 years after liberation, the accused did not yet recognise Bangladesh's victory, flag, constitution or Independence Day.

The plaintiff Fazlur Rahman told bdnews24.com: "I could not file a case in the past due to the various adverse political situations in the country."

His counsel advocate Abu Mohammad Abdur Razzak said: "War crimes and murder cases can be filed any time."

The investigation officer of the case has the authority to approve it, he added.

Naujobillah !!!

Why don't you confess and describe your true role in 1971 in details?

Be honest and tell us: Did you support Mukti-Bahini or the Occupation
Army in 1971?

Tell us how did you try to save your beloved Islamic Republic of Pakistan
in 1971 by helping the Occupation Army?
Which camp did you belong in your self-described "Civil War ?"

Most Bangladeshi's inside helped the MuktiJoddhas in whatsoever way
they could.

What did you do? Did you help the Rajaker, Albodor and Alshams and
Jamaati politicians in Chittogong with all your dedications ....?

What was your state of mind on the night of 16th December 1971 after
your Pak Army surrendered? Did you cry? Did you help the fleeing
collaborators to hide?

Did you or your Jamaati buddies ever performed a Tauba ceremony for
misdeeds in 1971 and collaboration with Occupation Army?

Don't try to hide your true color. You are just one of those motivated persons
in action with henious motives to help Jamaat and other religion-traders!

Don't you feel any guilt, moral turpitude or shame for you henious misdeeds?

You can donate online for Cyclone SIDR victims to the Chief Adviser's Relief and Welfare Fund by the following website of the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington D.C.:
