[chottala.com] Hate Crime in New York - cabbie stabbed - Posted by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

Hate Crime in New York - cabbie stabbed

As I feared, Islamophobia has its latest victim in a hate crime that saw a Muslim cab driver in New York city severely stabbed several times by a White American. The Republican leaders and right wing conservative talk show hosts cannot escape from being held responsible for spreading hate crime against Muslims. Such propaganda and hatemongering is sure to bring the worst from bigots and chauvinists.

Here is the report from the
USA Today:
NEW YORK — A Manhattan cabbie who was stabbed Tuesday night by a Putnam County man questioned Wednesday whether the attack stemmed from the contentious debate over creating a mosque near ground zero.

Ahmed H. Sharif, 43, of Queens, was stabbed several times by Michael Enright, 21, of Southeast, N.Y., after Enright had asked Sharif if he was Muslim and the cabbie responded that he was, a police spokesman said.

When officers responded to the scene around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sharif was outside the vehicle, suffering from stab wounds, after attempting to lock Enright inside the cab, a police spokesman said. Enright escaped but was captured nearby by police.

The charges against Enright include attempted murder as a hate crime.

In a statement Wednesday the from New York Taxi Workers Alliance, Sharif warned his fellow cabbies.

"Right now the public sentiment is very serious" because of the ground zero mosque debate, he said. "All drivers should be more careful."

Sharif, who was treated at Bellevue Hospital for stab wounds to his arms, throat and face, said the incident made him sad.

"I have been here more than 25 years. I have been driving a taxi more than 15 years. All my four kids were born here. I never feel this hopeless and insecure before," he said.

It was Sharif's first fare of his shift.

Enright, a 2007 graduate of Brewster High School and an aspiring filmmaker, recently returned from Afghanistan, where he filmed Marines as part of a project for the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where he is a student. In Afghanistan, he was embedded with a Marines Corps crew that included his fellow Brewster High graduate, Cpl. Alex Eckner.

Enright was highly intoxicated when he hailed the cab, the police spokesman said. Once inside the cab, Enright asked Sharif whether Sharif was Muslim. When Sharif responded yes, Enright stabbed him several times with some type of utility knife.

According to the statement from the Taxi Workers Alliance, Enright's conversation with Sharif started out friendly, with Enright asking the cabbie where he was from, how long he had been in America, if he was Muslim and if he was observing Ramadan.

Enright then went silent before suddenly cursing and screaming, the statement said.

He then shouted "'Assalamu Alaikum,' common among Muslims as a wish for peace, before pulling out the knife and slashing Sharif across the neck and stabbing several more times as Sharif tried to knock it out of Enright's hands, the alliance said.

Enright was charged with attempted second-degree murder as a hate crime, first-degree assault, felonies, aggravated harassment and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, misdemeanors. He is awaiting arraignment.

Enright also worked with Intersections International, a Manhattan-based, multifaith and multicultural effort that seeks to promote justice and peace. Messages left with the School of Visual Arts and Intersections International were not immediately returned.

[chottala.com] Don't force girl students to wear veil

The fact is: Veil can't be forced and that is the High Court ruling,
not "Bangladesh bans enforced Islamic dress code" as
Mr. Mo Ashgar from University of Richmond, VA contends.

Distortion and foul moutning  is the Mr. Mo Asghar's business
as usual ..... and a normal practice of the religion traders,
on which they thrieve and mislead the ordinary believers.

Wearing or not wearing a particular dress is an individual's
free choice ...... You can not subjugate an individual
by force and authority in the name of religion.

Thanks

Veil can't be forced: HC

Staff Correspondent

The High Court yesterday issued a suo moto order directing the government to ensure that no woman is forced to wear borkha (veil) or religious attires at the educational institutions and offices across the country.

The court also ordered the government to ensure that the cultural activities and sports in the educational institutions are not restricted in any manner.

An HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain came up with the order following a news item published in a Bangla daily yesterday with the headline "Rani Bhabani Mahila College - Borka Na Porle Ashte Mana" meaning the students of Rani Bhabani Women's College without veils are barred from entering the college.

The news item said the Principal of the college in Natore Mozammel Haque, who joined the college two months ago, has stopped any cultural activities and sports at the college and restricted the entrance of the students (female) without borkha or veil to the college.

The HC directed the government to immediately take action against the principal for imposing restrictions on the students regarding wearing veil and stopping cultural activities and sports at the college.

The court ordered Mozammel to appear before the HC bench on August 26 to explain the matter.

It also issued a rule upon the government to explain why imposition of restriction on cultural activities and sports in the educational institutions and offices and forcing the female students to wear veil should not be declared illegal.

Secretaries to the ministries of home, education, social welfare and women affairs and Mozammel Haque have been made respondents to the rule and order.

Supreme Court lawyers barrister Mahbub Shafique and advocate KM Hafizul Alam placed the matter through an application before the HC bench.

Earlier on April 8 this year, the HC had ruled that none can force women, working at public and private educational institutions, to wear veils or cover their heads against their will.

It is their personal choice, the court said, asking the education secretary to make sure that women are not harassed by their superiors at educational institutions.

Don't force girl students to wear veil: Education Ministry

Star Online Report

The Ministry of Education on Wednesday issued a circular directing the authorities concerned not to force female students for wearing veils or religious attires at their educational institutions.

In the circular, signed by Education Secretary Sayed Ataur Rahman, also asked the authorities not to resist female students from participating in sports and cultural activities at the institutions.

The circular was issued following the news items published in different newspapers saying that female students were forced to wear veils and religious dresses at some government and private educational institutions across the country.

The items also mentioned that the institutions had imposed restrictions on the students regarding stopping cultural activities and sports.

The circular also asked the authorities to ensure that the female students are not harassed or punished for not wearing veil.

It directed the heads of the educational institutions and the management committees to take necessary steps to ensure the matters.

The circular said the departments, directorates or education boards under the Education Ministry will take legal actions against the educational institutions and the management committees if found violating the instructions.

Earlier on August 22, the High Court issued a suo moto order directing the government to ensure that no woman is forced to wear veil or religious dress at the educational institutions and offices across the country.

[chottala.com] Indian ONGC to set up first power project to run on Bangladesh gas

WRT: Indian ONGC to set up first power project to run on Bangladesh gas

Mr Delwar.

The links have clear indications that Indian Officials were in Dhaka in 2005.
Do you deny that ?

Please read the various news items at that time regarding visits by Indian
officials and tell us why they were in Dhaka in 2005?
....Just to fry some varenda?

Find out and tell us what happend behind the closed door discussions
with Indian officials, when Mahmudur Rahman was the Energy Advisor of
Khaleda Zia's Government. These were immediately prior to Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone of the power plant in
October.of  2005.

The then Energy Advisor Mahmud had meeting with the Indian Petroleum
and Natural Gas Minister Aiyar on gas pipelines  during his stay in Dhaka.
What those gas pipelines were intended for?

It will be foolish to think that without some kinds of  agreement and assurance
by the Khaleda's Government on the supply of fuel (gas) ONGC will start
investing on 9 Billion-Rupee power plant and lay foundation foundation
stone for the project.

Why don't you find out the inside stories of the Indian officials visiting
Bngladesh in mid-2005... What were the purposes behind those visits?

History has shown many times that shrewed & compadore money makers
mask themselves as "real patriot" to hide the deals when they sell the
country .... In any case, my understanding is that the supply of gas deal must
have been made in 2005 ....

You said that "There was no deal or contact to supply natural gas
between India and Bangladesh during 4 party alliance government".
You may be lying too ! You may very well be the real father of liers...
[Sorry I am just using your verbage]

How do you know that "there was no deal or contact to supply natural gas
between India and Bangladesh
?" If so, when those were made?
Give a concrete reference to prove your assertion....

My contention was that "without assurance from Bangladesh government
in 2005 on the supply of gas India would not start a project that would run
on thin air...

I do not see the supply of gas on fare price is not selling the country.
I repeat:
Understandably, the viability of any power plant project is fully dependent
on the fuel supply, that is natural gas from Bangladesh in this case.

[Khaleda Zia's government gave the assurance for the supply of
natural gas to India's ONGC in 2005, which was a key factor in
selecting the power plant location near the Bangladesh border]

The power plant could very well be mutually beneficial for both
countries:
             (1) Bangladesh will get fair price for the gas
             (2) Bangladesh will be allowed to buy power generated by that plant.

Mutually beneficial regional co-operation is a key factor for progress in
today's world ...  What's your motive to oppose that?

BTW, my question to you:
why didn't Khaleda's Government plan to build a Power Plant inside Bangladesh
to be fueled by the gas from the same source to cater our national needs?
The damand for elecrticity in Bangladesh is not a new issue!

Again you have proved that you are father of liars . The links you provided, not a single news approved your claim. There was no deal or contact to supply natural gas

What's your motive? We might have political differences, but we must have combine voice for national interest.

when Mahmudur Rahman was the Adviser of the Energy Ministry and

Bangladesh government had agreed to allow India to use natural gas from
Bangladesh for this power plant project, for which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

    Who has survived an accident...

    To! realize

Ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics

    Time waits for no one.

    Treasure every moment you have.
You will treasure it even more when

you can share it with someone special.

Re: [chottala.com] Warm Wishes....for building Nation Vision of hoping Quality Nation.

As a Bangabundhu's  political Ideological supporter & country's senior most top raking taught person you can suggest directly to his daughter BAL Chief & Chief of Government Administration to think for providing nation wide specific work knowledge quality education to the people who are working in different work fields (such as political activists member of parliament ministers judicial judges teaching taught persons all government officers staffs & workers)  to be quality educated skilled in his work subject to do his work perfectly in time.

    It needs to remember that

For solving Electricity Gas Water crisis's Traffic Jams & other section's problems & smooth working are required specific knowledge educated skilled & efficient work persons. Without skilled & work knowledge man power any Government Administration could not be able to solve any problems at any fields.  Only speaking work & writing work can not solve any problem.

Ruling party of Bangladesh Government Administration should be realistic to understand that the education system & education courses reformation is required for creating creative knowledge skilled & active work persons.

Government Administration should needs to understand that

    A) in gas field

    B) In electric fields

    (C) In water field

    (D) in other service sectors

Regular checking works & regular maintenance works of the instruments are required for continuous production for smooth operation & for regular circulation.

    A)    In traffics system also required providing traffic education & practical training of traffics rules driving rules & road codes to the drivers to the traffics polices & to road users to learn for correct driving for maintaining discipline for  properly walking on the roads & to obey all the rules of traffic & rode codes.

    ·         To Build Digital Bangladesh

    ·         Educations of Bangladesh should be realistic

    ·         To learn to teach what need to teach

    ·         To learn to do works what works need to do

    ·         To do work perfectly what works need to do correctly.

Thanks for your very constructive feedback. VAT has nothing to do with providing quality education. It has become a national problem. It needs a total reformation.  I do write on this occasionally. Soon there may be one in DS, may be next week.

With warm wishes and persona regards.

    Mr. Abdul

Thank you for your 2 column appears in today's Daily Star and Janakantha. .

You wrote "Education sector needs a realistic handling."

    You are correct.

    A)                  It will be highly appreciated if you suggest the Government Administration to do reformation in education sector for selecting right & correct knowledge educated teachers to teach the students rightly right subject of right education knowledge courses for creating right educated skilled efficient creative & active work persons to do work rightly in the respective work fields with applying right educated correct knowledge in each work field.

    You are not correct

    B)                  Imposing VAT by Government in private education sectors is justified.

    Because

Private Education sector is providing Certificate Education & is doing Commercial Education selling business.

Private education sector is creating work knowledge less so called higher educated certificate holder scholars expert in speaking  but worthless & inefficient in working.. They can not do any work correctly or efficiently rather they create problems & nonsense situation in work fields.

It will be appreciated highly if you suggest the BAL Administration to ban non quality education & to provide nation wide quality education to the people to be quality educated in his subject to do work correctly in his work field.

To solve the problems of Electricity Gas Water Traffic Jams & other section are needed quality educated skilled & quality knowledge efficient work persons. Without skilled man power any Government or any Administration can not solve any problems at any field.  Only speaking & chapabaji writing can not solve any problem.

Government should be realistic to understand in the field of education that educations are needed to create skilled work people. Government should needs to understand that

    A)      In electric field

    B)      In gas field

    C)      In water field

    D)      In other service sectors are required maintenance work, repairing work to run the instruments perfectly & correctly for continuous production for smooth operation & for regular circulation.

    E)      For traffics system required to provide  education of traffics rules driving rules & road codes to the drivers & traffics polices to maintain discipline & to obey rules of traffic & rode codes.

So the Educations of Bangladesh to build Digital Bangladesh should be realistic  to teach to learn what need to teach & what need to learn for what works need to do perfectly & to do works correctly.

     Regard & wish you  best

    Khan
