Brazil calls on Israel to "establish full, independent and credible investigations"

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Brazil here on Wednesday called on Israel to "establish full, independent credible investigations" into Israeli war crimes during the Gaza conflict which is backed by a UN fact-finding mission report.

This statement came as Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Brazilian ambassador to the United Nations, was speaking at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly to consider the Goldstone report, which accuses both Israel and Hamas militants of war crimes during the 22-day Gaza conflict that broke out on Dec. 27, 2008.

"The Israeli government and the relevant authorities in Gaza must establish full, independent and credible investigations, in conformity with international standards, into the serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law reported by the Mission," she said.

"Given the responsibility of the international community to ensure accountability for infringements of international law, Brazil believes that international monitoring of those investigations is needed," Viotti said.

Recognizing the "right of Israel to defend its people and territory against all kinds of aggression," she said, but "at the same time, in defending itself, Israel is bound by international law."

"The Goldstone report is a particularly eloquent proof of the urgency to put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the violations of international humanitarian law it has brought about," Viotti said.

Emphasizing their support for the peace process, Viotti called on both parties "to take the measures needed to restart and sustain credible negotiations."

After the debate, the GA will put to vote a draft resolution, which would call upon both Israel and Palestine to conduct "independent and credible" probes into the alleged war crimes.

Israel has rejected the Goldstone report on the ground that it is "biased" and "one-sided."

A four-member investigative team, led by Richard Goldstone from South Africa, found evidence that both Israeli forces and Palestinian militants committed serious war crimes and breaches of humanitarian law, which may amount to crimes against humanity, during the conflict.

UN chief urges Israel to end 'provocative actions' in east Jerusalem

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday urged Israel to end its "provocative actions" in east Jerusalem and to abide by its commitments to freeze all settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.

"The Secretary General is dismayed at continued Israeli actions in occupied east Jerusalem, including the demolition of Palestinian homes, the eviction of Palestinian families and the insertion of settlers into Palestinian neighborhoods," a UN statement said.

"The eviction today of a Palestinian family in east Jerusalem is just the most recent incident," it added.

Warning that such actions "stoke tensions, cause suffering and further undermine trust," Ban urged Israel "to cease such provocative actions."

He also reiterated his call on Israel "to implement its commitments" under the blueprint for Middle East peace put forward by the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations "by freezing all settlement activity, including natural growth; dismantling outposts; and reopening Palestinian institutions in east Jerusalem."

Earlier Tuesday, dozens of Israeli settlers took over a house in mostly Arab east Jerusalem, armed with a court order secured after a protracted legal battle with a Palestinian family, witnesses and police said.

[chottala.com] Re: [Sonar Bangladesh] BREAKING NEWS>>> Nizami Elected as Jamaat Ameer again

This means that Jamaate Islami  is still deeply  inundated under it's Al-Badari
legacy.....mr nizami's role as the Izlami Chattro Sangha vis-a-vis Al-Badar
chief in 1971 to serve Yahia' occupation  regime will continue be the hidden
undertone of Jamaat's politics no matter what lebash it project to the
people of Bangladesh .....Once a traitor always a traitor ....No amount of hell-fire
can purify such an infected brain: The traitor's criminal condition emanates from
deep-rooted obsession to use Islam for political gains.

It may be mentioned here that, mr nizami and his Jamaate Islami has never
apologized to the people of Bangladeh  for it's murderous anti-people activities
in 1971 rather try to justify it's misdeeds in the name of "political difference" !
