BNP to keep distance from Jamaat for now
Rakib Hasnet Suman

BNP will not stand by its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami over several issues as the main opposition party does not want to take the liabilities of Jamaat's activities which they committed before the formation of BNP.

BNP will not stand by its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami over several issues as the main opposition party does not want to take the liabilities of Jamaat's activities which they committed before the formation of BNP.

Party insiders said Chairperson Khaleda Zia wants to maintain a visible distance with Jamaat over some specific issues, such as the trial of war criminals, although she is adamant to gradually wage a greater movement keeping all with her.

Party leaders, however, said they would protest all sorts of political "repression" by the ruling Awami League led grand alliance government.

According to the party standing committee decision, BNP would announce fresh anti-government programmes, like mass sit-in and hunger strike, Sunday. The fresh programme is likely to be observed in the capital and other cities of the country on July 19.

"We will observe protest programme on our own. We will not involve with all the Jamaat's issues," Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, member of the standing committee, yesterday told The Daily Star.

He said BNP would jointly observe only the programmes announced by the four-party alliance and Khaleda Zia would decide when the alliance should be reactive.

Party insiders said the leaders known as "hardliners" persuaded the top leadership to stand beside Jamaat after the arrests of Nizami, Mojahid and Sayedee. However, they did not get any response from the chairperson.

Some leaders said Khaleda Zia did not forget that Jamaat did not agree to issue a statement after her arrest in September 2007, during the military-backed caretaker government.

"Madam raised this point several times in party meetings and I think Jamaat's stance during that time hurt her very much," said a member of the BNP standing committee seeking anonymity.

Earlier, BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain said Jamaat would get their support but his party would not participate in Jamaat programmes.

Jamaat, however, participated in BNP's hartal and human chain programmes, although according to BNP leaders, presence of Jamaat leaders and workers in the programmes was very small.

Party insiders said a group of BNP leaders is trying to convince the party high command to consider the government's initiative to try the war criminals as a political issue but the chairperson wants to observe the situation before finalising the party's stance.

"It is a sensitive issue and I think the chairperson's stance is correct. Why would BNP take other's responsibilities on its shoulder?" said a vice chairperson of the party while talking to The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, the party will stage a demonstration today urging the government to produce ward councillor Chowdhury Alam before the court or the people. Alam is missing since June 25, two days before BNP's countrywide hartal.

Khandaker Delwar Hossain may announce fresh agitation programme from the protest rally.

[chottala.com] UN agency says Israel's apartheid wall is illegal

UN agency says apartheid wall is illegal
Fri, 09 Jul 2010 23:31:25 GMT

Arabs grazing their sheep on their side of the apartheid wall.
A United Nations agency says Israel's apartheid wall is illegal because it makes it difficult for Palestinians living in the West Bank to get proper healthcare.

A report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Friday has found that thousands of Palestinians have limited access to hospitals in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) because of the apartheid wall.

Ambulances are routinely delayed at checkpoints, and Palestinian vehicles are not allowed to pass through apartheid wall checkpoints, forcing sick or elderly patients to walk the long distance.

"Males aged between 15 and 30 often have their requests for permits turned down on the grounds of security," the OCHA report said. "In many cases, it is also difficult for parents of sick children or for family members to obtain permits to escort patients to Jerusalem."

The report notes that the apartheid wall has also hurt farmers in the West Bank.

Friday was the sixth anniversary of an International Court of Justice (ICC) ruling that declared the wall illegal. On July 9, 2004, the court called on Israel to stop further construction, dismantle the constructed wall, and compensate Palestinians affected by its construction.

However, Israel ignored the ruling and construction continues to this day. About 61 percent of the 707-kilometer wall has now been built, according to the United Nations.

The ICC ruling said the wall's construction was "tantamount to annexation" and impeded the Palestinian right to self-determination. The court unanimously rejected Israel's argument that it has no right to rule on the legality of the apartheid wall.

The Palestinians say the construction of the apartheid wall is just another land grab by Israel.

Iran halts woman's death by stoning

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani could still face death penalty, despite reprieve that follows international campaign led by her children

Iran's grim history of death by stoning

Page last updated at 16:18 GMT, Friday, 9 July 2010 17:18 UK

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani's fate remains unclear

Iran appears to have backed down over the stoning of a woman for adultery amid an international outcry, putting the whole issue of stoning as a punishment under the spotlight once again.

Iran has said Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43, will be spared being stoned to death for adultery while leaving it unclear what fate does await her.

The mother of two was arrested in 2005 and subsequently convicted of having an "illicit relationship" for which she was given 99 lashes witnessed by her son, then in his late teens.

Her case was then reopened and she was convicted of adultery during her marriage, for which she was given the sentence of death by stoning.

Iran's existing penal code provides for this form of execution for one crime - adultery, an offence "against divine law" - though murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking are also punishable by death.

    Stoned or spared

Human rights campaigners say Iran has one of the highest rates of executions in the world.

Death by stoning came into use in Iran after the 1979 revolution.

Iranian protest outside Iran's embassy in Ankara, Turkey, 9 July The case has sparked an international outcry

Amnesty International says that at least eight people were stoned to death in 1986.

The group says some people have linked this to the passing of a law that year which allowed the hiring of judges with minimal experience and that it led to an increase in the number of judges from a traditional religious background.

In 1995, Amnesty International received reports that as many as 10 people may have been stoned to death that year.

In 2002, the Iranian judiciary placed a moratorium on death by stoning.

But such sentences have continued to be reported. And Amnesty said this week that eight men and three women were awaiting the carrying out of sentences of stoning and since 2006 at least six people had been put to death in this manner.

It also said 15 people had been saved from stoning.

The brief statement from the Iranian embassy in London announcing that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani would not be executed by stoning said that "this kind of punishment has rarely been implemented" in Iran.

It also said stoning was not in a draft Islamic penal code currently under consideration in the Iranian parliament.

    'Medieval'

Iran has long argued that the death penalty is essential in maintaining public security.

It also says it is only carried out after exhaustive judicial proceedings, a claim that has been challenged by human rights groups.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party, requires those states that maintain the death penalty to restrict it to "the most serious crimes".

Critics of the way Iran has been using capital punishment say that it has acted in clear violation of the covenant.

From time to time there have been reports of stonings from other countries, such as Somalia and Afghanistan.

A case in Somalia in October 2008 attracted much attention. A girl was stoned to death before a large crowd at a football stadium.

The suggestion - particularly from her lawyer - that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani appeared to be on the verge of being stoned to death saw Iran accused internationally this week of allowing a "medieval" practice which has no place in the modern world.

It brought a response from the Iranian authorities indicating that they do not relish a confrontation on this issue, even if the next steps are not yet clear.

    [chottala.com] EATING FRUITS

                                   EATING FRUITS

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining â€" every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc â€" actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hairbaldingnervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene â€" the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this?? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.
