[chottala.com] Please review

Mr. Rashid, I read your article on Jai jai Din. One of your comment
made me wonder whether you really understand the meaning of democracy.
How did you find Zia, a democratic leader. He was brave, but
democratic? He was one of the most autocratic party leaders. Please
read the Jatiabadi Dal constitution and his brutal tyranny. How did he
hang col. Taher and so many freedom fighters? I want your reply. Thank
you.

[chottala.com] Chief adviser wrongly reads ground realities

We are extremely disappointed with the latest comment of the chief adviser to the military-driven interim government, Fakhruddin Ahmed, that he feels the common people are not facing any problems as a result of the continuation of the current state of emergency. It is absolutely unacceptable that a head of government could even suggest that the continuation of a state of emergency – and thereby the continuation of the automatic suspension of people's fundamental rights – does not cause problems for the 'common people.' Such a comment proves once again that this government, like all unelected and apolitical regimes, is neither aware of the realities on the ground nor has the necessary contact with the general masses.
We have tried to impress upon the government time and again that the suspension of the people's fundamental rights runs counter to its stated aims of positively transforming the nature of politics and strengthening democracy. Democracy requires the perpetual political participation of the people, within certain legal boundaries of course, for them to be able to demand and fight for their rights and aspirations. Suspending the people's right to think, speak and express freely or their right to assemble and protest is, therefore, extremely problematic, regardless of what the chief adviser might have us believe.
The continuation of a state of emergency is, however, conducive to the spread of fear in society, which we feel this government has managed to do rather successfully. Even though maintaining law and order and ensuring stability is the responsibility of any government, the current government, through the adoption of the draconian emergency power rules that have made usually bailable cases non-bailable, seems to have attempted to frighten the public into compliance. Such is the pervasive sense of fear that the government's unsolicited intervention in politics, its failure to rein in the prices of essential items or its inability to sort out the fertiliser crisis, for example, has gone largely un-protested by the people. It is also not surprising that the economy is suffering during this emergency period with investment levels dwindling and inflation going through the roof. We have pointed out countless times before that emergency discourages investment, as it indicates to potential investors locally and overseas that an abnormal and unstable situation is prevailing in the country. The lack of investment today can only mean that fewer jobs will be created in the future, which will affect the common people that the chief adviser has referred to.

While we can go on and on about the negative impacts of emergency on society – economic, political and cultural – we cannot find any good reason for persisting with such an arrangement any longer. If a state of emergency was indeed necessary in January to avoid a bloody confrontation between the two warring political alliances and to bring back political stability, it has been achieved long ago. It is high time that the government lifted emergency and returned to the people their democratic and political rights so that the country can move forward in its struggle to bring qualitative change in the nature of politics and to give democracy proper footing. If the military-driven government and its chief adviser really believe emergency rule does not cause problems for common people and cannot appreciate the need for the immediate lifting of the state of emergency, we, unfortunately, cannot but feel that our democracy is no longer safe in their hands.

[chottala.com] 2 Mr Abdul regarding Cambodia

Dear Abdul, its wonderful finding this posting abt
Cambodia. A few years ago while i lived in Singapore
i took a trip down to Cambodia. It broke my heart to
see what people went thru during Pol Pots regime more
like his reign of terror. In phenom Pehn there is
prison which used to be an elementary school but while
Khmer Rouge was in charge they have transformed that
into prison. So, now that has become a part of
history and also tourists attraction.

The class rooms are full of bad memories. In some
rooms there were steel beds with cuffs and shackles,
in some rooms, iron shackles are embed ed on the floor
itself. Some rooms have various torture devices
including the water tank, some rooms had pictures of
people being tortured. One particular picture
disturbed me so much i felt sick to my stomach. The
picture was of a woman, pregnant woman, two military
men holding the woman on the ground, one man cutting
her stomach open to get the fetus out and another man
beating the unborn fetus against a tree. Another
picture was just as horrific which was of a teenage
boy hanging upside down from the ceiling with bounded
hands and legs and his head is in one of those small
water tanks. Outside on the courtyard there are three
hanging bars, one was small, one was medium sized and
one was for adults. The small one was for children
aging 5 years to 12 years old, the medium one was for
teenagers to 20 year olds and the large one for
adults. Every room had the smell of blood, i was
scared to be in those rooms feeling that the evil
hasn't gone away yet if i stay here any longer i would
be forced to lie on the iron bed with the iron
shackles around my ankles.

Then we went to the Killing Fields. Seeing fragments
of human skulls and pieces of torn clothing still
embed ed in that open ground made me feel as if i had
been there before feeling helpless and hopeless, as if
all of the tortured souls still standing around and
looking for their loved ones and asking us living why
was this allowed to happen? There is a small museum
there, its a museum made of human skulls again
arranged from infants to adults.

Then we went to Angkor Wat, that was much more
pleasant than what i had seen days before. Its hard
for me to comprehend why we humans oppose such cruel
treatments on other human beings. We are simply
weired wrong. After that visit i was traumatized for
months thinking, my gosh, what if something like that
happens now, i wouldn't want to see people i know, i
love and care for to die this way. I wouldn't want to
die that way. I hope all responsible for such cruelty
are brought to justice, they deserve to be punished
for each life they had taken. Thank you once again
for such an article. Take care. Shoma

DHAKA: The businessman husband of a member of the interim cabinet in
Bangladesh and eight others were yesterday sued in a criminal case in
Dhaka for harassing a woman physically.
Farhana Islam, wife of Dr Mahbubul Islam, filed a criminal case with
the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, against businessman Nazim
Kamran Chowdhury, husband of Industry Adviser Geeteara Safiya
Choudhury and eight others accusing them of land grab and physical
harassment.
Farhana also attached a medical certificate as a "proof of physical harassment".
Farhana alleges that, Nazim Kamran illegally stayed in Farhana's
building in Gulshan in Dhaka, which houses his businesses, even after
the rental agreement expired.
Farhana also alleged that Kamran and his men beat her with iron rods
and tugged at her saree in a bid to "usurp the property".
Earlier, Dr Mahbub Islam and his wife, the landlords, held a press
conference in Dhaka on October 25, 2007 complaining about physical
assault by Nazim Kamran. Their tenants were three companies - Adcom,
Signage and Magnavision. Adcom is owned by Geeteara Safiya Choudhury,
an adviser to the caretaker government of Bangladesh.
The other two companies are owned by her husband, Nazim Kamran
Choudhury, a former member of the Bangladeshi parliament.
Dr Islam and his wife alleged that Nazim Kamran Choudhury and others
assaulted them on October 22, 2007 at their own building, 22 days
after the lease expired and after the three companies failed to vacate
the premises.
