Chevron loses $240mln claim

Dhaka, May 18 (bdnews24.com) - Chevron's US$240 million claim against the government has been unanimously rejected by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

The three-member ICSID tribunal in its award published on Tuesday unanimously dismissed the US oil giant's claim "on the merits" of the case.

The dispute related to whether, under the Production Sharing Contracts for the blocks covering the Bibiyana, Moulavibazar and Jalalabad gas fields, Petrobangla was entitled to receive 4 percent of Chevron's total share of natural gas.

Petrobangla argued that this was necessary to cover tariffs and losses incurred when Chevron used the Petrobangla pipeline to supply natural gas for the Bangladesh domestic market. It also contended that the provision for the four percent tariff was provided in the relevant sections of the contract dealing with the sale of gas.

Chevron argued that the four percent deductions, which had been made by Petrobangla since the commencement of production in 1999, was only applicable to the sale of the gas to third parties.

Chevron went to the ICSID for arbitration on Mar 17, 2006 against Bangladesh.

At the time of the hearing in May 2009, the company claimed $240 million as well as 4 percent of the total amount of natural gas produced in Bangladesh for the lifetime of the gas fields.

The government was represented by Bangladesh law firm Dr Kamal Hossain and Associates – with Dr Hossain, Dr Sharif Bhuiyan, and Moin Ghani deliberating in the arbitration – and by senior advocate Mahmudul Islam.

It was also represented by foreign lawyers Toby Landau QC (Essex Court Chambers), Jeremy P. Carver (solicitor), Samuel A. Stern (Hills Stern & Morley LLP), and Professor Laurence Boisson de Chazournes (University of Geneva).

Chevron were represented by King & Spalding, LLP.

1 lakh women workers to be sent abroad by 2011

BSS, Dhaka

Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Engineer Khondaker Mosharraf Hossain today said the government is planning to send one lakh women workers abroad within next one year after giving them necessary training. "We will open separate wings in our some foreign missions to look after the issues of women workers so they (workers) can get prompt help if necessary," he said while talking to the officers of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) here.

Outlining the growing demand for women workers in the Middle- Eastern countries, the minister said they (Middle-East) are looking back towards Bangladeshi workers for their (workers) utmost sincerity.

At the first stage, BMET would impart training to 1500 women selected by local government representatives across the county, he said adding that these trained women would be kept ready for sending as soon as the demand comes.

He said the workers would have to pay a nominal amount as training fee after being nominated for a particular job abroad. Besides, all necessary expenditure would be borne by the foreign recruiting agencies, Mosharraf said.

To materialize the target of sending more workers abroad, steps have to be taken to strengthen the BMET and the government has already taken some measures in this regard, the minister added.

"We are aware of different hazards for the women workers in the foreign countries and are talking with the authorities of the concerned countries to ensure congenial working atmosphere," he said.

He said every woman would be provided with a SIM card so that she can talk to her family members and keep contact with embassy officials when needed.

Director General of BMET Khorshed Alam Chowdhury and other officials were present on the occasion.

[chottala.com] Brain Damaging Habits

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2 . Overeating

It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our 20 body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6 . Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest.. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells..

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain

The main causes of liver damage are:

1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause.

2. Not urinating in the morning.

3 . Too much eating.

4. Skipping breakfast.

5. Consuming too much medication.

6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.

7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil.
As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.

8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver.
Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.

We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.'

The top five cancer-causing foods are:

1.. Hot Dogs

Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and Bacon

Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3.. Doughnuts

Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries

Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .

5. Chips, crackers, and cookies

All are usually made with white flour and sugar Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

PASS THIS TO ALL WHOM YOU LOVE & CARE FOR. ............ .. ...
