[chottala.com] Fire in Boshundhara city complex, act of sabotage?

Question arises about the fire in Bashundhara city, whether it is a deliberate act of  sabotage or mere accident. The time is main factor in investigation. It was Friday 1:30 to 2:00 pm. Due to weekly holiday  the offices were closed and if somebody even there went for prayer. So, the miscreants choose the right time for their deliberate act. If it is an accident then all safety fittings should work. Heat detector, smoke detector, fire alarm should work. But astonishingly nothing activated. There was also no water in the hydrants of those floors. Anybody deliberately de-activated all those to be investigated.

However whether it is an accident or sabotage proper reason to be find out to stop its re-occurance. When the investigator can not  find out anything they often say this is due to electric fault or short circuit. But if short circuit occurs then for safety reason fuse should blow or circuit breaker should trip to isolate the affected area. The structure was not also made of such combustible material ( wood etc. ) so that it easily can catch fire for normal short circuit.

All fire prevention appliances and fire fighting equipment were present in that building. But it's unfortunate that people there had little or no idea regarding the use of those. Regular monthly or weekly fire drills should be conducted  but that was not done. The people there should be well familiar with those equipment. If not then spending crores of taka for fixing those mordern equipment is useless. Fire lines and hydrants to be tested so that proper pressure is found in all hydrants in emergency. The fire fighters found no water pressure in the hydrants of burning floor. They had also no fire plan of that building available so that it can help the fire fighters to enter into that building and extinguish fire properly. Fire plan should be posted near all high rise building entrance detailing location of all fire hydrants, fire lifts, portable extinguishers, exit route, fire detectors etc. Fire Drills to be conducted and all equipments to be checked for its proper functioning at least once in a month. Test results and drills to be recorded. An indepemdent organisation to be formed to check those equipment and issue compliance certificate.

[chottala.com] BNP's Infighting: Court orders Irad's arrest

BNP's Infighting:
Court orders Irad's arrest
Sun, Mar 15th, 2009 1:13 pm BdST
Chowdhury Irad Ahmed Siddiky, Candidate for the Mayor of Dhaka, 2008
Dhaka, March 15 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court ordered the arrest of Chowdhury Irad Ahmed Siddiky after a senior BNP leader filed a defamation case against the 38 year-old on Sunday.

ASM Hannan Shah told bdnews24.com Sunday he had filed the case as Irad had brought false allegations against Khaleda Zia. The son of BNP standing committee member Chowdhury Tanbir Ahmed Siddiky also made offensive comments against Hannan that tarnished his image as well as the party's, he alleged.

Hannan, the BNP chairperson's adviser, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

His lawyer advocate Hossain Ali said the case had been filed under sections 500 and 501 of penal code.

Allegation and insults

Irad, in presence of father Tanbir, alleged at a press briefing last Monday that Khaleda asked for Tk 5 crore in return for a party ticket in the Dhaka mayoral election.

Irad called incumbent mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, and former mayors BNP's Mirza Abbas and AL's Mohammad Hanif "all corrupt", who "failed to deliver".

He called Hannan Shah the "'bastard' child of democracy".

He said none among Khoka, Abbas, Hannan and former FBCCI chief Abdul Awal Mintoo—the likely BNP candidates—was acceptable.

Tanbir, however, was not very quick to counter his son's allegations.

"What my son said was false," Tanbir told reporters the following day when the newspapers carried the story with screaming headlines.

He said Khaleda never sought money in return for the Dhaka mayoral ticket, as Irad claimed.

Tanbir dismissed his son's remarks as "false and unwanted", and said he was hurt by harsh comments on retired brigadier Hannan, "a personal friend of mine since boyhood".

The son's comments have nevertheless angered party adherents and the standing committee on Tuesday asked Tanbir to explain in 72 hours why he should not be punished over Irad's allegations.

Irad on Saturday sought to distance himself from his father and the BNP, saying he just voiced his own views and that he had no links to his father politically.
