Six professors suspended: Mark of a repressive and autocratic regime in Bangladesh

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

The true nature of the military-driven regime is showing its ugly face in Bangladesh .  In a democratic polity every person has rights to show or express his or her disdain, frustration, criticism against the government.  The interim government is playing hard ball these days.   I have a great deal of difficulty in understanding why Fakhruddin Ahmed administration is applying pressure to Rajshahi University authorities to suspend six professors for taking part in demonstration.   This is surely a mark of a repressive regime.

I urge everyone to voice his or her concern regarding the suspension of these professors.  Mind you, university is a open place where young people go to expand their mental faculty.   The professors should be liberal and open-minded so that they could teach students to be pragmatic and broad-minded.  The faculty members spoke their mind while protesting the presence of military personnel in the campus.   They showed solidarity with the fellow professors from Dhaka University .  However, the repressive temporary government took affront to faculty's protestation.  Therefore, in retaliation, the government pressurized the university authorities in Rajshahi to suspend them from their position.  This is a very sad situation.  The government is sending the message that if any faculty member expresses their disdain towards the government, they will be sacked.   This coercive tactic tantamount to scare tactic, which befits a closed society run by army junta or any such repressive regime.
