Re: [chottala.com] Chittagong University

The Holes in Professor Mannan's  PA Article on the Violence in Chittagong University

Professor Mannan's recent article in the Prothom Alo is well written for the common man but did anybody notice any holes in his article? Let's see: Prof Mannan says: The Vice Chancellor warned the Sibir leaders leading the procession not to proceed toward the Islamic Studies Department. If it is true, the question is why?
It looks more like (the AL appointed VC's) contact with the Chatro League informed him that the CL (not the Sibir) was ready to strike.

The first question is under the circumstances why the VC didn't call the police? Isn't it the Sibir''s right to lead a peaceful procession?

Professor Mannan's stereotypical view (not shared by many Bangladeshis) that Sibir doesn't even have the democratic right/ freedom to lead a procession. I believe, this comes from an understanding among AL supporters that Sibir has no right to do anything in Bangladesh because they believe in Islam/ Pakistan etc/ even hate India and by implication are not even Bangladeshis. To professor Mannan they are so bad that they are even linked with the Jamat. If that is the case I would like to know why the AL doesn't declare the members of Islamic parties to be the noncitizens of Bangladesh to deprive them of their rights.

Strange but true Professor Mannan instead of blaming the murderer blamed the people murdered. In his article, he didn't say a word about the killer. It is good to be respectful to minority members but sparing a killer, whether Muslim, Hindu, Awami League, Chatro League or people from any denomination is truly disappointing especially by a supposedly enlightened person.

I understand professor Mannan's state of mind. When I was in Bangladesh with Moni Singh-Mozaffer party, hanging around with my secular friends, I possessed similar mentality of hating anything about Islam and Muslims. I was a student in Bangladesh, professor Mannan was a Vice Chancellor of a university bearing huge responsibility. In the name of being progressive, isn't it fascism of some kind to deny one's fellow citizen's rights even to deny the Sibir,  bringing out a procession and get killed by live ammunition?

Like professor Mannan, I also had similar amnesia and loved India and my so-called secular friend's anti Muslim propaganda so much that, for lunch I used to eat only in Hindu restaurants. Now I choose the hotels that serve good food  and respect my Hindu friends but by now I also became the citizens of an independent country. I realized that we are not the Bhutanese. To me secularism (religious neutrality is good policy but anti-Islamism and denying rights of citizens is fascism). This is not progressive at all.

Mr. Mannan's hypothesis that only Sibir is linked with the Jamat but not the Chatro Leagur is wrong. The difference between Jamat and the AL is :If Jamat minded teachers get paid (I have no information about it), we know AL minded teachers get political appointments.

Professor Mannan thinks Chatro league is not liked with AL/ guided by Hasina, if that is the case, why the killer Poresh caught in the camera is still not caught by the police? It shows the revival of the old Mujibbadi cadre based bad trends in the law and order situation in Bangladesh.

Well, if AL murderers gets free at the president's amnesty, vandals become high court judges, what can people expect from Hasina's AL appointed Vice-Chancellors!.

About the Prof's strong belief of Sibir involvement in the Hathazari event without any source to backup his claims, we even see in his own writing that he had already made up his mind to blame the victims: the dead people killed by a minority member with a live ammunition and the rest in the professor's article is only a cover up "progressive-secular" AL math 2+1- made into 4, but for many of us when seeing/ reading an article with holes is not believing, it got to be that there is devil in the detail.

Assalamualaikum Sir.
Thank for your article on Chittagong University (CU). As an ex CU student, I know, as I have seen many times in my student life, what instigate a fight in CU and the last one wasn't exception either. Unfortunately, you concluded/assumed that the fight was initiated to halt the War Crime Tribunal.
Anyhow, I hope and pray that one fine day, you and some other respected teachers will take the stand or initiative to ban SO CALLED student politics in Bangladesh.
Vala thaikkun.
