Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday categorically said the trial of the war criminals is not being held out of political motivation, but on a popular public demand to deliver justice to the victims of war crimes.
The trial will conform to international standards and the government is committed to a fair and impartial trial, she told the US Ambassador-at-Large on war crimes Issues Stephen J Rapp when the latter called on her at her Sangsad Bhaban office in the evening.
Appreciating the US's stand against all grave atrocities, the prime minister sought US assistance in completing the war criminals' trial and ensuring the highest standards in the trial process.
Stephen J Rapp said he has talked to the ministers, prosecutors and all concerned engaged in the trial process and "things are moving on the right track."
Hasina said Bangladesh is happy to receive very open and clear guidelines and advice from the international community to make the trial transparent.
Prime minister's Deputy Press Secretary Bijan Lal Dev briefed reporters after the meeting.
Ambassador-at-Large M Ziauddin, prime minister's Principal Secretary Sheikh M Wahid Uz Zaman, Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena were present.
