Mymensingh, Aug 8 (bdnews24.com) – At least 20 teachers of Bangladesh Agricultural University have received injuries in an attack by the activists of pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League. "Twenty teachers were injured when they were attacked at the Teachers-Students Centre on the campus in the afternoon. Of them, the condition of Poultry Science Department associate professor Subash Chandra Das is critical," said teachers' association president Nazrul Islam on Monday. Nazrul demanded punishment to the attackers by 11am on Tuesday, failing which they would boycott classes and examinations. Proctor Abu Hadi Noor Ali told bdnews24.com that the association held an emergency meeting around 12:30pm to protest misbehaviour by some Chhatra League activists with him on Sunday, and then took out a silent rally. As it approached Jabbar Mor, he said several Chhatra League supporters hurled abuses at the teachers. Kotwali police chief Golam Sarwar said some of the teachers then picked Noor Alam, 'Habib', 'Rasel' and 'Tapu' to the proctor office and later handed over to police. It was after this incident that the teachers were attacked in TSC, and later the authorities sat for an emergency meeting. Those with severe injuries were admitted to the Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital. The proctor came under attack the previous night after he had handed over two students for allegedly indulging in mugging at the university's Botanical Garden. Noor Mohammad and 'Arif' were caught by security guards around 3pm on Sunday. Following this, activists of a faction of Chhatra League attacked Hadi's car at night and also hurled abuses at him from outside his residence at the teachers' quarters. On Monday afternoon, they also held a protest rally demanding release of the duo, and threatened to boycott classes and examinations if the two arrestees were not freed in 72 hours. Chhatra League's university unit president Shamsuddin Al Azad said the proctor did not respond when they tried to talk to him on Sunday night. "He [proctor] didn't receive phone too," he said. Azad claimed that 'general students' became angry when the teachers handed over some students to police after beating them. The Kotwali police chief said the four Chhatra League activists were released in the evening while the two others, accused of mugging, were sent to jail after producing them in the court. After attacking the teachers, the Chhatra League activists went on a rampage in some buildings and also set two motorcycles and two private cars on fire. bdnews24.com/corr/cs/kms/pks/nir/2250h
