Nuclear Fusion Research and Development Need for Simulation and Modeling
In The Energy Construct book by Ben Cipiti, PhD (Nuclear Engineering), which is a detailed survey and assessment of the latest renewable energy technologies (Solar, Geothermal, Wind, Biofuels, etc.), the chapter on Fusion Energy starts with "The joke I learned in my first year as a grad student doing fusion research is that fusion is always 30 years away." How right he was. That was true in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, ... That is true now 2009 - 30-year constant! As a mathematician, I always give a proof. So here it is. The huge project International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER with currently about 3,500 scientists working on it), after two decades of negotiations and $15B already spent by several countries including the U.S., the European Union, Russia, China, India, Japan and South Korea (but the U.S. finally decided to terminate its effort in 1997-98 after spending over $360M, the winding down effort alone is almost $2M), although finally being constructed still has its target in 2035 again the almost 30-year constant! The National Ignition Facility, or NIF, under construction at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in Livermore, California, started in 1997 (note the coincidence with the U.S. termination in ITER) according to Wikepidea: "Construction started in 1997 but was fraught with problems and ran into a series of delays that greatly slowed progress into the early 2000s. Progress since then has been much smoother, but compared to initial estimates, NIF is five years behind schedule and almost four times more expensive than budgeted. By August 2007, 96 of the lasers (out of a planned 192) had been completed and commissioned, with a further 48 (for a total of 144) nearing completion. As of June 2008, construction of the NIF is estimated to be completed in March 2009 and that ignition (more energy coming out than is put in) can be achieved by 2010. Its price of over $4 billion and its role in nuclear weapon research have made it a controversial project." Yours truly intentionally highlighted some very optimistic projections which in all probability will be much, much later (factor in the 30-year constant!) and much more expensive! So take note President Obama and Energy Secretary Steven Chu (my previous colleague at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey). But another constant from these largest undertakings to the others (1. General Fusion and 2. Tri Alpha, funded in part by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, etc.) is the sizable amount of money that is necessary even to build a prototype. That is why I just included in the High Level Architecture Characteristics of Citizens for Global Warming R and D, Inc. " .IV. Utilize the state-of-the-art in knowledge technologies, speech and pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, Virtual Reality, Simulation, Modeling .. " The rest of the details are in Click to join CitizensForGlobalWarmingRandD. This includes " 4. High level architecture to support virtual communities of strategists, scientists, simulation and modeling consultants, international lawyers, material experts, engineers and other professionals physically located around the world, but connected through the state of the art in computers and communications including an extremely wide bandwidth transmission in the order of terabits per second that will be needed in #3 " one of the subjects in our agenda for Citizens for Global Warming R and D, Inc., Initial Board of Directors Meeting on Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 3:30 P.M. at the Newark Gateway Hilton (across the Penn Station), Starbucks Cafe. You are cordially invited.
