[chottala.com] No confusion: Earned PhD versus honorary doctorate !

No confusion: Earned PhD versus honorary doctorate !

Mr. AR

FYI,Watson & Crick's famous 1953 Nature paper was not a PhD thesis.
Francis Crick's studied physics at University College in London and received a B.Sc. in 1937. He tried to pursue a Ph.D. but was prevented because of the-war in 1939. Then finally in 1954, he received his Ph.D. at Caius College in Cambridge and worked on a thesis called "X-ray diffraction: polypeptides and proteins."

James Watson's received a B.Sc. degree in Zoology. And it was at this time in his life that he an interest in genetics was sparked. He received a Fellowship for graduate study in Zoology at Indiana University in Bloomington where he obtained a Ph.D. in 1950. Watson's Ph.D. thesis, done under advisor Salvador Luria's able guidance, was "a study of the effect of hard X-rays on bacteriophage multiplication".

Watson & Crick submitted their paper on the structure of DNA to the journal Nature on April 2, 1953.  It was published in the April 25th issue—a remarkably rapid publication even for that time.

Watson and Crick's double-helical model of DNA suggested a mechanism for the replication of DNA.

James Watson & Francis Crick shared Nobel Prize in Physiology & Medicine with Maurice Wilkins in the year 1962.

In brief, hypothesis is a postulated explanation for a phemenon or provisional idea whose merit requires evaluation and thesis is the postion supported by evidence or data. A PhD thesis is a scholarly report, typically describing the development and testing of a hypothesis that demonstrates some initiative, originality, and creativity by the student. By awarding PhD degree the Universitie certifies that the candidate is capable of doing independent research and scholarly works in his/her field.

Let us not confuse between Academic PhD [earned] and honorary doctorate awarded by a university for contributions to the society, culture etc.  Of course, the awaed of honorary doctorates are deemed subjective by many...

There are also other kinds of Doctorate which are very much in vogue in USA.[ No thesis required]

These are : M.D. - Doctor of Medicine

J.D. - Juris Doctor/Doctor of jurisprudence [Most lawyer in USA have this]

                  D.O - Doctor of Osteophathy

                  O.D - Doctor of Optometry

DDS - Doctor of Dental Surgery

These are first professional degrees [Post-Bachelor ] and self explainatory.

I am not sure about the drift of these comments.Yes, cheap degrees are given out by some institutions. Others can buy them online. It does not appear to be illegal.

Most work for years before they can claim to have made their contribution to knowledge. Some luckuy ones are given honorary doctorates for their contributions to society, humanity or some bold or courageous actions. Many from Bangladesh got it, including Mohammad Yunus and Sheikh Hasina, from Belgium, possibly among other places.

We should learn to give recognition where it is due.

Re: [chottala.com] Hasina's Ph.D's were not earned

I found the following hilarous.:

Abbreviations and what they stand for:

BS= We all know that means

MS= Much of the Same

MD= Much Deeper

PhD= Piled  Higher and Deeper

The PhD of Musa bin Shamsher ( I have no idea who he is) does not belittle the thousands of genuine PhD holders. It is nice to have a PhD but it does not necessarily mean you are an expert. That title is earned through continous research.

Not all PhDs are similar; some discipline require rigourous training while others are less competitive. Even within the same discipline, the difficulty levels vary from one university to the next.

Dr. Jamir Chowdhury is right in saying that thesis depends on the quality not quantity (page numbers). My undergrad chemistry instructor (Phd Stanford) mentioned that there is a one page thesis in Stanford University. Similarly, Watson & Crick's famous 1953 Nature paper just has one page. But its impact will last for ages.

Typically Honorary PhD holders do not use the title.  Even many earned PhD holders do not use the title. My father earned his PhD from an Ivy League School but he did not use the title outside his professional capacity. However the usage is by no means unethical.

It is ludicrous that someone who is unable to spell his party's name in English, would use a Phd before his name.

 Dr. Jamir Chowdhury

You are right, in USA, a PhD degree requires 60 semister hours [or it's eqivalent in
quarter or other units] of graduate level course work in addition to passing the
qualifying exams, fulfilling the residency requirements and defending the doctoral
thesis. And of course, the quality counts much more than the quantity.

Recently, I read that Ferdous Quareshi has a PhD. Does anyone know
where did he get his PhD from, what was his major and what was his
thesis topic? The same questions apply to Col.Oli Ahmed.too !
Are these mail order PhD degrees?
Lately, it seems that there has been a trend to get mail-order PhD degrees
 in Bangladesh?

Thanks

Hello guys with respect to all, Based on my knowledge and information, SK. Hasina never used her doctoral in front of her name as it was done by Col.Oli Ahmed. She never said that she earned it. People are getting PhDs from UK and western countries without having any course work. They are given doctoral degrees within 2 years by even Cambridge. I have heard that in UK doctoral degrees are given as bribe to some Middle East people because they donated millions of Deham or Rials to those universities. Dr. Mohd was lucky to finish with 40 hours. I had to get 60. The size of the thesis depends on the quality not the quantity. My doctoral thesis had much less pages than my Masters thesis.

Hasina's Ph.D's were not earned. Knowing how to bluff people, she has been doing it. She had only a BA from Dhaka University. For this type of Ph.D's you need is to fill out a form and keep in touch with the committee that decides it.  She can't fool every Bangladeshi. For an earned Ph.D. from North America, you have to finish about 40 credits of courses, then have to appear for three comprehensive exams and then you will be asked to write your thesis. My thesis done on Maulana Bhasani was closee to 400 pages.
I found Hasina giving priority to personal honor before patriotism. When she came to Canada, she stayed in a five star hotel.  I met her in her hotel room. She is not a humble person but quarrelsome. As a researcher on the subject of ethics of leadership, I went to see her. She said to her followers in an angry mood "I have no more time for you. I have to go and pray" and shut the door loudly.Seeing her attitude,  I thought it was an excuse. I found her behavior as if the quarrelsome Ghosato begum in the Sherajudwala story. After the brutal killing of 10 people in front of the Baitul Mokarram by Hasina's followers she even said,  for one we will kill 10 people. That is not respecting the rule of law or being religious. God bless her!

FYI:

"Many Universities are offering Ph. D. degree
to me but I could not avail these because I have shortage of time" said by
ex-Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Bangakaonna Sheikh Hasina. During
her 5 years reign, she obtained nine Ph. D. degrees from various universities of the
world. In fact, by obtaining nine Ph. D. degree, she set up an world record.
It is believed that there is no such person in the world who could be able
to obtain nine Ph. D. degree in his life time. Sheikh Hasina, who is a
graduate of Dhaka University, didn't complete her Masters degree
but now she became the richest person in the world in context of having
Ph. D. Last two years, a team of the Government officials was assigned to
contact various universities of the world for finding
any scopes to obtain Ph. D. degree for Sheikh Hasina. Thanks to almighty,
they were able to manage following degrees for her:
1. Doctor of Science: Bangabandhu Sheikh
 Mujibar Rahman Agricultural
