Two wrongs do not make a right

http://shadakalo.blogspot.com/

Regular readers of this blog know that we have no sympathy for Khaleda Zia, a politician who have acted as enabler of corrupt politicians and relatives, suppressed democratic dissent, and condoned oppression of minorities. [For the record, we feel the same way about Sheikh Hasina, for the exact same reasons]

But what kind of democracy is the CTG promoting by making arbitrary decisions to favor the anti-Khaleda faction of BNP? BDNews24 is reporting that Hannan Shah, an adviser of Khaleda Zia and the de-facto spokesperson for the pro-Khaleda faction has been arrested. This comes on the heels of Mr. Shah demanding that the EC recognize the Khaleda-approved committee or face a legal challenge.

We would love to see the corrupt politicians pay the price--AFTER being convicted in a court of law. If the courts are going to be bypassed, why do we bother with the independence of the judiciary? For that matter, why do we have a judiciary if the executive branch can continue to act like that?

On the flip side, we have the infighting in BNP. E-Bangladesh posted a photo of ex-Army chief Lt. Gen. Mahbubur Rahman, a member of the anti-Khaleda BNP faction and a member of BNP's standing committee, getting slapped with a shoe. Daily Star is also reporting that he was hit by shoes, and has a photo of the fighting throngs while the police stood by and watched. Way to go BNP--defend your own faction by physically assaulting those who disagree with you.

The democracy we are being promised in 2008 will be based on these undemocratic practices. The CTG may believe that they are using a thorn to remove a thorn, but any democracy built on a shaky foundation that lacks moral authority will be more of the same: another Khaleda, another Hasina, another semi-coup in 2017.
