Shibir world's 3rd top armed group: StudyBreaking
Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, has ranked among the top ten most active non-state armed groups across the world in 2013, according to a recent study.
The study, conducted by IHS Inc and titled "IHS Jane's 2013 Global Terrorism & Insurgency Attack Index", ranked Shibir 3rd in the list, right after Barisan Revolusi Nasional of Thailand and Taliban.
al-Qaeda in Iraq came fifth in the ranking published by the US-based research group on its website on February 13.
"The epicentre of 2013 activity was in the Middle East, with significant pockets of violence radiating out to neighbouring regions in Africa and South Asia," said Matthew Henman, manager of IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre (JTIC), in a statement.
"In 2009, a worldwide total of 7,217 attacks were recorded from open sources. In 2013, that number increased by more than 150% to 18,524," he added.
The study also focused on militant strikes in Syria, Iraq, Arab Spring countries as well as in Sub-Saharan African nations.
