Disappearances continue, NHRC to tell UN rights body

Extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances and torture by law
enforcers continue unabated in Bangladesh, said a draft report,
compiled by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The report,
assessing the human rights situation in the country, will be submitted
before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). On Tuesday,
NHRC chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman presented the draft report at a
seminar on Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a mechanism established by
the UNHRC to improve human rights situation in each of the 193 UN
member-states.

Foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni attended the inaugural session of the
two-day national seminar as a guest of honour at the Pan Pacific
Sonargaon Hotel. Svend Olling, Danish Ambassador to Dhaka, Neal
Walker, UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh, and NHRC Member Kazi
Reazul Hoque also spoke at event, with the NHRC chairman in the chair.

Law minister barrister Shafique Ahmed was scheduled to be present as
another guest of honour. But he could not attend the seminar owing to
illness, said the public relations officer of the law ministry.

According to the report, Bangladesh has taken some important steps to
implement the recommendations made as part of the UPR process in 2009.
However, significant challenges lie ahead, it said."Child labour
continues to thrive, particularly in the informal sector. Indigenous
people continue to suffer for the loss of their land.
