534 killed in two months: Sharp rise in serious crimes

A total of 534 people were killed and over 4,000 injured in separate incidents across the country in the last two months, stoking up public concern over a spurt in serious crimes.Of the total, 243 people were killed in July while 291 in August, said sources taking stock of the situation.

Different human rights organisations also voiced concern over a rise in such violent crimes, saying that as many as 100 people have been murdered in their bedrooms in last eight months since January.

In most cases, the law enforcers had been unable to find the clues to such gruesome murders in bedrooms, but they arrested a good number of suspects. However, Home Minister Shahara Khatun and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandaker repeatedly claimed that there were no crime rises in the country. According to human rights organisation Odhikar, at least 95 people were killed at their residences during the period between January and August this year.

Another human rights body, Ain O Salish Kendra, in its report voiced concern over a rise in murders in bedrooms across the country.Police are yet to find the motives behind the murder of journalist-couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi. They were found dead at their Rajabazar residence on February 11 this year.

In the latest incident, Dr Narayan Chandra Dutta alias Nitai, 48, was stabbed to death by raiding assailants at his residence in Mohakhali area of the capital on August 23.Businessman Haji Fazlul Haque, 72, was slaughtered by unidentified assailants in his bedroom in posh Gulshan area on July 29.

Adilur Rahman Khan, Secretary of Odhikar, said the failure of criminal justice system was a reason behind such killings, which was creating lawlessness in society."We need to develop pro-people law-enforcement agencies to fight such crimes in society. Police should be more active against such incidents in an effort to establish the rule of law in society," he added.

Former Inspector-General of Police ASM Shahjahan, also an ex-adviser of caretaker government, cited various reasons for a rise in the incidence of bloodletting in bedrooms.Terming the country a "fertile ground" for murders he said, "No trial of earlier incidents and no punishment of killers as well as interference in investigation and weakness in prosecution are main causes of growing incidents of killings in bedrooms."He criticised the ministers and law enforcers for their indifference to such killings. However, he was doubtful about rise in the number of killing incidents in bedrooms.

When contacted, IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker said it is true that the incidents of killings are taking place, but law enforcers are also active to track down the killers."We have found motives behind the killing of Narayan Chandra Dutta Nitai as we have arrested five murder suspects," the IGP said.

In reply to a question, the police chief claimed that law enforcers were trying their best to unearth the motive behind the killing of the journalist couple, Sagar and Runi."The law enforcers will be able to capture the killers and produce them before journalists very soon," he added.
