Gunfight with Maoists: 6 Indian soldiers among 20 killed

Sixteen Maoists and six security personnel were killed in a gun battle in a dense forest of central Indian state of Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district on Thursday night, media reports said yesterday. The encounter, which took place in the jungles of Silger, was launched on Thursday night by Indian paramilitary personnel from three directions. Two Maoists have also been arrested after the encounter, they said.Silger is a "liberated" Maoist zone between the Naxal hotbed of Jagargunda and Basaguda in Dantewada.

This is the first time the central force has recovered these many bodies of Naxals. The arrested Maoists have been airlifted to Raipur, the state capital, Press Trust of India news agency said in a report from there.

The TV channels and other media said quoting official sources that six paramilitary men, including two commandos, have sustained bullet injuries and were airlifted for medical aid.Preliminary reports suggest that the casualty figures of the Maoists could increase as information from deep inside the jungles is trickling in slowly.

The encounter site is close to Chintalnar where Naxals had carried out the biggest ever attack on security forces killing 75 paramilitary men and one policeman in April 2010.
