Is Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina an asset of the Indian government? According to India Today, the Indian Army's Military Intelligence Directorate warned Ms. Hasina on late December that Islamists within the Bangladesh Army were planning a coup. In case the coup succeeded, India had a military contingency plan to evacuate the Prime Minister, her cabinet, and key Awami League figures. Indian helicopter gunships would launch from airbases in West Bengal and Tripura into Dhaka to provide operational air cover. Landing zones and evacuation sites were selected in and around Dhaka for the air corridor. As the coup never took place, the people of Bangladesh were spared from this spectacle.
What sort of special relationship does Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government have with India that the regional power would invest so much to rescue her? After Awami League's ascension to power in 2009, what has India received? The Titas River in Brahmanbaria has been blocked by a road buildup so that heavy Indian trucks can pass by, thanks to an experimental transit facility. Even though several environmentalists are concerned that India's construction of Tipaimukh Dam on Barak River will adversely impact lower Bangladesh, the Prime Minister's adviser Gowher Rizvi asserted that these notions are groundless. After video emerged of an alleged Bangladeshi cattle smuggler being stripped and beaten by India's Border Security Force, Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam remarked that these are everyday occurrences and will continue in the future. In return of this massive generosity by Awami League, what exactly are they receiving?
