Saudi Arabia Vows An "Iron Fist" Against Shia Protesters
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia delivers a speech to the Saudi Shura Council, or advisory assembly, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabi
Saudi Arabia government vows to take a hard line on dissent after a protest injured 11 members of the security forces during unrest in the eastern part of the country, according to Bloomberg.
The government news service placed blame on an unidentified country—which the Guardian newspaper suggests it may be Iran—for seeking instability in the country as a result of violence in the Shiite Muslim town of Awwamiya, where assailants threw Molotov cocktails and used machine guns. A man and a woman were injured as a result of the attacks.
The Guardian reported that the government said any further dissent will be dealt with an "iron fist" and to avoid an Arab spring from happening in the kingdom. Iran, on the other hand, has praised the movement against the government as a "popular uprising."
Eastern Saudi Arabia is home to a large Shia minority and has long clamored for equality and employment opportunities. However, the government has treated the complaints as a security problem and used force to suppress them.
King Abdullah has pledged to spend $36 billion on social and job-creation programs to mollify protesters.
Madawi al-Rasheed said to the Guardian that the government's plan to spend money has "failed to defuse widespread anger and frustration among Saudi young people especially: over crumbling urban infrastructure, unemployment, corruption and above all arbitrary detentions and abuse of human rights."
