Dhaka, Aug 14 (bdnews24.com)—The High Court has pardoned eleven pro-opposition lawyers after they offered unqualified apology to the judges.
They were produced before a bench comprising justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Gobinda Chandra Tagore around 4:20pm on Saturday.
The court had ordered the chiefs of prisons and the Dhaka city police to produce the lawyers before 4pm.
The order was issued when Supreme Court Bar Association president Khandker Mahbub Hossain presented the petition carrying apologies of 11 lawyers, including eight of 10 who surrendered to the court, around 2pm.
The lawyers who apologised include BNP MP Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia and Touhidul Islam, who are behind bars. Sharif Uddin Ahmed is the only lawyer among the eleven who has yet to surrender or be detained.
The chaos in the High Court between the pro-government and opposition-backed lawyers happened on Aug 2 during the hearing of a petition that questioned apparently seditious remarks on the country's constitution by Islami Oikya Jote faction leader Fazlul Haque Amini.
The next day, the court issued a rule barring 13 pro-BNP lawyers from entering the court and asked the Bangladesh Bar Council to explain why their licences should not be repealed.
Police filed a case against 14 pro-BNP lawyers with the Shahbagh Police Station while seven of them and two others were sued again on Aug 5 by the investigating officer of the case for an alleged bid on his life during the scuffle.
