Dhaka, June 29 (bdnews24.com) — Main opposition BNP has condemned the arrest of the top leaders of its main ally Jamaat-e-Islami. Secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain also demanded immediate release of the top Jamaat leaders — Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Delwar Hossain Sayedee — on Tuesday evening. Delwar claimed that the three leaders had been arrested in 'false' cases. "The government is once again bent on wiping the opposition entirely off in order to restore the BKSAL system," he said ,referring to the controversial one-party rule imposed by the first Awami League government in 1972. Stressing his unbending resolve regarding the immediate release of the fundamentalists, Delwar warned the government that it would not be able to escape the consequences of these 'misdeeds'. The statement from the top BNP leader said that the government was suppressing all kinds and forms of dissent. It also alleged that the government was exploiting its authority on the law enforcement agencies to legitimise their actions. The police arrested the three leaders from different places in Dhaka in the afternoon on charges of defying court orders. They were detained in a case filed for hurting religious sentiments after a Dhaka court earlier in the day ordered arrest of four party leaders. A large police contingent was cordoning off headquarters of the Jamaat and its associate organisations in Dhaka and Chittagong at 11pm on Tuesday. bdnews24.com/sm/ta/2300h ---------
The policymakers of the main opposition sat for the meeting at 8pm, presided over by party chief Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office. Khaleda's press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told bdnews24.com, "The party chief is discussing the present political situation with party leaders." The top BNP body held its last meeting on June 27 following the countrywide general shutdown. Secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, MP Moudud Ahmed, M Shamsul Islam, MK Anwar, Sarwari Rahman, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan and Rafiqul Islam Mia were present in the meeting among others. Giving some validity to speculations, one standing committee member said that the meeting was likely to focus on the arrest of three top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally of the BNP. Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and executive committee chairman Delwar Hossain Sayedee were arrested on Tuesday and taken into remand for 16 days in five cases on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a Jamaat delegation led by assistant secretary general Muhammad Kamaruzzaman and another led by Bangladesh Jatiya Party chairman Andalib Rahman Partha met the BNP chief separately on Wednesday night. -------- |
