Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata League president Abdul Kader Siddiqui on Tuesday said Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League was the party of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, not Bangladesh Awami League.
'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman killed off Awami League in 1975 to give birth to Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League,' said Kader Siddiqui told a discussion meeting.
Garbo Bangladesh, a social organisation, arranged the discussion meeting styled 'how we are doing and how we want to live' marking the launch of its front organisation, Laal Surja at the National Press Club.
'The Awami League which is now governing the country is not the party of Bagabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The seed which Bangabandhu planted was BKSAL,' he said while praising the present chairman of BKSAL, Amiruzzaman, for keeping the party alive.
About the rule of the present Awami League-led government, he said, 'It is now being said that Bangladesh would be digitalised. But they [the government] should keep in mind that electricity is the key to building a digital Bangladesh.'
'You cannot build a digital Bangladesh if the people experience load shedding 14 times a day. Before going for digitalising Bangladesh, you will have to meet the demand for gas and water.'
In an implicit warning to the government, Kader Siddiqui, said, 'People will not always remain friendly to you.'
As the audience was chanting Joy Bangla, the liberation war hero said, 'I say both Joy Bangla and Bangladesh Zindabad, as I am a Bengali by birth and at the same time I am a Bangladeshi as it is my country.'
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal general secretary Abdul Malek Ratan said though the countrymen had achieved the geographical map of Bangladesh in 1971, their true emancipation remained unattained.
'We never saw democracy functional in the last 39 years. The definition and character of democracy has been changed. Now democracy is about going to power by spending crores of taka in elections to plunder public wealth.'
He said it was important that we change the political culture, governing system and the leadership. Echoing him, Shahed Obayed, the convener of Garbo Bangladesh, said 95 per cent of the country's politicians did not do politics in the true sense of the term.
'They are simply busy making their chiefs happy in exchange for money. Political leadership is not something which can be inherited.'
The discussion meeting, presided over by Shaheda Obayed, was also addressed by former state minister Syed Didar Bakth, Jatiya Party's additional secretary general Sadek Siddiqi, former lawmaker Del-war Hossain and BKSAL chairman Sharif Md Amiruzzaman.
