ISDE Bangladesh celebrated International Fortnight for the Elimination of Violence against Women '09

Demanding Joint Efforts to mainstreaming Women in Education and Employment for stopping violence against women

If the equal participation of the women in education and job creation programme ensured, women can able to contribute to develop favorable environment towards women in family and social arena of the country. Present Government develops policy to ensure more women participation in education and employment progrmme. Poverty and ignorance are the main causes of VAW, so it need to create opportunities to more participation of women and this should be joint effort by GO and NGOs at the grassroots.  This was stayed in the meeting of act finding report sharing on VAW-2009 with Upazila Nari Nirjaton Protirod Committee-NNPC and Upazila WID Committee at Chakaria Upazila of Cox's Bazar district on the occasion of International Fortnight for the Elimination of Violence against Women '09 at Upazila Parishad Conference hall on last 7 December 2009. ISDE Bangladesh and Upazila Administration and Upazila GCA organized the meeting with the help of Chittagong Social Development Forum (CSDF) and Steps.

 

Mr. Zakir Hossain Upazila Nirbahi Officer Chakaria and President Upazila WID Committee was presided over the meeting and Mr. Rezaul Karim Chairman Upazila Parishad Chakaria was Chief Guest, Mr. Jahangir Alam, Upazila Vice Chairman, Jahanra Parveen Upazila Women Vice Chairperson was special guest and Mr. S M Nazer Hossain Executive Director, ISDE Bangladesh was main speaker and resource person. Amongsts other Upazila Women affairs officer Ms. Rabeya Chowdhury, Upazila Youth Affairs Officer Md Fazlul Hoque, UP Chairman ATM Zia Uddin Chowdhury Zia, Central leader of Workers party Hazi Bashirul Alam, Steps representative Sk Firoj Ahmed, Women leader Umme Kulshum Minu, Shahana Begume, NGO activist Gias Uddin, Sk. Azad Kamal tipu, Journalist Moinuudin Shahed were took part the discussion. Ms. Beaty das presented Keynote paper.

 

This was informed by key note paper there are 166 suit was submitted at 8 Police stations from January to October at Cox's Bazar district, amongst 52 are rape, 43 are dowry, 35 kidnap, 03 death, domestic are 33, besides 35 are young women torture, 15 girls child kidnap, 15 girl child rape, 2 child trafficking suit were submitted.      

 

Speakers say due to lack of consciousness and disorganized of the women folks and are not react any violation, VAW are not reducing. Most of them are ignored the VAW as internal and familial issues and common traditional culture in the society.  Speakers' condemns many literate women are passing idle time just take care of only family and husband, so there is need for strong leaders like Begume Rokya, Ila Mitra and Pritilata Waradader, who dedicate their life for liberty of women. They also thinks the national two women leaders are not the symbol of women empowerment, they are came here in the name of their husband and father, not their individual contribution. Speakers urge the women to self-reliant to stand their own and advice to develop own carrier and leadership quality. Speakers also urge the society to support the women for come forward to reach there.  Speakers also criticized that the present voter are more then 50% are women but they have no role to choice the representative or voting rights. So, all are requested to come forward to invest in women political empowerment for future generation.   

 

ISDE Bangladesh has organized a number of activities to celebrate VAW fortnight 09 with the help of CSDF/Steps at Chakaria Upazila under Cox's Bazar with a number of activities. These are press conference, discussion with Upazila NNPC, Upazila WID Committee, Union and ward level discussion with Union NNPC and WID committee, distribution of poster, banner, leaflets, stickers, festoon, street folk song, video film show, rally, cultural show discussion meeting etc
